KATRA !

The city known for its religious values. The vibrant sindoori color and the natural landmark of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. With the population of 9000 and oating of more than 30000, the city never sleeps.

BUILDING USE PATTERN

A STRUCTURE OF STREET

CHALLENGES :

2

A

DENSITY OVERLAY

A

Lack of dialogue betwe Shared and Mobility zo

Smaller right of ways can work as shared zone used by both pedestrian and vehicles but no such provision is there. Slow , shared and mobility zones should be well deened.

B No room for all users

Street vendors encroach the footpath. The oating population being high in Katra, makes people sit on footpaths and cook food.

C Pedestrian Accessibility 3

WALKABILITY RADIUS

Pedestrians walk on roads, no slow zones or footpaths, unsafe streets, slow traďŹƒc gives user an ignorant attitude towards the city

D Low liveability for Slow zones

Elements such as tree lines and landscaping, and furniture enhan a street’s slow zone, creating spac relaxation, interaction, vending, a activities.

E

Sensitivity to Local Co

Street design should factor in loc activities, patterns of pedestrian m and nearby land uses.

The rst question that often emerges when one talks about accommodating pedestrians, cyclists, and street vendors is, “Will that not reduce traffic movement?” CONCEPTUAL VIEW OF JAMMU TO KATRA BUS STAND ROAD

KATRA !

RAILWAY STATION (THIS SIDE)

RAILWAY STATION - SHRINE ROAD

Major footfall generated through Railway route. Through development of this route, KATRA’S imagery wil impact masses in majority. This corridor will also guide the pilgrims from railway station to shrine road from where all facilities are available to pilgrims. Masses will not feel directionless. From start to end to start, the pilgrims will easily sta complete their journey without having the mindset of dirty city street .

Furnitures, trees, chai shop add to the liveability of KATRA , providing leisure as well as an experience.

LIVEABILITY

LANDMARK

Slow zones have vendor hotspots where people can relax, buy, chitchat and also shoot their queries at the information desk CREATIVE USE OF SPACE

The shared, slow and mobile zones are segragated as well as connected at the same time. FOR ALL USERS

SENSITIVITY TO LOCAL CONTEXT The series of events happenig around the street are changing giving a god image of the city and keeping them from getting lost . small points act as memory nodes.

Use of Tensile for shad median will help pilgr use the stret in all wea and act as permanen for vendors. TEMPORARY PERM

Landmarks play an important role for pilgrim cities. The Shrine itself stands for mighty abode and mountains symbolize stability . SYMBOLISM

GAIT : A PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PROJECT : LOCATION : DATE:

01

Annual Nasa Design Competition’15 Dehradun, Uttarakhand , India. June, 2015

ROLE:

Design and Architectural Visualisation

{Re}evolution PROJECT BRIEF: Evolution is for more thrilling than biblical account. Who wouldn.t be a rising ape than falling angle? The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal - Aristotle The best and the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched- they must be felt with the heart - Hellen Keller The Design is expected to rotate through innumerable researches, prior attaining the absolute form. Experimenting with light and shadows and impede to exploit maximum use of upright silhouette. OBJECTIVE: “Provide small scale encounters in large scale friend.” “Create a Re-Evolution to place everyone on the same grounds and thus fostering the cause of equality in every aspect.” Evolutionary psychology focuses primarily on the “Why?” questions, while traditional psychology focuses on the “How” questions. The design should be something unusual that not a district individual has thought prior to and its impact should not fade with time.

WHY GAIT?

TEMPORARY RECREATION

ECOLOGY PRESERVATION

Swings, Mela, famous masala dosa stalls, art works, idol making space, mehendi artists.

Being an overpass, minimum land use. Creation of green belt above ground Innovative water purifying profile.

HARDSCAPE

COMMUNITY COHESION

Running track , pathways for circulation across the ground.

Tibetans x Blacksmiths Trans x Male x Female Abled x Differently abled Young x Old Weak x Bold

GREEN SCAPE All the green spaces are covered mostly with weeds, grass and small flowers.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT Open air theatre View of mussourie hills Running track beneath

TEMPORARY SETTLEMENTS The Lohar community is the majorly migrating one in the Dehradun region. They create their temporary shelter along roadsides/ beside nallas.

PEDESTRIAN PROMOTION

MAJORITY OF AREA COVERED BY EUCALYPTUS TREES

Curiosity through walkway Active zoning Yoga and Swachch Bharat abhiyaan activities.

Eucalyptus is a really tall dense tree, it provides shade to the sunday market shop keepers to set up their stall in summers with ease.

1929

Used for political rallies, circuses etc.

1939

Used for football matches between British and Gorkhas.

1990

OPEN AIR THEATRE: Community cohesion: Questions and persuasion of TransGender group and their representatives will share their views on different subjects , the sharing of people’s perspectives in the changing society. Training programmes for Tibetan refugees in India. Vocational training for different groups. Design: Universal design

The sculpture acts as a divider or diversion to different zones of GAIT. The sculpture has a concept of both positive and negative space. The shape is twisted to show grace but the sharp pointing edges are rough at the end. Things go hand in hand, good-bad, smooth- rough , forward-backward. Perception is another part of sculpture. As people will walk by the sculpture, there will be curiosity or differences in perspectives/opinions which can be shared. To strike into people’s minds and make an impression is this sculpture’s duty. The sculpture could be briefed in various yoga sessions, meditation meetings taking place in the mud park or o.a.t

DIVIDER SCULPTURE

Use of ramps for accessibility for all age groups and the use of the place for all types of issues and basically “everyone, everything and anyone, anything.

ELEVATED MUD PARK Coonectivity to earth. When anyone stands barefoot, there can be any of the three cases: Doesnt have enough to afford slippers, Is entering a religious site or wants to feel mud/ grass and go back into a memory lane.

This side of GAIT overlooks the parking area and also acts as the waiting area for friend groups, acquaintances etc.

All the three cases prove the difference in resources and obviously experiences. We all grow from the same mud, enculcate different cultures, but nobody should be denied of their rights to put their feet on any ground. All age groups can easily sit/chat/absorb here.

TENSILE MEMBRANE STRUCTURE Shelter of environment (sun, rain, wind). Translucency in general, possibilities to design light effects. Can be used as medium of communication. Light weight & Durability. Endless form possibilities, catching character. Large spans. Short building time, off site manufacturing of structure and less site interruption time. Simplicity of maintenance & Easy repair or replacement. Adaptability to exciting building technologies (steel, glass, cement, stone) Eco friendliness. Recyclability.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES FOR FURNITURE Universal Design strives to improve the original design concept by making it more inclusive.Universal Design benefits more people than older people and people with disabilities. Equitable use Flexibility in use Simple and intuitive use Perceptible information Tolerance for error Low physical effort Size and space for approach and use

TOILET BLOCK Has provision fo abled/ differently abled / trans community/ male/ female. The presence of signage of these five itself will give a sense of recognition of a community in the society and the ignorance will fade away.
