TEN questions With....

Cavelle Layes is up this week as we question our way through the members of the Chase Volunteer Fire Department. Q • Where are you from and how’d you end up in Chase? A • I am from Nova Scotia, but moved to Alberta when I was 18. I hated how industrialized it was and missed the water and mountains so Chase was perfect . Q • How did you get involved with the fire department and how long has it been now? A • I have a number of family members who were firefighters, and I seen what a great group was at the Chase department from my work in journalism. I finally decided to try it out and loved it. I’ve been with the department for over a year now. Q • Where can you usually be found? A • Over the next few months I will most likely be in the hockey arena, like most hockey moms. Q • What’s your favourite thing about being on the fire department? A • How much I can learn, not only from our training but the other members. We have such a diverse group.

Q • What have you learned? A • So much, from a more technical stand point, to even the importance of relying on each other as a team. Q • Can you share a quote that you like? A • “The secret to change is to focus on all your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new” Q • Is there anything you wish Chase has that it currently doesn’t? A • I wish we utilized the bandshell more, and brought in more musical entertainment. Q • Fill in the blanks: I’d like to send a shout out to ______ beacuse ___. A • Dominick because he’s about to have his 8th birthday! Q • What’s the best thing you did this summer? A • It’s hard to choose between watch the Jays play in Seattle with my boyfriend, or flying an plane on my own. It’s been an exciting summer!

NEW PROPOSAL FOR SEWER CHARGES

We have received the new proposal for water and sewer charges for the Residential Homes in Chase. I am sure we all realize the Smart Meter System for water consumption is going to happen. BUT having lived in another town where the system of charging Sewer is based on the usage of water consumption is totally unrealistic and unfair to us, the consumers in Chase. They state there is no other way to charge us...this is not correct and has been done by other towns. There is a variety of method’s to do this fairly to us a couple of methods are: #1 – Just a flat fee based on nothing OR #2 – Take water consumption

for the premises for say three periods in winter months, divide by 3 and that is the sewage charge for the upcoming year. I am sure we will not take any more showers and toilet flushing in winter versus summer and we will not be watering lawns in the winter. The previous town we lived in had a lot of brown lawns because it was a charge of double dipping... water usage charge equal sewer usage and our utilities bills were very high. What we put on lawns does not go down the sewers... we all know that. The notice has stated please put your concerns to council before Sept 18th, please do this, either by mail or e-mail. BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers

Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb

This book is one that leaves an imprint on the readers emotional body. The strength of the narrators resolve, and the force of the political and racial world that she lives within is unforgettable. More than all of that is a human story in all its dynamism. Feelings of melancholy, love and nostalgia that will make you miss

a place you’ve never been. This story is of migration and emigration and the relationships that allow people to persist through challenging circumstances.

Life’s a beach during a Shuswap summer by Jim Cooperman

The T-shirt motto, “Life’s a Beach” certainly applies to a Shuswap summer, when residents and tourists alike flock to the shores of Shuswap Lake to enjoy the sun, the water and the scenery. But since not all beaches are created equal, there are some that are definitely better than others. There are certain criteria that can be used to rank Shuswap and Mara Lake shorelines for summertime pleasures. Key factors for ranking the beaches include: sand, access, cleanliness and temperature of water, depth of water, safe swimming, nearby hiking trails, shade availability, lack of weeds and peacefulness. Since the vast majority of the lakes’ shorelines are either steep or rocky, the ideal beaches are rather few and far between. Most of the Shuswap’s sandy beaches, where children love to play and adults love to relax, are located on or near the fans of creeks and rivers. But sand alone does not make for a great beach. The Sicamous beach has marvellous sand, but most of the small swimming area is very shallow and the scenery is hardly pristine. And there is a wonderful sandy beach at the end of Anstey

Arm, but you need a boat to get there. Using the criteria above, here is what I think are Shuswap and Mara Lakes’ top five beaches in no particular order: Silver Beach in Seymour Arm, Mara Lake Provincial Park, the Adams River mouth beach at Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park, Ross Creek CSRD Park, and Little Shuswap Lake at Chase. Silver Beach has the best sand, great views and very clean water, but the access is difficult with and hour and half of gravel logging road. Adams River has fabulous sand, a spectacular view and huge cottonwoods for shade; however the mosquitoes can be pesky until August. There are some rocks in the sand at Ross Creek, but the distant view of Copper Island is glorious and the sun lasts until very late. Mara Lake and Chase have all the right attributes, although most of the swimming area is very shallow in Chase. For the second tier of high valued Shuswap beaches it is necessary to drop the requirement for sand. The next five top beaches in no particular order are: Albas Provincial Park, Herald Provincial Park,

Canoe, Shuswap Lake Provincial Park, and Sicamous. Albas is picturesque with a rounded pebble beach and there is a great hiking trail past numerous waterfalls, but the drive on the logging road is tedious. The lawn, views and proximity to town helps make Canoe enjoyable, despite the muddy bottom and cloudy water. The trees, lawn and nearby falls and trails make Herald Park a very enjoyable place for swimming and picnics. And Sicamous is great for families with its water park, lawns and volleyball court. There are of course other sandy beaches, but most of these are either private or charge substantially for access. The beach near the Quaaout Lodge was once a very popular destination for Kamloops summer beach lovers, but it is now only available for lodge guests. There is great sand and views at Pierre’s Point and Sandy Point, but these areas are very packed, private campgrounds. Also, the water here, especially later in the summer can get warm and questionable as the lake water quality in Tappen and Salmon Arm Bays has been steadily deteriorating. Continued on page 8...

Frank Johnson, 82, of Chase BC, passed away suddenly on August 11th at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops surrounded by his family. Frank left his home of Souris, Manitoba to pursue a career with the CPR. His work as an engineer spanned through the era of steam trains to diesel engines, from Via Rail passenger to the historic Kettle Valley Line. With riding the rails Frank had resided in Brandon, Winnipeg, Thunderbay and Kenora before moving to Revelstoke in 1971. It was there me met then married Anne Parker (1980). The CPR kept him busy at Roger’s Pass and Field. Then Frank and Anne move to Kamloops where he worked to Spence’s Bridge, Merritt and the Kettle Valley to which Frank was the last engineer of the Kettle Valley rail line. He and his wife moved to Chase where he retired in 1989 and resided for 29 years. Frank had many special passions, a love for family, a love for flying airplanes, a love for hockey (especially the Vancouver Canucks) and curling. And of course his love for playing crib especially with Frank and Anne’s dearest and closest friend Stephanie Price (we love you Steph). He looked forward to his daily visits and friendly banter with many including his close neighbours Brenda and Lyle Patterson (we are forever grateful for your friendship). Frank also enjoyed playing darts, attending events at the Legion (to which he was a member) and of course going to the casino. Frank was survived by his loving wife of 35 years Anne Johnson, 3 step daughters, Lynn Freeland, Lori McNaughton, Leah Parker (Eugene Kusy), as well as numerous relatives throughout BC, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. The best swim was actually at the west Blind Bay beach, where the water is clean and there are two docks. There was some oil on the water at Mara Lake and as happens elsewhere, the fumes from the speed boats were at times disturbing.

The final stop was the shoreline just east of Canoe that some locals refer to as “nipple beach” due to its clothing optional reputation. It is just a short hike down from the highway and across the tracks to a rocky beach with clean water and a fabulous view of Bastion Mountain.
