OUT EVERY WEEK

Life is perspective (snow) by Tyler Harper

As I sit down to pen my regular column our fair village is simultaneously labouring under the weight of the most recent snowfall while also standing ready for its photoshoot of seasonal grandeur. If there is one thing I have learned about winter in Chase, is that there are basically two views about winter and the white stuff that is associated with it. The first persuasion may be referred to as the youth view. This faction associates snow with sledding, snowshoeing, and picturesque landscapes (as well as the local businesses that see an uptick in business related to snow covered surfaces and slowed travel to the bigger centres). The second might be referred to as a more mature opinion. This is a slant which sees these seasonable aspects as a simple nuisance wishing that snow could be eviscerated —similar to polio or the plague — or maybe at best a necessary evil. Maybe as you read these words you clearly see yourself in one of these associations, regardless of the number on your birth certificate, maybe you can see yourself fitting into one crowd or the other, or just as likely, you can see some aspects of both in your perspective. Perspective changes how we experience life. The phrase “one’s man’s junk is another man’s treasure” isn’t just a reflection on how people respond to physical stuff, but is also a reflect of our perspective. We’ve all heard stories of families discarding family ‘junk’, only to have it discovered that this apparent clutter contains priceless pieces of art or fortunes of long forgotten investments. One person’s yellowed scrap paper is to another person a valuable land title,

bond certificate, or stock. The question is, are we willing to let our perspectives on snow, or on more meaningful things be flexible? There have been days when winter has gotten in the way of the things that I wanted to do, of plans that I had made, expectations that I had longed for— and yet these times when weather has stopped my agenda has often turned out to be some of my most memorable times with family and friends— all that had to change was my perspective on the situation. Sometimes perspective is equal and relative. A five-year-old looking to get out on ice to skate and slide has an equal perspective to a 95 year old who avoids the same surface in hopes of keeping bones in tack. These perspectives are relative to their situation and stage in life. But some perspectives are anything but equal and relative. We may have different perspectives on what happens when water reaches zero degrees Celsius or which lane of travel we prefer to use, but the slick surface that appears as the mercury drops or the Mack truck coming head on reminds us that some perspectives are certainly based in reality and others in fantasy. Are we willing to put aside our skewed perspective for a greater perspective? Are we willing to a look past what we can see to allow ourselves to be drawn into a perspective that is greater than our own? Whether that is the best way to experience snow or what is the meaning of life are you and I willing to engage with a bigger perspective, a perspective that is not our own but one that reaches out to us through space and time? Tyler (tyler@chasechurch.com) is the Pastor at Chase Evangelical Free Church.

RCMP REPORT submitted by Chase RCMP

TRAFFIC • On December 31, 2018 members of the Chase RCMP Detachment and South East District Traffic Services were conducting a check stop at the intersection of Squilax Anglemont Rd and Little Shuswap Lake Rd in Lee Creek, BC. At approximately 10:25pm, a male driving a GMC truck approached police officers and came to a stop. When police directed the man to park his vehicle as he was being requested to provide a sample of his breath the man fled the area in the truck. Police later located the truck, parked, and arrested a 49-yearold Chase area man. He was released on a Promise to Appear in Kamloops Provincial Court.

• On January 22nd, 2019 at approximately 6:55am, Chase RCMP received a report of a two vehicle collision on Squilax Anglemont Road in Celista BC. Celista Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service and Chase RCMP Responded. Investigation determined a westbound Ford Escape had begun to skid on the snow and ice covered roadway when it crossed the centre line and collided head on with an eastbound school bus. The school bus was occupied by the driver only. Both drivers were treated on scene by ambulance for minor injuries and released on scene. Squilax Anglemont Road was closed for a short period of time while the vehicle and debris was cleared.

• On January 6, 2019 at 6:25 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a two vehicle collision occurring on Squilax Anglemont Road near the intersection of Holding Road in Lee Creek, BC. Police determined that the driver of a Suzuki Swift stopped in the westbound driving lane to pick up an injured owl from the roadway. The driver had placed the owl in the passenger seat and was returning to the driver’s side when a westbound Hyundai Sante Fe drove into the Suzuki from behind. The collision caused the Suzuki to hit the driver who was still outside of the vehicle. The driver of the Suzuki was injured and transported to the Royal Inland Hospital by Ambulance for treatment. The driver of the Hyundai was uninjured. While the members were assessing the collision the owl woke and flew away.

PROPERTY • On January 19, 2019 at Chase RCMP received a report of a theft from a property on Foort Road in Pritchard, BC. Sometime overnight suspects stole a White Dodge Ram and a cargo trailer containing numerous tools and equipment. The truck and trailer were located later that day with the contents of the trailer missing.

• On January 13, 2019 at approximately 7:15 pm, members of Chase RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a black Dodge Ram on Squilax Anglemont Rd at Holding Road in Lee Creek, BC. The driver, a 38-year-old Scotch Creek resident, was found to be driving while impaired by alcohol. The man was issued a 90 day immediate roadside prohibition and his truck was impounded for 30 days.

• On January 21st, 2019 Chase Detachment members recovered a majority of the trailer’s contents. The police investigation into those responsible for this theft is ongoing. Anyone with any information regarding this investigation, or any other crime, is asked to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 679-3221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. OTHER • On January 1st, 2019 at 9:20 pm, the Chase RCMP were advised of a missing snowmobiler on Crowfoot Mountain, Celista, BC. Members of the Crowfoot Mountain Snowmobile Club were searching for a man who did not contact family as planned. Members of the Snowmobile Club located the man, who had gotten his snowmobile stuck, shortly after midnight. The man was assisted and all involved returned

safe and uninjured. • On January 11, 2019 at 1250pm, Chase RCMP received a report of a snowmobile collision occurring in the Bird’s Nest Cabin area of Crowfoot Mountain, Celista, BC. Police were advised a male had injured himself when he flew off his snowmobile and striking the handlebars. BC Air Ambulance responded and were able to land near the injured man and transport him to the Royal Inland Hospital for treatment.

THE BUMPY REGULAR SEASON HIGHWAY by Scott Koch, Chase Heat

Life as a 16-20 year old Junior hockey player in Chase comes with an assortment of impediments to a safe and successful journey to the ultimate destination. The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, is of course, a KIJHL League Championship. This season`s travellers have had a difficult time staying on the road, let alone arrive successfully at a playoff spot. There is still time to monkey wrench the good ship lollipop to achieve that goal, but time is short and now, is the time where all oars need to be paddling hard and in the same direction. With 9 games remaining in the regular season the HEAT find themselves 7 points out of the playoffs. So the fragile tale to tell commences with the Mad Bears from the Mountain Mecca firing an avalanche of goals past the locals. On Tuesday the 15th Chase travelled to Revelstoke to face the GRIZZLIES. The first mistake was getting off the bus, the hosts scored twice in the 1st and twice in the 2nd before Breckin Erichuk scored with an assist to Gavin Mattey. Then Tyson Lampreau popped one in through a great individual effort. In the 3rd Mattey unassisted scored just after the Stoke crew went up by 3. The flood gates opened up and Revelstoke buried the HEAT with

5 unanswered goals to claim a 10-3 home ice win. With battered egos in place the HEAT faced the CHIEFS from Kelowna on Friday the 18th. After just being battered by the top team in their Division the locals now faced off versus the best team in the KIJHL. Kelowna threw 11 apples in the basket to claim an 11-4 thrashing of the struggling Chase crew. Kelowna scored 4 times in the 1st before Erichuk from Tony Dennis got Chase on the board. In the 2nd the CHIEFS scored twice more prior to Evan Hughes from Erichuk getting goal number two. Evan Vinterlik from Cody Allen than scored the HEAT`s third goal, but Kelowna got another before Erichuk from Brett Alexander on the powerplay made it interesting. Kelowna however popped in 4 in the 3rd to claim the win. On Saturday night the 19th this tale took an interesting turn, at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. In front of 277 faithful fans the HEAT displayed an entertaining and hardworking effort to leave the ice with a 5-2 important win over the rival Sicamous EAGLES. In the 1st Hayden Wiebe assisted by Erichuk, prior to Lampreau tapping in a goal after some flash and dash from Mattey set it up. In the 2nd Sicamous

tied it at 2-2. However, in the 3rd Erichuk scored right off the faceoff with a lot of dipsy and a little doodle. That was followed by a blue line blast from the stick of Allen, helped somewhat by Lampreau and Erichuk. The 16 year old Marino Bordin than put syrup on the ice cream with an empty net goal with 2 seconds left. Breckin Erichuk figured in all 3 of the contests with 4 goals and

3 assists, while Dylan Barton played standout netminding in the Saturday Evening Special versus Sicamous. Next up a home and home series versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. The Cariboo Cowboys hit town Saturday the 16th at 7 pm at the local Chaos Castle. Come out and cheer on OUR team in their pursuit of a playoff berth
