illage of Chase Mayor and Council has been listening to the community over the past few weeks regarding the NGC Pilot project. Feedback that has been provided by members of the Village of Chase was shared with Minister Todd Stone at UBCM in Victoria last week. As a result of that sharing of information, the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone has issued the following statement to the communities of Chase and Qualicum Beach on the province’s Neighbourhood Vehicle pilot program.

NOW OPEN!

“I’m writing today to thank the mayors and councils of the Village of Chase and the Town of Qualicum Beach for joining with the Province in a pilot project to bring neighbourhood golf carts safely to British Columbia streets. “This program was designed to provide people, particularly seniors, with more transportation options so they can stay engaged in their community and access services that make their lives better. And the Village of Chase and the Town of Qualicum Beach have been great partners as we pilot this idea in both those communities. Continued on page 3

Neighbourhood News: Chase kid raises $$$ for rod

by Cavelle Layes A six-year-old Chase boy is doing everything he can to earn the money for a new fly rod, and after a few days he has almost reached his goal. Jesse Johnson has been fishing since he was three-years-old and he simply loves it. “My favourite times are the funny ones,” Jesse said. Like when I fought four and my Dad and Oma caught nothing.” Jesse has already eyed out the fly rod he would like, but the price tag said $300. Jesse’s dad Tim Johnson made a deal with Jesse that if the 6-year-old could make $150, he would pay the other half. “I thought it was better that he wanted

to make money for a fly rod rather than an Xbox,” Tim said. So Jesse set to work. He gathered toys from his room which he no longer wanted, and borrowed some money from his parents. With the money he bought supplies like chips and pop and created a sign. In no time at all Jesse was set out in his front lawn on Brooke Drove with stand selling his items. Continued on page 4...

Rethinking 30 Km/Hr

“In fact, we introduced this project as a pilot in these two communities to ensure that these new vehicles can be safely operated and will be a benefit to the entire community - both for the people who will use them and for those of you who will share the road with them. “Over the last couple of months, the Province and the mayors and councils of both Qualicum Beach and Chase have collectively engaged with residents in these two communities to get feedback on the pilot project. We have received a number of ideas, and some concerns, most notably with respect to setting 30km/hour maximum speeds on roads where these vehicles would travel. “I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say how important it is for us to listen to residents of our communities and to

address their concerns. Good feedback is key to the success of a pilot project like this and we’re very grateful for the input we have received to date. “As a result of this community input, and the responsiveness of both Qualicum Beach and Chase councils, I believe it makes sense for us to take some time over the winter to address the concerns we’ve heard to make sure that this project is a success in the spring for your communities. This will include a re-think of the 30km/hour maximum speed limit. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with both Chase and Qualicum Beach to ensure the feedback we receive continues to inform how we move forward with this pilot project and assists everyone in helping to make this pilot project a success.”

Uniting Lions to Improve Sight and Prevent Blindness submitted by Chase Lions

Since 1988, Lions World Sight Day has raised awareness about the importance of eye health and the need for quality eye care services for all. On this special day of service, Lions clubs around the world conduct sight-related projects including: vision screenings, eyeglass donations, Restorative surgeries, eye health education programs, and the donation of assistive devices to those with vision

impairment. This year the Chase Lions Club will hold their World Sight Day, October 26, 2016. A community table will be set up in the downtown core where people can drop off their used eyeglasses. All year, the Chase Lions Club collects glasses and once a year we send the glasses to help other countries who cannot afford to purchase eyeglasses. Watch for more details.

With very reasonable prices and a whole lot of charm, Jesse was able to take in over $97 from two days. Adding in the savings from his piggy bank, Jesse is now at a whopping $100, and he can’t wait to see what the container looks like when he meets his goal. Jesse only has $50 left to raise and plans

on hitting the street hard this week with his stand. Those who would like to purchase chips , pop, or even a gently used toy, on behalf of this small but passionate entrepreneur, are encouraged to swing by Brooke Drive this weekend.

Farmhouse Crispy-Creamy Potatoes

Ingredients 1½ lb. red potatoes 1½ tsp. herbes de Provence Kosher salt 1½ stick unsalted butter ½ c. canola oil ½ c. extra-virgin olive oil 16 fresh sage leaves 2 sprig fresh rosemary 2 sprig fresh thyme 2 head garlic

Directions In a large pot, bring potatoes, herbes de Provence, 1 tablespoon salt, and enough water to cover by 2 inches to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and boil potatoes until tender when pierced with a sharp knife, about 15 minutes. Drain potatoes and set aside.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large, ovenproof pan over medium heat, melt butter. Add canola and olive oils, 12 sage leaves, 1 1/2 sprigs rosemary, and 1 1/2 sprigs thyme. Carefully turn reserved potatoes into pan and bring liquid to a simmer, 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer pot to oven and roast potatoes for about 40 minutes. Remove pot from oven and add garlic and remaining sage, rosemary, thyme, and 1 teaspoon salt. Continue to roast until potatoes are deeply browned and crisp and garlic is tender, 45 to 60 minutes more. Using a slotted spoon, transfer potatoes to a paper-towel-lined pan to drain and cool for 10 minutes. Season with salt, if desired. With each serving, offer a few roasted garlic cloves.

Mile House. An hour prior to game start the visitors phoned telling the locals that their wagon train had broken down in Kamloops. Fresh horses were found and the scheduled game went ahead but an hour later. Similar to the past evening the Cariboo Crew got on the board first, James Gordon on the powerplay. But the Shuswap Squad got a pair of 5 on 4 scores from Mason Palaga assisted by Moore and Fidanza and then Brady from Kaden Black and Beaubien. The WRANGLERS guns fired bullseyes twice in the 2nd from Mitch Turko and Justin Bond. No scoring in the 3rd saw the visitors ride out of town with a 3-2 win. Zak Larson got his first start of the season between the posts for the HEAT stopping 42 of 45 in a solid performance. There were 32 minor infractions called in this contest, 20 of them in the 1st period, as both teams found their way to the sin bin. As a result there were too many 5 on 3’s and no consistent flow to a wearisome contest for the fans. Chase was bumped out of top spot in the Division as 100 Mile House leapt ahead of the HEAT. On Friday the 7th the HEAT face the Summerland STEAM. The game continues the month long focus on Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. However, our very special guests that evening will be the Female Players and their Coaches representing our town from Chase Minor Hockey. Please join them in celebrating World Girls Hockey Weekend!
