Visitor Profiles: Hostel Hopping by Blair Acton

Mark and Margaret, from England, are hosteling across western Canada. Margaret has retired from teaching but has gone back to school for fibre arts. Mark has been hosteling since he was 13 when hostels used to have age limits (under 25), chores and curfews. Hostelling has changed quite a bit over the years. No more chores or curfews and it is open to all ages. Many hostels now have private rooms for couples or family rooms. Dorms are usually smaller from 4 to 6 people. What makes a difference from hotels, is the common rooms

to meet other travellers. Most hostels have kitchens so guests can share meals together. Local resident, Donna Spear, use to run the Castle Mountain hostel in the Rockies. She ran it with her mother Flo, for 25 years. Donna hand split the cedar shakes for the roof. The rockies have quite a few hostels that vary from the posh Lake Louise to the rustic wilderness hostels like Castle Mountain or Whiskey Jack in Yoho National Park. For more information about hosteling, you can go to www.hihostel.ca

Letters to the Editor Aylmer Road Traffic

Opinions and letters published in the Chase Sunflower are not necessarily the views of the Editor/Publisher, or anyone except the opinion holder. The Sunflower reserves the right to edit or omit copy. Letters must be sent with a name, address and contact phone number. Must be legibly written! info@chasesunflower.ca • Box 524, Chase BC, V0E 1M0

Recently a letter was written to council outlining complaints and breach of bylaws in the Industrial area. I am also a firm believer in the facts, and that they should clearly represent the truth of any given situation. First of all there have never been 30 vehicle out front, as there is not even enough space. Secondly, the vehicles are constantly revolving, as they move into the back, new appear. This is a never ending series of turn overs. As happens with any auto wrecking business anywhere. It is not the same vehicles continuously sitting in front of Garrick Automotive, like they are at other businesses along Aylmer Rd.. Many are customers vehiles in for repair. Yes, people get injured in crashes, and yes some die, those are the facts of life, as graphic as that is, whether you see the vehicle live on Aylmer Road or watch it on television, life is filled with horrific images. The writer of the letter to counsel can simply alleviate both of her written concerns

but taking 3rd Street to Pine Street and not driving Aylmer Rd at all. Why complain when it is your choice where you drive, no one forces you to use Aylmer Rd. The most important thing the public needs to be reminded of, is that Aylmer Road IS the Industrial area. If you are not doing business on this road then you have an alternate option of taking 3rd street over to Pine Street and not use this road. The speed zone of 30 km/hr was a collaborative effort through meetings with council and the businesses located on Aylmer Rd to achieve a safe environment for those businesses on Aylmer moving large machinery plus the multitude of children that use that route to get to school, as Aylmer Rd has no sidewalks for them to safely use. The speed limit is for the safety of everyone, as it has become a never ending drag strip of speeders. What we should be complaining about is the lack of law enforcement of these speed zones. Churchill’s Corner by Wally Churchill

A Huggy Excursion Lots of not so good things happening in Chase. I’m looking on the sunny side- went swimming in the lake, met many happy people with their dogs, went to the Chase farmers’ market, sang an Italian song for one lady, a Spanish song for another, sung a song called “honey” for the honey lady. Bought the last box of raspberries and shared them with my friend Michelle. Sang and danced with a couple of ladies, got 23 hugs at last count. I guess that’s my job and I am loving it. Water Woahs I am concerned locally we can have problems with drinking water, right here in BC if we allow mining companies to let tailing ponds leak into our lakes and rivers. We cannot put

our heads in the sand any longer, we must think of young people, we will be gone and they will have to worry. This is not a political thing, although we must put politicians on the spot. I don’t want to hear about the jobs. That’s the line they use to get whatever they want. Water is the issue, not jobs. Look at Alberta tar sands, lots of high paying jobs, now they’re out of work. In this wonderful place I call my home in Chase BC, we have lakes and rivers and we take them for granted. When they mess with my water, they are walking on the fighting side of me. Wally “Wallbanger” Churchill is a resident of Chase known for his singing. He keeps a daily journal, which will be excerpted here for your enjoyment and/or consternation.

OBITUARY

LANPHEAR, Phyllis Kathleen

On Sunday July 12, 2015 Mrs. Phyllis Kathleen Lanphear of Chase passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in Abbotsford. Phyllis was born on Sept. 22, 1919 in Moose Jaw Sask. She was predeceased by Vic, her loving husband of 64 years, in January 2007. She is survived by her son Keith (Pat) of Abbotsford; daughters Sharon (Rod) Johnston of Kelowna and Cindy Lanphear of Coquitlam, 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, Dave (Wendy) (Matthew & Megan) Lanphear, Lisa (Brad) (Riley & Jaxson) Klatt, Susan (Stu) (Parker & Maggie) McMurchy, Alex (Amanda) (Addison, Kelsey & Cade) Johnston, Amy (Kevin) (Abbey & Mackenzie) Stobo and many nieces and nephews. Phyllis met Vic during the war and they

were married in Sept 1942. They travelled around the province a bit as Vic worked for the CPR. They moved to Chase in March 1951 where they raised their family. Phyllis worked in various jobs including a correspondent for the Kamloops Daily News, a receptionist in the doctor’s office and a clerk with Chase Drugs. Phyllis was very active in the Anglican Church and with the Royal Canadian Legion. She and Vic received the “Citizen of the Year” award in 1999 for their many years as Mr. and Mrs. Claus at school and community events. She had an infectious sense of humour and will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. A celebration of life will be held in Chase at a later date.

OBITUARY

POZZOBON, Jay “Mackie”

The final ride is over for the “Old Cowboy”. Jay “Mackie” Massimo Pozzobon of Chase, B.C. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 20th, 2015 halfway through his 90th year. Born December 17th, 1925, the eldest son of Samuel and Assunta Pozzobon. Survived by his wife Rita, of 61 years, his six daughters; Aleta (Ben) Steinbach, Karen Prescott, Sharen (Bill) Trouton, Jan (Dale) Mortimer, Velda (Jerry) Prescott, Zena (Randy) Branson; 15 grandchildren, 17 Great-grandchildren, brother; Freedy (Jean) Pozzobon and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. Pre-deceased by his parents; Samuel and Assunta Pozzobon; sister Maria McNary; brothers Sammy and Marino Pozzobon; grandson Jaye Prescott and son-in-law Jim Prescott, Jr. Mackie grew up near Pinantan ranching and farming, breaking horses and raising cattle with his family. He later said that chasing cows was one of his favourite memories. He and his brothers rode to school on horseback and Mackie was on his own at age 12. We used to hear wild stories about the brothers, but not sure which ones we should have believed. Riding their horses into the beer parlours, knock-out boxing matches, bees & snakes around the school house, putting a calf in Harvey Heathfield’s office, riding the conveyor at Overwaitea, being bitten by a snake and the snake died or coming to terms with who was really responsible for getting caught on the bridge with a full load. What we do know is they were all tough, no-nonsense guys with a penchant for mischief and fun. Throughout his life Mackie was truly a jack of all trades; rancher, farmer, bull-rider, logger, scaler, sawyer, builder, contractor, welder, miner, driller, beekeeper, blaster, dowser, and pilot, just to list a few, but he never did learn how to swim. Many of them were done simultaneously. His independent life started when he left school in grade 6 and looked after the herd of cattle in Pinantan. He then started logging and building sawmills. He married Rita Zinck in 1953 and raised his family in Chase where he farmed, owned and operated equipment and then started the first readi-mix concrete company in the area. In addition to pouring cement, he designed and built septic tanks. At the same time, he started his horizontal drilling business, built homes and later moved into the mining business.

He was a self-made man and a true entrepreneur. Throughout this busy time, he was an active father and grandfather who took pride in the accomplishments of his daughters and grandchildren. Mackie always owned a favourite horse or 17 and loved to Chariott race. He continued to ride well into his 80’s when visiting in Alberta. Mackie tried everything he wanted to try and travelled everywhere he wanted to go (Europe, Barbados, Canada and the USA). He was the Chairman of the Chase Waterboard where major projects included upgrading the fire protection services, and constructing the water reservoir, pump house and intake. He was a strong supporter of the community where he was the 1st member of the Chase Branch Elks club, Trustee on the School Board, Founding member of Fish & Game, Rod & Gun Club, Founding member of Silver Spur Riding Club, Member of Chase Lions Club, Member of Chase Fall Fair, Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion and Founding Supporter and member of the Chase Curling Club. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, making salami and wine. In 1979, Mackie and Rita moved to the Shuswap Lake where he tried to retire. Mackie was curious about things; a voracious reader and a successful inventor which he continued to do until late in 2010. He possessed a quick wit and a great sense of humour. Let’s face it, he loved a good joke or story, teased relentlessly and laughed loudly. He was loved by his family, and loved them all in return. Mackie had a life well lived! Forever in our hearts! We thank the staff and care givers at Ponderosa and Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre for their care and attention. Funeral liturgy will be held on Monday, July 27th, 2015 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Chase, B.C. at 2:00 p.m. with Father Fred Weisbeck officiating. A celebration of life to follow at 444 VLA (Veteran) Road, Chase, B.C. Condolences may be sent through Schoening Funeral Services at www.schoeningfuneralservice. com. Local A&W Fundraises for MS Society by Lisa Kenny

A&W started fundraising for the MS society in August 2008 and since embarking on this fundraising journey all A&W’s across Canada have raised a total of 6.5 million dollars towards this great cause!!! Last year in Chase we raised 5476.00 dollars and I am very proud to say that we raised the most money in the Kamloops region. As well as only being a little less than $3000 behind the top store in BC. That is very impressive I would say. It is this great community and the people that made it possible and I would like to start out by thanking each and every single person for the amazing support we received last year. In saying that we are about to embark on Cruising to End MS 2015 and I have big plans in mind. First of all I would like to put out an open invitation to all Chase residence to join us on Sunday August 2 @ 5pm at our event “ Raise your Voices to End MS”. The event will take place at the Memorial Park band shell., I have invited local performers from Kamloops and would like to extend the invitation to all of our local

talent here in Chase. Whether it is singing or dancing or maybe you think you are funny we would love for you to come out and show us your talents and help us to raise some money for this cause. Along with the entertainment will be also be doing a hot dog and can of root beer by dotation. We will have a 50/50 draw, prizes and give a ways, there will be face painting for the kids as well as a root beer chugging contest!!! I am sure that we will have an amazing day at the beach, enjoy some great local talent and raise an incredible amount of money!! Come on out bring your lawn chair and your talents and lets do this Chase!!! The event goes from 5pm-9pm. To top off our MS 2015 fundraiser we will be giving $1 from every teen burger sold across Canada on August 27th , this is our Cruising to End MS Day and I am so excited about this! So I once again open up this invitation to all of our great residence to join us and help to END MS!! Lets reach our goal of $10,000!!!
