Käpälämäki Finland Nestled on the border between Finland and Sweden sits Käpälämäki – a riverside retreat that translates to ‘A Nice Place to Return to’. Situated in a forest in Finnish Lapland, 20 kilometres North of the Arctic Circle, this property presents a unique opportunity to acquire a home with spectacular views of the Northern lights.

April, creating great conditions for skiing. There is a ski slope in the local town of Pello, which is 6km away, as well as on the Swedish side of the border. In the evening this is lit providing yet another extraordinary view from the house. One of the best things about this location is the sense of community. Each village has an elk-hunting club and just before Christmas they throw a party for the whole community who gather together and eat the meat hunted that year. At Christmas a local Father Christmas goes around every house and gives presents to children, highlighting the sense of family and community. If this isn’t enough festive cheer 100km away there is the famous Santa Claus Park, Rovaniemi. The main house is approximately 128 square metres in size and has two bedrooms with a further mezzanine room. There is one bathroom with another separate WC and a sauna, perfect for the cold Finnish winters. Like most Scandinavian homes, the house has an open plan kitchen, dining, and living area. As one side of the house is predominantly glass, these areas and the main bedroom have stunning views of the forest and river, allowing you to truly connect with nature. Outside is a Summer guesthouse and a decking area, perfect for Al Fresco dining. The home further benefits from 1.5 acres of land and with 50 metres of riverfront. Its redwood exterior and green roof further integrate the house into its stunning surroundings. Please contact Chartwell Estates for more details: 0207 409 0533 enquiries@chartwell-london.com

The 70 metre driveway is surrounded by beautiful pine forests, providing a real sense of magic in the winter when the branches are covered in snow, transforming this house into a scene from a Christmas card. Whether you are looking for a meditational retreat, somewhere to host summer parties with near-24-hour sunshine, or even a place to enjoy outdoor pursuits, this house provides a perfect getaway where you can feel at one with nature. Despite the tranquil setting, the location won’t allow you to get bored. If you are keen to get out & enjoy surrounding the area, this is definitely a place for you, with activities that you can enjoy

year round. In the summer, many of the locals go out mushroom and berry picking which is traditional in Scandinavian countries. The area is full of wonderful wildlife, perfect for following nature or hunting & fishing in season. In the Autumn when the foliage turns into vibrant colours giving New England a run for its money. Finnish Winters drop as low as -30 degrees centigrade, freezing the river solid. Not only does this create a short cut to Sweden, but also lets you enjoy ice fishing for winter salmon or for those with thick skins, swimming after a spell in Käpälämäki’s sauna. The Winters and snowfall usually extend from November to late

Bremont a very British Watch Bremont Watch Company launched its collection of highly developed aviation inspired timepieces in 2007 after 5 years in development. Bremont now offers a comprehensive collection of COSC certified automatic chronometers. Founded by two British brothers, Nick and Giles English, Bremont originated from the brothers’ joint lifetime love and passion for engineering and aviation.

The story of Bremont started in 1995 following a tragic plane crash that Nick had with his father, Euan English. Whilst training for an air-show in the UK their WWII Harvard aircraft was involved in a horrendous accident. Their father Euan died and Nick broke over 30 bones. This accident was a tipping-point in the brothers’ lives and provided the impetus to set up a watch atelier. The following year after the plane crash, Nick and Giles were back in the air, flying across France in a 60-year-old plane. Bad weather forced them to make an emergency landing in a pea field in the Champagne region. As fate would have it, the field was owned by an old farmer, who not only reminded the brothers of their own father, but was also a former WWII pilot and just as passionate about aircraft as Nick and Giles. His farm house, where the brothers stayed for a couple of nights, also housed a wonderful selection of restored wall clocks and he wore a particularly special wristwatch - the one given to him by his father. His name, Antoine Bremont, was chosen to grace this range of British watches with his passions in life mirroring closely those of the brothers and their late father. The brothers were determined to make a watch that would last more than a lifetime. To that end, it had to be made from the best available materials using the most tried and tested techniques. Indeed, this led to the company’s maxim: all Bremont timepieces would be tested above and beyond the demands placed upon conventional wristwatches - “Tested Beyond Endurance”. As a result, the stainless steel case of each Bremont is made to an exceptional hardness of 2000 Vickers which is seven times that of an average stainless steel watch case. The convex sapphire crystal is equally as hard and has nine layers of anti-reflective coating applied to both sides of the glass for increased legibility. During

the arduous 15 day chronometer movement certification process carried out by COSC, each Bremont watch must achieve accuracy to within - 4 and + 6 seconds per day. Bremont now finds itself in the top 20 of the world’s chronometer manufacturers.

Chartwell Journal

Seventh Edition

The high standard of finish and attention to detail seen in everything from the hand-cut and engraved winding rotor in the sapphire crystal case back to the meticulous machining of the three-part Trip-Tick® cases take considerable time and skill to apply. As a result, no more than 1,000 examples of each model are produced annually. An individual record of each watch is kept at the company headquarters for security and servicing purposes, and all Bremont watches are supplied in beautiful hand-crafted leather wallets or rolls, which have been designed with travelling and safe storage in mind.

well as encompassing the heritage of the brand. The boutique is more than a traditional watch store with an exclusive monthly explorers club, a considerable watch library and unique pieces on display such as the Ronnie Wood limited edition B-1 Marine clock.

Bremont is a British company that combines its manufacturing in Switzerland and the UK but contains something that no comparable timepiece can match: an air of quintessential Britishness. The brothers set out to create a classic English-styled watch that could be worn in the boardroom but had the strength to be used in the harshest of environments. Each and every Bremont model is not only designed to exacting specifications but is also sufficiently accurate and durable enough to be used for activities ranging from flying to polar and deepsea exploration. In addition to lab testing, each model has been tried and quantified ‘in the field’ by professional adventurers and explorers and is also the watch of choice for multiple military air squadrons around the world. In 2010, Bremont produced the B-1 Marine Clock which, along with its in-house movement became the first Bremont timepiece to be made entirely in England. In January 2013, Bremont opened their new watch making facility in the Oxfordshire town of Henley-on-Thames. The beautiful oak framed building in the heart of the Chiltern Valley has been custom built to provide an ideal facility for the manufacture of their high-end mechanical watches. Bremont is on a long term staged investment program to develop mechanical watch manufacturing expertise in the UK and will be assembling and finishing off key movement and case components in Henley. Bringing the shipping and quality control under one roof will allow the client services to grow and even offers customers the chance to come and see their watches being assembled for themselves. In July 2012 Bremont opened their flagship boutique in London’s Mayfair joining a host of high end brands such as Marc Jacobs and Purdey on the prestigious South Audley Street. The store spans across two floors and boasts a library equipped with leather armchairs and sofa, a meeting room as well as its very own bar for customers and visitors alike. It provides the perfect showcase for the Bremont collections as

Historically, Britain has had a considerable impact on watchmaking and was the pioneer of technical development throughout the last century. Bremont is proud to be at the forefront of the revival of British watchmaking. The appeal for the brand’s high quality and limited production timepieces is making Bremont a real force in the high-end luxury watch market. Limited numbers are manufactured each year and all Bremont watches adhere to the core values of precision, durability and individuality.

Elena Shchukina Russian artist and businesswoman Elena Shchukina sits down with Chartwell in her new Mayfair gallery to discuss her visionary plans, the highly anticipated gallery launch and how her career paths drastically changed.

Shchukina studied law in Moscow before making her transition into art – something she had always been passionate about. An art class Shchukina took in Milan sparked her imagination to create a new gallery concept – one away from the cold ‘white cube’ gallery format, and instead a vibrant space where you could imagine yourself living – filled with furniture and importantly colour. In 2009 Shchukina moved to London to pursue her career as an artist and enrolled at Sotheby’s art school, she there developed her skills and contacts that lead her to the opening of her gallery. Shchukina aims to introduce art buyers and collectors to a new experience when purchasing art and wants to stand apart from traditional galleries – which will no doubt inspire other galleries to follow suit.

What has been your inspiration behind your unique gallery, which is due to open in September? The inspiration to create a unique gallery came from my desire to bring several artistic forms that I loved together and from being an artist myself. In one space, I wanted to creatively showcase the two types of art that were significant to me: firstly paintings that I am passionate about and secondly, interior design that I had studied. Also, I wanted to combine my hobby – I make objects of art and bespoke furniture pieces – with my appreciation for art and my appreciation of exquisite workmanship to promote art and artists who I admire. For me, it was important to place furniture within a Fine Art setting, as I consider furniture pieces to be works of art. What type of artist will be showcasing in your gallery and will you be supporting young and emerging artists? I am really interested in presenting artists who are already established in other countries but remain relatively unknown here in the UK. It’s about bringing diverse talent to London and letting people see what the international art scene has to offer. Personally, I look to place works from artists who I admire onto a larger platform – it’s more about talent than prominence, although that too, is important. Will you be showcasing your own artwork in the gallery? As of yet, I’m not looking to place my works in the Gallery. You studied law at university, what made you decide to make the move into art and would you consider going back into law? Yes, I studied law because my parents advised me to do so – it was a great decision. Law is a very multilateral subject, which has provided me with valuable skills and knowledge that I find useful for establishing an art business as well. I made the move into art so that I could focus my passion and creativity into something that I could produce. Art has always been a hobby of mine I enjoyed visiting museums, galleries and various exhibitions and painting myself. While studying interior design, I started looking at paintings with my teacher and I still continue my lessons - I am fortunate that I could make my hobby into a business. As for law, art has always been a primary interest for me.

You have studied art all over the world, is educating yourself in the art world something that you will continue to pursue? Well, art has been an interest since before I started at Law school! At university, painting was one of my main extracurricular activities and I enjoyed visiting museums, galleries and various exhibitions. But it was during taking interior design course that I truly started studying painting techniques with teachers and I still continue my lessons now. If I get time in the future, I would ideally want to expand my art knowledge and education and maybe take some more lessons. Now that you have a gallery opening in London do you see yourself settling here in the UK with your family? Well, London has been my home for the past four years and the Gallery makes me feel even more connected to the City.

22

Is there a single person who has inspired you to open the gallery and fulfil your ambitions as an artist? I was very impressed with the atmosphere of an art village in the south of France called St. Paul de Vence. It has a lot of diverse galleries and artists. Mark Shagal spent his last years there. Travelling and viewing artists abroad made me want to share my admiration for their art with Londoners.

23

What are your plans for your career moving forward over the next 5-10 years? My plans for next coming years are to work on more exhibitions, participate in a wide range of art fairs in Europe and America and to expose my Galleries in more countries. With an exhibition in Monaco and with the Gallery launches in London this year, I feel that the next five to ten years will see Gallery Shchukina participate in a much larger international programme. 10 Lees Place, Mayfair, London W1K 6LL +44(0)20 7499 6019 www.galleryelenashchukina.com Chartwell Bespoke were delighted to assist Shchukina with her unique vision www.chartwell-london.com

The Worlds Most Expensive Perfume Clive Christian founded his highly regarded design house in 1978 - his vision was to establish his brand as the generic for Great British luxury. In 1999 Christian acquired the crown perfumery and set about designing the ‘Worlds most expensive perfume’, though with the focus not on achieving such status but creating something beautiful in design and sumptuous in scent.

24

Synonymous with luxury... Clive Christian, royal heritage and ‘The Worlds Most Expensive Perfume’ …

As custodian of a British perfumery, first established in 1872, and uniquely granted the image of Queen Victoria’s crown, Clive Christian revived the original values of the perfumery, creating only pure perfumes with complex formulae that use the most rare and precious ingredients in their most concentrated forms. Christian’s royal connections are still standing strong after he was commissioned to create scents for the Queens Golden Jubilee and the wedding of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Victoria. The Private Collection Perfumes are presented in the customary pressed glass bottle in a deep amber colour which pays tribute to the original apothecary bottles from the perfumery uniquely crowned by Queen Victoria in 1872 as a mark of British excellence. Just 10 limited edition bottles of No.1, the worlds most expensive perfume were produced; costing £115,000 a bottle, 7 of these went to private collections and the remaining three remain in archive of the company. www.clive.com

The five-star service Royal Mansour offers starts on the runway, upon landing in Marrakech you are greeted from your plane by a hotel representative and escorted into the VIP lounge for refreshments whilst staff take care of your security requirements - alleviating any post flight stress. From the moment you are chauffeured through the imposing gates at the hotel you enter a sanctuary of luxury and tranquility.

The intention of such an elaborate build was to showcase the finest in Moroccan heritage, craftsmanship and luxury. The build and construction took six years and in excess of 1400 tradespeople were on site each day in the final months of development, which is evident by the innate attention to detail. Each ceiling is perfectly detailed either by hand carvings or paintings, walls are embellished with mosaics, leathers and even gold leaf, whilst rooms are furnished with sumptuous upholsteries and hand crafted furniture. The hotel has an air of serenity - idyllic if you are seeking escape from a chaotic daily routine.

Royal Mansour boasts 53 individually-designed riads ranging from 1-4 bedrooms, no expense was spared on the project, initiated and funded by the Moroccan royal family.

32

It would be plausible to close your riad door upon checking in and never want or need to leave until check-out. Each exquisitely appointed riad is equipped with several living areas, dining spaces, a small kitchen and rooftop plunge pool. During winter months the riads are romantic havens - with log burning fires and deep marble bath tubs. Though only a couple of years old the mature gardens and authentic Moroccan hues that grace the communal areas makes the Royal Mansour feel like it has always been there. Modern amenities have been gently positioned within the hotel such as electrically operated roofs in the library - allowing you to gaze through the stunning antique telescope into the Moroccan skyline by night. Royal Mansour head chef Yannick Alleno, who has three Michelin stars to his name, created two gourmet menus ‘Grande Table Marocaine’ and ‘Grande Table Francaise’. Alleno stated that he wanted his restaurants to be the finest source of Moroccan gastronomy in the country, adding sophisticated dimensions and flavours to traditional Moroccan fayre.

33

Whilst his cuisine may be enjoyed in the beautifully appointed restaurants it is also possible to enjoy fine dining on the roof of your riad - enjoying the view of the atlas mountains by candlelight whilst being waited on hand and foot by your personal butler…. The grand Victorian building in which The Corinthia is situated was previously home to the prestigious Hotel Metropole, which opened in 1885, it was then taken over by the government in 1936 and used by the Ministry of Defence. The magnificent architecture of the building has been sympathetically restored and complements the fine fixtures and fittings that have been carefully chosen for Corinthia’s flagship hotel. World class designers, architects, craftsmen and designers were flown in to develop the hotels distinctive soul and capture the brands core values. Much of the artwork on display has been specially commissioned by the hotel: predominantly by British artists. Famed art consultant Minda Dowling assisted with the selection and instruction of the 250 unique works of commissioned art. Upon entering the hotel you are greeted by a striking ‘full moon’ chandelier - possibly one of the most intricate and largest chandeliers on display in London. The centrepiece was created by Parisian designer Chafik Gasmi and produced by prestigious French crystal manufacturer, Baccarat. To the left of the entrance is a Harrods boutique and luxury florist. The hotel has two superb restaurants - The Northall - which serves modern british cuisine from breakfast through to inner and

Citizenship by Investment: St Kitts Nevis The Business Class Option The recent global financial crisis, as well as the ‘Arab Spring’, has resulted in as significant a dispersal of financial and human capital as we’ve seen in many years. While the ramifications continue to impact us all, it has brought the topic of immigration back into sharp focus.

For many years now the UK, the US, Australia and Canada have been traditional immigration destinations, but the attractiveness appears to be wearing off – for applicant and country alike. The world’s global elite is now looking towards citizenship programmes that do not require residency, and when these programmes are offered by countries within the British Commonwealth, the advantages and rewards are compelling. Many countries offer citizenship with no tax obligations, and passports issued between 3 and 6 months from the date of application. While people all over the world will have a variety of reasons for wanting to acquire a second nationality, ‘Citizenship by Investment’ has captured the imagination, and risen to meet the requirements of many of the world’s most powerful and influential families. At the same time, it has become a status symbol in the same league as luxury yachts and private jets. For many, a tax-free environment is a key motivator. For others it’s the visa-free travel that this second passport provides; and for some it’s the opportunity to enhance professional, entrepreneurial and even academic endeavours. Applications for Citizenship by Investment programmes are flooding in from all four corners of the world, and St. Kitts and Nevis provides one of the best. The prospect of a stunning destination for work or leisure, and a passport that is accepted almost everywhere, is proving to be an attractive proposition and the final piece in the jigsaw for an elite group of people.

St. Kitts and Nevis offers the best known and longest running citizenship programme, dating back to 1984. The Commonwealth of Dominica has also run its own programme (which it put in place in 1991) and such is the demand and the advantages that these programmes provide – for country and applicant alike – that Grenada, as well as Antigua and Barbuda, are planning to launch their own programmes this year. The programme in St. Kitts and Nevis requires a ‘donation’ of US$250,000, but there are other, even more attractive options in the form of land, freehold real estate and even shares in a hotel investment vehicle. For US$400,000, not only does the applicant receive his or her passport immediately, but also a place to stay or rent out on one of the most beautiful and unspoilt islands in the Caribbean. While the existence of St. Kitts and Nevis’ citizenship programme through real estate investment has spawned a construction boom on the island, it remains relatively undeveloped. There is land available and there is a construction industry ready and willing to take advantage of the existing infrastructure. Furthermore, the land/property option enables individuals to not only receive immediate citizenship, but also to resell to the next applicant after a 5-year mandatory ownership period, at the same price as the initial outlay as well as any profit. During the ownership period, citizens are at liberty to rent out their properties – with rental incomes of up to 5%, and with some developers even guaranteeing the income – or even refinance, if they so choose. Even without this potential for returns, what can be perceived as a

44

guaranteed minimum buy-back after the 5 year period is a highly attractive proposition. It should be noted that with the real estate option, there are some government and associated fees that need to be met. Advice should be sought from a citizenship professional, but with the prospect of owning property and becoming a member of such an exclusive club of world citizens, it is estimated that they will be a small price to pay. The choice of real estate in St. Kitts and Nevis is considerable – from stunning beachfront villas, to spacious apartments overlooking a golf course, and even to shares in international 5 Star hotels. It’s important to note that investors who are not citizens play a significant role in the real estate arena, thereby ensuring a healthy ‘supply and demand’ balance in the market. St. Kitts, and its smaller, relatively untouched sister island Nevis, offer white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters and year-round tropical weather. The Royal St. Kitts Golf Club is ranked as the best in the Caribbean, and the Marriott and Four Seasons resorts on St. Kitts and Nevis are two of the most desirable holiday destinations on the planet. Everything is accessible from the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, just northeast of the capital Basseterre, with direct links to the UK, the US and Canada, while the Caribbean islands of St. Bart’s, St. Lucia and Barbados are a mere hop, skip and a jump away. If the prospect of acquiring property in a part of the world that many view as a dream destination is attractive, securing a prestigious

45

passport and second nationality with Inheritance, Wealth, Capital and Income Tax exemptions is quite simply irresistible. Travel to 138 countries worldwide, including the UK, the USA, Canada and Europe – for 6 months at a time without having to apply for a visa – with a globally accepted citizenship that doesn’t involve having to relocate individuals or their families. Perhaps this isn’t a Business Class immigration option after all. ‘First Class’ would be much more appropriate. Jeremy Savory is Partner in the Dubai Office of Citizenship Services Group LLC. De-Risking the Highlife Beautiful homes in the most desirable locations across the globe, exquisitely designed to showcase some of the world’s greatest artists and looking out across breathtaking views. Staff at hand to fulfil every need and private jets, super yachts and chauffeur driven cars to make travel from home to home a seamless luxury. It is the world of the super-rich, one of infinite possibility and privilege but there is another darker side. In an era that is without safe havens that world has also become tainted by fear. Fear that the glitter of wealth will attract thieves, bandits, kidnappers and fraudsters and that its barricades will be breached and broken.

48

49

With the fortifications and the insurance policies in place, the illusion of safety and security can mean that all too often it is forgotten that the clever tortoise with its incredible longevity does not just rely on its hard shell for protection. It also uses its camouflage to blend and disappear into the environment around it and its movements are understated and discreet detracting attention from its predators. It employs what is known as a holistic notion of security. At Assaye Risk, security solutions for all our clients are designed using this holistic notion of security and we believe that protection is about far more than just fortification, it is about assessment, understanding, adjustment, modification and training. To design and deliver a security solution for a private client, the first stage is to completely understand the pattern of their life, their family’s life, how they live it and the sacred areas of freedom beyond which they are not prepared to compromise. This pattern of life can take weeks to gather, with one of our highly trained specialists immersing themselves in every aspect of life for the client and his family.

When a tortoise feels threatened it retreats into its shell and hides and in the same way, the super-rich have responded to their fear by fortifying their barricades and turning their homes into castles to reduce the risk of attack. For their valued assets from the elegant townhouses in the world’s capital cities, to the super yachts on the high seas and the private jets parading our skies, state of the art security systems featuring high tech surveillance and voice, facial or fingerprint recognition software, impenetrable panic rooms and bullet proof glass have become prerequisite features, together with the private security guards required to police them. Fortified fences are used to hold back the outside world, in some of the more criminal environments cars are now armoured to prevent even the fiercest of attack and for the very fearful 24/7 bodyguards have become the norm. Insurance is also used to try and transfer some of the risk of attack. Policies are taken out not just to protect the value of jewellery, art, yachts and jets but to minimize the risk of damage to irreplaceable valuables. Insurance of a work of art can now include the emergency callout of rescue helicopters to airlift the asset to safety if it is threatened by natural disaster.

circle of staff, tradesmen and colleagues who have all been vetted, briefed and trained to work within the client’s homes and to put in place a system of procedures which must be adhered to before a new individual is admitted to the circle. It is equally important to identify areas in which the client and his family can adapt their life so that they lower their profile, both virtually in the digital and physically in the real world, reducing their visibility as a potential target. We will then put in place a system of red warning flags in all areas of life which should help alert the client, his family and those they employ of a possible security breach and provide them with a process to follow if a red flag has been raised.

Each home, asset, school or workplace is given a full security vulnerability assessment, taking into account the manner in which it is used and how often. Day to day routines of work, school, activities and socializing, shopping habits, online habits, staff employed in the homes and outside are all detailed and assessed. This pattern of life gathering can sound invasive but our consultants are all trained to employ the maximum discretion and fully understand the boundaries within a client’s home and family life. With the pattern of life complete, the next stage of the process is to analyse the findings, highlight the areas of significant risk and find the best way to minimize them. It is at this stage that it is most important to involve the client and his family in order to completely understand how they wish to live their life and the compromises for security they are not prepared to make. We modify and adapt our recommendations working with our clients to tailor the solutions to fit into their lives with as little impact as possible. Increasing the physical protection of assets will form part of the recommendations but there are many other areas which are just as important. People can often prove to be the weakest link in security and we recommend building a trusted

However, all processes, procedures and systems are only as good as the people who employ them and to this end we encourage practical training. This training will provide guidance on reducing profiles, on recognizing the red flag warning system and what to do when one has been raised and on the process to go through to admit new members to the circle of trust. Our training includes scenarios detailing places and situations that it can be best to try and avoid and for our client’s older children we provide more practical cultural awareness and hazardous environment training which gives them the tools they need to stay safe during their gap year travels and experiences. An innovative, boutique security advisory, Assaye Risk are experts at understanding the needs of their private clients and in designing and managing conceptual solutions based on the holistic notion of security. Chops and Changes in Mount Street Justin Preston, director of famed butchers ‘Allens of Mayfair’, situated on prestigious Mount Street, explains how Mount Street is changing faces and becoming the ultimate shopping destination for London’s elite.

51

Chartwell Journal

Seventh Edition

Mount Street is suddenly the epicentre of the universe for fashion, hedge funds and those of us that love oysters….and a great steak! Extending from the top corner of Berkeley Square to Park Lane, the eclectic mixture of exclusive shops, restaurants and high end residential flats and houses, built in Queen Anne style terracotta and red brick, give the street a feeling of quality wealth and sophistication. A very Mayfair Street indeed. Though it wasn’t always like that… The modern street takes its name from ‘Oliver’s Mount’ that was erected in what is now Grosvenor Square during the Civil War, to defend against a possible Cavalier attack on London. Hardly the luxurious designer haven it has now become known for! Allens of Mayfair has been a constant as many things changed along the Street, and is now the oldest Butchers in the UK having been situated in Mount Street since 1829. From the minute you walk through the big old wooden doors and see the same Octagonal block in the middle of the shop you feel transported to a bygone era, long before supermarkets and computerised checkouts, when trades people were a big part of the local community. With aged Royal warrants hanging on the walls, and evidence of working with the Savoy Hotel when the great Claude Escoffier was in residence back in the 1890’s there is a heritage that few big name brands can compete with. That illustrious history almost took a dramatic and final turn in May 2006 when the parent company of Allens of Mayfair at that time went into administration. With an expensive lease and a difficult business in need of investment it looked for a while like the days of a Butchers shop in Mount Street were coming to a close. However two buccaneering Butchers from South London, Justin Preston and David House, came galloping to the rescue. With a new found energy and some ‘Fresh Blood’ Allens once again has risen to being synonymous the finest meat, poultry and game. With Justin and David at the helm the shop has won awards such as ‘Best Butchers in England’ and ‘Meat Manager of the Year’, as well as developing an international customer base in keeping with the newer residents of Mayfair. The butchers shop in Mayfair has become almost a landmark in its own right. With hoards of tourists taking pictures of the farmed carcasses and freshly shot game, everyday, and the well-heeled and apron clad butchers standing to attention always ready with a smile and a recipe or cooking instruction for the fine meats displayed. You can often see the bikes

and clipboards synonymous with trainees ‘doing the knowledge’ parked outside making notes, as Allens is included in the list for budding taxi drivers to pass if they want to become qualified. But with a client list of celebrities, royalty and the great Chefs of today, Allens still seems at home surrounded by the modern day luxury stores the transformation of Mount Street has attracted in recent years. Being in the heart of Mayfair has its advantages, none more so than being on the doorstep of most of Londons 5 star hotels and highly acclaimed restaurants, many of which rely heavily on the quality and service Allens has been providing for nearly 200 years. It is no coincidence that after it recent refurbishment The Savoy Hotel chose to work closely with Allens of Mayfair to supply the finest meat products once again, just as they have for the past century.

52

53

It began with the hugely celebrated reopening of Scott’s, the restaurant once again world famous as a favourite haunt of celebrities, and the refurbishment at The Connaught hotel. But the real catalyst for change was the opening of a new store by fashion designer Marc Jacobs at 24-25 Mount Street, in what had previously been an antique shop, marking Mount Street as a destination for the fashion industry. In just a couple of years, Marc Jacobs has been joined by Balenciaga, Christian Louboutin, Jenny Packham, Lanvin, Goyard and Oscar de la Renta making Mount Street the new temple of high fashion for Londons fashionista’s! These new, and sometimes edgy, brands sit alongside some of Mayfair’s oldest names including Purdey the Gunmakers, Sautters Cigars, Alfred Dunhill and of course Allens of Mayfair in making Mount Street one of the most interesting shopping boulevards in the world. 117 Mount St London W1K 3LA 0844 880 2460 www.allensofmayfair.co.uk | @allensofmayfair Justin is an ambassador for Starlight childrens charity www.starlight.org.uk Images courtesy of The Mount Street Association

Boulestin St. James Suiting to its sophisticated French menu and classically charming interior Boulestin Mk II opens its doors in the exclusive neighbourhood of St James’s, London, this Autumn. Grasping inspiration from the cookbooks of the highly regarded french chef X.Marcel Boulestin - though certainly not a replica of his original concept.

X. Marcel Boulestin , Doctor of the Philosophy of the table, Culinary Ambassador to the English, intelligent gentleman of France, man of the world, essayist of vigor and charm... DONALD MOFFAT, THE NEW YORKER OCT. 29, 1932

Having fed London’s elite throughout the years; famous diners include Boulestin achieved global success as the ‘first TV chef’ and was the proud founder of Boulestin - Covent Garden - open 1927-1994. X.Marcel Boulestin never underwent any formal culinary training, yet in 1923 he was contracted to publish a cookery book entitled ‘French Cooking for English homes’ - which was a huge success due to its simplicity. The new Boulestin pays homage to many classic French recipes such as Jambon Percille and Oeuf en Gelle - which head chef Andrew Woodford hopes to make their signature dish. Boulestin is divided into two distinct areas for dining - the main restaurant and Cafe Marcel. Marcel is open for breakfast (7 days a week) and light, more informal lunches. The restaurant serves its full menu for lunch and dinner and during warmer months extends onto a quaint St James’s courtyard. Downstairs in the bijou restaurant is a sumptuous private dining room - serving up to 40 covers or hosting up to 70 guests for a drinks reception. Wood panelled walls and a roaring log fire make this the perfect gentleman’s dinner retreat. Whilst the lower ground floor may have a distinct resemblance to the traditional local gentlemen’s clubs upstairs is a light flooded haven - somewhere women would want to be romanced or share a bottle of

wine with girlfriends, yet a space also suited to a business lunch. Fresh apple and woodie hues against a stark white canvas are accompanied by bold artwork and an exude a chic ambience. Head Chef Andrew Woodford was handpicked by legendary restaurateur Joel Kissin, who partnered with Sir Terrance Conran on many previous restaurant ventures. Playboy: The Next Generation Cooper Hefner When Chartwell first met Cooper Hefner 18-months ago, where we conducted one of his first media interviews, a young Cooper was hesitant about how his role within his father’s empire would unravel. Aged just 22, Cooper is effectively being handed the reigns of one of America’s most iconic multi-million dollar brands Playboy Enterprises. At our first meeting there was uncertainty of where Cooper would slide into the brand and how his role would develop - needless to say it hasn’t taken this playboy long to learn the ropes.

56

57

Cooper has immersed himself within the Playboy brand and is aiming to drive the company forward and also very importantly breathe new life into the infamous Playboy magazine. His vision is artistic and his direction pays homage to vintage playful images introducing a gently refined image for the brand. A single Cooper hasn’t inherited Hugh’s penchant for keeping a harem of women, and insists he lives a normal existence in an apartment located 10 minutes from the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles for the majority of the time. Cooper spends his time shadowing his father as he edits the magazine as well as meeting with Playboy executives to gain a better understanding of the company’s businesses. Praising his father for being a great mentor Cooper adds that he only wants to “add to his Dads legacy”. His visibility in the media continues to grow as he serves as an ambassador to the Playboy brand, appearing at various Playboy and other red carpet events and sharing his life on TV entertainment news programs such as CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight and The Insider. Whilst at the moment Cooper is not on the board of the directors he insisted that he would like to become part of the board in the next 12 to 18 months.

You may be wondering what a tailor and a butcher have in common?! Both Patrick and I purchased ailing heritage-rich businesses in the heart of Mayfair circa 8 years ago. Like myself, Patrick has rejuvenated a tired brand with a dwindling client base. We have both realised the importance of embracing our businesses history, retaining existing clients, yet growing and developing our target market so we reach our next generation of customers. Patricks’ passion for clothing, craftsmanship and brands with heritage prompted him to purchase Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons in 2005 (founded in 1821). In 2009 Patrick re-launched the historic tailoring house of E.Tautz (founded in 1867) as a men’s ready-to-wear collection, now available from purveyors of luxury menswear throughout the world. Norton & Sons was stripped back

His ballsy decisions have equated in a thriving business - growing year on year above the rate of inflation (on Savile Row).

Surprisingly Patrick has no formal qualifications or training in the fashion industry and studied science and engineering at university. He likened the construction of a suit to that of a piece of engineering advising “it’s about making sure all of the pieces fit together to create perfection”. Patrick lived and worked in five countries - and in a number of different industries - before converting an obsession for fashion and being well dressed into the highly successful career he enjoys. He has also collaborated with and acted as consultant to many high profile brands, including Kim Jones, Christopher Kane and John Lobb and now luxury Scotch whisky Chivas Regal.

Patrick has been at the forefront of the Savile Row Association’s partnership with luxury whiskey firm Chivas, having designed a stylish limited edition case for their ‘Made for Gentlemen’ campaign. Our similarities do not end with a fashion and iconic Mayfair businesses; like myself Patrick also enjoys the occasional flirtation with TV, with him most recently sat on the judging panel BBC show The Great British Sewing Bee. Patrick has featured on best-dressed and bestgroomed lists and appears regularly in GQ’s 50 Best Dressed Men, Esquire Magazine’s Most Stylish Man in the World and was named one of ‘10 People You Should Meet in London’ in 10 Men Magazine. With an innate knowledge of and passion for menswear tailoring, craftsmanship and expressing individual style with flair, Patrick Grant is the quintessential modern gentleman. McLaren is known for its calibre of staff and knowledge, delivery and expertise. They possess extensive design and construction knowledge, and provide a service where they lead the process from inception to completion. The success of McLaren is a result of the collaborative working practice between their customers, consultants and project management teams that ensure they achieve high levels of quality in all their projects, and deliver against challenging deadlines. The company was founded by Kevin Taylor and Phil Pringle and has grown into one of the UK’s most successful construction businesses. Kevin brings 27 years of industry experience to his role as Chairman of McLaren. Aided by his quantity surveying background, Kevin achieved senior positions early in his career, including Managing Director of the construction division of a major UK PLC, together with a place on its main board at the age of just 32. Phil has over 30 years’ experience in the industry and his knowledge and expertise has been invaluable in working with Chairman Kevin Taylor to establish McLaren as a successful global organisation. As Managing Director, Phil believes that industry ‘best in class’ success is achieved through constant improvement and innovation – recognition that talent and integrity of staff are vital in addressing the complex needs of customers. It is his belief that combining this approach with a total commitment to excellence in client service has been the key to the company’s success in achieving high levels of repeat business. The London construction sector has boomed over the last few years with iconic buildings

such as the Shard, ‘Walkie Talkie’ and the ‘Cheesegrater’ taking pride of place amongst London’s city skyline. McLaren, on the other hand, have secured major high end projects across London, from the East End to Mayfair covering commercial developments, student accommodation, mixed-use, hotels and high end residential schemes. Managing Director, Phil Pringle states “The construction sector in London continues to grow positively and accordingly, McLaren have strategically positioned themselves to play a major part in the future growth of the capital

through workload generated from both existing and new repeat order customers.” Continuing on from the successful delivery of high end residential projects and boutique hotels such as 5 Portland Place and South Place Hotel, McLaren have secured two of the most prestigious developments in London, Bishops Bridge Road for Derwent London and 2-6 Southampton Row. However, it marks a further step for McLaren working on projects that involve conversions of historic buildings. The Bishops Bridge Road development, (formerly known as the Queens Cinema) is

The existing cinema building behind a retained 1932 façade, will be renovated and will depict the typical cinema architecture for the period. The redeveloped building has been designed with simple detail in brick and stucco with Art Deco style Egyptian detailing. Designed by architect, Stiff & Trevillion, on behalf of Derwent London, the development will include 16 luxury apartments, including a penthouse, all designed to a high specification with state of the art technology throughout. The new façade predominantly consists of terracotta rainscreen cladding with aluminium windows on the new elevations and steel framed windows in the existing façade. There is strong emphasis on the design and quality of the works with an extensive quality process being adhered to in order to meet the aspirations of the Client team. 2-6 Southampton Row is a Grade II* listed building that was the Baptist Church House Headquarters and Chapel, built in 1901-1903. Arthur Keen, architect for the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland, designed the building in an eclectic Edwardian Free Baroque style with Flemish inspired shaped gables and Arts & Crafts details. After suffering severe damage during WWII, the building was restored in 1946 by Architect RM Piggot, subsequently being awarded a Grade II* listing. It was registered on English Heritage’s “Buildings at Risk Register” in 2008 in order to attract redevelopment.

The existing facade brickwork and stonework will be restored with the additional 2 floors being clad in a mixture of brick slips and rainscreen cladding with a new glazed link bridge from the main building to the campanile. The internal works will mainly consist of restoring the existing panelling, balustrading, joinery, stonework and plasterwork to its original state throughout the building, as well as restoring the main stairwell. The project will take place over two phases; phase one - structural and building fabric construction and phase two – the hotel fit out. The sequence of works are split into various sections allowing McLaren to progress certain areas without affecting the main structural works and extensive temporary works solutions around the main new lift core. The internal fit-out will primarily commence from the first floor, working up through the building. This is dictated by the main structural works to the roof which will take place once the main steels are installed. Bentley for Her... Much to the delight of female Bentley enthusiasts, the luxury automotive manufacturer recently announced that it was launching its’ own handbag line.

The launch marks the realisation of a project, which is unique in the automotive industry, a reflection of the essential values for which Bentley is renowned worldwide: an exquisite design aesthetic, highly skilled craftsmanship, attention to detail and dynamic performance. The Bentley Handbag Collection transfers the functional luxury of our cars into an accessory that women can cherish. The collection gives the likes of Chanel and Mulberry a run for their money, the fixtures and fittings of the bag are of the finest quality – built to last. Dr Ariane Reinhart, Member of the Bentley Board for HR, has spearheaded this star lifestyle venture to introduce more women to the brand and attract new female customers who share a passion for exclusive, high quality goods. “More than luxury vehicles, Bentley’s models today are capturing more and more women’s hearts through their elegant lines and flawless materials,” she comments. “As increasing numbers of women around the world enjoy greater professional success and economic status, so have they developed a taste for refined, exclusive products.” The Collection features two distinct models – The Barnato and The Continental. The Barnato is named after Diana Barnato, socialite daughter of Woolf Barnato, one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’ and chairman of the company. She was an experienced Bentley driver and an accomplished aviatrix. Diana was the first British woman to break the sound barrier and always portrayed both daring and glamour in equal measure.

Just as the Bentley Boys are our historical racing heroes, and an iconic part of the brand, today there is an emerging culture of confident and successful women, ‘Bentley Girls’, with the same adventurous spirit. We are creating this luxurious and stylish handbag series to appeal exclusively to these modern women.

The Continental is named for one of Bentley’s famed model lines, used on successive generations of Grand Tourers since 1952 and the underpinning of the brand’s current success since the two-door Continental GT coupe was launched in 2003.

Bentley’s Head of Product Design, Daniele Ceccomori, has worked closely with renowned luxury leather bag designer and expert craftsman Vincent du Sartel to bring to life a wholly feminine interpretation of Bentley’s design concepts, highlighting the brand’s contemporary elements. “With the actual design of the handbags we wanted to create a strong link with some of the key features on our cars,” says Ceccomori. “Starting with the exterior profile and volume, we have drawn inspiration from the iconic shape present on the rear aspect of the boot lid of the car; the split side panels echo the wing-shaped buttresses of the interior dashboard and help to enhance dynamism and elegance, allowing to play with different material and colour finishes, a classic Bentley bespoke feature.” Inside, the handbags’ unique level of features and finishes are offered to evoke the same exact impression of when stepping inside a Bentley; they are exclusively lined all in fine leather with quilting features and functional compartments, including a waterproof pouch, elegantly blending core Bentley aesthetic values with everyday functionality and practicality, like a Bentley car. Extensive attention has been dedicated to the execution of the details; the metal furniture with the typical knurled signature finish enhances luxury and the sense of craftsmanship unique only to the world of jewellery, in true Bentley style.

Fresh char-grilled wild Spencer Gulf king prawns with shallot raita were then served, the meaty prawns were much appreciated after the light gnocchi course and were followed by a refreshingly zesty lime and mint sorbet. A slim sea bass fillet is paired with an onion chilli sambal spinach poriyal, another surprisingly perfect taste sensation. The main course of the tasting menu is a choice of either wild Cumbrian red deer with rock moss and onion sauce or a spice crushed fillet of Wagyu beef with stir -fried baby morels (at a supplement) - we taste both options (all in the name of research), both options are succulent and tender and the accompanying jus does not distract from the fine quality of the meat. The Perfect Gentleman’s mission is to make the world a more respectful, stylish and gentlemanly place….one man at a time. We achieve this in a number of ways, by training and educating through live events, short courses, audio courses, books and video. The first area we are going to cover is men’s grooming. A recent article in the Sunday Times revealed that the average British male spends over £1,700 per year on grooming products and while this may not be a surprise, what is amazing is male spending lags only slightly behind and is rapidly catching British woman. What is clear is that men are focussing much more on how they look and how they groom themselves. Grooming is important because it shows that you care about yourself and today it’s truer than ever that the first impression last. The way people first see you will govern the way they deal with you. Great grooming means looking in good physical shape with healthy skin and hair. This in turn gives you a boost when you look in the mirror improving self confidence so it’s a beneficial circle.

300 Days of Sunshine Per Annum Not so sure about that particular Monaco fact! Perhaps the correct meteorological definition would be ‘300 days sans precipitation’. There are many facts about Monaco and many good reasons to live there. But if living in Monaco is good enough for Simon Templar its certainly good enough for me!

76

77

friends and our friendship was galvanised by our shared passion for the South of France. Several years later when Chartwell took up residence in Monaco Andrew asked me if I would consider a move to Monaco to help him and Stephanie develop the business. After careful consideration and not really needing much persuasion I along with my wife and daughter decided to take the plunge. Our two sons were still at university in the UK. Andrew, the founder and CEO of the Chartwell Group and myself, now the managing director of Chartwell SARL in Monaco have remained friends and business partners to this day and we have seen the group expand and develop through what I can only describe as the worst recession I have experienced in 30 years. Chartwell SARL has a “Tous corp d’etat” license to carry out all types of construction & renovation works and high-end interiors fit-out.

David Rose MD Chartwell SARL For the uninitiated Simon Templar was a fictional character from a TV series in the sixties called “The saint” the character was played by my hero the one and only Sir Roger Moore KBE. Sir Roger then went on to play the role of Brett Rupert George Mark Anthony Andrew Sinclair. AKA Lord Brett Sinclair in the seventies series ‘The Persuaders’ alongside ‘Danny Wilde’ played by Hollywood legend Tony Curtis. I still watch today, the opening sequence, thanks to You-tube, where Lord Brett Sinclair is racing his Bahama yellow Aston Martin DBS (recently on show at the Concorsa d’eleganza at the Villa d’Este in Lake Como) against Danny Wilde in his red Ferrari Dino 246 GT from Nice airport to the front door of the infamous Hotel De Paris in Casino Square. Classic! Look it up. As everyone knows Sir Roger then went on to have some modest success with the character known as agent 007 James Bond! The point I’m trying to make is that from a very early impressionable age the French and Italian Riviera has held a certain magical attraction for me thanks to the above and it was always my dream to reside in this wonderful part of the world. Having now lived here some six years I can honestly say that I have never had any desire to return to the UK or any other part of globe for that matter. To appreciate Monaco you need to understand the region the culture the history and the people.

My family and I have been made very welcome indeed in Monaco and Monaco treats all its residents like family. This filters down from the Palace on the Rock and from HSH Prince Albert himself who portrays a sovereign who is a man of the people. Monaco is clean and green and proud and is one of the worlds leading players in looking for alternative sources of energy to help future generations. My move to Monaco was not planned and came about by chance. My accountant was telling me about a client of his who had decided to up sticks and move to the South of France, having a rather good command of the French language myself, he asked if I could assist his client in a meeting somewhere in the Côte d’Azur? This meant an all expenses paid trip to Monaco to attend a meeting for an hour to help with any language difficulties. I accepted the challenge and I met with my accountant’s client. The rest, is as they say, history. My accountant’s client was a chap by the name of Andrew Sheppard and he had taken on the unenviable and daunting task, together with his partner Stephanie, to venture into the world of continental business and start a construction/renovation company from scratch! Through blind determination and a passion to succeed against all odds they achieved their goals. From this initial meeting we became

The secret to our success has been our approach to each project which coupled with our pursuit of perfection and total client satisfaction we achieve results, don’t take my word for it speak to our clients. I believe that we still hold a certain Anglo-Saxon philosophy in our approach to our projects and this seems to be something that our clients have found to be a distinct advantage. Our clients are the most demanding I have experienced and some our projects have taken us to levels of expectation seldom seen in residential properties, unique, bespoke and originally individual. We have learned that the “only” boundaries are our imaginations and (perhaps physics). Living here does have its drawbacks its not always a bed of roses and some of the issues we come across could be same wherever you are in the world. But if I were given a choice of trying to resolve my issues while overlooking the Mediterranean or being sat in traffic on the M25 attempting to get into town, then I’ll take the med’ please. One more interesting fact about Monaco that I’ve learned recently is that it has the longest life expectancy in the world. That gives me an extra 9.5 years than if I was in the UK. I’ll take that thank-you very much. I suppose everyone believes that Monaco is just Grand Prix’s, Champagne, yachts, fast cars, sunshine, casino’s and Michelin starred restaurants. It’s not like that at all... Don’t you believe it!

Chartwell, A New Chapter The central ethos of every business, its very essence, is communicated through its brand. As part of our drive to align each of the elements of the Chartwell business under a unified brand, we invited branding experts, Village Design, to look at how we present the Chartwell brand. Here they explain, in their own words, how they went about doing this.

A product can be quickly outdated, but a successful brand is timeless. STEPHEN KING

Every company is unique and, to stand out clearly in a crowd, its brand needs to reflect its unique qualities. For us, a company’s brand is to be found at the heart of every type of communication it makes. From marketing materials, to serving customers, liaising with suppliers and even internal dialogue between staff. Brand touches everything. A strong brand image is an extremely powerful asset; it represents the product and services of modern business. Clear, recognisable and representative branding gives confidence to the brand owner and its clients – it’s a hugely powerful asset. This is why successful businesses work hard at building their brands and present them in a clear and consistent way. A company’s ethos can be communicated through the tone of voice, font, colour palette, logo and even the quality of materials used (such as paper stock). As designers, we

concentrated on all of these areas when tasked with developing Chartwell’s brand. Before putting pencil to paper, or mouse to Mac, we needed to understand the history and operating philosophy of Chartwell. We were fortunate to be given the opportunity to spend time with Chartwell – to get to know and understand the aspirations of the principals and company founders, Andrew and Stephanie Sheppard, and get under the skin of how their company operates. We learnt that Andrew and Stephanie created Monaco-based Chartwell in 2000. Their business has grown exponentially since its inception, built on an unwavering commitment to providing the very highest levels of quality for their clientele. Like most successful businesses, their focus is entirely client-driven and they take pride in delivering exceptional service with an unassuming can-do attitude.

78

In addition to building a company that focused so closely on their own ideals of service and quality, the Sheppards linked their business to their own heritage. Chartwell was the home of Sir Winston Churchill – a family with whom Andrew has strong personal and historic connections.

to create a colour palette that reflects the company’s unique character, while being engaging and helping clients feel in a receptive mood. We also introduced the colour palette to work as a device to help identify Chartwell’s sub-brands while still appearing part of the same family.

All of these central elements forming Chartwell’s core are a great asset to a branding agency. Chartwell has a clear direction, strong ethos and rich heritage. Our role was to ensure the brand reflected this accurately.

With a new brand in place, guidelines are needed to ensure the brand is always represented in the correct and most appropriate manner. We were fortunate that with Chartwell, this was easy to achieve as the company is true to its central ethos of understated excellence in all areas of its work. This was demonstrated to us when developing business cards with the new brand.

We began with the logo – Chartwell’s graphic signature or brand emblem. We wanted to show an association of the company’s link to the Churchill family. We found inspiration in the Churchill coat of arms, and by taking one of the four scallops developed an identifying emblem that stands proud as a statement and encompasses all that Chartwell stands for. The clean lines and simple shape of the new logo also suggests an image that is both contemporary and timeless.

Your brand had better be delivering something special, or it’s not going to get the business. WARREN BUFFET

Capturing this essence of a company that is modern yet steeped in heritage, contemporary with traditional ideals was also an important element when choosing Chartwell’s font. All fonts create a different mood with their particular styles and character. We chose one that reflects the elegance and sophistication of Chartwell, along with its modern, no fuss approach to its work. Colour forms an essential part of every brand and it is important to recognise its impact. It is often the first perception people have with a brand and, along with this perception, comes a host of emotional associations. When choosing colours to represent brands, we encourage our clients to think far beyond personal tastes and preferences. Colour can have a strong impact on mood. We worked closely with Chartwell

Just as Chartwell are constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in their fields of expertise; whether building the world’s most exquisite bespoke desk or finding a buyer for a multi-million property without going to the market, the company was keen to create the highest quality business cards possible. Our production demands challenged one of the foremost printers in the country and included cards that had to be bonded, printed in custom colours, debossed, foiled, soft-touch laminated, with sprayed edges. And, like many of Chartwell’s projects, it had never been done before. The result is exquisite and stands testimony to Chartwell’s dedication to quality and eye for detail. It is also the perfect summary of Chartwell’s business ethos; it is an example of Chartwell’s brand.

79

Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected. STEVE JOBS

The society limited membership exclusively to women and they were determined that this group would not be satisfied with anything other than the vote for women. For Pankhurst and those brave suffragettes it was “deeds, not words” that were important. We may have come a long way since the height of the suffragette movement and the gains made have been tremendous. But globally, and indeed even here in the UK, women are not always fulfilling their economic potential. Here in the UK women account for just one in four directors of firms. The majority of these women are sole traders or in traditional partner firms according to data from Companies House. In fact, of 546, 010 companies with two or more directors, women rarely occupied leadership roles. According to the Office for National Statistics more than two-thirds of 16 to 64 year old women (67%) are in work, compared with just over half – 53% – in 1971. And while the pay gap between men and women has narrowed to 10% for full-time workers, some traditionally lower-paid occupations remain overwhelmingly dominated by women. It is great to see more and more women are studying law, engineering and medicine, achieving higher grades than their male counterparts in many cases. Yes, they have property, voting, marriage and employment rights. We may not have the same fight on our hands as Pankhurst did, but these statistics are troubling. Is it a case of women not being able to have it all? Are we holding ourselves back? Structurally, times are changing, and businesses are increasingly realising the need

for gender balance in the boardroom. The groundbreaking review by Lord Davies in 2011 and the ensuing work to encourage greater female representation in the boardroom of the UK’s top companies is reaping dividends. Today 94 of the FTSE 100 companies count women on their boards as do over two thirds of all FTSE 350 companies. But more could be done to ensure that the talent, skills and potential of women at all levels of the workforce are utilised to their fullest. And what about us as individuals? Could we do more to ensure our seat at the top table? Thankfully women no longer have to dress like men in their shirts and suits to be taken seriously, but take a moment and look at the successful women around you. What makes them different? What have they used to get ahead of the pack? In many cases you will notice that they use their feminine traits. Rather than adopt masculine traits to try and get ahead leverage your god-given femininity. It’s about bringing your true self to work. Women are naturally empathetic and nurturing; don’t switch that off when you go into a meeting. It could be just the advantage you need – being able to put yourself into someone else’s shoes and collaborate for success. We are also good listeners. Rather than shouting loudest put those skills to use and by carefully listening to your boss, customers, employees, colleagues, and even competitors you can gain insights that can be used to improve the overall growth of your company. If you don’t have strong, successful women around you, look to the successes of women like Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. She is proudly feminine in her approach and encourages women to aspire to positions of leadership. At Shirley Palmer International we focus on getting individuals to realise their potential. Women who master their mindsets can realise

their goals, change the way they work and interact and become the best leaders in their field. And although I’m no Emmeline Pankhurst I too believe that there are many who have great difficulties to overcome but only because of their individual and personal mindset. If we truly believe we can, then we can. The only thing that is stopping you is you. Focus, take action and believe is something I preach and live day in and day out. So when are you going to focus, act and believe in YOURSELF! Shirley Palmer International is running a WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP event on the 9/10 November that will allow women to find the inspiration and support they need to move forward in their life and business. The American Millionaire Windsor is a culturally enriching private community situated in South-East Florida at the forefront of the New Urbanism design movement. The secluded village of exquisitely designed homes was founded by Canadian businessman W. Galen Weston and his wife, the former lieutenant governor of Ontario, the Honourable Hilary M. Weston.

84

416 acres of lush barrier island plays host to over 350 residential properties, comprising village style cottages and country estates. Situated on Florida’s Treasure Coast, Windsor’s natural and unspoiled setting provides a beautiful backdrop to the finest amenities, exemplary services and sporting activities. Exclusive Windsor Club membership is reserved for a maximum of 295 Equity Golf and 55 Equity non-golfing Members. Hilary Weston worked in partnership with renowned town planners and the architects Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk to create Windsor’s bold but relaxed aesthetic. Windsor is recognised as the blueprint for the New Urbanism design movement, promoting walkable neighbourhoods and public spaces designed by their universal accessibility combined with timeless architecture. The Windsor community is based around a central village with a further three neighbourhoods divided by wide tree-lined boulevards. The Anglo-Caribbean architecture of the low rise homes and public spaces complement the verdant tropical nature that surrounds the estates. The new urbanism/ neo-traditional design has attracted leading architects such as Hugh Newell Jacobsen, Jaquelin Robertson, Léon Krier, and Clemens

85

Bruns Schaub and designers Naomi Leff, Victoria Hagan, Tom Scheerer, John Stefanidis and Yabu Pushelberg to design public buildings and homes for the community. Whilst purchasers are able to draw up their own designs, Windsor also offers a collection of limited edition of existing home designs for the South Village neighbourhood and works with a number of approved contractors to build at Windsor. Choosing an existing home design reduces construction by nearly half. Designing a completely custom home remains a popular option on any available home site. Betsy Hanley, President of Windsor Real Estate comments: Windsor has weathered the real estate market decline better than most surrounding areas, and much better than the state and nation as a whole. The completion of all the amenities to a high standard, a vibrant lifestyle, cultural centre and an affluent and diverse population continue to be of significant appeal to new buyers. At just over 140 miles from Miami, Windsor’s Vero Beach location is highly accessible by plane. Melbourne, Orlando and Palm Beach are the nearest international airports and private planes can fly directly into Vero Beach Airport. Bentley Mulsanne Drive: London to Strasbourg The Lalique Factory Visit

86

87

Imagine if you could bottle the scent of a new car, albeit a luxury car, the aroma would be suffused with notes of new leather and wood and a general aroma of wallet girth. Well, Bentley have done just that. ‘Bentley for Men’ their new series of scents. They’ve joined forces with another exclusive and historical workshop, the master crystal maker Lalique who were tasked with the creation of a flacon to carry the scent. In order to appreciate the fragrance and all that has been sourced to encapsulate it, I had the pleasure of driving from Lalique’s London showroom on Conduit Street to Lalique’s factory in Wingen-sur-Moder, France in their grand tourer, the sumptuous Mulsanne. En route, I sampled speed and performance on the autoroutes and superb dexterity around some of France’s more rural roads. Of course one cannot survive on a skinny latte alone and being France, there is palate amusement to be had, particularly as we passed through Reims - restaurants to note, L’Assiette Champenoise, and Strasbourg, at Au Crocodile, every mouthful was a sublime experience.

Later arriving at the factory, I witness the beginning and end the creation, this exceptionally beautiful matt and polished ‘Lalique for Bentley Crystal Edition’ flacon with its ‘Flying B’ mascot was quite breathtaking. The Lalique heritage museum sits just down the road from the factory and offers a rare and stunning glimpse at some of the earliest pieces created by the celebrated jeweller and technician René Lalique, this is so worth a visit. Would it be a bit ‘de trop’ for Bentley and Lalique to create a room fragrance based on similar notes? Keeping this flacon in the bedroom seems a great pity.

Elit Limited Edition The highest rated white spirit in the world, elit™ by Stolichnaya®, reveals to the UK today its new limited edition vodka – elit™ pristine water series: The New Zealand Edition. This is the second offering in its ultra-luxury ‘elit pristine water series’, comprising only 300 bottles worldwide and just 30 for the United Kingdom exclusively at Harrods.

After travelling deep in to the heart of the Himalayas to source water for the first edition in this series, the master craftsmen at Stolichnaya® set their sights on the jewel of New Zealand – the Blue Spring – for the second. Revered for its exceptional clarity and exquisite blue hues, the water that flows from the Blue Spring is naturally filtered over hundreds of years through the pumice of the towering Mamaku Ranges. The formation of this natural treasure began 85 million years ago when New Zealand isolated herself geologically from earth’s other continents. Radiant and untouched, The Blue Spring is hailed as one of the purest water sources in the world. This rarefied water is then combined with the most exceptional single-batch Alpha Spirit at the historic Latvijas Balzams distillery in Latvia, producers and bottlers of Stolichnaya® vodkas for more than 65 years. This spirit is yielded from grains sourced alongside the all-natural Kershinskoye water reservoir. The earth there is so fertile and pristine that no fertilizer or pesticides are necessary to produce outstanding raw ingredients, and a distillate that is the benchmark defining the category.

88

London is an obvious choice for the global launch of the second in elit by Stolichnaya’s ultra-luxury Pristine Water Series – The New Zealand Edition. As the pre-eminent city in the world for high net worth customers, London is a hotspot for Über luxurious concepts to take flight. Marco Ferrari chief marketing officer Stoli Group

89

The blend, rich in character and flavour, is then filtered in the same utterly unique way as elit™ with a freeze-filtration process at -18˚C. Stolichnaya commissioned Royale de Champagne, the 135-year-old French crystal studio renowned for its commitment to exacting standards and organic beauty, to handcraft a one-of-a-kind bottle worthy of a vodka of this calibre. The crystal masterpiece is wrapped with a leather cuff emulating the New Zealand silver fern, galvanized in jewellery-grade Palladium. It is sealed with a weighty and visually striking Palladium closure. The case in which this handsome bottle is presented has been crafted by hand from ancient Kauri wood native to New Zealand. This rare wood, which has been perfectly preserved within New Zealand’s remote Northland, is the oldest workable wood in the world and at 45,000 years old is one of nature’s finest works of art. The wood’s natural brilliance has been complemented with a fern etching inspired by the unfurled “koru,” symbolising new life, growth, strength and peace. As part of the unveiling of the elit pristine water series: The New Zealand edition, elit by Stolichnaya has continued its partnership with Oceana, the largest international organisation working solely to protect the world’s oceans. Gaining access to the most impeccably fresh water sources requires a unique partner and to celebrate, elit by Stolichnaya will contribute towards the great projects that Oceana undertakes on behalf of the world’s oceans, coinciding with the release of the second limited-edition offering.

Enterprise Level Wi-Fi systems are not made up of common over-the-counter networking equipment, but designed and engineered to be deployed inside a business or enterprise. Access Points The best part about these Enterprise Level Wi-Fi systems is the ability to deploy access points throughout your home or office. This will allow you to walk anywhere with a laptop, PDA, or Control4 Portable Touch Screen and always stay connected to the network. The whole point of Wi-Fi is being able to work anywhere in the home or office, and that’s what we deliver! Guest Network Security Just like in a hotel, this network allows guests in your home or office to access the web through your Wi-Fi system, but allows them to surf the web only. Most importantly, it has its own password, which means you do not have to give anyone outside the family or business the password to your Wi-Fi network. Your personal files and computers will remain secure. 07712 453453 chris.d@chartwell-london.com chris.d@chartwell.mc www.chartwell-london.com www.chartwell.mc
