Editor’s Spot: Baby Announcement! by Kelsey Snelgrove
After waiting 2 weeks past the “Estimated Due Date”, we are happy to announce that Fergus Donald Sungrove was born in the afternoon of December 12th, 2018! He is a robust boy with a birth weight of 9 lbs 11 ounces, and has a full head of super soft hair. We were able to follow our plan of having a homebirth with our awesome midwife and a close friend who provided amazing support throughout the pregnancy and birth. The name Fergus we originally heard in a piece of epic Irish literature, called Táin. It actually means “the angry one”, but we’ll do our best to raise a compassionate, loving boy. Donald was Paul’s dad’s name, who passed away at the beginning of this year.
As for Sungrove, this was a last name we created for our daughter from a combination of our own last names. As you know, my last name is Snelgrove and Paul’s is Matheson. We tweaked it a bit and created Sungrove because none of the other options (picking one name or hyphenating) felt right for us. A lot of people have asked “you can just make up a last name for your kid?” Yes, yes you can! Thank you to everybody for respecting the lovely “Do Not Disturb” sign Paul left in front of our house. We are enjoying recuperating and getting to know Fergus without having to answer the door all the time. We will be back with a January 4th issue. Have a great Christmas everyone!

Citizen of the Year Awarded This year we celebrated the dedication, commitment and hard work of 2 incredible citizens who were chosen to share the title of Citizen of the Year for 2018. Those i n d i v i du a l s were Chris Welch & Scott Koch. Scott Koch’s nominator described him as the “fearless leader of the Chase Heat Jr. Hockey Society”, who “spends endless hours doing all kinds of things for the Heat!”. He acts as an ambassador at all meetings with the KIJHL, with the community of Chase’s best interests at heart. As part of his duties with the hockey club he organizes and chairs all the Heat executive meetings where all the moving parts of the team come together. He oversees all aspects, like financials, team business, sky box organization and game day operations. He has a great group of volunteers who enjoy working with him and he always is quick to thank everyone and appreciates their involvement. Every great team has a great leader!! In addition, Scott has also been a councillor of the Village of Chase and a volunteer with he Royal Canadian Legion. “He is all around great guy who enjoys people and loves our little village. He is a huge supporter of anything Chase!!” Chris Welch was described as “a very ambitious lady who spends countless hours of volunteer services within our community. Chris has been a leader in the local T.O.P.S. group for many years, and continues to do so. She currently holds the position of Secretary of the Chase Legion Ladies Auxiliary, which she has held for several years. Chris is an aid long-time member of the quilting club. As a very astute and remarkable seamstress she has sewn vests for the Creekside Seniors,
along with altering curtains. Chris is well known for her services looking after the dishwasher duties for most Legion and Creekside Seniors functions for many years. Chris is also an active member of the Chase and District Health Services Foundation. Chris’s nominators feel that she is well deserving of the Citizen of the Year Award and on behalf of the majority of their 140 members, they graciously submitted the nomination for this wonderful lady. After the very exciting and emotional tribute to both incredible recipients, DJ Randy Sherman got everyone up onto the dance floor. If you haven’t had the pleasure of dancing to Randy’s mixing, you can catch him at Village Lanes Fun Centre with Friday with local DJ SpunLogic at their Mixmas celebration. To close the night off around 11 o’clock was a Late Night Snack provided by the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce. A great evening was had by all who attended. A HUGE thank you to the Christmas Gala Committee; Board of Directors and Business Members for all their hard work in the preparations of this great event.

Surviving the holidays: seven tips for your mental wellness submitted by Interior Health
The holiday season is often viewed as a time filled with fond childhood memories, happy family traditions, and joyful events. Although most of us have some happy times during the holidays, many of us also experience more difficult emotions, such as loneliness, stress, depression, and anxiety. This time of year brings up vulnerabilities such as memories of loved ones that we especially miss during holidays, recent break-ups, challenging family relationships, financial difficulty, being alone, and difficult childhood memories of this holiday. Beyond these issues, December’s hectic pace is enough to cause stress, anxiety, and frustration. It is possible to keep ourselves mentally well in the midst of excessive holiday cheer. Here are seven tips from Interior Health counsellors Seija Emond, Team Leader for the Cedar Sage Health and Wellness Clinic and Grant Heindl, Team Leader for Interior Health’s Adult Short-Term Assessment and Treatment Services (ASTAT): 1. Keep it simple: Start with the end result in mind. Ask yourself “How do I want to be feeling after the holidays?” and then “What do I have to do to end
up feeling that way?” If possible, do more things that will help you achieve that end result. 2. Make a plan: To look after yourself, be intentional and make time for selfreflection. Remember that you don’t have to be involved in everything. Plan a support system – have people you can connect with if you need to talk or reach out for help. 3. Set realistic expectations: Expect things will not be perfect. Expect others to behave as they normally do. Expect not everything will go as planned. When we are busy wishing things were different, we may miss moments that bring joy. 4. Balance self-care with caring for others: Make time for yourself while making time for others. 5. Avoid triggers: When it is possible, skillfully avoid those people and places that trigger negative emotions and memories for you. 6. Limit the use of alcohol and drugs. 7. Survive: Sometimes we won’t be able to have a “holly jolly Christmas.” If we make it through with ourselves and our relationships intact, we have succeeded. This year, take a step back, pause, and breathe. Try something different. Be well.

Pasta with Butternut Sauce, Spicy Sausage & Baby Spinach
Ingredients: 4 links spicy chicken Italian sausage 1 lb butternut squash, peeled and diced 1 tbsp whipped butter 10 oz pasta, wheat or gluten-free 1/4 cup shallots, minced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups baby spinach, roughly chopped 2 tbsp fresh shaved parmesan cheese 4 sage leaves, sliced thin salt and pepper, to taste
Directions: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add butternut squash and cook until soft. Remove squash with a slotted spoon and place in a blender, blend until smooth. Add pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package directions for al dente,
reserving at least 1 cup of the pasta water before draining. Meanwhile, in a large deep non-stick skillet, sauté sausage over medium heat until browned, breaking up with a spoon as it cooks. When cooked through, set aside on a plate. Reduce heat to medium-low and melt the butter, sauté the shallots and garlic until soft and golden, about 5 – 6 minutes. Add pureed butternut squash, season with with salt and fresh cracked pepper and add a little of the reserved pasta water (I used about 1 cup) to thin out the sauce to your liking. Add baby spinach and stir in parmesan cheese and sage. Toss in cooked pasta and sausage and mix until well coated. Serve with additional parmesan cheese on the side if desired.

Chase and District Fish and Game Update The CDFGC has been busy lately getting some important things accomplished. Most importantly was getting the gun range up at 724 Turtle Valley Road through its Firearms Permit inspection by the regional Firearms Officer. Directors at first were quite worried about this inspection due to the many changes to regulations over the years. However, since the gun range was built in the early 1960’s before most of these new regulations were even conceived, the CDFGC gun range has been grandfathered by the TNRD. The inspection went well and it is business as usual until the official paper work is received. Secondly the directors are busy planning and working on the annual CDFGC Banquet! It is now time to get your tickets!!! They sell out quickly, so now is the time to buy and mark it on your calendars! The banquet is on Saturday, February 2nd at the ALIB gym. Tickets at $30 each can be bought at Miller’s Cabin on Shuswap Ave in Chase, or by calling any one of the following CDFGC members. Mary Parkin 250-713-8799 Robert Parkin 250-463-1466 Ray Jackson 250-214-3223 Corey Sampson 778-257-1303 Vickey Bischoff 250-955-2359 There will be regular banquet food along with donated game or fish dishes. The DJ will be Tanner Dawson. There will also be a raffle for a camo Remington 783, .308 caliber, with an attached scope. A great entry level hunting rifle. In addition there is the usual silent auction donated items and 50/50 draws. The CDFGC would like to thank all the businesses and individuals that donate items to this cause. This is the major annual fundraiser of the CDFGC so it would be great to see you there. It is always a lot of fun! Tickets for the annual BCWF fundraising lottery are now available at $10 a ticket from most directors of the CDFGC. First prize is a 2018 SXT Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4 x 4, 2nd Prize an Angler Boat and Tohatsu 20hp motor, 3rd prize a Westjet Flight voucher of $2900 and an early bird prize of a gun safe. Director phone numbers are on our webpage at www.cdfgc.ca Lastly it is time for CDFGC membership renewals!!! With your renewal you will receive a gate key for 2019 as long as you have had an orientation. If you are a new member to our club you will have to take an orientation before you receive a key. Membership forms are available at Miller’ Cabin and on our website (see above). Paid memberships can be left at Miller’s cabin for pick

Chase and District Fish and Game Club meets the 3rd Monday of the month at Creekside Center at 7:30 pm. The next meeting is January 21st, 2019. We encourage all members to come out to the meetings and participate in this great club. New ideas are always welcome.

Local Player Lives ‘Every Kid’s Dream’ On December 16th, local Chase Minor Hockey player, Dominick Knorr of the Jr. Heat Atoms, lead the Vancouver Canucks onto the ice for their game against the Edmonton Oilers. Knorr, who is 11, was the winner of the Every Kids Dream contest that allowed him to sit at ice level watching the Canucks warm up pre game before tightening up his own skates. As the lights dimmed and the entrance song filled the arena along with the cheers of fans, Knorr took to the ice with the Canucks right behind. Knorr was able to take his place on the blue line beside any Canuck of his choosing from Sunday night’s starting line up. The local hockey player choose a spot between Alexandre Edler and Bo Horvat, two Canucks veterans. The three shared a few quick words before the anthem ended and Knorr exited the ice so the game could begin. “It was very exciting,” Knorr said about the whole
experience. “I felt like I was part of the team, everyone was cheering super loud.” The young player was able to take in the rest of his first live Canucks game, taking home a few souvenir pucks from the practice and memories what will surely last a lifetime. “My favourite part was when I got to talk to Edler and Horvat,” he said, however he quickly added, “the whole thing was awesome.” “Everyone should do it,” Knorr said with a smile, “one of my best friends Garrett got to do it last year too.” The Every Kids Dream contest is open to any BC Minor Hockey player who knows how to skate. Information on how to enter can be found on the official Canucks website.
