Pump Track News

As the weather warms up and people in Chase are dusting off their bikes, the Youth Action Committee is proud to spearhead the construction of a dirt pump track here in Chase. A Pump Track is a series of rollers and banked turns used primarily to help teach mountain bike techniques. The target age range for this track is between 6-16 years old but will be fun for all those who ride a bike.

Currently the nearest pump tracks are located in White Lake, Kamloops and Sun Peaks.

Youth Action is a committee of the Village of Chase that works to create active opportunities for youth in Chase and area.  This project was approved by the Village Council March 14th, 2023 and we expect to start construction in the coming weeks.

This fun, free, and healthy outdoor activity will be located on Village of Chase property behind the Art Holding

Arena on part of the land previously used by Tree Top Flyers. It will provide another option for youth to learn new skills and remain active in our Village.

Youth Action would like to thank our current partners in this project: Village of Chase, Tree Top Flyers, Team Equipment, Levi’s Lawn Care, Ken Carlin Trucking, Home Hardware, & Golden Ears Farm for their donations of resources to make this project a reality with minimal expense to our community. Together these partners are making life better for the youth of Chase.

PUMP TRACK

We anticipate that the build would take approximately two to three weekends to complete, as work is 100% volunteer.

But we need help. Because of the generosity of local business, we have been able to keep our construction budget Extremely low. Would you consider joining Youth Action to make this park

a reality? The Village office is accepting donations throughout normal office hours, any donation over $25 made at the Village office will receive a tax receipt.  There is also a GoFundMe page available through our Facebook page.

Thanks for your time, and we’re excited for a great season of activities in Chase.

Chase Pollinators Initiative

submitted by Ashton Sweetnam, Chase and Area Young Learners Association

Our Society is preparing to launch an exciting series of projects as a part of the Chase Pollinators Initiative. In support of our local wildlife and diverse ecosystems, we will be installing a series of pollinator gardens throughout the Village of Chase beginning in spring 2023.

We began this initiative in 2022 with the creation of a pollinator themed mural led by Joey Nash and with the help of the children attending our CAYLS Art Camp and a handful of community volunteers. This is a largely volunteer run project,

and donations of good quality tools, building materials, and time are welcome. We are looking for help from local gardeners with these pollinator gardens in the form of plant donations. As you begin your spring gardening please keep us in mind. We are looking for native plants, groundcovers, and of course- pollinator friendly plants.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

What Did You Do?

What did you do the day after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) told us it was their last warning to avoid total climate catastrophe as temperatures rise globally to 1.5 and possibly 2 degrees above normal in the next 7 years? How did you react when Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the UN said, “only swift and drastic action can avert irrevocable damage to the world.”

Did you throw up your arms and say there are just too many of us on the planet anyways? Did you think there was nothing one person could do, not even a few of you? Did you think that it’s all just another conspiracy theory or that the fossil fuel industries and governments have got our backs? Did you blame China, India, and Russia for not doing enough? Saudi Arabia for not turning off the taps? Did you think it was all too much for us to worry about? Did you get up and do exactly the same thing you did the day before?

Or, did you get busy and write a letter to the government demanding

Spring has arrived and the snow has disappeared!

Those of us who walk along VLA Road, particularly the west end where it follows the river, can now observe (and collect) the accumulated litter of the past few months.

So I am writing to just a few people (but maybe if you could pass the word along...).

First, there is the Green Poop Bag Person who tidily scoops up after their pet, but then leaves the bags by the side of the road.

Then there is the Rolled Gold Cigarette Smoker (I must have picked up at least half a dozen of

action; decide to join a climate action group; turned off your motor while you sat idling; walked or biked instead of drove, looked into a hybrid or electric vehicle, carpooled or finally decided to check out rapid transit? Did you finally realize that since you could afford it, it was time to change to alternative energy sources like a heat pump and solar panels? Did you decide that you can enjoy our part of the world without having to fly to get there? Did you take a good hard look at the kids you are responsible for and haven’t yet started their lives? Did you pledge to live slower, simpler and with gratitude? Did you realize that it really is about you, and that only you can really make a difference?

Each one of us doing something is really the only option for us now. We need to dig in, get mad and get it done. Now is the time, right here, right now to prove what you’re made of. “Our world needs climate action on all fronts; everything, everywhere, all at once.”

these cartons).

Some of the other Litterbugs are more difficult to identify as they leave an assortment of candy wrappers, empty containers, and bits of plastic.

On the positive side (I was always told, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”), there were no cigarette butts and no single-use face-masks!

And down by the river itself, there has been little garbage! It seems that those who make the effort to walk down in that area, also take the trouble to clean up after themselves and leave a clean environment for the locals--human and otherwise!

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: What’s the worst that could happen?

What is the worst that could happen? I remember saying this as a teenager to some friends as we headed out on a weekend cliff jumping adventure.

That sunny Saturday afternoon, I couldn’t have imagined anything going seriously wrong, because it almost never does. However, as our group crossed a band of rushing rapids I slipped. Had it not been for the quick action of a friend, I would have been swept down the rapids, with the likely outcome of being crushed by water and rock.

Thankfully, I emerged from the water without a mark, the only physical reminder of my experience was the scrapes incurred on my friend’s arm and legs from the rough rock surface as he held me against the rushing water. While it was close, the worst certainly didn’t happen that day.

Unfortunately, not all of our experiences result in minor scrapes and bruises.

Our contemporary culture has brought a level of physical safety and security that generations before could have never dreamed of: cars have seatbelts and airbags, bike helmets are common, railings and fall protection prevent falls that were common, better signage marks our roads and rail crossings.

But, life has a 100% mortality rate.

Many of us have experienced the overwhelming power of being submerged by roaring waves, whether

waves of water or the inner waves of grief.

And this is hard. These experiences can crush our soul. We may wonder how we can go on, how we can move against the rush of this current.

But the roaring water doesn’t have to be the end of the story. There is hope.

That day —fighting against the current of Tulabie falls — I had hope, because I knew my friend wouldn’t let go, I knew this wasn’t the end of the story. And we can have hope in midst of the relentless waves of life; because we can know this isn’t the end of our story, or the stories of our loved ones.

This hope is what followers of Jesus celebrate this week, that death is not the end.

One day when Jesus himself was full of grief, when he wept for his friend Lazarus who had died, he said these words: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25 NIV).

Things aren’t always easy. Sometimes the worst does happen. But this isn’t the end, this isn’t all that there is.

I would invite you to come and investigate this hope this Sunday at 10 AM — Chase Evangelical Free Church, 295 Shuswap Ave. More info @ ChaseChurch.com
