Local Elder Writes Kids Book submitted

Chief Atahm School invites you to a book launch introducing Secwepemc Elder Anne Michel’s children’s book, titled, “Tsetcwécwqs”, which means ‘house chicken’ in the Secwepemc language. We welcome everyone to this event that will be held on Thursday, October 26th from 4:00-6:30 pm at the Adams Lake gym across the bridge from Chase. This book is the first in a series of five children’s books featuring local Secwepemc Elders experiences from their childhood. It is a part of a fiveyear research project titled, “Restorying Language through Stories of Our Elders”. The community-based research produced a collection of oral stories from 5 Secwepemc Elders that were then adapted into children’s books, maps with placenames, a website, and a variety of classroom language curricula. This event provides the opportunity

for Chief Atahm School to showcase many other resources, including, books, videos, and maps that have developed over two decades. The school began in 1981 and was the first Aboriginal language immersion school in We s t e r n Canada. Chief Atahm School offers a Secwepemc language immersion education for babies under 3, as well as for children from nursery/ kindergarten to grade four. The school also has a grade five to nine program with Secwepemc teachings, as well as language classes open to the public. For more information visit www. chiefatahm.com

The Society will continue to be busy organizing and running orientations with classrooms to explain park etiquette, rules and the importance of safety equipment. An art project for the park is in the works, as well as site beautification and landscaping. Thank you to the Rotary for supplying food and drinks for the event.

Project Questions

In last weeks’ Letter to the Editor, A. East of Chase, voiced some valid concerns about the proposed water splash park being considered for Memorial Park. The letter submitted, and written, by Andrew Templeton explained the usage and maintenance of the park, yet did not answer the basic concerns voiced by A. East – that of who will pay for the water used, the insurance costs, and daily clean up. I have three concerns regarding this project: Who WILL be paying for the afore mentioned costs. Unless there is a company or business that has volunteered to pick up the tab that we are not aware of, then the folks that make up the tax base of the Village will, undoubtedly, foot the bill. If this facility is to be built, does it have to be in Memorial Park? We are so fortunate to have such a lovely park in our community to enjoy “Music in the Park”, long walks to cool off in the heat of the summer, enjoy “Corn Stock”, and just roam around on the grass getting the feel of the country side. I imagine the water park

will take up a considerable amount of that grass, and the area we sit in to watch various events. The idea that A. East mentioned of locating the park in the Lions Municipal RV Park seems like a good alternative. Lastly is the matter of Water Consumption. Is this a responsible use of our treated water? Without a doubt, the summer months will be the time when this park is used the most. During the past several years, summers have been extremely hot, and gardeners in the Village have had water restrictions imposed on them for such things as watering gardens and lawns. I ask again then ‘Is this park’s consumption of water, regardless of the efficiency of the equipment, really a good use of our treated water, treatment facility, and sewer system?’ I believe the Mayor & Village Council need to give these concerns much thought before allowing this project to proceed. Respectfully submitted...

NEWS FROM THE BOWLING ALLEY by Calyn Buresh

Alright readers! It has been a long couple of weeks with letting you all know what is going on here at Village Lanes! This week, the column is going to be all about giving credit where credit is due! We have had some outstanding bowling by some wonderful people, and so this week is all about them! Our Club 55 members ruled the lanes this past week. The high scores were plentiful! Archie McMillan threw a 242 game on Monday morning to start out the week! It only got better from there! A big congratulations to John Mosimann from our Tuesday afternoon league who rolled his first EVER 300 game! 300 on the nose! Congrats John! You are now part of a very elite club! Joan Daye from our Wednesday afternoon league wasn’t messing around last week when she threw a 237 game! Helen Beauchamp showed

the men how it was done on Thursday morning! She had strikes all over the place and ended up with a fantastic 226 single! Way to go Club 55ers! It’s always a blast watching you bowl so well! A couple of other big mentions this week are going out to a few of our YBC girls! Destiny Behrends bowled a 249 game and had 4 strikes in a row! Way to go Des! And Haylee Nakazawa had an outstanding week – like better than most of the adults! Haylee had a high game of a 228, and had a triple for the day of a 621 which works out to a 207 average! Good job Haylee! Don’t forget that Village Lanes is having a Halloween party on Friday October 27th! Starting at 9:30pm and running late! Local DJ’s, cheap bowling, full bar, and food! I passed a kid sat on the side of the road dressed in rags earlier. I asked him, “Are you an orphan?” He replied, “Yes. What gave me away?” I said, “Your parents.” • He’s a little sad, but only a little, for they barely knew each other. Then, a few days later, a package arrives. It contains his inheritance from the estate: A violin and a painting. He has no idea what to do with them. After pondering the matter, he takes them to an appraiser. Not too long later the appraiser calls him: “I’ve finished my analysis, and I’ve got some good news. There’s no doubt at all that what you have is a genuine Van Gogh and a genuine Stradivarius.” The man is ecstatic: “I can sell these for millions!” The appraiser says “Well, you can sell them, and they’ll fetch some money for their novelty value. But not millions. You see, the truth is, Stradivarius wasn’t much of a painter... and Van Gogh made lousy violins.” • Mathematics is 90% common sense... The other half is intelligence.

A man walks into a zoo, only to find that the zoo only has one animal. That animal is a dog. It’s a shih tzu. • Just because nobody complains doesn’t mean all parachutes are perfect.

CHASE HEAT:

REDEMPTION WEEKEND submitted by Scott Koch

The Ups and Downs of teenage angst make for interesting weekends in the Junior Hockey world. A week ago the Chase HEAT players were leaving a bad taste and a challenge to the fans olfactory glands. This past duo of leisure days discovered new found potential, an understanding of hard work and team play. It’s early but a possible corner has been turned in the fortunes of 23 hockey careers. At home in the confines of the Art Holding Memorial Arena the locals met up with the desperados from the Princeton POSSE. It was Friday the 13th and suspicions aplenty filled the air. The hot POSSE versus the less then hot HEAT in front of those who hadn’t jumped off the band wagon. Princeton popped in a powerplay marker late in the 1st, an audible grunt from the crowd was heard. In the 2nd smooth skating Pat Brady scored with the man advantage, assisted by Josh Bourne and Ryan Okino. Then the POSSE popped in a pair, prior to Chase doing the same. Zachary Fournier from Okino and Kolten Moore, followed by Moore from Brady and Fournier. The veterans had shown up for this one and it was notched at 3-3 after 40. In the 3rd the visitors retook the lead and then with 34 seconds left in the 3rd,Kaden Black on the man advantage from Brady and Okino got the faithful out of their seats. Off to overtime and the 1st overtime passed with it still 4-4. In the 2nd extra stanza

Fournier was the hero from Moore notching the game winner in a fast and skill filled evening of entertainment. The team the fans wanted to see had returned to it’s brand of thrills and chills shinny. So the next day found the team that headed off to Armstrong sitting on the side of the highway in a broken down bus, was their luck about to change? After an hour and a half wait for a replacement coach the trip to face the North Okanagan KNIGHTS continued. The hosts graciously delayed the game to an 8 pm start at NorVal Arena. The KNIGHTS crashed and bashed for the first half of this main event and the HEAT played rope a dope, not letting the mayhem effect their intended goal. In the 1st rookie Brayden Haskell got his first in the KIJHL from Bourne and Cory Loring. In the 2nd the KNIGHTS pulled even. Finally in the 3rd Cam Watson the stay at home defenceman blasted a slapper from the point, aided by Loring to seal the deal on a 2-1 regulation time win. The HEAT currently have 23 players on the roster, the latest is free agent Tyrell Bourk from Lethbridge Alberta. The next competition is a home game with the Kamloops STORM on Tuesday the 17th, followed by another AHMA encounter on Friday the 20th versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. The HEAT then head to Kamloops on the 25th for a Wednesday night game at Memorial Arena.
