Later Time for Some Council Meetings submitted by the Village of Chase
Updates from the Village of Chase Your Council would like to thank as always, those folks in the community that are able to attend Council meetings. We understand that not everyone can attend meetings that start at 4 p.m., so one of our meetings in March and one in April will start at 7:00 p.m. – check our website (http://chasebc.ca) for the 2019 Council meeting schedule. In addition to regular meetings, Council has held one budget meeting and will be engaging in more budget meetings in the coming weeks. Our Chief Financial Officer is preparing the draft operational and capital budgets as our final invoices for services purchased in 2018 come in. The Village’s auditors will be in Chase the third week of February after which we will have verified 2018 expenditure and revenue figures which are used to ensure the 2019 budget is built on sound information. We are still awaiting updated information from BC Assessment as well as information from the Thompson Nicola Regional
MLS#146251
District (the fund requisition for services provided by the TNRD) – all those pieces of the puzzle are required to provide a good quality draft budget for Council’s consideration. Budget meetings will be well advertised, and we encourage public attendance at those meetings. Administration continues to provide as much information to Council as practicable, in order to support your elected officials in their roles as policy makers in our community. The roles and responsibilities of elected officials are defined in the Community Charter (Provincial legislation in BC that provides authorities to local governments) and are distinct from the roles of hired management and staff, in order to ensure smooth operations of service delivery in municipalities. Just as different staff in your local coffee shop have different roles, a similar principle guides the direction and ultimate operation of your municipal government. Continued on page 5...

What is love?
by Tyler Harper, Pastor - Chase Evangelical Free Church
We are now fully into February, the season of love. Kids are cutting out paper hearts, chocolate sales are again spiking, the cost of roses are sky high, and many peoples’ cinnamon intake has never been so high thanks to those little candy hearts (as a side note, who decided that cinnamon was a good flavour to associate with love and romance?) In the coming days we will hear a whole lot about love, even more than usual— the topic will infuse our music and symbols of it will take over bakeries and greeting cards stores and seep into clothing and coffee. But what is love? (Cue Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan in A Night at the Roxbury). But this question isn’t just for plastic 90’s dance music or a cheesy comedies but is actually a question for all of us. We all love and what we love shapes us. As philosopher James K.A. Smith points out “We are what we love”. What a person values, what a person holds dear forms us. The people I hold closely, the memories and mementos, the concepts and experiences that we see worth in transforms us into their image. The things that we love define us. Words I received from a trusted friend when discussing a relationship I was in “Tyler, you’re attracted to her, but do you want to be like her?” And so we all love, whether it is our spouse, or our family, or our friends, or our leisure, or our lifestyle. We all love, because to human is to love. But our original question still stands before us, what do I mean when I tell someone that I love them? Or what should I mean when I tell someone that I love them — after all words do have meaning. When many of us think about love we think about enjoyment and pleasure. We think about how something or someone makes us feel. We might say we love ice cream because we enjoy the creamy texture and smooth flavour, we might say we love someone because they make us feel good. Enjoyment and pleasure are
certainly related to love, but does loving someone simply mean we enjoy their company? If you have ever attended a Christian wedding, chances are you have heard words written by the Apostle Paul that describe the results of love, that Love is patient, kind, it does not envy, or boast, it isn’t proud, it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it seeks no record of wrongs, nor does love delight in evil but delights in the truth, it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. These are good words, these are important words, but these words are the results of love, they do not describe love itself. These things will naturally appear when we are loving. But what produces these amazing realities? Love is a counter intuitive thing because love isn’t about our enjoyment , or our pleasure, or our desires, but love is all about the other. Love is a willingness to sacrifice for the sake of someone else or something else. Love isn’t butterflies in our stomachs, or a warm feeling when we are near someone. Love isn’t a shared taste in music or a common point of view, love is a willingness to forgo for the loved. Love is a willingness to give up for the sake of the object of our love. Whether this means giving up other relationships, giving up habits, giving up status, giving up control, or giving up our lives. Love is able to do all these amazing things, because love is counterintuitive. Love gives because it’s not about us, but about the object of our love. This is why love shapes us, because it scrapes off all that isn’t love. This is love and I hope that this February you don’t just have love in your life—because we all love— but that your love is directed to what will make yourself and our world better, what will make you whole. Maybe the question we need to ask isn’t what is love, but what do we love?

Village of Chase Updates
Several workshop meetings have been taking place with Council and their management team since the October 2018 election to help everyone understand each other’s responsibilities and to ensure new Council members HORIZO NTAL understand all of the aspects of the Village’s business . It is incumbent on Administration to help support the Council to do the best job they can for our community. Council has several liaisons to various local area groups and organizations, which are intended to provide a conduit of information between the various groups and the municipal government. For example, Councillors Maki and Lauzon are liaisons to the Youth Action
Committee, while Councillor Scott is the liaison to the Adams River Salmon Society. Councillor Torbohm is the liaison to the Chamber of Commerce as well as to the business community generally, ensuring that information is shared and there is an avenue for relationship building. The more we work together as a community, the more resilient we become. If there are any questions about what your local government does and who does what, please remember you can email us at chase@chasebc.ca, phone us at 250.679.3238 or come in and see us. And please if you can, attend Council meetings!”

Obituary Gudrun (Goodie) Stevens
On Thursday, January 31, 2019, Gudrun Stevens, fondly known as Goodie, went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ at the age of 69 with her family surrounding her. Gudrun came into the world on May 21, 1949 in Killam AB to Otto & Sigrid Bergseth. She went to school there for several years before the family moved to Mayerthorpe AB where she went to school until Gr 10. She finished her schooling in Kamloops getting her GED. Goodie loved to read her Bible so she could know Jesus better, and so she could take every opportunity to tell everyone about Jesus. Her loving kindness shone through her heart to all who met her. She took extra care to dress and look beautiful wherever she went. Goodie’s passion and love for the elderly showed in her job as a health care worker for many years. All through Goodie’s life she always went out of her way to help the elderly and anyone else who needed help. If you needed a lawyer just call Goodie! Goodie loved little children and it showed. She was a foster parent for many children waiting for adoption. She would miss the children she cared for when they found their forever homes. She trained to be a secretary for real estate and even sold a home! Goodie was an avid bowler. She won a position to play in the finals in Nelson where she placed second. Goodie loved playing crib at the Creekside Seniors Centre in Chase where she served as a director in the community. In all that Goodie did throughout her life she did it with a kind, loving, caring, compassionate heart that shone through it all. Goodie Stevens is survived by her husband Erwin, her daughter Kerry, and her son Darren. Her sister Evelyne (Gordon), her brother Knute, her sister Susie (Jim), her brother Rodney (Shirley), her brother Harold (Lorraine) and her brother Brian (Joanne). Goodie was predeceased by bother her parents, her brother Johnny and her brother Einar. Her Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11 am at Creekside Senior Centre at 542 Shuswap Ave, Chase BC. In lieu of flowers, please donate money to help Kerry, her daughter, make dresses for little girls in 3rd world countries around the world. Goodie was proud of Kerry for helping little girls in need.
Page 7 • February 8th, 2019 • Chase Sunflower Obituary Barkman , Chuck (Charles) Howard February 24, 1951 – December 12, 2018
Chuck Barkman went to be with his Lord and Saviour on December 12 at the age of 67, his wife by his side. Predeceased by parents, Martha and Walter Barkman and an older brother, Ralph in childhood. Survived by his loving wife Ginny of 20 years; his sons Bryan (Leah) and Rick (Jolene); sisters Dolores and Patricia (Mark); brother David (Laura); grandchildren Bridgette and Grayson, Ginny’s daughters, Melissa (grandson Kaleb) and Erica (John); nieces and nephews, their spouses and children and many cousins. Chuck was born in Three Hills, Alberta and moved with his family to Chase in 1965 where he attended Chase Secondary School. All his adult life he worked in construction, building homes and structures in Chase and the Shuswap. He had a great interest in sports, especially hockey and baseball. When his sons were old enough to play ball he drove them to countless games and for many years he coached both boys’ and women’s softball. When young nieces and nephews came to visit he enjoyed taking them hiking, swimming and cross country skiing. It was a special treat for them when he would switch on his model railway in his basement room. Following his love for model railroading, Chuck (with nickname, CeeBee, as he became known) also came to be a long distance “beta tester” for many years, for Auran, a computer software company based in Australia, testing and contributing to their model railroading simulation software, Trainz. He was well known for their inclusion to the Trainz 2004 version, of Chuck’s “Highland Valley Railway”, that started many on the path to computerized model railroading. He also contributed to the Platinum Version of Railroad Tycoon 2, with his Interior British Columbia portrayal of our Kamloops and Shuswap, area, through the PopTop Developers, published in 2003, with whom he followed closely, during those years. An avid Canuck’s fan, he was also a big supporter of Chase Heat and enjoyed attending many hockey games with Ginny. Their backyard garden with its small fruit trees gave him a great deal of pleasure throughout their years together. He enjoyed viewing the night sky with his telescope, hiking, birdwatching, and woodworking, building bird feeders, bat houses, bird houses and other inventive things. Chuck was kind and considerate, curious and interested in life, always ready with a smile. He will be greatly missed. A few years ago, Chuck found out that he had a genetic condition that destroys both the liver (and in turn, the lungs), and was also the likely cause of his older brother, Ralph’s death. Chuck eventually came onto the list for a liver transplant, but was still in the “pre-assessment” stage when he passed away in Vancouver General Hospital, due to a sudden and swift decline. Special thanks to Dr. Glanville, Dr Widmer, Dr. Reid, and the doctors, nurses and staff that cared for him, both at Shuswap Lake Hospital, Salmon Arm, BC and Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, BC and to the Transplant Team who kept a close watch on him, during his time in Vancouver. Memorial donations may be made to Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, and the Canadian Liver Foundation, www.liver.ca. A Celebration of Life will be held sometime in Spring.

Letter to the Editor Views expressed in Letters to the Editor do not reflect those of the Chase Sunflower’s editor or advertisers. The opinions are those of the letter-writer only. Letters must include a full name and may be edited for length, clarity or content. Submit letters to info@chasesunflower.ca, please keep submissions brief. This is a letter to Chase residents who are against the cell tower proposal for Chase. Cell towers need to be in certain locations to bounce off each other, so you can get cell service in hard to reach places. We still have dead spots between Chase and Kamloops, so heaven forbid, if you are on your way to Kamloops and your car breaks down in a dead spot, you have no cell service to call a tow truck because you said
“No” to the cell tower proposed for Chase. Funny how people want all the up to date modern phones but “don’t put that cell tower near me or my children”. You can’t have one with out the other. You may need it one day and it will not be there so who do you blame now. Terry Hudson

BEATING BRUINSby Scott BUTKoch,MAULED BY MAD BEARS Chase Heat Inspiration for tales of hunting are hard enough, but for the travails of a losing hockey team, they are a genuine hardship, hence the title of this trivia. The HEAT got it right this past weekend, they won at home and lost on the road. The faithful fans at the local Chaos Castle were treated to an entertaining night on Friday the 1st. The roster included 4 call up’s due to numerous banged up regulars unable to do the tube skate boogie. Inspired by the tenacity of the wannabes the veterans rose to the occasion versus the Grand Forks BORDER BRUINS. Russell Hassler got the crowd up and clapping 3 minutes in to the 1st period from Breckin Erichuk and Marino Bordin. The Forks got that one back, however Hayden Wiebe from Evan Vinterlik and Erichuk regained the lead. With 25 seconds to go Brayden Haskell from Cody Allen made it 3-1. In the 2nd Kobe Pavlovich got his 1st of the season from Gavin Mattey and Vinterlik. Once again Chase allowed the visitors to score, but Erichuk popped a counter in from Wiebe and Ty Collens. In the 3rd the HEAT weathered the hunger of the BRUINS to claim a 5-3 home ice victory and the fans left with a skip in their steps. Dylan Barton between
