Small Town Stories Showcased

The small towns of BC often are associated with the stereotype of being dull and boring. However, contrary to this negative and incorrect assumption are towns full of diverse and enthusiastic leaders who help build local community spirit and well-being. Chase is a close-knit community full of a diversity of people who are all working together to make the area a healthy and caring place to raise a family and lead a socially connected and meaningful life.

Sept. 25, 2015

To celebrate the range of successful people who have chosen to live and contribute to the vibrancy of Chase, a booklet called “Chase by Choice” has been published and is now available for free in print and online throughout the community. This booklet showcases 12 individuals who are making a positive contribution locally. Their stories showcase the area’s beautiful landscape, the local Secwepemc culture, and its small-town friendly nature. Cont’d on page 5...

FATHER LE JEUNE By Dick Hermann, Chase Museum

Did you know that the old church building that now houses the Chase Museum was designed and built by Father Le Jeune? Well, neither did I, until I did some digging in some old documents in the Museum. Father Le Jeune arrived in Kamloops in 1880, having made his way there from New Westminster, where he had arrived the previous year by ship from his home country of France. In those days to get to from New Westminster to Kamloops he would have travelled by paddle wheel steamer to Yale and from there made the rest of the journey on horseback or on foot. Father Le Jeune worked for many years in the Kamloops area as a missionary priest to the Indian bands in Kamloops and the surrounding area. The area that he covered required him to travel a circuit of some six hundred miles, which he travelled by canoe, on horseback, or on foot. After 1891, when Father Le Jeune became the rector of St. Joseph’s Church on the Kamloops Reserve, the extent of his travel was reduced significantly. In 1892 Father Le Jeune became the Superior of the St. Louis Mission. He remained in Kamloops until he was transferred to New Westminster in 1929, where he passed away in 1930. During the early years of his work in Kamloops, Father Le Jeune developed a simple, standard design for a church building, in accordance with which churches were built in several villages in the area. In the building of these churches it was normal for Father Le Jeune to pitch in and work along with the men doing the building. The Chase museum building is one of such church buildings that still survives, just across the road its original location.

My wife’s family has a connection of a unique sort with the Le Jeune name. Mary’s maternal grandfather, Thomas Costley, arrived in Kamloops on foot from Vancouver about the same time as Father Le Jeune. Tom Costley built a livery stable in downtown Kamloops from which he supplied horses for the local population. During the First World War he shipped horses to France to help supply the requirements of the war effort. The livery stable was later purchased by the CPR for the site of their Kamloops station, and it is now the site of the Keg Restaurant in Kamloops. In the 1920’s, when the demand for horses was being displaced by the automobile, Tom Costley purchased, from Mrs. Cowan, what was then known as Rainbow Lodge on Fish Lake. His family had camped there for many years during the summers, to get away from the oppressive heat in Kamloops. The weather at the lake is cooler because it is about 3,000 feet higher in elevation than Kamloops. Father Le Jeune is remembered, in part, by the fact that in the 1930’s Fish Lake was renamed Lac Le Jeune in recognition of his contribution to the development of the area. Tom Costley went on to develop the lodge at Lac Le Jeune, which was run first by one of his daughters, Doris Costley, and later by one of his granddaughters, Muriel Whitaker, before being sold to a third party. My wife and her siblings and all of their descendants spent their summers for many years in the relative coolness at “the Lake”, and today the sixth generation of Tom Costley’s family continues to enjoy the summers at Lac Le Jeune.

Chase by Choice Booklet

The stories all helping break down negative stereotypes of rural communities. The Chase by Choice booklet is a positive small-town volunteer initiative by Natalya Melnychuk. After a 25 day journey down the Fraser River from Mt. Robson to Vancouver with the Sustainable Living Leadership Program in August 2014, Natalya was inspired to create this booklet for Chase. She believes that the positive promotion of small communities is necessary to change

the negative stereotype of rural BC and to build community. She hopes that this book will not only inspire others to continue caring passionately about their communities, but will also provide young people with a widerange of role models they can look up to in the community. Limited copies of the booklet are available at the Chase Museum, the Visitor Info Centre, the Village Office, and G-Force. The booklet can also be viewed online through www. chasebc.ca.

Chase Rotary and the Hamper Society partnered again to collect food donated by Chase and District residents on Saturday September 19th. At last count, we were nearing the 5000 pound level and are confident we will meet or surpass that goal!. Even though the weather was wet, our volunteers canvassed your neighbourhoods and picked up your “Bags of Help” to fill the shelves of the Hamper Society. Matter of fact, just last week, the Hamper Society filled 19 emergency hampers for families in need. Immediately following the Rotary Food Drive, the Hamper volunteers check

the expiry dates on each and every item and sometimes, need to discard food items to make sure all hampers are safe for your consumption. If you were missed or want to give to the Rotary Food Drive, both Safety Mart and Peoples Food and Drug stores have collection boxes near their exit doors. The three First Nation Band offices are collecting their member donations and next week a Rotarian will pick up their contributions to this worthy cause. Remember, all the food collected in the Chase and District stays in Chase! Thank you all for a job well done!

Fellow Canucks, the big election day is approaching, Monday October 19th. You can visit www.elections.ca for more information on registration and voting. It’s an important election, so make sure you have your voice be heard. And my First Nations people, you now have the right to vote. I remember when you couldn’t. We are all Canadians and should be proud and

stand tall against anyone taking away our freedom. People of all colours and creeds have fought for our freedom. Let all of us defend that freedom. Here are a couple quotes about voting. “Just because you do not an interest in politics, doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you” - Pericles “Politicians are like diapers. They both need changing regularly and for the same reason” - Mark Twain
