Opioid Agonist Therapy Clinic in Chase Submitted by Dr. Cornel Barnard
Most of you in our community have heard or read about the the escalating opioid crisis that Canada is struggling with. People are dying of drug overdoses at an alarming rate due to newer and stronger opioids flooding the illegal supply chain. We can no longer ignore the overdose epidemic, including reducing the stigma around drug use, to prevent further avoidable deaths. For years opioid use disorders have been stigmatized to be disease of low income and homeless people. This is completely untrue. People in all walks of life struggle with addictions, including teachers, lawyers, doctors, store owners, cashiers and even retirees. It could be a wealthy home owner or the renter of a small apartment. It could be the well dressed 40 year old hockey mom or the grandfather walking to the park everyday.
The physician group in Chase in partnership with the Interior Health Authority is working towards changing drug use perceptions and breaking down barriers to treatment, for people living with an opioid addiction by starting an Opioid Agonist Therapy Clinic (OAT) at the Chase Health Centre. People will see a nurse/ counsellor and a physician for assessment and treatment in a confidential, judgmentfree environment. Current treatment options are Methadone, as well as a new exciting treatment Suboxone. These medications have been proven to save lives. If you, a loved one, or someone you know is concerned or struggling with drug use, please contact the Chase Health Centre at 250-679-1390 and ask to speak with Hayley to book an appointment.

Chase Fire Rescue
Serves Up a Great Meal and a Good Time—Again! Submitted by Carolyn Parks Mintz
LobsterFest 2019 held in early June was a successful repeat of previous years—Chase Fire Rescue folk are really good at putting together a fun-filled evening that starts with a great meal. With over two hundred and sixty t i c k e t s sold, locals gathered at the Adams Lake First N a t i o n’s Recreational & Conference Centre to enjoy visits with friends, dinner and dancing. The lobsters, salads and desserts were delicious
and the musicians and singers of “Shattered Blue” rocked the night away after the meal. Lucky winners of door prizes, in raffles and from the Silent Auction went home with nifty stuff as well as treasures. And the icing on the cake has to be that the monies raised will go toward the purpose-built training centre planned for Chase. What’s not to love about a night like that? Many thanks CFR, its volunteers and all those who attended.

Notes from the Village of Chase - June 5, 2019
submitted by Village of Chase Utility Billing Cycles Council has given three readings to a bylaw that will change the billing cycle for utilities. Bills will still be sent out quarterly (every three months), however they won’t be coming out the same time as property taxes which we hope will be less onerous on property o w n e r s and will allow our office staff to focus primarily on helping property owners with their property tax payments in May and June. We will still have four season billing however the four quarters will coincide with the calendar year for water meter readings, such that water consumption will be determined from January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December. In 2019, the next billing cycle will be May 1 to July 31, the one after that will be August 1 to September 30 (2 months rather than 3 months), and the one after that will be from October 1 to December 31. Community Wildfire Protection Planning – Fire Smart The Village of Chase has partnered with the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band to develop a Wildfire Protection Plan for the Village of Chase and to engage the public in learning about how to mitigate fire risks in populated areas. The intent of the CWPP is to apply for Fire Smart status for the Village of Chase. The Village staff are working with staff at Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band
to organize public workshops for both the Village of Chase residents and residents of Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band to provide information and to recruit community champions for the Wildfire Protection education program. Stay tuned for further information as to when workshops will be held and what you can expect to learn at them. Local and Secwepemc Governments First Annual Meeting Did you know that the Village of Chase is a signatory to the Shuswap Local and Secwepemc Governments Communications Agreement? It was developed in 2017/2018 and the partners are Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Splatsin, Columbia Shuswap Regional District, Regional District of North Okanagan, City of Salmon Arm, City of Enderby, Village of Lumby, District of Sicamous and the Village of Chase. The intent of this agreement is to establish and maintain a long term, cooperative government to government relationship with the various communities across the Shuswap watershed portion of Secwepemc’ulecw (Shuswap region of BC). The first annual meeting of the Chiefs, Councils, Mayors, Chairs, Board Members and senior staff members is taking place June 6, 2019 in Salmon Arm. The purpose of this meeting is to reconnect, and to discuss possible partnerships for the region.

Poems and Prose: Writer's Corner VINES AND WORDS By Carolyn Parks Mintz (1971) Had I known I could have let my hurt escape to written verse throughout that vacuum time of gasping at your death, I could have done with much less talk of all we did and when and why to understanding friends who let me vent the grieving so I would not cry too long. Of course, tears at times do nothing for that too deep for common weeping. Two nearly quiet years have passed and now I’ve found release instead of keeping all that’s been withheld by tangled mangled vines Perhaps the purpose of your leaving was to help me write these lines.
