The scars make me who I am

Angelique Berkowitz ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

It was on the fateful day of September 14, 2009, that a common life became distant and unknown for one young girl. The day she became nothing but a mere patient lying in a hospital bed ready to approach what was waiting for her on the other side of the operating table. Numerous thoughts flooded the mind of Hannah Colson (’13) as she braced herself for a surgery that she never imagined she would receive. Worries spread through her mind like wildfire as she contemplated everything that could possibly go wrong. She struggled to stay still, and barely got any sleep for fear that the surgery wouldn’t be a success. It was an event that would be remembered throughout the course of a lifetime and would remain unforgotten by the brazen PPCHS senior. It was on an ordinary day unlike any other when Colson discovered her rare condition. She went for a routine orthopedic appointment for scoliosis with her mother when her doctor discovered that her reflexes were unusually jumpy. As a result of the doctor’s uneasiness, Colson was directed to get an MRI following the doctor’s appointment. From the results of the MRI, the doctor determined that her spine was inflamed and sent her to a specialist who delivered the life-changing news- Colson would need to receive brain surgery for prevention of further harm to her brain. “When the doctor first told me that I needed to have surgery performed, I immediately started crying,” says Hannah Colson. “I kept saying I’m too young to have brain surgery. I would miss my first season of high school volleyball and was only fourteen years old. What made the news worse was when I was told that I would be receiving the surgery in only two months; I felt as if I didn’t have any time to prepare.” The health-related condition that Colson had been diagnosed with was labeled as a Chiari Malformation- meaning that her skull was too small for her brain causing her brain to block spinal fluids from entering her spine. and it made the process that much worse. After my surgery I decided I wanted to do something to fix this. I created a website called http://chiarikidz.com/ because I didn’t want any other kids or teens to go through the scary process similar to mine. I felt as if I was the one to show them that there is a good that comes out of such a negative situation.” Chiarikidz.com is a website created to tell the story of Hannah Colson. On the site, Colson writes a blog for readers hoping to capture the attention of those with the condition similar to hers. She writes an inspiring blog telling her story allowing readers to comment and share their stories too. The website helps those with the condition to cope with it as well as Colson herself. For Colson, the event of brain surgery left her with an endless amount of gratitude and a sense of helpfulness towards her community. “The fact that I could have been paralyzed really took a toll on me. One day I was walking on the beach with my mom and I saw a group of handicapped kids, and thought to myself, ‘wow that could have been me’. From that moment, I decided to volunteer with handicapped children. I have volunteered at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) special needs camp, Special Olympics, and Horses for the Handicapped. The kids I’ve encountered are amazing and have filled my life with inspiration,” says Colson. Hannah Colson’s life is changed forever. She experienced fear, pain, love and support which all were prominent factors throughout the course of her surgery and her recovery. She embraced her condition with a bit of uneasiness, but learned to accept her fate when the facts were plain to see. Colson had a condition plaguing to her health which was a negative aspect of her life that blossomed into something positive. As a result of her health condition, Colson gives back to her community in a way that is unimaginable; she helps those living the same life she once did only a few short months prior. “I always have a smile on my face, and am thankful for having received brain surgery,” says Colson. “Without it, I honestly wouldn’t be the same person I am today.”

What would you do if you won the Lottery? Nina Salciccioli STAFF WRITER

Imagine that you wake up one morning, check your lottery ticket that you bought and realize that your numbers match up exactly with the winning numbers called last night. Winning the lottery is a dream that becomes a reality for a few very lucky people around the world. But once you win the lottery, you have many difficult decisions to make. What would you do with all of that money that you won? Would you spend it all at once? Or would you save all your money and use it when you really need it? Our PPCHS students know exactly what they would do if they were to win the lottery. “If I won the lottery, I would use that money for college. I would also buy a car and I would give a lot of it to my parents and siblings.” –Nick Torres (Junior) “I would buy a plane if I won the lottery. I have always wanted to travel, and this

would be the perfect opportunity for me. I could travel to a new place every weekend. – Melanie Almonte (junior) “If I were to win the lottery, I would travel to Ireland. I’ve always wanted to go there.” –Jessica Kaminsky (Junior) “I hopefully will win the lottery some day and when I do I would give most of it away to charity and save the rest for college or a rainy day when I will need it the most. I would also buy whatever I want.” –Melissa Pierce (Freshman) “I would marry Justin Bieber if I ever won the lottery.” –Kayla Faulkner Although winning the lottery is a life changing event, sometimes it does not work out the way that you imagined it. Many lottery winners often go bankrupt due to excessive spending. According to the Missouri Lottery, 97 percent of jackpot winners say that the experience is a very positive one. But for 3 percent of all lottery winners, the hassles of winning, includ-

It is also dangerous for you to win the lottery and reveal your face for the media. People now know who you are, and they also know that you have millions of dollars. If you were to win the lottery it is important to remain anonymous and seek an attorney. If one day in the future a student from PPCHS ever wins the lottery, they can look back and see if what they want today will still apply for them in the future.

ally get to see my extended family very often, so this holiday break means a lot to me. For 2 weeks I’ll be in Mexico City, reuniting with my family. I’m beyond excited- I haven’t seen my cousins in over three years.” • Chris Lee Yee (’13): “I’ll be happily aboard the new Disney Fantasy cruise ship for a week. Along with my family, I’ll be going to Puerto Rico and other destinations. I’m mostly excited for New Year’s- there’s supposed to be a giant fireworks show on our own ship.” • Catalina Villegas (’14): “For the majority of my break, I’ll be exploring Orlando with my family, family friends, and best friend Nicole Cordoba (’14). I’m so happy I get to see parks such as Magic Kingdom and Islands of Adventure- who would’ve known I’d be riding rollercoasters for Christmas!”

It’s a time for apple pie, when the aroma of a freshly cooked ham clouds your home, and a mysterious man in a chubby red suit looks forward to being rewarded with milk and cookies at midnight. For some, their days may revolve around lighting a new candle at sundown, or free time is dedicated to wrapping expensive gifts in shiny, traditional wrapping paper. It’s the highly anticipated holiday season, and for many of the students here at PPCHS, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. Whether gathered around a frosted Christmas tree or a glowing Menorah, some may be across the globe or even remain here in Pembroke Pines, but regardless, PPCHS Jaguars look forward to a very, merry festive break. • Christian Alvarez (’14): “My family is staying Getting away for the holidays: PPCHS students get ready to make the best of their two week vacation. As the holidays approach, you find yourself being pressured to purchase the perfect gifts for your friends, teachers, and loved ones. However, trying to bring something new to the table, a lot of students are having trouble with their holiday shopping. It’s so simple to buy something cliché; a bag of candy, a stuffed animal, some home baked cookies. But why not try to go the extra mile? Why not try to buy something

Secret Santa: Junior Gabriela Garcia recieved a survival kit from her Secret Santa in Leadership class. Photo By: Rebecca Gonzalez

that no one else has ever given them before? Straying away from the expensive gifts here are some creative, homemade and “easy on your wallet” gifts to give to friends for the holidays: • “Survival Kit”: A great and inexpensive way to show your friends and loved ones that you really care about them is to create their very own “Survival Kit”. Usually placed in a decorated bucket or basket, this kit can hold all of the person’s

favorite and daily items. Items such as their favorite candy, favorite drink, warm fuzzy socks for the winter, or even a pack of pencils because they never have any for school, can go inside the kit. The gift will symbolize not only the amount of attention you pay to them, but also that you know exactly what they need and like. “My sister and I did this last year for my mother,” said junior Melanie Almonte, “We put all of her favorite things in there, including the random and crazy stuff that she holds in her purse. She absolutely loved it! She smiled and laughed when she opened it, knowing that it was a gift that she would put to use.” • Scented candles: Perfect for the holidays, scented candles offer a warm and “homey” feeling to anyone that lights them up. Whether it be a fruity scented candle, such as cherry, or a holiday scented candle like pine needles, candles offer the perfect gift for those who enjoy things such as warm houses, bubble baths, and relaxing afternoons. A gift like this gives your friends a reason to take a day off and just relax. • Your favorite books: Giving your friends and loved ones your favorite books may sound odd at first, but in truth this gift idea is very meaningful. After reading books that really inspired you or brought you into deep thoughts about life and other topics, you realize that they impacted you. Throughout your school years, you read countless amounts of novels and short stories, but in the end, there are only a few that really changed your train of thought or brought you into a world that you never knew existed. Giving your friends the books that impacted you most will show them that you wish to impact their lives

in a way that you can’t do on your own. Doing something like this symbolizes you giving away something that is very dear to you. “In the book The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the main character gave his closest friends his favorite books. It was a beautiful thing for him to do and it meant a lot to the friend that he gave it to. I think that bringing this idea to real life would be an amazing thing for someone to do,” said junior Jessi Rowe. • Recipe cards: Around the holidays, many people find themselves cooking and baking many different things. and others make the classic pumpkin pie, but it’s not a bad idea to change it up a little. Creating small and decorated recipe cards for your friends will help them bring something new to the table during this holiday season. It’s good to mix it up, and write down some funky desert ideas and tasty dinner dishes for your friends to share with their loved ones.

Clubs getting ready for the ho-ho-holidays Jessica-Lynn Carvajal STAFF WRITER

There’s only one topic that seems to be on everyone’s mind these past few weeks of December: the holidays. Both PPCHS students and faculty anticipate this long awaited break. Students can barely contain the excitement as all holiday related events approach. In preparation of winter break, Charter students, especially clubs, are taking on a variety of activities. One of SGA’s annual preparations for the holidays is the toy drive. This year Student Government is collaborating with Key Club in order to make the toy drive an even greater success. Hosted the last two weeks before winter break, the toy drive encourages students and faculty to donate an abundance of toys for children of any age. The toys are then going to be shipped off to needy children who otherwise would not receive any holiday gifts. SGA and Key Club are attempting to spice up their yearly holiday tradition, by instead of simply dropping off the collected toys, going to

deliver the toys to the children in person. The toys will be donated to the orphanage known as Children’s Harbor. Children’s Harbor is a program that provides a loving family atmosphere for foster children and children in distress. This center also introduces a program that condones the prevention and intervention of abuse and neglect through a family strengthening program. Each club is participating in some holiday fun. Newspaper, and Yearbook classes are taking part in the Secret Santa gift-giving game. This is when students are randomly assigned a classmate to buy a gift for and exchange on a given date. Everyone in the class chooses their person privately, without letting their person know they have chosen them. SGA is also participating in their traditional Secret Santa craze. This event will also occur the week before winter break. SGA has an interesting spin off to the common way of playing Secret Santa. Their festivities last all week long with creative surprises for each member every single day. Before the gift exchange,

Deck the halls with…Stress? Chelsi Chang STAFF WRITER

As more and more Christmas lights and decorative Menorahs find themselves nestled in the corners of window sills or hanging jauntily from the edges of homes, one can only feel a little excitement of the holidays. To students, this means one thing—winter break. The time to spend with family that they may only see only a few times a year, or it may just mean few extra days to sleep in. However, many students have seen that the usual slow down period teachers give as the break approaches won’t be coming this year. Instead, teachers have put the car into fourth gear and refuse to stop until the very last bell rings on December 21. It seems that there has been a ubiquitous feeling of stress roaming through the halls with all the projects and assignments teachers have been assigning last minute. What’s most stressful is the fact that these grades will basically make or break second quarter grades. There is no longer that light, airy feeling of knowing that Christmas is around the corner and all everyone wants to do is relax; no more Christmas parties, or free days—it’s crunch time. “It’s very stressful; you expect a break because it’s the holidays but it’s the complete opposite. I mean, for example, I have a physics project and a history fair project due on top of all the class work that still needs to be done. It’s just too much,” said junior Matthew Mitchell. Juniors in particular have been seeing the Grinch rear his ugly head the most, with physics projects such as Spaghetti Bridges and paper cars, history fair projects, AP mock exams, and drama competitions. Similar cries have been made by sophomore Demetri Garcia, “I’ve been really stressed out with all my AP classes, but I won’t let it affect my holidays because [the holiday work] can be finished pretty quickly and then you can relax.” For freshmen, the heavy workload before and during break has probably been the most difficult. Middle school requires no effort from their students the week before winter break—it’s usually a free week. “In middle school everything would just slow to almost a stop before winter break, we would do silly things like winter themed projects but now, in high school, it’s just been a lot harder,” says freshman Julian Brown. With all this work, it seems like more students will be spending more time in their room isolated from their families and maybe even missing out on some treasured holiday traditions. Or, if they put off the work for later so they get to spend time with their family, their New Year exhilaration will quickly die down with the burden on the work pushing them to spend a few stress-filled days trapped in their room. Junior Tatiana Bustamante says, “I mean I already know that because of all this work, I’m going to burn out early and I probably won’t spend as much time with my family. It’s just not fair.” Either way, students will be left feeling tired on their break. It seems like the best option is writing Santa a letter begging for an easier second semester.

SGA writes down their interests and things they like and appreciate such as their favorite candy, favorite scent, favorite food etc. in order for their Secret Santa to get an idea of what to give that person each day. The gift given each day leads up to the grand present, usually the largest/most significant, on the final day, Friday. “I am very excited to participate in Secret Santa this year, I think SGA is so creative in the way we are having secret Santa it makes it interesting” says junior Christian Alvarez. Not only are clubs participating in on the holiday fun, but sports teams as well. The Mayans were considered one of the smartest and most advanced civilizations of its time; they invented things like terraced walls for farming, a writing system, sophisticated art, architecture, and they made amazing developments in the fields of mathematics and astronomy. They used these intellectual skills to create what has recently become the infamous Long Count Calendar, which supposedly ends on 12/21/12 (December 21). Some have interpreted this date as the end of the world or the apocalypse, but there is little to no scientific proof that states this event will occur. NASA has been denying that the apocalypse is possible and has been trying to soothe the public and inform them that “on the 21st, the date of the winter solstice, a calendar cycle called the 13th b’ak’tun comes to an end. Although Maya scholars agree that the ancient Maya would not have seen this day as apocalyptic, rumors have spread that a cosmic event may end life on Earth on that day according to http://goo. gl/QZjX2. “If by some chance the world does end, then there’s not much we can do about it. If the end is inevitable and we can’t do

The Apocalypse: is it coming? anything to stop it, then bring it on; I’ll be ready,” says sophomore Symone Cyrus. Some potential ways that people expect the world to end on the 21st are a planet or asteroid slamming into the Earth and

all life. Some other ideas of how the apocalypse could occur are a nearby star becoming a supernova and engulfing the Earth while it is growing, killer solar flares sent out by the sun, intelligent aliens showing

up and taking over, the Earth’s magnetic poles shifting and switching positions, and of course, zombies.

“When I heard about the apocalypse I was scared at first, but then I thought about all of the other impending dooms that the world was supposed to endure like Y2K (2000), Nostradamus’ prediction that things would fall from the sky (1999), and all of the other times we have panicked for what seem like ridiculous ideas once we look back on them.” says junior Tyson Hartwell. Even though the 13th b’ak’tun is ending, the 14th b’ak’tun will start; the last one ended in the early 1600’s and the world didn’t end then, so there is no proof that rolling over into the next b’ak’tun will cause major disasters and terrible events to occur. Scientists and archaeologists have recalculated the Mayan long-count calendar and have found what they think is concrete evidence that the world will not end on the 21st; they say that the calendar actually doesn’t end for a number of years and it was previously miscalculated. “I don’t believe in the rumors about the apocalypse, but there is always that small percentage that something could happen. I know that I will have some supplies gathered and I’ll be with my family when everything is supposed to end because if we go out, we go out together,” says sophomore Kevin Borbolla about the supposed end of the world.

Texting turns 20 years old

iPhones are slowly taking over. Many parents may strongly agree that texting isn’t all that great, serving as a major distraction, and can even affect a person’s grammar. “Texting is great to have communication with others but it does have its harmful effects.” says AP Environmental Science teacher Mrs. Haviland, “People texting and driving scares me because it is such a great distraction. Also, I believe it’s a major cause of bullying since text messages are so immediate.” Students on the other hand, like to see texting as a great advancement in technology and a giant leap towards the future. “I feel technology has evolved a lot ever since 20 years ago and I can’t imagine how texting will be 20 years from now, if it is even still around.” says junior Andre Batista. The evolution of texting culture has dramatically changed over the years. Long ago, texting was short, simple, and to the point. Claus and effect of Santa’s diet Troy Bottom NEWS EDITOR

December 24th a familiar smell sweeps across the nation, swirly cinnamon, dreamy chocolate, and sweet sugar scents all seem to fuse into one as they linger through the sky, all for one cause, Santa Claus. Children gather around their parents and assist in the kitchen anyway they can to produce the finest quality cookies for jolly St. Nick. From fortune cookies, Oreos, to maybe even gingerbread men, every 24th night of December Mr. Claus consumes most likely the most diverse assortment of cookies ever digested on this earth. The different cookie options for Santa are one thing, but the number of cookies swallowed down is the captivating number. According to www.usatoday.com, 85% of America celebrates Christmas during their winter break. In number form, that would be equivalent to 291,000,975 people nationwide waiting for the delivery of gifts under their tree early Christmas morning. Another study recorded by www.nytimes.com said, among those families that celebrate Christmas, on average a single household leaves out 8 cookies for St. Nick, and 42% of those families leave out carrots for Santa’s trusty

Guidance welcomes a new improvement Victoria Alvarez ENVIRONMENTAL/HEALTH EDITOR

Offices are usually known as cramped, busy, and hectic workplaces. People are always busy, phones are constantly ringing and paperwork never stops piling up. People wait to be helped, standing in lines, tirelessly waiting to get their questions answered. But what if that could change? What if there was a place for you to sit and relax while waiting to be helped by a staff member? Here at PPCHS, a new lounge awaits all those who come to visit. With a Smart TV, pamphlets and comfortable seating, parents and students can enjoy there wait time while also learning more about the school. The lounge, located in the center of the guidance department, was donated by Ray Dass, the face of New England Prep for the SAT’s. Getting together with Mr. Bayer, Dass came up with the brilliant idea of the lounge, hoping to better inform students about the SAT’s. The Smart TV, located on the wall in the lounge, reports news and

slideshows about things such as SAT and ACT dates to anyone who is sitting on the comfortable black couches. “Ray Dass donated the lounge so that students and parents could be more informed about important things such as the SAT’s when they visit the office,” said Principal Mr. Bayer, “He wanted to donate to our school while also raising awareness about testing for students.” The SAT lounge focuses mostly around the school motto: College, Citizenship, Community. At PPCHS, the faculty wants to make sure that everyone in the Jaguar family feels comfortable. Charter is a small community, filled with teachers and staff members that strive to give students a better future. Knowing that students and parents always have questions and conferences with guidance counselors and other staff members, the SAT lounge is the perfect place for the Jags to sit and relax while waiting to meet up with their desired faculty member. “The lounge is all about making everyone

at PPCHS feel at home. We want to get parents involved and updated, while also getting the students to the next level in academics,” added Mr. Bayer. On Friday, December 21st, the PPCHS faculty hosted a party for the opening of the SAT lounge. While eating pizza and tasty treats, the faculty cut the ribbon, officially opening the lounge and its availability to parents, students, and even staff members. Thanks to Ray Dass and New England Prep, the PPCHS family now has a “family room” for all Jaguars. Renovations: The guidance office had some new furniture added to their waiting room. After the confetti settles and the party dies down, many people are faced with the decision of the perfect New Year’s resolution. Most look towards bettering themselves and their image as a resolution for a new year. However, some people take the wrong approach when it comes to being healthy and mistake healthy for “skinny.” This results in turning to unhealthy ways to be “healthy” with crash dieting and just plain starving themselves. It’s common to see the New Year as a new slate to start with positive health patterns. Being in good physical and mental shape as a whole helps your entire body in a multitude of ways. A healthy lifestyle is centered around these components: exercising, eating well, staying away from stress, surrounding yourself with supportive people and challenging your brain on a day to day basis (livestrong.com). Once this has been achieved, you will find yourself on the right path to bettering your lifestyle. The benefits of a healthy lifestyle can come in both long-term and short-term advantages. Reducing your risk of developing diseases is one of the long-term advantages. The Mayo Clinic has proven that by working out, eating well and not smoking, a person can minimize their risk of having a heart disease, diabetes, or other types of cancer. Living in a peaceful and stress-free environment can also help steer the body away from facing depression and anxiety as well as heart blood pressure and strokes. Long-term advantages are good things to have in mind when you are creating a positive lifestyle for yourself while having short-term goals can keep you motivated. For example, seeing the scale weigh ten pounds lighter can make a person feel like

negative thoughts and depression. So in a way, by simply switching your harmful habits to healthy ones, you’re not only bettering your physical health but also your mental health—which all in all makes for a happier life. This way of life allows for your sleep patterns to also go on the right path. In light of the New Year approaching, here are 4 tips on how to stay healthy in 2013: 1. is mostly the food in the snacking aisle at the supermarket will only have negative effects on the body. Instead, opt for some raw fruits, veggies or even a protein bar. “Instead of eating fruit snacks, I eat actual fruits to help keep my body in shape,” says sophomore Carmela Flores. 2. Sleep is good! Getting 7 hours of sleep a night can also affect your health. Studies have shown that having a full night of sleep can decrease your desire for high

carbohydrates and calorie-dense foods by 45% (WebMD). Although homework can pile up, make sleeping a priority and take short naps if you didn’t get a full night of sleep the night before. Avoid long naps that stretch for hours, they can mess up your body’s natural sleeping schedule and make you just as tired. “I take naps all the time, especially after a long day of school. But I had no idea that it was so bad for me. I thought it helped me more than hurt me, but I was wrong. The naps really mess up my sleeping schedule and leave me awake for a longer time period at night,” says junior Olivia Hamilton. 3. Take the stairs: As high school students, we don’t really have the time to always go to the gym, but there are little things you can do to stay fit. For example, when you’re out shopping or visiting a friend in an apartment building, take the stairs instead of the elevator and burn off a few more calories. A simple 30 minutes a day can promote weight loss, relieve stress, and reduce the chances of a heart disease. 4. Water is what you need: Instead of pairing a soda with your meal, replace it with a glass of water. The body needs at least 64 ounces of water a day to stay hydrated. Water minimizes your appetite, and acts as a natural cleanser to the body. Junior Natasha Viloria says, “I drink a glass of water before every meal to make me feel fuller and eat less.” It seems to be a common thing for people to start the New Year with a better and healthier version of themselves. Simple and easy methods, such as the ones listed above, can be taken for a fuller, happier and healthy new you- and New Year.

Everyone stuffs their faces with pastries, fattening foods, and carbs throughout the holidays. This holiday season, although extremely enjoyable and joyous for most people, can prove to be quite haunting and dismal if health isn’t taken into consideration. Despite food being a large part of family traditions during the holidays, precautionary measures can be taken to avoid putting on those extra pounds during the winter while still being able to enjoy the best seasonal snacks. When the holidays roll around this year, try to avoid munching on unhealthy foods and substitute them with healthier, more nutritious snacks. It is possible to have healthy and delicious food to enjoy during the holidays!

Gingerbread men often surround the inside of people’s homes during the holidays. This year, these delicious treats can be enjoyed without having to worry about nutritional factors. What you’ll need: •1 and 1/4 cups of almond flour •2 tablespoons of organic unsalted butter or no hydrogenated shortening (for dairy-free) •1 tablespoon of honey •1 tablespoon of organic blackstrap molasses •1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract •1/2 teaspoon of baking powder •1 teaspoon of ginger •1 teaspoon of cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg •1/8 teaspoon of cloves (optional) Preheat oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Melt butter and mix with honey, molasses, and vanilla until smooth. Add dry ingredients. Dough will be soft and sticky. Cut out two long pieces of parchment paper. Roll dough to 1/8th of an inch thickness, sandwiched in between pieces of parchment paper. Peel off top sheet of parchment and flip dough from bottom sheet to the top sheet so that dough has been peeled off of both sheets of parchment, ensuring that it will be easier to transfer to cookie sheet. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and peel away bits of dough around cut outs, or flip cut outs onto cookie sheet lined with parchment. Bake for 18 minutes. “The specialists” gives hope to those affected by autism Victoria Alvarez and Gabriela Garcia ENVIRONMENTAL/HEALTH EDITOR AND BUSINESS MANAGER

For most businesses, one of the main problems when first getting started is the hiring of their employees. Depending on the business, there are distinctive and certain things that they look for, such as their ability to talk to large amounts of people or their ability to write reports and papers. However, no matter what the business is, industries are constantly in search for workers that can focus, perform tedious tasks, and work well with technology. It’s safe to say that a normal human being might not be able to deliver all of these things. But what if someone who was special, in different ways that many could not understand, could perform these tasks? What about someone who is autistic? Autistic people have the ability to focus on the smaller things, the things that many normal, working adults would miss. After his three year old son was diagnosed with autism, Thorkil Sonne and his wife knew that their plans for the future would change entirely. They would have to adapt to a different lifestyle than most people were used to. However, over the years spent with their son, Lars, they realized that he was far more special than most people. Living near Copenhagen, Denmark, their son could name train schedules for major routes for the country. He could memorize maps and drawings, reproducing everything without any error. Eventually, Sonne started to think of a business plan. According to a story on Sonne and his family in the New York Times, written by Gareth Cook, Sonne realized that many companies have trouble finding workers that can perform specific tasks, such as data entry or software testing and that some autistic people would be exceptionally good at those tasks. Making one of the biggest decisions of his life, Sonne quit his job in 2003, took a two day course on accounting, and start-

ed a company called Specialisterne, Danish for “the specialists”. In this business, autistic adults would be placed in the best environments and would be considered to

ing 35 autistic adults. Currently in in Denmark, Sonne is planning to move with his family to the United States to expand his company in the next few months. Sonne’s

be the qualified person for the job that Specialisterne was looking for. Working as consultants for companies that need their aid, autistic adults can work in and out of the office, interacting with people each day. According to the New York Times story, for about a decade, the company has been modest in size, employ-

work has inspired and shown many people that autistic adults can’t still have jobs. However, though these jobs open a new door for autistic individuals as workers, the jobs do not open the door to present day offices. Think of today’s professional work field as something similar to the competition of being admitted into college. It is an

7

extremely difficult and stressful task. The same goes for the work field and the struggle of finding a job. It’s extremely competitive, to say the least, for everyone is striving for that one sacred spot. Of course, this would be the time for everyone to dress to impress, write up a ridiculously impressive resume, and blow away the boss with complex speaking skills and indirect gestures of knowledge. For the majority, these kinds of things will determine whether they are employed or not. But, for people with limiting natural conditions the difficulty level multiplies. Present workplaces are far more demanding in all aspects of life – socially, time wise, and physically. Many autistic adults would not be able to work in an atmosphere like that. They need a more predictable environment, where they would not have to live up to such requirements. Specialisterne brings relief to these unique individuals. They open new doors of opportunity and hope by providing them with a valid chance at having a stable income- a chance at living a normal life. Naturally, those of us here at PPCHS are putting efforts forward to do the same. The Communications Department at PPCHS has decided to take up a project to benefit the cause. Many of the members of the Jaguar family deal with the struggles of autism daily, and have been affected in one way or another. In a supportive and determined light, a team has been created to join in on the Dan Marino WalkAbout Autism Walk. The event will take place on January 26th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in an effort to increase awareness. Any new members are welcome and encouraged, along with any donation or support. Charter High Communications and The CHAT have high hopes and expectations for what will seem to be a beautiful event.

There is a certain greasy truth in numbers ‘Healthy’ foods contain fat lies Troy Bottom NEWS EDITOR

When someone says “wow that cheeseburger is so fattening,” it is usually brushed off as the smell of the intoxicating meat. However, being told the exact number of calories and fat you are consuming might just force you to drop that burger and nice side of fries. Though, this isn’t the case for some who are not at all fazed by the recent trend of fast food chains releasing precise information of their cuisine. “I already knew the risks and effects fast food has on my body so I have always been cautious of consuming it and making sure it was in moderation,” stated junior Nikki Brito. “Fast food is just there when you need a quick bite to eat. With everything that tastes good there’s always some health risk, so seeing exactly the health risks it doesn’t really play a factor with me at least.” Corporations such as McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy’s all began an honest and revealing policy to display menu items’ full nutrition values where customers can clearly see due to past lawsuits against the franchises for “making them obese”. A recent case in May in New York made headlines as two obese teenage girls, both topping over 270 pounds, sued McDonalds for their obesity and health conditions. Headlines across the nation exploded such as “teenagers sue Ronald” and “McDonalds supposedly force teenagers to obesity”. The most shocking fact is that the two teenage girls actually won the case as the courts proclaimed that McDonalds was too secretive about the true substance of their food. After this, fast food chains snapped into gear and became an almost open book to all customers. After McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken was the first company to put the amount of calories next to each item choice on their menus. Soon after, other restaurants followed suit. According to the FDA, sales of the combined major fast food chains that implemented this policy dropped sales by a stun-

ning 12% in the first month. Some experts contribute the drop to the crunching of money near the holiday season, since the policy was put in place early November; while others say it was because of the now publicized nutrition values of each product. One person that contributed to the 12% drop was junior Brandon Navas. “I like the way I look and feel. So, when I saw how much fat a Big Mac had I quickly put it down. Seeing all the facts of what I was eating scared me off a bit,” added Navas.

Cartoon By: Emily Semander

Some big fast food products such as the Big Mac and Whopper seemed to not really shock customers, but the big jawdropper was the nutrition facts on fast food salads. Three salads had nutrient facts greater than other burger or chicken options. For example, the McDonalds Southwest Salad has more calories (450) than a 5 piece chicken strips meal (390) and is also equivalent to the McRib in the amount of sodium (450mg). This stat might really affect the McDonalds consumers that dine on their “healthy” salad products. The numbers may not impact some students but to some. However, seeing the number of fat and calories listed might be too much to digest, and fast food restaurants will suffer from a loss in customers.

In a world where body image practically defines you, our society has desperately scrambled and clung to be a part of the latest dieting fad. From labels dubbed South Beach Diet, to supermarket aisles dedicated to the word “organic”, syntax has become key in this manipulating, customerhungry industry. Naturally, consumers are blinded to not only the many tricks played at our expense, but also the countless dieting myths so many people fall for. Unfortunately, this involves the perception of the word “healthy” to be faulty, but with a few simple realizations, it is easy to steer clear to a genuinely healthy diet and lifestyle. • Break free from the label: A picture says a thousand words, or so they say. What a lot of us do not realize is that these companies, for the most part, have a choice to display whatever they like on the label. However, this also includes being able to so conveniently exclude the excruciating truth. Just because a label claims to be ‘light’, ‘low sodium’, ‘low sugar’ or all of the above, doesn’t necessarily mean it is good for you. These terms are subjective, and reality is, the majority of consumers don’t know what foods these terms are referencing or being compared to. If you’re hungry for the correct nutrition information, simply flip the product- the nutrition label on the back is one hundred percent honest. • Jumbo size, jumbo problems: Just because something is healthy, doesn’t mean one can eat a lot of it. A good diet is equivalent to a balanced diet, meaning the consumer can eat from all sides of the food pyramid, as long as proper portions are kept. When portions grow however, so do the problems. For example, a ‘jumbo’ bottle of ‘real’ fruit juice. Yes, fruit juice can be a source of the daily servings of fruit and complex vitamins, but drinking 32 ounces of it in one sitting packs on an overload of calories and a mountain of sugar for the body to process. Finding a surprisingly

Good juice: The cafeteria offers supposedly healthy drinks. Photo By: JP Dussan

delicious healthy food item can be exciting, but consumers should always keep in mind serving sizes and caloric intake. • Au Naturel: There is no better supplement than the food itself. In other words, plain and simple, your body will receive what you put in it, no matter what the box claims. If you want your daily serving of protein, look for a piece of meat or a can of beans- not a fluffy, caramelized ‘protein bar’. Looking for some Vitamin C? Eat an orange, or drink some guava juice- turn your back on the famous ‘real’ fruit gummies. Nothing compares to food in its natural state. A human being’s diet can be described within a range of adjectives: complex, delicate, crucial. However, everyone can agree that a healthy one is definitely important. When it comes to being healthy, every consumer should take the initiative and take the matter into their hands. Who else better to read the label or add up the calories, than the person who’s stomach will have to deal with it later?

As the year is coming to an end, the date December 12, 2012 (12/12/12) marks the last repetitive date for the millennium. The next repetitive date will be January 1st 2101, which is about 100 years away. Last year, there was so many celebrations and planned weddings for the date 11/11/11; this year was no different. Many couples around the world have chosen this day to get married. Stores offered deals that lasted for the day only, such as Krispy Kreme Donuts which offered customers who bought a dozen donuts another dozen donuts for free. However, there have been some people who firmly believe that this date would mark the beginning of the end of the world! December 12, 2012 is considered to be a very good day. The number 12 is associated with enjoyment, expression, and rebirth according to numerologist Scott Petullo from CBS. The idea that time runs out is a misnomer. Theirs was a long calendar. There is nothing in Mayan literature about the end of time or the world. It’s just the end of one long-cycle calendar and start of a new one.” Freshman Andrew Kelleher commented, “I don’t believe the world is going to end because there isn’t enough factual information to convince me.” You may just want to reconsider any extreme 12/21/12 plans you might have. It would probably best to continue on life as usual, do your holiday shopping, spend time with friends and family, don’t worry about constructing a survival fort or going out with a bang. Happy surviving, see you in the New Year!

May 21, 2011 Many may recall driving down the highway and seeing red and yellow billboards declaring that Judgment Day was approaching and the world was going to end on May 21, 2011. Harold Camping, a speaker for Family Radio in California, claimed the world would end at 6 PM that day. Camping based his prediction on his reading and heightened understanding of scripture. He spent enormous amounts of money campaigning his message and managed to convince scores of people. But at 6:01 PM when people realized the world wasn’t doomed he began reforming his prediction for October 21, 2011, which also didn’t occur…(www.time.com)

A Rising Star in … Beach Tennis? Brett Alayon STAFF WRITER

Senior Jesse Ascunce at PPCHS has a unique talent for a sport we don’t see too often: beach tennis. This isn’t similar to your typical tennis with a low net and hard courts. Instead, this sport is played on a 16 meters by 8 meters area of sand with a net height of 5 feet 7 inches; much smaller than a regular tennis court. The sport was invented just over 30 years ago and is played all around the world today. “It is an amazing sport. I have only been playing since May, but I fell in love with it immediately,” Jesse said. Jesse usually plays at Dania Beach, where his coach first introduced him to the sport. The beach tennis star has traveled to Deerfield Beach and other beaches to compete in tournaments. He has even accomplished making his name known to many profes-

sional beach tennis players around the world. Jesse currently ranks as number one in U.S. high school seniors. Jesse recalls “winning 3rd place with a dive” in his most recent tournament as his favorite moment in playing the sport so far. His plans include competing in the next Frank Congemi IFBT World Cup event in May 2013 and training for the 2016 Olympics, when beach tennis will be a trial sport. Jesse said, “The competition is pretty tough out there especially because I face off against the top guys in the world.” Jesse’s mindset every time he goes on the beach is to crush his opponents and give his all for the whole match. Beach tennis has benefitted Jesse as well as his younger sister Julie, who plays tennis for the school team. “What my brother does is really different and every time I watch him play he really impresses me,” she said. Jesse’s drive to win and the support behind him has helped him be successful in beach tennis. He stated that he’ll continue playing beach tennis “until he gets tired of it.” The way he is going now, Jesse may never want to stop playing this unique sport.

New Orleans’s “Pelican” Problem COMMENTARY BY: David Nabors SPORTS EDITOR

The New Orleans Pelicans. Every time the name comes up, it gets more and more difficult to say with a straight face. It might be more understandable if it were the name of a senior country club whose members fished and played bingo on weeknights; but recently, the name made national headlines when it was announced that it will become the new name for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets franchise starting in the 20132014 season. Right when the franchise was poised to return to prominence, it spontaneously decided to change their name to one that will become the most laughable in American professional sports. In the NFL, the Saints are struggling. With great young talent across the board and two of the top ten picks in this year’s draft performing well (Guard Austin Rivers and Center Anthony Davis), this was supposed to be the season that in a different sport, the Hornets would show their fan base just how bright the future really is. They desperately needed the boost after the best player in the young franchise’s history, point guard Chris Paul, requested to be traded last year. But what great player with any self-dignity wants to spend their career playing for a team named after a useless water bird with a pouch in its beak? “I don’t think they should do it,” said senior and NBA fan Wade Meade. “”It’s a bad move for a team that is already struggling this season.” It’s true that the hornet has no connection to the city of New Orleans, but so what? When used in conversation, the word hornet has a vicious connotation attached to it. The Pelicans? It makes one think more of a day at the pond. There aren’t many toddlers around who would be the least bit afraid of a pelican. So, out of nowhere, and for no

reason, New Orleans has kicked itself in the rear again. Are there really any wizards in the Washington, D.C. area? Has anyone ever heard of a bull in Chicago? And why on earth would the jazz music genre have anything to do with the state of Utah? The names for many franchises around the league are nonsensical, but none of them are as comedic as the Pelicans. “I think it’s silly,” said senior Omari White. “I heard that they feel the ‘Hornets’ has no connection to the team’s location but ‘Pelicans’ is not a name that a professional sports team should take on. No one will take them seriously.” It’s not right to diminish their on-court achievements, but honestly, who doesn’t feel bad for the New Orleans fan who, in an attempt to break the ice at a social gathering, has nothing to say but: “So, did anyone catch that Pelicans game last night?” The Pelicans do have plenty of things to look forward to in the coming seasons. They have young talent and are based in a city that for the past seven years has still been slowly recovering from one of the worst national disasters in American history. So, look for them to make some respectable playoff runs in the coming season, regardless of their ridiculous mascot. Pelican nation, stand up.

As winter blows into season, people everywhere are snuggling with loved ones around the fire, drinking hot cocoa, and making a wish list to a long-time childhood hero. It’s the time of year when everyone is feeling generous and gives to those who don’t have anything. Winter brings safety and joy to little boys and girls everywhere, but the snow brings charity. This charitable feeling in the air has affected the lives of former University of Miami and University of Florida alumni, Andre Johnson and Tim Tebow. Andre Johnson, a wide receiver for the Houston Texans of the NFL has organized a charity funded shopping spree for 12 children. Each child, ages 8-16, was taken to Toys “R” Us and had 80 seconds to pick out as many toys as they could for themselves, their siblings, and their relatives. These children chosen Graphic By: Armando Urena have suffered from parental abuse at some point in their life and are now living with extended families. At the end of the 80 seconds, the total cost of all the toys was a whopping $19, 521. After the spree, Johnson also surprised 800 kids at a Houston elementary school with Christmas presents. “It makes me feel good that people who have lots of money use it for things that won’t lose value over time,” said Sophomore Wesley Haber. On Saturday, December 1st, a terrible car crash occurred in Albany, New York. Four teens, all 17 years old, were leav-

ing a sports game when they were struck by a drunk driver. Two of the teens were killed, and the other two were hospitalized. The two that were hospitalized were Matt Hardy and Bailey Wind. On Monday, December 3rd, friends of Hardy and Wind started the twitter trends #TebowCallMatt and #MissyCallBailey. Nearly two hours after it became a national trend, Hardy got a call from a very special person. Tebow got the message after over 50,000 people in two days retweeted #TebowCallMatt. Tebow called Hardy, and brought joy to this hospitalized teenager. Missy Franklin, the Olympic gold medalist swimmer in the London Games, got a hold of #MissyCallBailey after it was retweeted 16,000 times. She tried calling Wind, but had to leave a voicemail instead. She said on Twitter that she would still like to talk to Wind. “I think it’s a good and different act of kindness,” says sophomore Alex Orta. “I think it’s pretty cool that they care about the community and their fans.” Charity comes in many forms, whether it’s talking to a long-time fan or giving some money to those who need it. These sport idols have influenced those they helped. They brought joy to the faces of children and lifted the spirits of those in tragic accidents. These stars have set an example that others should follow during the holiday season. Charitable feelings have grown this holiday season due to these great role models and superstars.

The end has finally come to what has been one of the most exciting and surprising college football seasons of recent years. With all regular season games now finished, fans can now look forward to 35 bowl games. The number one ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who started the season unranked, are all set to take on the number two ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship on January 7th in Miami. Notre Dame is led by their senior All-American linebacker Manti Te’o, who astonished fans around the country with his quickness, aggression, and football intelligence. Junior quarterback AJ McCarron has led the Crimson Tide to a one-loss season and looks to defeat Notre Dame for its second straight BCS National Championship. “As a fan of college football, I can’t wait to watch this game,” said junior Jake Jacobs. “I’m excited to see how Notre Dame’s offense will respond to Alabama’s number one ranked defense.” University of Florida and Florida State University both made it to BCS bowl games, which happen to be two of the most elite bowl games in college football aside from the national championship. The Florida Gators will be taking on the Louisville Cardinals on January 2nd in the esteemed Sugar Bowl. The Gators, led by sophomore quarterback Jeff Driskel and senior running back Mike Gillislee, look to cap off a great season, losing only one game to the top ranked Georgia Bulldogs. However, this will be no easy task. The Cardinals won the Big East and finished the season with only two losses. They are led by quarterback breakout star Tommy Bridgewater, who led the Big East in passing efficiency. With the Gator’s strong defense, and the Cardinal’s strong offense, this game is

sure to be competitive from start to finish. Another Florida team playing in a BCS bowl game is Florida State University. They will be taking on the surprising underdogs, Northern Illinois Huskies, in the Orange Bowl on January 1st. FSU’s win in the ACC Championship over Georgia Tech earned them a spot in the game, while Northern Illinois becomes the first MidAmerican Conference team to ever receive a BCS bowl bid. Most analysts do not believe the Huskies should be in a BCS bowl game and are not giving the Huskies any shot at winning on New Year’s Day, but Huskies junior quarterback Jordan Lynch just says that his team will use the criticism as motivation. “I think this game might be closer than some people think, but FSU is definitely going to come out with the victory,” said junior Noah Levy, a Seminoles fan. “Their quarterback play and defensive line are going to eventually overpower the Huskies.” The Seminoles will be leading a high powered throwing attack with senior EJ Manuel at quarterback and will also have to rely on their stingy defense led by junior defensive end Bjoern Werner. With a season as thrilling as the one we had this year, there is no doubt that this bowl season is going to be special. Bowl games starts on December 15th and go all the way through January 7th, so be ready for three weeks of excitement.

Victoria Gonzalez, Senior

Prince Ali has emerged as one of the young stars on the boys’ basketball team. Ali, who just moved into the South Florida area from New York, has had no trouble fitting in to the Jaguar system. Only a sophomore, Ali has been a pleasant surprise for the Jags with his prolific scoring and rebounding. At the forward position, Ali has impressed fans and coaches alike with his unique scoring ability and unselfishness to find the open shooter. “We are going to need to keep getting better if we want to reach our goal of winning the state championship,” said Ali. “I know we can do it, as long as we play as a team and execute our plays.” Although he is still a long way off from graduation, Ali has already begun thinking about the idea of playing after college and receiving a scholarship. He is unsure of his college plans at this point, but anyone would agree that the future is bright for this young star.

Victoria Gonzalez is a three-sport athlete; she plays basketball, softball, and volleyball. As captain of a young varsity basketball team, Gonzalez has a lot riding on her shoulders. She is looked at as a leader on a team of seven. Gonzalez is a senior, making this year her last season with the Jaguars and she wants to make it a good one. She started playing basketball in 6th grade, despite her parents’ disapproval of the sport. She attended Christian Dade at the time. As shooting guard, she has developed an excellent shot outside the paint. She strives to be a good leader to lead her team to work harder and win games. “I think we are doing alright,” said Gonzalez. “We have a really young team. If we really wanted to we can go to regionals if we set our minds to it.” Gonzalez has already made a commitment to go to Palm Beach Atlantic for college to play softball. She hopes to shine there, just like how she has shined at PPCHS. After senior graduation in May, Palm Beach Atlantic will have a new star: Victoria Gonzalez.

Justin Satchell, Senior

After making the Sun-Sentinel’s Broward all-county second team last year, senior forward Justin Satchell is looking to improve himself and make a mark on the national recruiting scene this year. Many Division I universities thus far have expressed interest in the Jaguars leading scorer and main three-point threat, some of which include Florida International University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Georgia Southern, and the University of Miami. Over the summer, Satchell played for the A.A.U. team Gold Coast and frequently faced some of the best players and teams in the country. Standing at 6’6”, Satchell is heavily depended on for rebounding and scoring for the Jags. He is looking forward to another successful season, but has not provided any insight on what his future plans might be. “I’m not planning on signing my letter of intent until after the season,” says Satchell. “For now I want to focus on winning games, and after the season I’ll sit down and make my decision.” Whatever program does land Satchell will be getting a talented prospect that is one of the top high school players in south Florida. Luckily, Pines Charter fans still have another few months to watch him play.

Samantha Provenzano, Freshman

It all started when Samantha Provenzano’s father brought home a basketball and a hoop. From there she began playing, practicing, and perfecting her game as an aspiring 4th grade girl. Samantha prides herself on strong ball handling skills and quickness. “The toughest obstacle for me is my height. I have to be real careful to not be swatted so I use my speed to create open shots for me,” Provenzano added. Even though she’s younger than almost every player she plays against, Provenzano has proved to be a very solid point guard already at the high school level. The team has struggled a bit early on this season, but luckily for the Pines Charter basketball program, Provenzano has plenty of good years ahead of her. Outside of school Provenzano plays on her travel team and works hard on her game to be the best point guard she can be. Her idol is NBA athlete Dwyane Wade on the Miami Heat and she tries to pick up some of his moves by imitating and implementing them in her game. Before games you can find Provenzano listening to her pregame playlist and eating her favorite pregame meal, pasta. Before you can blink, she’s on the hardwood ready to go, ready to play and put on a show.

Haanif Cheatham, Sophomore Sophomore Haanif Cheatham is on the varsity basketball team and is also one of the most talented athletes PPCHS has to offer. This 6’4 guard has been playing basketball since he was six years old and his love for the game still grows every day. There is no question Haanif is ready to do big things as part of a high-powered team and in his mind, they are ready to make the next step. “After last year, our team is definitely pumped to win districts and move on to states,” he said. Haanif is a transfer student from West Broward HS and he knew he couldn’t give up on the opportunity at hand. Just weeks ago, after the Jags suffered a devastating loss in their first home game of the season; Haanif and the rest of the team were certainly not pleased. “With the huge crowds we have been getting our home games, we shouldn’t be letting them down. Everyone has high expectations and we are ready to do big things.” Speaking of big things, Haanif has already received offers from UM and USF in just his second year of high school. He believes he can help the team best in rebounding and sharing the basketball by recording multiple assists. With the unselfishness of Haanif and the rest of the team, the Jags varsity team will be one to remember. Photo’s By: Johmi Vargas

Jimmy Valvano: A Coach Never Forgotten

Just a few weeks ago, an annual NCAA basketball tournament called the “Jimmy V Classic” took place in Madison Square Garden. “Jimmy V”, whose official name was James Valvano, was an incredible college basketball player and coach filled with a heart and desire to win. The impact he had on the game was tremendous. “Jimmy V touched so many people’s hearts all throughout his life,” sophomore basketball player Alex Orta stated. “He is an inspiration to anyone who hears his story.” Valvano played at Rutgers Univeristy as a star point guard in 1967 where he led his team to a successful season. Jimmy V was named Senior Athlete of the Year at Rutgers in 1967. Valvano was certainly more known for his sound presence as an incredible basketball coach on and off the court. His 19-year career as a head coach included stops at Johns Hopkins, Iona, Bucknell, and North Carolina State. With a career record of 346-212, Valvano was twice voted ACC coach of the year. His greatest achievement of all came in 1983 when his NC State team won a National Championship on a last-second shot. Today, millions

look back to that game remembering Jimmy V’s enthusiasm on the court after winning his lone National Title. Towards the end of Valvano’s coaching career, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. With the sudden and unfortunate news, Valvano’s legacy became even greater as he displayed courage throughout his cancer

treatment just like he did on the court. Shortly after he was diagnosed, he gave a famous speech at the inaugural ESPY Awards presented by ESPN. In his speech, Valvano announced the creation of “The V Foundation for Cancer Research” which is still standing today to find a cure for cancer. Graphic By: Armando Urena

“To me, there are three things we all should do every day,” Valvano famously proclaimed in a speech. “We should do this every day of our lives. Number 1 is laugh, number 2 is think, and number 3 is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day.” Less than two months after one of the most touching speeches in sports history, Jimmy Valvano passed away at the age of just 47 years old. Six years after his death, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Hame in 1999. World History teacher Mr.Curry said, “The passing of Mr.Valvano was truly heartbreaking. I will never forget that speech he made and his legacy will surely remain forever.” The Jimmy V Foundation has raised roughly $70 million and counting for cancer research over the years. Today, we look back on Valvano’s outstanding life as a basketball coach and truly courageous person. Jimmy V’s motto of “never giving up” still impacts so many people around the world as we will never forget Jimmy Valvano.

If the world comes to its untimely end on December 21, the year of 2012 would have been the last year that anyone listened to a new album, watched a funny television show, or went to the movie theater for a thrilling new release. Years of music and cinematography will have come to an end with the last new releases of 2012. If this is the short period of time we have to reminisce on the entertainment industry, we

might as well remember the good ones. So far 2012 has been a harmonious year for breakout pop artists and their continual musical talent. Beloved singers including Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, P!nk, Rihanna and Taylor Swift all came out with new albums, their songs becoming instant hits (www. albumoftheyear.org). Sophomore Hayley O’Brien said, “I think that the best album of the year is Take me Home by One Direction because the songs are really catchy and upbeat. Apocalyptic and World Ending Jams Anthony Kelleher STAFF WRITER

According to the Mayan conspiracy, the world is supposed to end on December 21, 2012. Several song artists use the thought of the world ending as central themes within their music. Sometimes these songs are just about the world ending, or they can also be songs that have a greater meaning in context. Freshman Alejandra Valladares says, “Even though I do not believe that the world is ending, I feel that these songs have a deeper meaning to them. They teach you to live your life to the fullest because you may never know what could happen to you.” Here are a few songs with catchy lyrics coining the exaggerated end of the world conspiracy. 1. Till the World Ends - Britney Spears

Pop sensation Britney Spears in her song, Till the World Ends talks about how you should live your life to the fullest and be happy every day. In her song, she says to live every moment like it is your last. The song also encourages you to dance and party until the world ends and to enjoy life in general. 2. Die Young - Ke$ha New artist Ke$ha in her song, Die Young talks about how you should act crazy and rebellious because the world is ending. The song is about a couple who acts wild and crazy because the world is coming to a close. In her song she uses phrases such as “Young hearts, out our minds” and “Runnin’ till we out of time” to convey her message about being rambunctious right before the end of everything. 3. 2012 - Jay Sean Artist Jay Sean in his song 2012 wants to show his listeners that they should party like it’s the end of the world. The song encourages people to live carefree and not to have any worries or stress present in their life because it will not matter after the world ends. The song is very upbeat and it is perfect for any party; possibly one on the night before the end of it all.

4. Apocalypse Please – Muse This song is a warning about how the world is going to end soon. The lyrics are repetitive and convey the simple message that there is an emergency. Although the lyrics do not specify what is happening that causes the emergency, based on the tone of the lyrics and the lyrics itself, the emergency is global and huge. 5. Live Like You Were Dying - Tim McGraw This song conveys the message of living every moment as if it’s your last. It encourages listeners to do the things that they have always wanted to but never had the opportunity to accomplish. Live Like You Were Dying is an inspirational song that can touch anyone’s heart. Whether or not the end of the world will truly occur in our lifetime, all of these songs mentioned are great for valuing the life we have every day. Junior Fizza Nagi said, “I like that there are songs about the end of the world because you never know what could happen and if the world could actually end.” We should enjoy our life and everything that it has to offer, because any day can be our last day on Earth. The end may be closer than you think.

Earlier this year the first in the trilogy, The Hunger Games, released on March 23, was instantly applauded for its faithful portrayal of the book. The movie enticed fans of the book and created new ones through the clever story line. Part 2, Mocking Jay, is expected to be released next year. The Dark Knight

Rises began the transition from Batman to a possible new hero and received a lot of media attention not just for the special effects and Bale’s performance, but also for the ensuing violence that occurred at the midnight premiere. The Dark Knight Rises, similar to the other new Batman movies, did well in the box office and left fans excited for the rise of a new protector of the streets of Gotham City. There and Back Again: The Hobbit hits theatres Victoria Alvarez

ENVIRONMENTAL/HEALTH EDITOR

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the prequel to the famous trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Written by J. R. R. Tolkien, the book, and now cinema, takes place in Middle-earth. The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a small hobbit who is about to alter his life in an adventure to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from a Smaug, a large and feared dragon. In the movie, Bilbo will experience new and exciting things on his quest; things that he would have never seen if he had remained in the Shire, his hometown. Leaving his happy, careless and rural-surrounded life in the Shire, Bilbo is embarks on a quest surrounded by sinister territory. The world outside of the Shire is much different than what he is used to, and Gandalf the Grey is ready to show him that. On the adventure, Bilbo and Gandalf will be

accompanied by thirteen dwarves, led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Okanshield. Their quest will bring them into the Wild; pulling them through hard times, treacherous lands, and creatures that Bilbo had never encountered before. Goblins, Orcs, Wargs and even Sorcerers will play roles in the movie, throwing speed bumps at the group’s journey. Trying to get to East and to the wastelands of Lonely Mountain, Bilbo will meet Gollum- a vital character in the trilogy that would change the course of Bilbo’s life forever. “It’s exciting to know that the movie will show how Bilbo and Gollum first meet. In the Lord of the Rings, they only showed glimpses of how they met. But now, we’re going to have the full encounter, the full vision of how it all started,” said junior Deanna Alford. While they are alone on the shores of an underground lake, Bilbo somehow gets the famous gold ring, Gollum’s “precious”

gold ring. Though he doesn’t know it yet, the ring possesses powers and ties to the Middle-earth that will change everyone’s future. In The Hobbit, Bilbo will embark on great adventures, change his own life, and ruin Gollum’s happiness. The ring holds true to the story of The Lord of the Ring’s, and this movie is just the beginning of the adventure. This unexpected journey will change the future of Middle-earth, foretelling the movies that all viewers have seen years ago. “I’m excited to see The Hobbit,” said junior Alden Diaz, “I’ve been a fan of The Lord of the Rings for a very long time, and I think it’s great that they’re finally showing fans and viewers how it all began. All questions are going to be answered, and I have a feeling that a few surprises will be in the movie as well.”

With the new and improved iPad 4th Generation and the iPad Mini, both retailing at $499 and $329 respectively, these items are sure to be sweeping into many homes this holiday season.

iPhone 5

• As of this past September, the phone market lit up when the iPhone 5 was released, and the hysteria behind it is still evident. Many students across Charter are all hoping that they will find an iPhone 5 waiting for them at home. “I want to get the iPhone 5 now since, I have the iPhone 4, so I feel like it is time for me to upgrade to the 5,” says sophomore, Taylor Alfonso.

Whatever the item maybe, technology is a gift that will be greatly appreciated by anyone who receives it. As the holidays creep closer, the last few moments are upon you to find the perfect gift for those around us.

Chromebook offers light, versatile alternative Anthony Kelleher STAFF WRITER

The holidays are just around the corner and people want the latest and greatest electronic gadgets that money can buy. Samsung and Google partnered up and created the Chromebook Laptop, an ultra-portable sleek laptop for everyday use. The Chromebook can be taken anywhere and can be used everywhere, providing great versatility for all users. Some of the features of the Samsung Chromebook are its size - it is less than .7 inches thick, it weighs less than 2.5 pounds, its fast technology allows its user to boot up their laptop in less than 10 seconds, it updates its software automatically, and has built in security. The Chromebook can be put in a backpack, briefcase or purse. This laptop can be used by the entire family because of its versatility and simple-to-use technology. The Chromebook also offers

an easily switch between users providing everyone their own files, apps, and settings. One of the unique features of the Chromebook is that it does not run on Mac or Windows software. Tech-savvy holiday season taking over Brianna Cha-Kim STUDENT LIEF EDITOR

As the month of December rolls in, PPCHS begins preparations for a precious holiday gift: winter break. Students are beginning their Christmas/Hanukkah lists and starting the hunts for gifts for others. Through television advertisements and technological advances, companies have new ways of advertising and selling their products. Back in the day students would have less technology-involved expectations for gifts. Students would ask for board-games, shoes, clothes- items of a more simplistic manner. Today parents are bombarded with requests for the new the iPhone 5, the latest updated Macbook laptop, a new flat screen television, or the newest videogames. Not only are these items incredibly more expensive than more “standard” simple gifts, but also contribute to the greater gap from generation to generation. Technology has altered the definition of gifts even for newborn babies. There are now toys with a protected opening/pouch for the parent’s phone in order for the child to watch a movie without having to hold the phone. There are a significantly greater amount of toys that help to educate children nowadays also. During the holiday season, Toys R Us advertises all these new tech-savvy gifts for kids of all ages- some

of which even appeal to high school students. Senior Brandon Rosen said, “Nowadays kids don’t want anything that’s not expensive. I am asking for the iPhone 5 and basically, anything that has a digital pulse.”

Widespread growth of online shopping also affects this year’s holiday season. Some people no longer go out in the madness of holiday shopping. These online shoppers no longer have to face long lines, crazy traffic jams, and the discomfort of shopping among a huge crowd. Senior Ashley Klapper said, “Many people are getting caught up in the ease of online shopping. It may seem silly to some but I actually enjoy being in the crowds. It makes me feel like the holidays are really here.” There are technological advances within America’s desired gifts, means of purchasing the gifts, and celebrating the holidays. Each year as the nation becomes more and more tech-friendly the celebration of holidays will slightly change. Technology has also impacted pet-lover’s gifts for their beloved animals. Instead of a squeeze toy or simple stuffed animals, pets are now being presented with items of technological significance. Technology has never been more prosperous than recent days; it consumes the lives of many teens. Nowadays, singers and superstars are being exposed through social networking sites based upon their talent. The fame being produced from this generation continues to amaze fans everywhere. The reality TV shows that assist these prodigies in becoming future stars have created a fan base all over the country. The Voice and X Factor are two of the most popular talent searches in America. With celebrities being the judges of these shows, they have gained an abundance of viewers and followers. The Voice merely Cartoon by: Emily Semander focuses on the vocals, tones and pitches of each individual contestant, en the opportunity to vote for their favorin contrast to the X Factor which searches ite contestant. After the live performances, for the entire package. Since these shows each contestant has a number that fans at are primarily aired live, the way to Vote home that can text or call in order to gain and stay affiliated with them is through votes, however there might be some techtechnology. This unfortunately becomes a nical problems with this procedure. In our

current generation many people feel obligated to have a savvy phone, computer, or device that allows them to participate in these events, yet there is still an enormous amount of students who do not have access to these computer ran devices. “Due to the fact that I don’t have an iPhone or computer at home, I will never have the chance to partake in the challenges that the contestants propose on X Factor. It’s unfortunate,” exclaims senior Brianna Rimi. Even though the T.V shows appear on television fans are given a limited opportunity to participate. All of the contestants on both The Voice, and X Factor connect with their fans through social networking sites such as Instagram, and Twitter. By narrowing their connection to fans via technology, they aren’t reaching out to everyone.

These shows specifically demonstrate the transition our society has reached. Junior Carla Flyte says, “All of the new technology being created has affected our society positively, but has left most of our voices muted. Just because I don’t have a phone that has all of the applications these shows run through, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to have an active participation within them.” Although technology has had a tremendous positive influence on this transition of our generation, there are still some flaws that haven’t been acknowledged. The contestants on these reality TV shows are most likely going to limit themselves to a selected amount of fans. Most of us can answer yes to the fact that there is an enormous amount of people on these social sites, but the rest of society should not be ignored. The way these TV shows are networking through technology has become a “safety net” for them. With the direction they are leaning towards the results of each show can be tempered, and a fair winner may not be produced.

The following are letters sent by students who read the last CHAT issue and emailed their opinions. Feel free to contact us with any concerns at chc_ppchs@yahoo.com .

Dear CHAT Staff,

Dear CHAT Staff,

The sixth issue of the CHAT newspaper was previously published. I enjoyed many of the stories in the issue. Some of the topics that were covered were a little “touchy.” I thought that the aspects of some of the stories being possibly offensive to some people made the stories very interesting. One example is the story that was about all the sports teams that have stood out in Pembroke Pines Charter history. If someone who was on a sports team in the past years felt that they did a good job playing, and they were not included in the section with their year’s team, then they would probably not be too happy about their team being excluded from the paper. Also, I found several different formatting and grammatical errors throughout the issue that did not take too much searching.

I’m not sure if there is a reason for this happening, but throughout the issue most of the stories are indented and some of them are not. As an example, all of the stories on page 14 are not indented, except for the story all the way at the top. This error was very noticeable, even if you were not reading the story you could see the duplication of the lines. The error took place on the first two lines of the article “Is your soft drink eating you?” and it pops out to the reader’s eye. Overall I had a good experience in reading the latest issue of the CHAT newspaper.

Sincerely, Dylan Carter (‘16)

I really enjoyed your sixth issue of your paper. I was especially intrigued by your technology section and found something special in each article. I thought the way the two articles about Microsoft and Apple were put together were great. The articles almost seemed to be pitted against one another and it was great to see the contrast: the successful Apple was the obvious winner with new innovations in store while the struggling Microsoft moves forward without its future CEO and with many serious changes ahead. These two companies are two of the most influential tech brands in the world and it’s great that you were able to concisely update the student body – nearly all carriers of some kind of Microsoft or Apple product – on the companies. The biggest article about technology and

Dear CHAT Staff,

would like to keep their sexual preference to themselves. I am glad that the staff would include a story like this because the news needs to be further spread. I for one would not have known about this had I not read the article. It really makes me wonder what type of questions I might have to answer by the time I start applying to colleges. I would be disappointed if there were questions on applications that would affect whether I got into a certain college that had to do with my personal life.

Sincerely, Nick Rivera (‘16)

In my opinion this month’s issue of the chat was my favorite by far. I think what really drew me in about this month’s issue were the topics. I thought the topics were relatable and appealing to the target audience. The article “Our past impacts who we are,” was so well written, and just overall a great article. I loved the part about the Throwback Thursdays – I thought it was a cute touch that related to the present. It was also an eye-opening and reminiscent article, which I loved. It was definitely one of my favorite articles that I have seen in The Chat this year. Another really good article in my opinion was the “Pre-Gaming and other dangerous deeds.” It was so shocking some of the things our generation does to have “fun” at parties – drinking Germ-X … seriously? I think that it’s so important to realize that you don’t need to do those crazy things to have fun, and they are really dangerous. It was a great article for a high school audi-

its effect on our inner IQ is arguably the most important in the entire paper, being an issue that every student throughout the school and throughout the nation is dealing with. I agree with the fact that reading is needed to stimulate our minds and that reading influences our overall creative and critical thinking skills. The article included good citing from a variety of reliable sources and included insightful commenting on the subject.

Variety I recently finished reading most of the articles in the new issue of the CHAT and as always I have found many stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. I really enjoyed “Charter volunteers as tribute,” “Pandora Law encourages equal rights for the music industry,” and “Hostess’s Twinkies: Gone.” However, none of these articles captivated me as much as one particular story. I am referring to the editorial “When is required information too much?” I am only a freshman and so I don’t entirely know about applying to colleges, but I do know that I have to agree with what the writer says. Colleges should be looking for good academics and many extra-curricular activities as opposed to personal things such as sexual orientation. Being a large supporter of LGBT I know some people

ence; hopefully it was eye-opening to other students too. Other than those two articles though I thought this month’s Chat was relevant and appealing to us students. The article about tattoos and piercings was definitely interesting to read and most certainly appealing to students. It’s an increasing fad to get tattoos now-adays, and many students are interested in that so I thought it was great that it was included in this month’s issue. The concert one too was also relevant – tis the season of concerts, and who doesn’t love a good concert? Anyway, I thought this month’s issue was great – the topics were interesting and the stories were well-written, so I thought it was job well done.

Journalism I Editorials:

It really is a wonderful life Commentary By: Emily Asaro FREELANCE WRITER

As children, we all remember running down the stairs in the morning anticipating the presents and festivities. As high school wears on we seem to lose that. The 6 year old child sitting in their pajamas at night wondering when Santa was coming has somehow become a thing of the past. When did we lose our love for the holidays? Joseph Levy, a freshman member of the Jewish Student Union (JSU), thinks that “Holidays lose their magic when you get older. You stop believing in Santa and realize that everything isn’t free.” Fantasy is a huge part of the holiday season. The mystic nature of Santa and his ability to fly around the world certainly adds to the thrill of Christmas. We also become old enough to not only receive, but buy presents. In doing

this we become aware of how expensive things can be. Another big part of the season is being surprised by what presents you get. “I think as you get older, you already have things you want, so the whole ‘opening presents in the morning’ excitement is gone and that is a big part of the holiday,” says Seda Makarova PPCHS Freshman. Knowing exactly what presents you are going to get does take some of the excitement out of guessing what you’ll receive, but you also get exactly what you wanted which is the main idea. As someone who spends the entire month of December adorning herself with Christmas themed jewelry, I cannot imagine losing holiday spirit. Our cynicism as we grow older blinds our view of the wonders of the holiday season. We forget the true intention of the holiday and begin to believe that people have no reason to be happier around the holiday season. Growing up creates a harsh view of the world that

we didn’t have as children. We are faced with things that sometimes cause us to become indifferent about the eminence of a holiday. Commercialism is also to blame. Sophomore Maegan Trinidad believes that, “rather than celebrating the religious implication of the holidays, most people become greedy because they want the newest products that are advertised as ‘perfect holiday gifts.’ ” To quote a line from Miracle on 34th street, “Christmas isn’t just a day, It’s a frame of mind.” The holiday season is intended to ignite the child inside you. To, even for just a month, be kinder to others than you would normally be. The emphasis should be on the happiness this season can bring others. It’s the season of giving and smiles.. One of my favorite classic Christmas movies, It’s a Wonderful Life, perfectly emphasizes this point. The main character in the movie, George Bailey contemplates

ending his life due to current turmoil that surrounded his life. His angel, Clarence, comes down to earth to visit him and show him what the world would be like without him. Through this he realizes that he truly had a wonderful life. Clarence reiterates this when he says “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” Each holiday season we should remember how lucky we are to be alive and to have the opportunity to touch the lives of others. We shouldn’t lose the holiday spirit with age, we should gain spirit. As we get older we should have a better understanding of our ability to make a difference in others’ lives. Our holiday season should be centered on that. Giving thanks and being generally happy that we all have the gift of life.
