10 Questions WITH...
CALL
This week we chat with Bette Carre (Bette pronounced like Betty), who owns and operates Silver Linings, a thrift store in Chase. Q • How did you get involved in the thrift business? A I’ve always loved the thrill of the “hunt”. Looking for items for my own collections or getting the best deal possible. My husband, Kelly, also enjoys collecting. When we found out about the storage auction world we thought it would be a possibility to continue our “hunting” and also provide stock for, what we thought would be, a needed business for Chase. Q • What are the biggest challenges with running this type of business? A • Trying to convince people not to drop items off at the store after hours. By the time I get
Your Local Realtor
to work I usually find the items picked through and spread all through my parking lot. Q • What role do you think used/ second hand stores have in a community? A • Most items that end up in my store have plenty of life left in them. Rather than having these items end up in the landfill they are cleaned and tested and then past on to a new owner at a greatly discounted price. It’s a win, win situation.... happy environment..... happy customer Q • What do you do for fun? A • Fun? Dealing with the people of Chase is fun. I enjoy my job and the people I see every day.

by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author, Journalist, Freelance Writer
“In the 19th century, religion, liquor and politics formed a triumvirate that alternately amused, stirred up or pacified the populace” – so said some historians in the past. With tongue firmly in cheek, the gifted writer, Stephen Leacock, accurately summarized late 19th and early 20th century politics in small town and rural Ontario in “Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town” with the following: “Everybody in Mariposa is either a Liberal or a Conservative or else is both. Some of the people are or have been Liberals or Conservatives all their lives and are called dyed-in-the-wool. …. These people get from long training such swift penetrating insight into national issues that they can decide the most complicated question in four seconds. There are other people whose aim is to be broad-minded; and who vote Liberal or Conservative according to their judgment of the questions of the day. If their judgment tells them that there is something in it for them in voting (a certain way) then they do so. But the one thing that nobody is allowed to do in Mariposa is to have no politics!” The political realm has long been tainted with the unsavory, whether it was by the vote-buying jug of whiskey in the east or the $2 bill in the west, as well as tinted with sometimes amusing rationale. But in this day and age of education, media, website, Freedom of Information, and the ability to justify and conclude, it is sad that large swaths of the electorate have no interest in knowing the issues or in checking party records—and in the end, do not vote. The right to vote, the right to choose is something people have died for over hundreds of years—and still give their lives for today. In addition to older Canadians, it was heartening to see young people, during the last fall’s election, rallying, attending campaign stops, and holding politicians’ feet to the fire to get answers. People do, indeed, get the government they deserve. If citizens do not take time to get the details, do not educate themselves about what is good for Canada, do not vote, and do not keep track of what governments are doing, they could be throwing their country to the wolves. It was once asked what societies could function WITHOUT—big media or big government? And the answer was “big
government.” The news was considered essential. Without the media, especially today’s instant visual, online and audio communication, governments would get away with … well, murder, literally and figuratively. Not to say that the populace should believe unthinkingly as gospel truth everything they hear and see—all the good, the bad and the ugly. Verifying the source and the facts is important. Certainly, the media can be manipulated. People must weigh the issues. Eventually, truth wins out. An enterprising reporter or journalist will dig deep, seek evidence—and broadcast it. It appeared by the late 1970’s that television had turned elections into another media event. Candidates were being sold to us like soap and beer. And politics could be turned off with the flick of a switch. Democracy seemed to face real danger as a result of the media: the danger of judging candidates not as individuals seeking office on the basis of their programme or their character, but rather on the basis of their appeal as television personalities. Nothing has changed since then. In fact, spin-doctors and marketing gurus have made things worse. However, it is up to citizenry to pay attention. Be less oblivious. Stand up for what’s right. Demand better of those in power. The electorate is, in fact, the boss. They pay the taxes that pay the salaries of those in Ottawa. The politicians ought to answer to them—and not just at election time. Voters should expect and demand the best of those in Parliament. Ottawa is a twilight zone, where issues are often fuzzy, the facts blurred, and spin rampant. The real world elsewhere is where life happens, where freedom must be preserved—freedom of expression, freedom of political bent, and freedom of belief. Citizens are obligated to keep their representatives in touch with reality. Canadians’ well-being, their rights, and their democracy depend on making politicians accountable. All this being said, I agree with those who hope that politics does not become too serious and who think that we still need to laugh at and with our politicians and at ourselves. A little comic relief would go a long way!

Walter Olav Neros
May 05, 1938 – Nov 1, 2016
Walter died peacefully at his home in Kamloops following a courageous eight year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife of 55 years, Diana, his two sons, David of Denny Island, Brad (Michel) of Walhachin and his daughter Holly of Kamloops. Walter was born in Cumberland BC, the only child of Olav and Bessie Neros. He grew up in Royston, attending elementary school there and in Union Bay, then Courtenay High School. After graduation he returned for grade 13. His favourite subjects were recess, shop and sports. As Walter grew up, he followed in his father’s footsteps with his love for hunting, carpentry and fishing. He and his father built a small boat for commercial fishing which he used on weekends and holidays in his teen years. He was also an avid baseball player. In 1959, a family friend suggested that Walter might like a career with the BC Forest Service which he started that spring in Alert Bay. In 1960 he accepted a job as Assistant Ranger in Hazelton BC. It was a long way from home but he thought Hazelton might also offer him some decent hunting and fishing. For 12 years he worked first as an Assistant Ranger in Hazelton, Smith Inlet, Terrace, Kitwanga, and Dease Lake with 3 training sessions at Green Timbers Forestry Station in Surrey, then as Deputy Ranger in Terrace, Prince Rupert and Bella Coola. It was a happy day when he reached his goal of being a Forest Ranger in Kitwanga in 1972. In 1975 he moved to Chase as Forest Ranger, planning to stay there forever but when the office was closed and Forest Rangers disappeared into memory 5 years later, he moved to Salmon Arm Forest District, first as Resource Officer Engineering, then Operations Superintendent, and finally to Field Operations Supervisor from which he retired in 1994. Walter was a confident, skilled, unhurried and patient person. He liked to build things and was also very good at fixing things. He loved a good card game, was an avid gardener and a skilled fisherman. He was a longtime member of the Chase and District Fish and Game Club and helped to run monthly Trap shoots as well as take part in them. He enjoyed camping as long as it was beside a fishing lake and liked to visit family and friends. Due to his declining health, in 2014 Diana and Walter moved to Kamloops to be closer to medical facilities and to Holly. Walter requested that there be no formal service. If you wish a donation can be made to a charity of your choice or you might simply remember him with a walk in the forest that he loved and spent 35 years of his life to help manage and protect. Pin Chatter: News from the Bowling Alley submitted by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes
It was all about our Youth Bowlers this past week at Village Lanes! We were happy to play host to the first Youth Travel Tournament of the year this past Sunday at the lanes, and we are pleased to say that it went off without a hitch! 8 teams competed in the event; three teams from Chase, two from Kamloops, two from Kelowna, and one from Vernon. Of the fifteen competitors from Chase, two from Kamloops, two from Kelowna, and one from Vernon. Of the fifteen competitors from Chase, five of them ended up earning a silver medal! Congratulations to Brook Mindel, Carson Mickelson, Jordan Fletcher, Mikea Boadway, Tristan Jules, and coach John Mosimann! The silver medalists just missed out on the gold medals by 52 pins, but we were extremely proud of how they bowled this past weekend! More in youth news; Village Lanes just learned that we will be hosting the Youth Continued from page 3...

10 Questions with Bette Carre
A • You often have movies playing in the store - what are some of your favourite movies? I love a good comedy. I do have to be selective of what I play in the store so they are pretty well G rated movies. Q • You live in Pritchard now , where are you originally from? A • Born in Manitoba, raised in a small town on the Peace River in Northern BC. Q • What do you think Chase needs? A • Still agree that Chase needs some venue for the young people to keep them interested and occupied. Q • Travelling wise, what’s the furthest trip you have ever taken? A • I’ve travelled as far south as Los Angeles California and as far east as Barrie Ontario

from Revelstoke. Zak “Larceny” Larson was in net and stopped 28 of 32 to earn a W for the 300 fans in attendance. No scoring in the 1st but in the 2nd Revelstoke came out flying and the biscuit was in the wrong basket in 30 seconds from the stick of Michael Lenoury on the PP. Local hockey product Cody Hodges got that back on the powerplay assisted by Fidanza and Bourne. Then Fidanza gave Chase the lead from Bourne and Howlett on a beautiful three way passing play, a wow moment! GRIZZLIES got a spectacular shorthanded tally from Daniel Fisher and the game was tied at 2-2. However, Palaga on the powerplay from Pat Brady and Black had the fans relaxing for less then 3 minutes when Tyler Chavez Leech pounds a powerplay goal past Larson. The goal tap is still in full flow though as Fidanza restores the lead from Cam Watson and Fournier, and prior to the end of the 2nd Brady from Evan Hughes and Hodges makes it 5-3. 8 goals in 20 minutes and the fans are buzzing! In the 3rd Leech with his 2nd for Revelstoke creates a great deal of tension, but this one goes in the books as a hard earned 5-4 character building victory. ADDITIONS & DELETIONS: Team Management has moved out Spencer Meyer, Sunil Sahota and Taylor Clark while bringing in 18 year old forward/ defenceman Jake Delorme from Jasper. Chase is #1 League wide on the powerplay, at home they are at 32.69%. The team is 2nd overall in goals scored with 8 players with 5 or more goals, for a balanced attack. Next up a rare Thursday home game encounter with the Sicamous Eagles. It is Remembrance and Legion Night and a special moment will be observed. Saturday the 12th finds the Summerland Steam in town at 7:00 pm. Please remember all the wonderful and brave people from the past that made our country of Canada the best in the world. LEST WE FORGET.
