BOOK REVIEW
729 Shuswap Ave Chase BC
by Annelise Grube-Cavers
The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera Sometimes it’s not just the book, but the context you read it in that has an impact on your life. Or it’s the reflections of your context that spring out from the book. Milan Kundera’s writing is stark and honest. In a second person narrative he tells intertwined stories of love, politics, commitment and betrayal in soviet-occupied Eastern Europe. The novel is full of sensuous scenes, but also stark coldness and
the quiet honest observations of those quietly oppressed by their positions in life, whether it is their work or their relationships. A book that is shocking, unnerving and beautiful, you can’t read it without a strong feeling. Whether it is intense gratitude for a work of literature, or intense dislike of a seemingly callous and unfeeling author will depend on both your taste in books and the context that you’re reading it in.

Finally, A book about the Shuswap! by Jim Cooperman
It was over ten years ago that I began writing this column with the goal of producing enough material for a book about the geography of the Shuswap. After I began to combine and add to the material for the book, it became apparent that three volumes would be needed in order to provide comprehensive coverage. When the first draft of the first volume of Everything Shuswap was completed over a year ago, a publishing plan was needed. As traditional publishers are no longer interested in regional publications, a local effort began to secure partners and funding. One of the greatest needs for the book is
Corn Fritters
for education, and when local high school teachers became aware of the manuscript they fully supported the proposed partnership with the school district, which then joined the project as the co-publisher. These teachers are now reviewing the draft to determine if any additional material or revision is needed. What makes this publishing project unique is that once all the funds are raised to design and print the approximately 300-page book, revenue from book sales will be used to support the outdoor learning initiative and help get students outdoors to study nature. The project will also become self-supporting, as half of the money from book sales will be used for further printings and to cover the publishing costs for the next volumes. Continued on page 8...

4 Way Woahs On July 7th the Village Council voted to remove the stop signs on Coburn Street and Okanagan Ave. Turning it from a 4 way to a 2 way stop, making it a straight shot to the highway. This a benefit to no-one expect the speeders who regularly use Coburn. They at least slow down for the stop sign, if not stop. Coburn is a main route for children going to school, adults going to the clinic or just walking for exercise. Too many motorists speed by pedestrians with no thought. Council lowered the speed limit on Aylmer Road to 30 km and added a stop sign. Coburn Street is a residential area with many small children and elderly people who used it daily. I ask you to please tell your Village council to reverse the Coburn Street decision. I attended the August 4/15 council meeting and voiced my concerns and sent a letter which will be read at the next meeting. I ask all of you to tell our councilors to reverse this decision. One accident will be too many. C.W. McKenzie
The Tent Caterpillar; Official Emblem I have noticed that our Village has seen fit to bedeck our Public Trees in decorative netting. I see you started out with small touches here and there but, you must have enjoyed rave reviews for your “efforts” because now, virtually every tree along Shuswap Avenue (the corridor along which Visitors enter and leave our Village) is completely enshrouded, as are a growing number in Willson Park and elsewhere. I suppose it makes sense to choose to embrace this decor as our “Official Welcome” to those visiting our area as it so exemplifies Village philosophy where problems exist. Crime, Drugs, Caterpillars – it all produces the same result. Ignore these problems and they escalate. It is way too easy to say “can’t enforce/ nothing can be done/ they’ll just move elsewhere/ doesn’t effect me/ it won’t kill them.” Of course something can be done and left unchecked, eventually, death will occur. As any gardener will tell you, it just takes a will to remove them and persistence. Lesson learned?! One can only hope. Joey Nash

How do I thank so many people for my magnificent 85th birthday party? COP people like Ernie Kotanko who was there to set up chair and tables, and Shirley Phillips making coffee and setting up a beautiful table for all the delicious goodies donated by my special friends. My good friend Diane, my swimming partner who donated an ice cream cake, helped me set up. My buddy Doug made sure the sound was just right. Jerry Turcott started the show at 3 pm, Keith Adams, Joyce, Denny Mcnaughton, Vern and Liz Cave the fender bender, Len Larson from Kamloops. Jan Kudelka, Peter Weel, Annie Moffett,

Book about the Shuswap would benefit all
Volume one of Everything Shuswap contains five chapters and a foreword by wellknown author, Alan Haig-Brown. Chapter one’s watershed tour describes social and geographical features for each of the sub-drainages, including recreational opportunities and little known details. An overview of the geological forces that shaped our region is in chapter two, which also includes histories of mining projects. Chapter three provides insight into the region’s ecology, including many wildlife species, limnology (lake ecology) and the roles of land use planning. The history of the Secwepemc people who have lived here for over 9,000 years is covered in chapter four and describes their egalitarian and peaceful culture that suffered greatly from exploitation and abuse. Chapter five provides the history of settlement up until World War One as well as some analysis of the factors behind settle-
ment. Most of the chapters contain “boxes” on key topics, including prominent people, the salmon runs, early lake transportation, and special features. There will be spectacular colour photos, fascinating historical photos, graphs, statistics, illustrations, and unique maps in the book. A complete index and glossary will assist students as well as all readers and eventually, the schools will benefit even more when they receive all the digital background material used for the book. be mandatory reading for anyone who lives in or visits the Shuswap.” Everyone will benefit from the publication, including local residents who will have a comprehensive and authoritative source of local information and thus will gain appreciation and respect for their home place. Local businesses will benefit as the book will spread the word about the wonders of the Shuswap and therefore help attract more visitors and new residents. As well, local governments will benefit, as they will have a book to promote the region and share with colleagues and visitors. We are now over halfway towards our goal of raising the $22,000 needed to publish the book, most of which is needed for the printing. The Columbia-Shuswap Regional District has joined the project as a partner and additional funding has either been pledged or received from many individuals and groups, including the Adams Lake Indian Band, the Salmar Community Association, the Shuswap Naturalists and the Fraser Basin Council. All contributors will have their names recognized in the book and will receive one or more signed copies. If you want to help, visit everythingshuswap.ca.
