Chase Library Opening: Limited Services
B
submitted by Andy Finnen, Chase Library
eginning mid-July to late July, we will begin opening our libraries offering limited services with strict health and safety measures in place. We will enable: • pick up of holds, • access to our physical collections in short visits, and • schedule limited time for patrons to use public computers To support our most vulnerable citizens, we will set aside unimpeded time for seniors. As we re-open we will permit short visits only to our spaces. Patrons will not be able to spend longer periods of time in the branch.
In-person programs for children, teens, and adults will remain suspended. To support re-opening we are rearranging our spaces to ensure social distancing practices, expanding our cleaning protocols, training everyone, and doing all that we can to make the TNRL as safe and convenient as possible. As we get closer to our target re-opening dates in mid-July, information will be posted on our website and communicated through all channels available to us. Please call the library if you have any questions, 250.679.3331

Cops for Kids Ride - Dedicated Cops Pedal On!
Like many other organizations, Cops for Kids is facing the reality that large group fundraising events aren’t allowed under social distancing restrictions; but this group of dedicated cops aren’t willing to throw in the towel because the need for funds still exists. The charitable organization will not have their usual 30 member team pedaling across the region this September, instead opting to designate a few local riders to complete each leg of the 10 days on behalf of the team. The remainder of the team will continue to pedal 100km each day in their home community as a promise to the children who need them most. For parents with a child facing illness, disability, or traumatic crisis they don’t have the option to cancel or give up, and the dedicated group of cops are much the same. Under the new format for the 20th Anniversary, the 30 law enforcement officials will still train on their own time all summer, along with meeting their commitment to fundraise a minimum of $2,500 and provide their own equipment in order to be a part of the team. While these heroes are disheartened that they won’t be cycling across the region with their peers this September, they’ll each get the opportunity to ride 1 day from September 11-20 on the designated route as a representative for the
organization. Local supporters will be asked to stand safely at a distance to offer their support in the form of waves and cheers as the small group passes through. Dates and times will be made available. As a new fundraising initiative, they’re also opening up the opportunity to train like a Cops for Kids rider by offering a virtual ride to cycling enthusiasts who may want to challenge themselves while also raising funds for the children in crisis in our region. The Cops for Kids Virtual Ride for the Life of a Child invites cyclists of all abilities to register to complete either 50km, 100km, or even a hardcore 1,000km from home on their own time from now until September. Riders who complete their cycling goal, and raise a minimum of $500 will receive a 20th Anniversary Cops for Kids jersey to say thank you. These virtual riders will help the organization replace funds that are desperately needed by families who must travel to receive medical care outside their home community, require medical supplies, emergency dental treatment, specialized therapies, learning tools & mobility aids. To register for the Virtual Ride for the Life of a Child, or to make a donation to one of the riders please visit www.copsforkids.org

RCMP REPORT submitted by Sgt Barry Kennedy, Chase RCMP
Break and Enter Interrupted On July 1st, 2020 at 1:28 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a break and enter in progress at a seasonal residence in the 6000 block of Squilax Anglemont Road in Magna Bay. The home owners arrived from out of town and discovered a white F150 with two people in it, parked near their house. A third person ran out of their house and jumped in the truck, which sped away. Police intercepted the vehicle in the Lee Creek area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled from police at a high rate of speed. Nothing was missing from the house, but the door was damaged in the break-in. The matter is still under investigation. Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact the Chase RCMP Detachment at 250-679-3221. Roll-over Collision On July 1st, 2020 at 2:48 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle rollover near the 18 km marker of Seymour Arm Main Forest Service Road. The driver, a 64 year old male from Valemount, likely fell asleep before losing control of his Ford Windstar, which rolled completely over and came to rest on its tires. The driver was ok, the Ford Windstar was totalled. Impaired Driver On July 2nd, 2020 at 9:04 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle collision in the 2000 block of Squilax Anglemont Road in Lee Creek. The complainant reported that he witnessed grey Mazda car go into the ditch. A female got out of the vehicle and ran down the highway then vomited and continued running. Police were in the area, actively looking for this vehicle because it had been called in for erratic driving behaviour approximately 15 minutes earlier. Police located the driver, a 19 year old female from Salmon Arm, near the vehicle. She admitted to having consumed “a couple drinks” with dinner. There was a noticeable odour of liquor on her breath. Breath samples were taken roadside, which determined the driver to be impaired by alcohol. She was issued a 90 day prohibition from driving and her damaged vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Luckily neither the driver, nor anyone else, was injured in this collision.
Transport Trucks Rear-ender On Juy 3rd, 2020 at 1:49 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a collision between two transport trucks on the Trans Canada Highway at Buckley Road, just West of Sorrento. One transport had rear-ended the other transport truck, causing a fire in the engine bay of the second truck. The driver of the first truck, was following another vehicle which had braked suddenly to make a left hand turn, off the highway. The first transport truck was following at a safe distance and managed to stop behind the vehicle. The driver of the second transport truck, was was unable to stop in time. No one was seriously injured in the collision however, the highway was closed for hours. The driver of the second transport truck was issued a violation ticket for following too closely. California Plates On July 4th, 2020 at 12:01 pm Chase RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of an American vehicle on Deodar Road in Scotch Creek. The complainant said that a red Buick with California license plates had been parked at a residence for a few days. Police located the vehicle and spoke to the owner, who had come to Canada in March. He had not broken any travel restrictions and is just at his vacation property. Continued on page 7...
