Module TWO: English for Career Paths Part I: Your Future Careers A WAITS 1. Why English is so important for your career? English is one of the most used languages in the world. Even outside of countries like the U.S. and the U.K., many people can speak and understand English. And if you include people who speak it as a second language, an estimated 1 billion people worldwide speak English! On top of this, 67 countries have English as their official language and there are 27 countries that have English as their secondary official language. Why is this? It all has to do with history and the key is the British Empire. Throughout the centuries, the British Empire expanded and ruled over many different countries, including most of the ones just mentioned and many more. In many cases, the British forced the people they ruled over to speak English and some of these countries still speak English, even if it isn’t their main language. For example, why do people in Ireland know English but barely speak the land’s original language, Gaelic? Because Britain ruled over Ireland for hundreds of years. English may have a complicated past, but it has a bright future. Because so many people can speak the language, it helps connect us in a global world. It can also help you in your personal and professional life. Below are the ways that knowing the language can help you as an English language learner. The Importance of English: 5 Valuable Reasons to Learn the Language 1) English Opens New Career Opportunities First and foremost, learning English can help you pursue and obtain more career opportunities. These days, the job market is global—many companies need employees who can communicate with partners and clients all over the world. Very often, that means finding employees who speak English. Are you job hunting? Are you looking for a promotion within your company? Do you just want to keep your professional options open? Learning English is an important step forward to all of those goals. The global job market has even created new positions for bilingual people. By learning English, you could become a translator, a language teacher or an English marketing professional for a global company. No matter what career path you decide to pursue, learning English is a valuable skill. It’ll help you become a better, more sought-after employee as well as a more well-rounded person. 2) English Tests Can Get You Into School If you learn English well enough to pass tests like the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) you can study in English-language universities across the globe. That’s great news if you want to move to an English-speaking region or work in one—a student visa can get you there. Or you may simply want to take a few classes abroad. A successful English test will show colleges and universities that you’re ready. The TOEFL, noted above, is one of the most common English proficiency tests. Others include the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the Cambridge exams. Some colleges or language centers even offer classes to help you practice for these tests. Even if you don’t need to take a test for a specific reason, or have already graduated from college, studying for an English test can still really help you improve your language skills. It’ll teach you the essential skills needed to communicate in English and if you end up passing the test, it means your English has become very strong! 3) English Is the Top Language of the Internet English is the most-used language online, with nearly 1 billion users typing and chatting in the language. If you can understand and read English, you’ll be able to access and enjoy many more resources online. You can read online news articles. You can leave comments on an English video. You can understand Tweets from English-speaking celebrities. You can participate in a discussion on a forum. The possibilities are endless! Obviously this is helpful if you’re just using the internet to browse and have fun. But many people and businesses also need to conduct research, market themselves or communicate and develop connections online—English will be crucial for success. Email is also now a very common way to talk with people all over the world. Email is the primary way for many companies to communicate with customers or other businesses. Being able to write emails or other correspondences in English is another important asset for employers. Whether it’s for fun or for work, if you can understand English, you’ll be able to communicate with more people online or use many more materials. 4) English Makes Your Life More Entertaining Want to put more books on your bookshelf? Want more options for a Friday movie night? Learning English will open a whole world of entertainment for you. You won’t need to rely on translations— you can enjoy the authentic originals. Understanding English means you’ll get to enjoy modern Hollywood blockbusters (very popular/successful movies) as well as classic films from different generations. If you aren’t sure where to watch movies in English, check out streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video—as well as free services like Crackle and Tubi TV. Want even more English learning with your entertainment? Check out FluentU. FluentU offers real English-language videos (like movie clips and trailers, funny YouTube videos, news reports and more) that’ve been transformed into language learning experiences. Each video comes with interactive captions—click any word you don’t recognize, and you’ll get an instant definition and pronunciation. Of course, learning English will make other types of entertainment available to you, too. You’ll also be able to read popular books that were written in English, like “Harry Potter,” “Twilight,” “The Hunger Games” and more. Plus, many famous pop culture icons come from famous English classics. If you can read these books, you’ll better understand the culture of the English world. (The everpopular character Sherlock Holmes was originally from a series of books written in English in the 1800s!) 5) Learning English Can Make You Smarter On top of all of these benefits, learning a new language such as English helps your brain function in new ways. Literally! Research shows that learning a new language changes your brain structure (don’t worry, it’s in a good way). It impacts the parts of your brain that are responsible for memory, conscious thought and more. Put simply, learning a new language can make your brain stronger and more versatile, improving the way you think. Research also shows that bilingualism can keep the brain strong and healthy into old age, and helps with memory, concentration and other skills. It can also help you on standardized tests (which will be great for the TOEFL!) and make you more creative. If you learn English, you could read a book in English, take a class in English or do all kinds of other things. This will open up the pathways to many other experiences, help you learn new things and make you feel smarter https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/importance-of-english-language/ 2. Workers and Leaders In current society, there are 2 types of staff, worker and leader. Worker focuses on daily job while leader focuses on long term career. A Job, is a task or activity performed by a person, as a part of regular employment to earn money is known as Job. The person who performs the job is known as an employee and the person for whom the job is performed is known as an employer. It involves mental or physical work or both. There is a fixed time for doing a job. Rights, duties, functions, responsibilities and powers are associated with each job. No doubt, the job is one of the best sources of income to earn the livelihood. That is why, most of the youngsters join jobs, just after completing their education to earn a steady income, gain some experience, get independent and settled as soon as possible. Normally, people hold a job for a certain period. Once the purpose for which they joined the job is accomplished or when they get some better opportunity for life, the job holders will leave the job. A Career, is defined as the occupation endeavoured by a person, for an important period of his life. It is the series of jobs that a person has done all over his life. It is the long-term goal of an individual’s life. A career is not confined to a job only, but it is a course of life, in which a person employs his knowledge, skills, education, competencies. Career is not just making money to earn bread and butter, but it is something bigger. It’s what a person loves to do, it is what a person interested in, it is what a person is passionate about, it is what that keeps a man working without getting distracted, it is something for which a person can take any kind of risk, it is what a person wants to see himself as, in the future. When it comes to the career path, people pay more attention towards the job satisfaction rather than money. They will learn new things, research about their career as much as they can, make relations with clients or other parties create prospects. The career of a person depends on his history and his plans. Key Differences Between Job and Career
The job is defined as a task or duty performed by a person for getting a salary or wages. Career refers to an occupation carried on by a person for his entire life.
A job is a trip, but career is a journey.
In a job you invest your time and skills to earn money, but when it is about career, you invest your time in following your dreams.
A job is when you work for a fixed time. Conversely, a career is when you don’t know whether it is morning or afternoon or night, you sleep late at night and wake up early just to learn and explore more and more.
A job is a means for securing the needs of life, but a career is an end in itself, i.e. what a person endeavours until he retires.
People hold a job, for a short term while a career is seen as a long-term goal of an individual.
The job requires education and skills. On the other hand, career needs specialisation in a specific field.

Conclusion Now, it might be clear, that a job is very different from the career. There can be some jobs in a person’s career. We can also say that there is only one career in a person’s life that incorporates all the jobs. A career is what you see yourself in the future. A job takes your time, provides you with some work and penny. However, a career not only gives you money but also opportunities to do what you love as well as satisfaction. One basic difference between job and career is that job is what you are doing at present, but career is what you have done so far and what you are going to do next. https://keydifferences.com/difference-between-job-and-career.html

2. Essay Outline for any trainings and or scholarships. Just to remember that after you have researched the scholarship or program and you are fully eligible and good fit. The next step is to fill in the application forms (off/on line according to the scholarship conditions) and answer all the questions. Please note that all questions should be write in formal essay style rather than informal paragraph. To help you familiar with the essay writing, please see the below outline for more information and help you brainstorm your ideas and put in sentences better.
https://handmadewritings.com/blog/guides/essay-outline/ May 9th, 2015 by Bryanna Davis Learning to speak English as a second language is not easy- especially when introduced to idioms like “who spilled the beans” or “she let the cat out of the bag.” If you’re trying to write an essay and keep hearing that you need to first “brainstorm” this idiom might be keeping you from putting paper to pen. Brainstorming is simply when you stop to think about the topic you will be writing about, then write down each idea or though that comes to mind. When writing your essay you must be deliberate with the For English Learning – Teaching Purpose Only

way you roll out information. However, before you even begin that first draft, the time in which you’re gathering your thoughts, you should write or type as quickly as possible to jot down each thought that comes to mind. Stay Organized If the idea of throwing your thoughts onto paper makes you cringe or draw a blank mind- don’t worry. There are a few more “orderly” ways that you can brainstorm- using a diagram can help you quickly gather your thoughts but also keep them organized at the same time. After you have your main topics that you wish to cover you can branch off of those topics with supporting ideals- and maybe even link your key topics together. In the end, it should resemble a spider web. Collecting Ideas After you have brainstormed it’s then time to turn your thoughts into your essay. Read through your thoughts and establish where each will fit within your essay. Your essay should include the following parts: Introduction 1st body (strongest support) 2nd body 3rd body Conclusion
See Past Essay Questions and Answers. Just to note that this is not the good essay at all. Any questions, are not answer the same. That means they depends on the applicants themselves to think, brainstorm and write on the paper based on their background and purpose of study. Question 1: please describe which specific problem in your home country or region you want to address and how a master’s degree in your chosen field will help you address it. (400-600 Words) I have been working in development and education sectors in Laos for more than 4 years and have the confidence to conclude that the biggest problem in Laos is the low - quality Education in all levels. Unqualified teachers lead to low quality students as well. This reason is from poor students in basic to higher education levels such as primary school to colleges and Universities not only education field but others’ too. Therefore, I highly would like to apply to pursue my master degree in one of the prestigious university under Civil Society Leadership Award via Open Society Foundation in order to learn and gain skills and experiences from modern countries and its higher education system in order to shape my future goal and the future of young generations of Laos. The first productive way to solve this problem is to re-advocate education educators, community leaders, local teachers and parents to clear comprehend on children’s education and characteristic for our future. Every relevant person must pay their most attention for what they are responsible in order to help each other to create a safer and educational environment place to boost children’s basic quality education both in and outside schools. The second powerful way to solve this problem is to improve bottom up development. It is really important to provide both moral and productive lessons students in primary level. These, will students to clearly understand the concept of humanitarian as well as gain wonderful knowledge and critical thinking and problem solving by themselves at the same time. This knowledge will be an inner awareness and skills to help students to be self-reliance or solving future problems themselves when they grow up. Apart from learning in University, I sure that if possible, I can learn and gain skills from outside campus such as internship with development and education organization for example in Hong Kong to learn more about sustainable education for all and use this skills and knowledge to adjust and apply in Laos too. I ensure that my selected MEd program will offer me with measurable teaching and learning tools, curriculum design, conducting, monitoring and evaluation and classroom management knowledge and skills, these will be the best assets for me to take into account and adapt to use in Laos and to enhance their children’ education, participation and development.
Question2: How would participating in this program impact your community and enhance your long-term career goals? I, myself is a part of Save the Children Organisation employee and having a passion to be a better NGO operator and future leader. I would like to improve and upgrade both my personality and future career goal. To begin with personality development. Firstly, it would really need to upgrade personal skills such as language and communication skills. As we all know, English is a worldwide language where widely used in almost all parts of the globe and it also be an ASEAN language where we can share and exchange ideas of addressing locally, nationally or even global issues [partnership for goal, UNDP, SDG 11]. To take a look at my current workplace, English is partially use daily for communicating with expat employees, grant proposal, project and activities results presentation and reporting. I understand and sure that international language skills can give me a skills for sharing key messages to the world around and make our organisation move forward to a higher stage and will bring a more benefits for my communities where I am working. Secondly, Professional career goal to improve my leadership and programme management skills. A superb leader has the ability to think critically, have a clear and precise vision or belief and can lead his or her team to reach that stage. For example, President Barack Obama who created and expanded opportunities for not only US and around the world especially EU and ASEAN nations. If i am selected for this YSEALI; professional fellow program in US-Montana University for a month, I sure that I will gain a lot of knowledge and skills from it such as education and management capacity in order to advance myself, my organisation and my communities to a new height especially education for all.

Part IV: Scholarship Interview and English Language Test 1. Scholarship Interview How to answer common scholarship interview questions By Tamara, 06/11/2015. You already have a good idea of what to expect during the scholarship selection process, including the common scholarship interview questions you might receive. But, do you know how to answer those questions? Some of them may seem rather simple, but your answers could ultimately make or break your chances of scoring the award. Remember, this is your one and only chance to impress the scholarship review board or committee chairperson, so you’ll need to have a game plan before entering the arena. But don’t worry — I have a few tips to help you ace some of the most frequently used scholarship interview questions. Here are five that you are likely to receive during most of your interviews. “Tell us about yourself” This question is often used as an ice-breaker and should give the scholarship committee a better idea of who you are as an individual. They want to know what sets you apart from the other scholarship candidates, so don’t waste this opportunity by rehashing your résumé or transcript. Focus on something that distinguishes you from the other applicants or something that that they cannot find by reading your application. For example, you may be pursuing an engineering degree, but in your free time you create cartoons just for fun. Perhaps, you have a Tumblr page filled with crazy food concoctions that were created to illustrate engineering problems, or maybe you are the direct descendant of the person who invented indoor plumbing. The idea is to find something that sets you apart from the other applicants, whether that’s a talent or a strange genealogical fact, and let your enthusiasm shine through. “Give us an example of a time you overcame adversity” Please, whatever you do, don’t use your grades for this interview prompt, unless there were some extremely rare circumstances that caused your academic marks to slide. Too many students think that it’s impressive to raise a ‘C’ to a higher grade, when in reality many students have found themselves in the same situation. Instead, consider using an example that really illustrates a time where you were placed in an uncomfortable situation; for example, confronting someone who may have been bullying you or dealing with a difficult teacher. Other potential answers could include: instances of discrimination (gender, race, sexuality, etc.), being wrongly accused of something, or a sudden change in your family’s finances. Even working on agroup project with other students you would not normally associate with would be more interesting than explaining how you raised your GPA. “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Don’t let this one throw you. It’s basically the scholarship committee’s way of finding out if you have a game plan or you're just winging it. Try to envision where you want to be in five years, and then figure out how to get there. or higher?), internships or other outside activities that will help improve your chances of accomplishing your goals, as well as a financial strategy to cover all your expenses. Don’t simply say, “I expect to run my own business and live in New York City.” Take the committee on a journey and fully explain how the steps you are taking now will place you on the right path to reach your desired destination. “How do you plan to use the scholarship money?” If you were about to give someone $1,000 (or more), wouldn't you want to know that it was going to be spent on something worthwhile? That’s the same reason why the scholarship committee is asking you this question. It’s one thing to say you ‘need’ money for college, but it's quite another to actually show a provider where the proceeds will be put to use. Plan ahead by creating a budget that spells out all your estimated expenses for obtaining your degree, and don’t forget to include any anticipated income you may receive from your family or other resources. Assure the committee that you are applying to other scholarships, as well. It will impress the committee if they see you are taking an active role in keeping your student debt to a minimum. Don’t forget to bring along extra copies of your budget, too, just in case the committee wants a closer look. “Why do you deserve this scholarship?” I have to admit that this was my least favorite question during scholarship interviews, but it always came up. And to be quite honest, there really is no perfect answer. There are, however, some things you should definitely not include in your response. Don’t brag about your GPA or how many clubs you belong to at school. The majority of finalists will all have similar academic accomplishments, so it’s not worth repeating. It’s also not a good idea to declare that without the scholarship you’ll be unable to attend college. In most cases, that will be untrue. Yes, you may be unable to afford your dream college, but I assure you that there are other less expensive alternatives to earning your degree. Instead, be honest with the committee and acknowledge that there are other worthy candidates that probably deserve the award as much as you do, but remind them that your work ethic and past accomplishments are a good indicator of your future success. https://www.unigo.com/pay-for-college/scholarships/how-to-answer-common-scholarshipinterview-questions 2.
