Bowling; Nerdy but FUN!
BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers
by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes
The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna
This book wanders, like it’s displaced characters, from endearing sentimental moments to impressively technical language and facts. Forna describes the after effects of war, the state of an entire population suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. While the atrocities the characters survived are completely believable, the twists and turns of events that tie the story together are not. Coincidences sometimes seem like an easy out for an author looking to create a neat package. A way of taking contrasting situations and drawing them so close that they touch or end up inter twined. I wish that I could have gotten lost in the language and imagery of this beautifully composed story, but my disbelief got in the way. Still a good read with important homage paid to survivors of all kinds and the strategies that let them persist, I would recommend this book, but wouldn’t bolster expectations.
Well, the first week of leagues have come to a close at Village Lanes! A big thanks to all of our awesome bowlers who made the first week such a breeze! In adult league news, a Happy Birthday Shout Out being sent to one of our newest bowlers, Derek Vigue! Derek threw the men’s high single of the week with a 305! Bill Pacholok, a new Chase bowler, but a long-time friend, threw the high triple of the week with a 756, welcome to Chase, Billy! The ladies weren’t quite up to the men’s caliber this week (we’ll get you guys next week!) but a big congrats going out to Barb Lawrance for throwing the ladies high game with a 291! Way to show us gals how it’s done Barb. I’m coming for you next week. In the Club 55+ world, Jim Dunn had a massive first week! Throwing a 300 game, and totaling a 772! Charmaine Mierau proved to be one of the best, averaging a whopping 245. Now to maintain it Char! Not a problem, right!? And finally, YOUTH NEWS! Youth

Leagues have started up, and my right hand gal (and this year’s Youth Coordinator), Ali Maki, is urging parents to get your kids into a bowling league! MY NOTE TO ALL KIDS: Yes, bowling is considered a “geeky” sport, or at least it was when I was a kid….but that’s the new thing, right? Hipster, nerdy? Just do it. I promise you, it’s nowhere near as lame as everyone makes it sound. You will make friends from across the province, and maybe even across the country. Grab your 3 BFF’s, come up with a killer team name, and join. Simple as that! That’s all the Pin Chatter I’ve got for this week! Until next time! Calyn, OUT!

PROPOSED WATER/ SEWER UTILITY RATES - VILLAGE OF CHASE
Dear Diary Day
This week’s theme comes from a hilarious list of holidays made up by American actor Thomas Roy. The list was published in Chase’s Calendar of Events, and I am going to make good use of them in this Word Search section because they are hilarious, such as “Crackers Over The Keyboard Day” or “Take Your Webmaster to Lunch Day”. Unfortunately we just missed, “Wonderful Weirdos Day” on September 9th, but there’s always next year! Dear Diary Day is Sept 16; when is the last time you expressed yourself in a journal?

Many thanks for the fantastic response to our request for feedback on the proposed water / sewer utility rates! A second test billing will be coming out in the next few weeks reflecting the usage from April to August. This is a reminder that these are only proposed rates at this time and Council have not committed to them. Please feel free to continue providing feedback as this will be reported back to Council prior to any decisions being made.

PROPOSED NEW CONCEPT FOR FARMERS MARKET
Thinking about my old home town of Saskatoon, I remembered how the Farmer’s Market was set up there and wondered if perhaps a similar set-up could be incorporated in Chase. There is a truly impressive Farmer’s Market at the Centre of the massive River Landing Development. An abandoned building near the City Centre was acquired by City Council, renovated and an indoor/outdoor combination Farmer’s Market was created. The market is open on Saturday from 10-4 and on Wednesday evening from 5-9. The building has stalls, cafes and eateries inside and stalls on the outside as well, obviously the outside part is only open in the summers. But the inside is a year round market and is very well attended and popular in the city. Now granted, Saskatoon’s population is north of 350,000 and Chase is only 2,500 but the concept can still work. I propose the Village; or the Village in combination with some savvy investors in the public purchase
the old Loft Restaurant building and turn this into an outdoor/indoor Farmer’s Market centre in the same vein as The City of Bridges. The indoor part could be year-round and draw tourists and people from the surrounding area alike. The outdoor part could operate only in the summer or maybe even longer consider Chase’s much milder climate. This would be an exciting change and development for Chase and would strengthen our economy significantly. More tourists and people from the area around would be drawn to the interesting shopping opportunity the market would create. Niche eateries, specialty craft developers and aspiring Artists would get an opportunity to showcase their talents all year round. This would remove the vacant, abandoned look of a major building in Chase, when such buildings are unused and constantly for sale or lease it makes a town’s economy look very weak. Ryan Foster
Churchill’s Corner by Wally Churchill
Thank you Mr. Hermann for your letter and thank you to the Sunflower for letting me speak my mind. Why would I take on Imperial Metals, big corporations fracking up my beautiful Canada, Mr. Harper bless his heart, who would sell our resources to the highest bidder?? Especially when I could be fishing, dancing or in an old folks home getting my toenails cut for me?
Because I can. That’s why they spell it CAN A DA. If people were barred from advocating for change while participating in the systems they want to be different, where would we be today? People have always used one system (or energy source) while transitioning to the next. The following is a quote from historian Naomi Oreskes regarding the “but we all use oil
products” argument we hear often: “Of course we do, and people in the North wore clothes made of cotton picked by slaves. But that did not make them hypocrites when they joined the abolition movement. It just meant that they were also part of the slave economy, and they knew it. That is why they acted to change the system, not just their clothes.”

Food Drive in Chase aims to collect 5000 lbs The Chase Rotary Club and the Chase Hamper Society have joined together for the second Annual Fall Food Drive to benefit families in Chase and the surrounding areas. This event is planned to coincide with the Fall Food Drive held by 5 Kamloops Rotary Clubs and the Kamloops Food Bank. Our goal is to raise 5,000 pounds of food in Chase or two pounds of food for every Chase resident. The Chase Hamper Society provides Emergency Food Hampers throughout the year as well as Christmas Food Hampers. To date, 176 emergency hampers have been provided to clients. In 2014, 273 emergency hampers were provided to families, a total of 796 people, 288 which were children. The Fall Food Drive is planned for Saturday, September 19th from 9-12noon. All food donated
in Chase will stay in Chase! Yellow Rotary Food bags were distributed in the September 11th edition of the Shuswap Market News. Place your yellow donation bag on your front steps and a Chase Rotarian will pick it up between 9-12noon. For those living out of the Chase community, your donation can be dropped off at Safety Mart Foods or People’s Food and Drugs in Chase. Chase Rotary would like to thank the Chase Hamper Society, Chase Chamber of Commerce, Shuswap Market News, Kamloops Rotary Clubs, Kamloops Food Bank, NL Radio, Village of Chase, Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Little Shuswap Indian Band, Safety Mart Foods, People’s Food and Drugs and the citizens of Chase for all the support in helping us help others!
