“The reality of the external world is used for illustration and proof, and so comes to serve the reality of our mind.”
The paranoiac’s way of seeing the world in a new light has been a prominent theory in architecture and the production of the real. However, this theory has always focused inward, trying to understand how the many interpretations of our own paranoiac view of the world can combine into the density of fact. But when does one focus on the paranoia of the masses, of the community, or of the society that we design for? As architects we must force the world to face their own paranoid thoughts in order to combine them into rational conclusions. Without that forced confrontation, architecture is no longer an object for the perception of the world, but instead just an egotistical creation from a hermetic mind.

The design of the SC Children’s Theater is symbolic of the conversation between chaos and order, imagination and reality, eccentric and ordinary. This theater is designed to awe while still being rooted in reality, inspiring children to wonder, think, and not be afraid to challenge their own imaginations.
The initial design process of the children’s theater was through an intricate study of diagrammatic models focusing on the site’s grid and connection to other points of interest in Greenville, South Carolina. The study model had three aspects from which the design of the theater took inspiration. The first was the implication of a shelled structure, having forms nestle within between one another. The second was a curved spinal layout from which the program would be oriented in plan. And the third was a hierarchal element that determined how the movement between small and large spaces was set up.
