Rockin’ the Park in Chase on the July Long Weekend! by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer
W
hat’s a long weekend without good music and a good time? An event planned in Chase for Saturday, June 29, will definitely fill the bill. Tribute band “Completely Creedence,” from Vancouver Island ignites any event with the hits of a famous rock group active in the late 1960’s and early 70’s, namely “Creedence Clearwater Rival,” (CCR), who sold over 30 million albums and singles in the USA alone. CCR’s style of music was described as roots rock, swamp rock and blues rock, a
hybrid of early rock ‘n roll—a back-to-thebasics success with a subtle sound all their own. Although from the San Francisco Bay area, their huge hits, such as Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, Born on the Bayou, Green River, Fortunate Son, and Travelin’ Band, speak of bayous, catfish and the Mississippi River, as well as political and social issues, including the Vietnam War. To this day, CCR remains iconic within the music scene despite their relatively short time atop the charts. Continued on page 5...

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP
TRAFFIC Central Interior Traffic Services (CITS), based in Kamloops, BC, conducts periodic patrols and traffic enforcement initiatives in the Chase Detachment area. This is to enhance local traffic enforcement and promote safe roads in the Chase area. CITS has explored new ways to conduct traffic enforcement and found them to be very effective. Over the past month, CITS has modified their shifts to cover the early morning traffic and held covert call operations in the Chase and the Sorrento area. These operations resulted in significant enforcement action that might not have been possible during regular patrols.

OUT
EVERY WEEK
Well it has been a busy few weeks for the local District Fish and Game Club directors. Last weekend on June 8th and 9th was our Family Campout and Fishing Derby at the range. Directors were busy getting grounds ready for campers and buying door prizes and fishing prizes for fishing entries. Many thanks to Alison Lauzon for all the shopping for prizes and for looking after the delicious pork loin. Thanks to William Dalin for mowing all the property up there the week before and other volunteers who came up to weed eat and clean up. The range and club house are looking pretty awesome lately and it is nice to see that they are being well used. Un f o r t u n a t e l y, turnout for the derby Ralph Bischoff was lower numbers than expected. It wasn’t the best weekend for weather so fairweather campers and fishermen probably chose not to come out. My husband and myself found this Derby a great opportunity to learn something new about out local area. On the Thursday we went for a tour around using Google Maps to see if we could find the 4 lakes involved in the derby which were Phillips. Skimmiken, Millar and Fleming. We started our tour in Squilax, drove to the range and then around the whole area to all 4 lakes. We were able to find all 4 lakes and discovered we could travel from Miller in Paxton valley over the mountain down into Pritchard. We discovered that Phillips Lake is a beautiful lake and even though we grew up in this area we had never been there before. Miller also looks like a great lake to fish, but the road into the lake is pretty rutted out. Probably a good idea to just take a fishing dingy in rather than a trailer with an aluminum boat. Some of the ruts are pretty deep. We discovered Skimmiken Lake had
many campers there for the weekend in both camping spots. My husband and I decided to fish at Phillips Lake because we heard the fish were pretty nice there and boy were they correct. We were advised it is hard to catch fish there because they rainbow have so much to eat in that lake so the fish are pretty finicky. We were able to catch one over the 2 days but what beautiful looking fish it was. Everyone who caught one at Phillips Lake got a healthy silvery shiny fat rainbow with very red flesh! The lake isn’t very deep so once the water warms up they might not taste as awesome as they do right now. The weather wasn’t even that bad. We were chased off the lake a couple of times due to wind and rain but it blew over quickly and then we went right back out. It was too bad not a lot of fishermen came out. As usual the potluck dinner with BBQ’d pork and baked potatoes was amazing. Alison marinates it with a honey mustard glaze while it BBQ’s and it is delicious. Everyone who attended the derby and dinner had a great time. There were prizes for everyone. Vickey Bischoff won first place with a 3.1 lb fish. Rob Parkin won second place with over a 2 lb fish and William Dalin won 3rd place with a 1.1 lb fish. Ralph Bischoff went fishing the day before in Phillips Lake and caught over a 5 lb rainbow which he couldn’t count for the Derby!!. Good luck and bad luck all at the same time! Vickey actually caught a lot of fish because she and Ralph really know a lot about fishing!! And she had all the correct lures and flies for Phillips Lake. But Ralph is a great guy and was willing to share all his info with others which a lot of fishermen won’t do. We are definitely going to go back to Phillips to fish it again and to also try Miller Lake. Continued on next page...
Page 7 • June 21st, 2019 • Chase Sunflower Continued from prev page...
Fish and Game Club Update Rob Parkin had such a hard strike at Miller it broke his line – which tells us there must be some big fish in that lake! The directors will be taking some time off this summer until the fall. There will be no summer meetings in July or August. There will also be no Open House this year. It is a great deal of work so it has been decided that once every 2 years is enough.
We are always encouraging new members to come out and try our activities. Our club is full of really, nice outdoorsy people. If you are interested in fishing, hunting, trap or skeet shooting, trails and hiking, or just in protecting the environment for future generations this could be the group for you. We would love to see you come out to the next meeting.
