MUSEUM OF ENVIRONMENT NORMAN, OK

The Oklahoma Museum of Environment, developed over two semesters, is an exaggeration of the site’s topography inspired by erosion. The building’s main form is gemlike, floating above a carved-out plaza level as if the rock’s entire base has been eroded by water. Paths inside the museum converge and diverge like rivers and lead visitors on a journey of discovery through rocky forms that define alternating spaces of compression and release, of movement and rest.

Inside the museum, winding paths open up to accomodate larger exhibits and give guests space to pause and rest. Creating dynamic spatial variation was a major point of emphasis during the building’s spring semester redesign, and the building’s meandering paths carve through rocky forms to create cavelike areas of compression and airy, canopylike areas of release.

MUSEUM OF ENVIRONMENT NORMAN, OK

Beneath the museum, an outdoor plaza level showcases different landscapes to educate visitors about the importance of water management. Oklahoma is at a crossroads; in the future the state could become a desert (left) or an oasis (right) depending on how its residents manage and value water. The images for this project were created using Rhino, Grasshopper, Revit, Lumion, and Photoshop.

PIXELS ULI COMPETITION 2016 HONORABLE MENTION PIXELS animates a blank screen in the heart of Midtown. The development amplifies the character of its surroundings to create distinct nodes of activity, or pixels, that anchor the pedestrian and bicycle circuits of the neighborhood. These pixels and their surrounding paths physically and socially connect Georgia Tech, Tech Square, Midtown, and Downtown Atlanta. Surrounded by existing hubs of activity, PIXELS is a collision of technology, art, and movement. Tech Square to the north, the development includes office space for startup technology companies, and its public spaces incorporate digital and high-tech art to reinforce its connection to Midtown’s northern arts district. This project was done in a group with four other students. I produced the images shown here, with the exception of the phasing plans within the larger phasing graphic. Images were produced in Revit, Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign.

CLAIBORNE RESTAURANT AND GREENWAY NEW ORLEANS, LA

11 STUDIO VIII

This site development aims to unify both sides of New Orleans’ Claiborne Avenue by replacing I-10 with a landscaped canal and continuous cross streets. The reestablished city grid, added streetcar stops, and pedestrian-friendly environment will support a new linear park that will help with stormwater management and conjure memories of Claiborne before I-10. The project’s greenway draws on the past, but the development looks forward as well: three buildings integrated into the park focus on community engagement and economic development. These buildings and the canal ensure that water moves through the site in accordance with the existing Lafitte Blueway plan. This was a group project, designed in collaboration with two other architecture students and two interior designers, but I produced all the content shown here and I was the primary designer for the restaurant.

CLAIBORNE RESTAURANT AND GREENWAY NEW ORLEANS, LA The restaurant has two exterior stairs that lead to a public patio overlooking the canal. This building displays modern interpretations of many New Orleans motifs, including overhang, horizontality, repeating structural elements, deep balconies, and response to climate. The building houses a small grocery store where produce from the nearby community center’s rooftop garden can be sold.

The project integrates seamlessly into the site and surrounding context, but its modern materials and forms speak to the Treme-Lafitte area’s rebirth. In detailing the project, sensitivity to context was carefully considered. The restaurant has the deep balconies and asymmetrical balance typical of surrounding architecture. The building also draws much of its spatial organization from the ‘shotgun’ forms of the residential architecture on both sides of Claiborne. The renderings for this project were produced in Revit and Photoshop. The wall section was produced in Revit.

MONASTERY WARR ACRES, OK

17 STUDIO VI The design challenge was to create a contemporary monastery on a sloped, undeveloped site near Oklahoma City. The project scenario emphasized site design, access, progression, and organization of public and private spaces. The design solution shown here utilizes terraced courtyards that lead visitors through a series of concrete gates to a place of rest near the creek at the bottom of the site (shown below).

MONASTERY WARR ACRES, OK

Because of the monastic lifestyle the project needs to support, design decisions were driven by the idea of power in simplicity. The facility steps down gradually with the natural slope of the site and does not contain any jarring angles that might interrupt the intended progression from the stress of everyday life to a place of tranquility near the chapel at the east end of the site. The project has two distinct zones: one for visitors, and one for the monks living on the site. Each zone has its own building, parking, and courtyards. Images were created with Rhino, Lumion, and Photoshop.

THE LANTERN

GOULD HALL, NORMAN, OK MIXED-USE BUILDING K ANSAS CIT Y, MO

Kansas City’s river market area has a strong pedestrian tradition, but this culture does not extend past the market’s boundaries. This studio project, a mixed-use building with retail on the first floor and apartments above, seeks to extend the river market’s pedestrian core by creating engaging, human-scaled street environments and by incorporating private roof decks that act as protected extensions of the public streets below. The image to the right was produced with Revit and Photoshop.

This studio project focused on integrating design with supporting building systems and documenting the project in Revit. This involved working with building components, site, mechanical components, detail components, and sheets in Revit. The image to the right was produced with Revit and Photoshop.

MUSEUM OF COLLAGE AND ASSEMBLY NORMAN, OK

This project involved studying collage and assemblage and using concepts from art as inspiriation for architectural design. The design solution mimics the tectonic nature of collage and the peeling and folding of delicate physical elements over time. The image to the right is a reproduction of a Picasso collage, and the organization of the piece informed the building’s spatial layout. The section image below was produced in Rhino, Flamingo, and Photoshop.

MASS + VOID

GOULD HALL,NORMAN, NORMAN, OK OK GOULD HALL,

29 STUDIO I

Studio I focused on how point, line, and plane create architectural masses and voids. The class investigated ways to derive 3D concepts from 2D drawings, and the images to the left show this process. The main assignment in Studio I was to study Gould Hall, OU’s architecture building, and design an alternate enclosure for the building’s voids. The drawing to the upper left is a study of Gould’s spaces on trace paper, and was the basis for the physical model on the far left.

PAPERBACK BOOKSTORE + COFFEESHOP NORMAN, OK

This project, located on the university’s campus corner, aims to engage pedestrians from all directions, since the entire area is walkable and the majority of visitors will likely arrive on foot. The interior courtyard is accessible from two major site access points and provides protection from Oklahoma’s driving winds. The airy interior and adjascent courtyard are connected visually through large windows and by plants and similar materials both inside and outside. The rendering on the right page was created in Rhino, Revit, Lumion, and Photoshop.
