Top 3 Colleges

Top 3By: Colleges Suzie

Benitez

College is something most students are looking forward to after high school. Whether it is for the wild parties or to actually further their education, most students anticipate with pleasure the independence they get when they get to leave the nest to be on their own for the first time. Grandview High School’s definite top pick for college is Washington State University. This is one of the more conveniently located schools since it is close to the lower valley, meaning it is easy to come visit the folks or friends on a weekend. Washington University was ranked number 128 in the nation; it has an amazing veterinary program and is also quite known for the social gatherings it has a tendency to house among the alumni. The second pick by Grandview High School was the University of Washington. Located in Seattle, with joint schools in Bothell and Tacoma, it is ranked number 52 in the nation.

8

UW is best known for its wide ranging diversity, sports, and academic programs, such as its School of Business and research facilities, which are among some of the best in the world. The only problem with this school is the acceptance rate, which is fifty nine percent, compared to the Cougars’ seventy two percent, making it one of the more competitive schools in Washington. The third pick nearly tied with the University of Washington with a loss of some ten votes. Central Washington University is ranked number 51 in the west region of the United States. CWU has the highest acceptance rate of the three picks, with an 80 percent acceptance in this year alone. If there is anything these schools have in common, it is that they are all in-state universities. This shows that even though students want to leave home, they do not want to go far.

National Honor Society By: Amanda

Oliver

On Monday, April 21, 2014 at 6:00 PM in the Grandview High School Library, a prestigious event took place: the induction of new members to Grandview’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Students in the National Honor Society are held to the upmost ideals of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The quote, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” by Noblesse Oblige, is the NHS motto. Before the new members were introduced and inducted, the four portions of the NHS were explained by this past year’s officers. Brendan Bardwell served as President, and he led the ceremony. Tristan Poteet was Vice President, and he explained the scholarship part. Analilia Granados was Treasurer, and she described character. She also served as translator for the evening. Miranda Ebbelaar was secretary, and she defined service. Lorenz Silva, the only junior officer, served as historian, and explained leadership. “Being an officer required me to help plan the ceremony and come up with a service project for the group during the year, which we decided would be creating hearts filled with candy and sending them to retirement homes for Valentine’s Day. It was a nice gesture, but I wish we could have done more,” Granados explained. Following the description of each component, twenty sophomores and two juniors were inducted into the NHS for the upcoming year. The names are listed on the next page. “I thought the induction ceremony went really well. In the future it would be cool if the introductions were all poems. This year was challenging because we had so many new inductees and not enough existing members,” Granados continued. During the ceremony, seniors who were members of the NHS this past year received their cords. The list of seniors are listed below.

Senior Advice to Freshman By: Lesly Santamaria

As the school year comes to an end, so do the seniors of 2014. The seniors have gone through four years of lessons and mistakes that have made them into the adult they are now. As they say their goodbyes and farewells, they share some advice they havecarried with them over the years. Sharris Ramirez: “Focus on school, don’t procrastinate, start your portfolio early, and if anything, avoid drama. Also join as many clubs and as many sports as you can, get involved and do not argue with the teacher because you are never right.” Jasmine Sandoval: “Do not wait until the last minute to turn stuff in and be as involved in school as you can! Make high school memorable.” Adriana Rivera: “Get started early on all senior requirements; it’ll save you a lot of trouble in the end.” Adam Perez: “Scan all your requirements once you get them.” Lesly Santamaria: “Get as involved in school and the community as you can. Don’t be afraid to meet new people, try new things, turn stuff in when it is due, and never lose yourself.” Joesiah Saunders: “Luck is for people who leave their happiness to chance. Enjoy your four years; they’re short and full of opportunities.” Jessica Benavides: “Get stuff done on time, but have fun because high school goes by in the blink of an eye.” Alexis Gonzales: “Participate in as much as you can and do not procrastinate or wait until the last minute to do things!” Overall, all high school seniors have accumulated much knowledge and have learned many lessons here at GHS, enough to pass down and inspire the underclassmen. Senior Rights By: Suzie Benitez

Have you ever noticed how senior citizens get certain rights over younger people? For example they get discounts when they go to the movies and restaurants. Most people would say that they earned thses special priveleges because they have survived life this far. Now a days anyone deemed a “senior” seems to think that they have more rights over others. One such class of people are the seniors in high school. “Seniors don’t have rights. They may think they do, but they can’t do whatever they want until they have a diploma in their hand with a certificate of graduation in it,” said English Teacher Stacy Stearns, with some vehemence in her eyes. So technically when seniors come waltzing late into class or shorcut somone in the lunch line, they do not really have the “right” to even say senior rights when they commit such a horrible action.

College Sport Athletes By: Suzie Benitez

From being on the sidelines cheering their older siblings on as they watch them play or participating in a sport since the moment they could walk, these young ladies and gentleman share a passion that cannot be matched when it comes to them and their sports. Marissa Caballero first began to play basketball when she was just two years old and her parents introduced her to the sport. Taylor Hall’s favorite pastime when she was younger used to be going to watch her sister play volleyball, so “the first chance I got, I joined and I have been involved for seven years.” Jamila Shafer tried track and field because she wanted to try a different spring sport her sophomore year and according to her “It was the best decision I ever made. I fell in love with the sport.” Isaiah Gonzales, a varsity boys basketball star got his start at a young age as well. “Playing basketball has always been a part of my life, and I could not imagine life wothout it.” Usually participating in a college sport is first priority for most student athletes, but these three women and Isaiah are different from the crowd. “Playing basketball might make things difficult at times, but I set a high standard for myself so I know I will keep my GPA above a 3.5,” said Caballero. Hall stated, “Playing in this sport will not have any effect on my college grades because I am very determined and committed to my school work and I know my grades are my first priority.” “Playing in a college sport will motivate me to dogreat in class so I can continue to play the sport I love,” explained Shafer. “Working hard both on the court and in the class have always been a prioirty to me and I will not let that change” com18 mented Isaiah.

These athletes are thinking farther than college when it comes to their future. They have chosen to play in these sports because it affects what career they want to go into after their education is over. Shafer and Hall both believe that competing at the college stage will help them become future coaches of the sports they are passionate about; Caballero thinks that she will be taught a plethora of life skills that she will be available to use later on in life and make life-long friendships. The final words these young athletes had to say about college sports were the most touching. “It is going to take a lot of effort and dedication but what you gain from the experience is worth every floor burn,” said Hall. “It is a complete honor to continue my dream at the next level and I am truly blessed for this opportunity. I do not know what my life would be like without sports,” stated Caballero. “I am really excited and ready to compete at the the next level. Sasquatch Pride!!” exclaimed Shafer. “I am so proud of myself for what I had to do to get to the place I am, and I am so thankful for the opporotunity and the people that helped me get here” stated Gonzales Wherever these athletes plan to go in life, they will always have Greyhound support behind them.

Carlos & Kevin By: Abigail Ocampo

January 8, 2013 was a day that drastically changed Grandview High School. It was the day that two beloved students passed away due to a car crash. Carlos Ochoa and Kevin Lopez were juniors at the time, meaning that this year they would have been seniors, and would have graduated with the class of 2014. Carlos and Kevin had many friends of all grade levels, but their class was affected most, they lost two of their classmates and for some, their best friends. Carlos was known around school for his creative rhymes and raps; he looked up to rapper Kid Cudi and wished to be like him someday. He would create raps for his classmates during class and would tag. He was known as artsy and had a great sense of humor. “It’s a really sad feeling knowing that one of my best friends will not be able to graduate with me. We all wish he was here with us for that important day. We know he is watching us though, I dedicate everything to him,” expressed one of his close friends, senior Andy Rodriguez. He then added, “I love you Carlos.” Kevin was known for always walking around with a smile, during first period he used to walk in late and surely with a Pepsi in his hand. Some of his friends remember his morning routine of going to the corner store and coming back late almost every morning. During class he was always laughing and cracking jokes with the people sitting next to him, and even if you were a stranger to him he treated you like a friend. “It’s really tragic and sad that he isn’t going to walk with us, but in the end I’d like to feel that he’s in a better place,” commented his friend Emmanuel Valdes. “It’s sad that he can’t graduate with us, but he will always be a part of the class of 2014” said another of his close friends, senior Emilio Perez. The year of 2013 was a struggle for the people that spent an immense amount of time with these two boys. Thinking of what could have happened if they were still here and adapting to everyday life without them was a challenge. “Everything would be different. We would have a brighter world and a brighter school. Carlos lit up everything. He was an amazing kid, student, friend, and brother,” continued Rodriguez “Adapting to everyday life was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I lost a best friend and a brother. He sat with me in classes and everything. Nothing was the same and nothing will ever be the same”. Although the boys and their friends did not always share the same classes, they would still see each other in the halls and greet each other. “My year would have been so much better, I would have probably skipped more though” Valdes resumed. “Adapting to everyday life was hard but not as hard as it would have been if I would have had him for a class.” Lunch is the time everyone can talk about how their day has been going, and upperclassmen have the privilege to go off campus and grab something else to eat. They can also just talk with their friends. Since Kevin had his car, he was able to take his friends out for lunch and just spend time with them. “If he was still here, the year would have definitely been a lot more fun. Kevin could make any situation better than it was,” Perez solemnly continued. “It was hard, especially since we went to lunch together a lot. It’s never easy adjusting to a loss like that, time may never heal these 26wounds but after a while you learn how to handle them.”

Even though the class of 2014 is moving forward with their lives after graduation, they will carry on and take with them the unforgettable memories they shared with these two boys. Carlos joined track and cross country throughout his high school career. He loved to run and could sometimes be seen running around town. “I will never forget the first race Carlos ran with our 4x1 relay team. When he got to the baton and he was running at me to hand it off, he had the biggest smile on his face. He was so happy to run with our team,” recalled Rodriguez. Kevin loved pulling pranks; he would do almost anything to get a smile or a laugh out of his friends. “The greatest memory I shared with him was the time Xabien, Adan, Kevin and I went to Yakima to hang out. We were just messing around having fun at Dairy Queen, and then we went cruising for an hour pulling pranks on random people.” remembered Perez. Both boys made a huge impact on the staff and students’ lives, leaving footprints on their hearts that no one could replace and forever leaving their names here at GHS.
