Wildfire Update: Shuswap Community Foundation

Integrity, Honesty, Commitment

Proven Leadership

submitted

The wildfires that swept through the North Shuswap region this summer had a devastating impact on homes, businesses, and disrupted the lives of many individuals and families. In response to this crisis, the Shuswap Community Foundation (SCF) established the Emergency Response Fund (ERF) to aid in the recovery and rebuilding of affected communities. To date, the Fund has received nearly $800,000 in donations from generous individuals and community partners. Recognizing that those best suited to lead the community’s recovery efforts are its own members, the foundation is deeply grateful to local community leaders that rose to the occasion to form the North Shuswap Disaster Relief Society (NSDRS). This volunteer community group works with a multitude of organizations to efficiently deliver resources and support to the residents of North Shuswap who are most in need. Their decisions are informed by local knowledge, ensuring a timely and targeted response. Illustrating the depth of this community connection, NSDRS volunteers conduct needs assessments and facilitate funding applications by visiting individuals in their current or former residences. Priority is given to those requiring winter accommodation, individuals in need of power, water, or septic services, and those seeking assistance to make their homes winter friendly. Additionally, funding support is extended to individuals who have lost their livelihoods due to the absence of tools or shelters for their business activities. While the Society acknowledges that they have not yet identified the entirety of needs created by the wildfire, they express gratitude to residents for sharing their stories, providing valuable insights that guides their efforts.

In the two weeks following its founding, the Society received six applications that are in the final stages of the approval process. • The most common request so far is power poles to connect to a trailer while they rebuild. • Other requests include lumber, windows, storage facilities for personal effects, and tools of trade to enable people to get back to work and/or rebuild their homes. Everyone has their unique circumstances, but they all share a vision for the future, taking it one step at a time. The applicants’ plans are highly practical, and NSDRS is Have Your Voice Heard customizing assistance to align Working Together with those specific needs. For Change Thus far, the Shuswap Community Authorized by Foundation has delivered over $180,000 in Alison (Ali) Lauzon 250-319-4034 grant funding to NSDRS, the Shuswap Trail Alliance, and the Lakeview Community Centre to support recovery efforts. The foundation has implemented a streamlined process to ensure swift and efficient funding for these groups as they work towards rebuilding the community. Despite these early successes, all involved recognise that the recovery and rebuilding of these communities will require millions of dollars and take place over many years. Individuals and families have lost their residences and livelihoods, and the costs associated with rebuilding homes, providing psychological support, and aiding in community restoration far exceed the current Tanja Wilson available funds. for COUNCIL Continued on page 4... •

Candidates for Council Rick Berrigan

I have been a resident of Chase for over 28 years and been directly involved with this community for going on 25 years. I have spent 12 years with the Chase Fire Department with 5 as the fire chief. I’ve also sat on council for 10 years, 4 as the Mayor. I have sat on several committees such as TNRD, and was Vice Chair of hospital board. I created the Youth Action Committee, which is still going today with great success. I have proven experience in lobbying senior government with great success. I along with others was a strong influence on our only in Canada golf carts which has also showed good success. What I would like to bring as a council member is experience and team planning for the best interest of the community. I’m fiscally responsible and believe in transparency. My team role would be to support current council and to listen and support this community on the best interest possible. I would like to see growth in Chase keeping the interests of the people of Chase first and foremost. Thank you.

Kim CAMPBELL

First and foremost I would like to thank the people who nominated me to run for Chase council. I have lived in the Chase area for 30 plus years, the last 10 years in Chase. I have witnessed in those years many, many changes in the village of Chase. Although I have never ran for council in our community, I have had involvement and experience with the City of Kamloops in regards to serious Bylaw issues, as being a Bylaw officer for the city we were requested to attend council meetings as well as BC Provincial court proceedings. I love our community of Chase, I’ve seen many more younger families move to our area which was evident at the Chase Country Christmas parade and the Christmas train. I’m running for council for many reasons. We have lost businesses in the downtown core, streets covered with potholes water meter replacements, and other issues such as Administration, Tourism, Recreation, Taxation and Rising Utility taxes. These are priority issues within our village that seem to be attended to. So at this time I would like to encourage everyone young and old to attend the candidates meeting on January 8 / 6:30pm at the Community Hall to ask and listen to what the candidates have to say. No more same old same old Time to move Ahead. Vote Kim Campbell for Council

Beverley IGLESIAS

• Raised in the Chase Creek Valley, moved to Chase early 80’s • 30-year businessperson • 20 years - Community Service volunteer – Project fundraising to financially assist people, groups & multiple municipal amenities. • Married, 2 daughters & one amazing new grandson. Pertinent Experience: • Sales background emphasising public relations, a strategic communication tool. • Reading, writing, and researching contractual agreements. • Reporting & submitting annual financial statements for Limited company plus Trust accounts. • Diverse negotiating and problem solving. • Actively attending numerous Village Council meetings, keeping informed on municipal matters. Having ran a local business for many years, I’ve gained extensive knowledge of our community, and it’s needs. Being retired, I now have the time, energy, and commit to work for the people of Chase. CONTACT: 250-371-7136 or email bev4council@gmail.com Priority issues: 1. Fiscal financial accountability. Chase appears landlocked with no area to expand but upwards. 2. Our taxes and utilities continue to climb with little population growth. 3. Infrastructure and roads are in dire need of repair. With Council annual budget deliberations (April), I urge the Community to attend and see where our tax dollars are being spent. 4. Chase received a grant $1,547,000.00 in 2023, (Growing Communities Fund) to address community’s unique infrastructure and amenities demands – such as recreation facilities, parks, etc. Encourage community interaction on the allocation of these funds. 5. Open and effective communication between the residents and the Village of Chase, motivates community engagement and increases public participation. 6. Preparedness. Are we ready for a major disaster? Flooding, Highway (accidents) involving dangerous goods, Railroad, Wildfires. It’s no longer “IF” but “WHEN”. COMMUNITY AND COUNCIL WORKING TOGETHER Authorized by Beverley Iglesias 250-371-7136

Alison LAUZON Allow

me

Dan Stevens

to

introduce myself. My name is Alison Lauzon. My husband Brian, & I have been residents of Chase for well over 25 years, raising our 3 grown children here in Chase. I have been involved with several service groups in Chase over the years, (Chase Minor Hockey, Chase & District Fish and Game Club, Youth Action Committee, Chase Country Christmas Committee, Chase Hamper Society, Chase Fire Rescue, and the Chase Firefighters Association). In 2018 I was elected to the Village of Chase Council, and served a 4-year term, 2018-2022. I have experience, and the confidence to speak up for the residents of Chase.

I’m honest,

dedicated and committed to listening to the residents of Chase and to bring their thoughts and concerns forward. I am employed as a Finance Director, my background in Finance equips me with the ability to analyze financial information, enables me to foster financial accountability within the Council, and assist in making sound financial decisions that align with the best interests of the Village of Chase. I would like to thank all Candidates for putting their names forward and wish them all the best of luck.

I have lived in Chase for 25 years, volunteering for two decades. From the fire department to minor hockey, FireSmart™ and numerous events, I am active in our community. My fiancé Kassie and I are grateful to live in Chase on the traditional unceded territory of the Secwépemc People. I am an outspoken ally of public safety, inclusivity, growth, reconciliation, business and non-profit organizations, transparent government, and climate action. My journey has been a saga of continuous learning and growth. I obtained an emergency and security management Diploma from the JIBC in 2023 specializing in emergency management, disaster planning, and public safety. In 2009, I attended the Training Division Fire Academy. I graduated from Chase Secondary School in 2007. I find motivation in ongoing education and personal and professional development, avoiding complacency with my achievements. Professionally, I am the FireSmart BC Education & Outreach Coordinator. I support the building of wildfire-resilient communities at a provincial level. I lead and co-lead regional and provincial committees, organize and deliver training & public education, and liaise with municipal and provincial stakeholders and First Nations partners. I assist rural communities in building capacity within their local governments - creating jobs and strengthening communities. The present challenges in the Village demand immediate attention. Our community grapples with vacant storefronts, depleted reserves, insufficient emergency management, and outdated infrastructure resulting in rising fees- but presenting an opportunity for improved governance. It’s time for fresh perspectives, not recycled ideas. I look forward to collaborating with the current council on tourism, housing, environmental stewardship, business, education and recreation, infrastructure, health and safety, and transparency - the keystones to an opportune and thriving community. We wish you a Happy New Year as we embark on this transformative journey together! Platform: https://danstevens.ca Facebook: @Vote4Dan Email: Contact@DanStevens.ca

Tanja Wilson

Hello to all of the community members of the Village of Chase!! My name is Tanja (pronounced Tanya) Wilson. I am new to the Village (as of September 1, 2023). I am a Registered Social Worker, with a Specialization in Indigenous Studies, and I am a proud Metis woman. I am the Mother of 3 beautiful daughters and Kokum to 6 AMAZING grandchildren. I am employed with School District #73 as an Aboriginal Family Counselor. I work at Chase Secondary School two days a week, and Haldane Elementary School one day a week. The other two days a week I work at four different elementary schools in Kamloops. I have never ran for a political position before, however I have years of experience advocating for people on a variety of matters (housing, education, mental health concerns, etc.). I am running for the vacant Council position because I know that I can advocate for all of you. My biggest priority is the youth. The youth are our future, and if our youth are suffering (which they are) how are they going to assist us/look after us in the future? We need to focus on their well being: physical, mental, and spiritual. I understand that there is a large population of elders in the Village. I also understand that there is a need for safe, affordable housing, and I am a strong believer in this being an option for EVERYONE!! There are young families that need housing, as well as everyone else. In order for a community to grow, there needs to be a variety of ages in the community; from newborns to elders, and all of those in between. A form of public safety that is a concern for me is the truck traffic on the highway outside of the village. tanya.wilson@alumni.unbc.ca 1-250-640-5799 (text)
