phone call to the Administration of the Chase Heat Hockey Club made a huge impact at Sun Valley Estates. Our maintenance crew knew that our “aging” membership would have a difficult time moving the wet heavy snow from around our buildings and on our decks. Twenty smiling young men showed up

in what Brad Fox said would be a "small army". That small army worked very hard and very fast and completed the job in a very short time period. These young men have set the bar pretty high for any hockey players who will come after them. We at Sun Valley are very grateful for this kind gesture. Good Luck with the remainder of the season. Well done Chase Heat!

• On January 23, Chase RCMP were called to the Pine St bridge in Chase, to assist with a male who was threatening to jump off the bridge into the frigid waters of Little Shuswap Lake. Police attended and closed the bridge for a short period of time and spoke with the male, who agreed to climb back over the safety railing and on to the safe side of the bridge. Police were then able to transport the 50 yr old male to Royal Inland Hospital for medical treatment. • On January 23, Chase responded to the Sorrento area for a report of a break and enter in progress. When police arrived, they discovered the suspect had fled, but that the suspect had entered a residence and assaulted both occupants inside before fleeing. Police tracked down the suspect at his residence and arrested the Suspect for Break and Enter and Assault. Invasive Asian clams can produce up to 70,000 eggs per year Submitted

Invasive Asian clam shells found on Shuswap Lake beach may indicate a new infestation, highlights importance of Clean-Drain-Dry. Clam shells found on a beach in the Shuswap last fall have been identified as invasive Asian clam. At this time only dead shells have been found. “The Provincial staff have told us they have not confirmed any live individuals, and indicated that monitoring will continue for the coming season” says Sue Davies, Aquatic Coordinator for the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society. However, populations of the invasive clam aren’t far off: they do exist in several lakes in the lower mainland and are widely distributed in Washington State. This is the first indication that they may have spread to Shuswap Lake. Members of the public are asked to please report any suspected invasive species via the Provincial “Report Invasives BC” smartphone application (available for download from www.gov.bc.ca/ invasive-species) and any suspected invasive zebra or quagga mussels to the Report All Poachers and Polluters hotline 1-877-952-7277. Asian clams are small bivalve shellfish, originating in Asia. They are considered invasive due to their negative impacts on many North American waterways.

Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS) provides education and information to the public regarding invasive species such as Asian clam. CSISS has been monitoring lakes in the region for invasive species as part of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy’s provincial lake monitoring program. To date, none of the samples from Shuswap Lake have come back positive for Asian clam larvae. The larvae of Asian clam are microscopic and could potentially be transported in standing water in boats.

Adult Asian clams are also small – the size of a fingernail – and could be embedded in mud on a boat or boat trailer. “It’s possible that Asian clams came to the Shuswap as fishing bait, as live food, or accidentally inside a watercraft,” says Davies. “It is super important not to transport invasive species. Never release

live animals or plants into waterways, and remember to Clean Drain and Dry your watercraft when moving it between waterbodies,” she adds. “We encourage all boaters, anglers, and paddlers to Clean Drain Dry their watercraft and gear every time they move from one lake to another because it is the most effective way to prevent the spread of invasive species.” “Just walk around your boat, remove any mud or plants, drain compartments, mop up standing water with a chamois cloth, and make sure everything, including your fishing gear, is properly clean and dry before relaunching into a new lake or river. It’s pretty simple and can prevent a world of problems,” explains Davies. Asian clams are self-fertile, so a single clam can start a new population. They can produce up to 70,000 eggs per year and can reach densities of up to 20,000 individuals per square meter of lake bed. They are filter feeders and can reduce biodiversity and food available for fish. Dense populations may have the potential to clog filters on hydro systems and water pipes, imposing costly maintenance. They are also known to harbour parasites that are harmful to humans if the clams are consumed raw. Travellers bringing watercraft to BC are encouraged to visit the provincial website, https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/ content/invasive-mussels/bringing-yourboat-to-bc

Pete and Ray Murray – Part II

More than just great corn!

By Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist

Your scribbler’s article last summer highlighted the tasty corn produced by Peter and Raymonde Murray on their heritage farmland near Chase. But that’s not all! If you’re a lover of lamb, ya gotta contact the Mur rays, sooner rather than later. Tasty meat at an excellent price, so good with a dash of mint sauce, is now available, and many customers are phoning in their whole or half lamb orders and heading to Wagon Wheel Ranch to pick them up. Having purchased a half lamb recently, my husband and I can attest to the flavour of the meat and the excellent

cuts the Murrays’ butcher did up. This high quality is the result of grass-fed livestock, raised in a stress-free pasture and field environment, the flock being guarded by stalwart quasi sheep dog, “Frankie,” a n d at t e n d e d to by the dedicated Mur rays. N o hormones or antibiotics are administered to the critters—they just are as sheep and lambs should be. Happy and growing. So if lamb chops, a roast, rack of lamb, leg of lamb or ground are some of your favourite dinner meals, Peter and Ray have got it covered. Contact 250.371.4600.

To beat the best you need everyone healthy and 60 minutes of hard work. The railroaders from Revelstoke scored three times, two on the man advantage in less then 11 minutes. “Captain Crunch” Cam Watson gave the locals hope on the powerplay from Brandon Gremaud and Matthew Poole, after 20 minutes it was 3-1. In the 2nd the Grizzlies counted a couple more goals for a 5-1 lead. In the 3rd their powerplay iced this contest, the final 6-1 for the visitors. For those watching it was a lesson in what it takes to win a championship. Saturday night the 25th the HEAT travelled to Armstrong to face the North Okanagan KNIGHTS. Entertaining Jacob Biensch scored in the 1st, assisted by Jayden Russell and older brother Caleb Biensch. In the 2nd the game was tied up before Gavin Mattey got his first of the night from Caleb Biensch and Danton L’Heureux. Cameron McKenzie made it 3-1 from Luke Recchi and Corson Nordick and then the KNIGHTS popped in a powerplay goal. After 40 minutes it was 3-2. Mattey got his 2nd of this contest from Breckin Erichuk and Hayden Wiebe early in the 3rd, but North Oak made it a 1 goal game once again. Marino Bordin sealed the deal with an empty net tally to send Chase home on the bus with a 5-3 win. The HEAT host the Osoyoos Coyotes Friday the 31st and the following evening slide into Revelstoke to meet the GRIZZLIES. The makeup game for the postponed New Year’s Eve clash with the Kamloops STORM happened Tuesday the 28th and will be reported next week. Heat Beat: The sick and wounded blight that has not helped the HEAT in 2020 continues, but good times will be returning very soon. One of the few highlights on Friday got the loudest cheer of the night from fans and teammates. Matteo Bordin a 15 year old playing in his first KIJHL game for the Chase HEAT laid on a serious slobberknocker that created a huge buzz. Sometimes that’s all it takes to make something special for all those in attendance. See you Friday!
