MACLELLAN GYM “BIG MAC”

Maclellan Gymnasium is home to the four-time SoCon tournament champion Lady Mocs volleyball team. The 24-time Southern Conference champion Mocs wrestling team also call “Big Mac” home. The 4,177-seat gym is the former home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams before they moved across the street to McKenzie Arena in 1982. Maclellan Gym was built on campus in 1961 and was named after Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jardin Maclellan. Mr. Maclellan was a member of the Chattanooga Board of Trustees from 1935 until his death in 156. The gym houses offices and classrooms for the Health and Human Performance department. It features a main court, auxiliary court, weight room, aerobic equipment area and swimming and diving pool. Locker rooms for the Lady Mocs volleyball team and a team meeting room that includes furniture and a television is also housed inside “Big Mac.”

Prior to the 2009 season, the main floor was updated with its primary use for volleyball. With the Power-”C” logo in center, Chattanooga spelled out across the baselines and volleyballs on the corners, the Lady Mocs now have a true home-court advantage.

Academic excellence is a key focus of the Mocs under head coach Travis Filar. Volleyball has recorded a program-record eight student-athletes on the 2010 Fall Academic All-Southern Conference team. Last year, senior Courtney Barnes became a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV selection earning first team honors. The Chattanooga Mocs have an excellent Student Support Services department in place for all student-athletes. UTC has recently allocated even more resources to this unit and will have four full-time staff members prior to the start of the 2010 fall semester. Through the use of advisors, tutors, study halls and many other programs, Student Support Services is on hand to help each student-athlete reach his or her ultimate goal of earning a college degree. The $3.2 million Brenda Lawson Student Success Center opened in January 2009 and houses the Wolford Family Strength & Conditioning Center.

The newly completed $3.2 million Brenda Lawson Student-Athlete Success Center is one of the finest facilities of its kind in college athletics. The Center, located on Vine Street in the heart of campus, houses the Chattem Basketball Practice Facility and the Wolford Family Strength and Conditioning Facility. Also located in the Center are meeting and film rooms that are available for all Chattanooga athletic programs to use. Director of Athletic Performance Scott Brincks and his staff use the facility to increase the Lady Mocs volleyball team’s overall strength and conditioning level. Through rigorous offseason workouts, and programs to maintain peak performance during the season, the Lawson Center and Wolford Family Strength and Conditioning Facility will impact the Mocs’ performance on the field for years to come.

SPORTS MEDICINE FIRST-RATE CARE

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Sports Medicine Program provides prevention, care, and rehabilitation services for all student-athletes. UTC has two athletic training rooms that serve all athletic teams. Thanks to funding from Erlanger Hospital, the athletic training rooms are equipped with the most up-to-date rehabilitation equipment including a Biodex Isokinetic Unit, a Neurocom for balance testing and training, and a Trazer unit for functional rehabilitation. In addition, the Chattanooga Group, Inc., provides therapeutic modalities for use as both rehabilitation equipment and instructional devices for students enrolled in the Graduate Athletic Training Program.

The training room in McKenzie Arena serves the Mocs student-athletes with state-of-the-art equipment.

The Mocs have an excellent relationship with nearby Erlanger Hospital, providing top-quality care to all UTC student-athletes.

The Graduate Athletic Training Program at UTC plays a major role in providing certified athletic trainers to insure that student-athletes receive excellent care. The entry-level masters program is one of few programs in the country that allows students to earn a master’s degree while they gain eligibility to sit for the Board of Certification Exam. Members of the athletics department and the graduate program staff the athletic training rooms. They work together to insure quality health care for all Mocs student-athletes and quality academic instruction for athletic training students in the graduate program.

The Chattanooga athletics programs enjoy unparalleled media exposure. Located in a metropolitan area that includes over 500,000 people, the Lady Mocs are covered by the Chattanooga Times Free Press and the local contingent of television stations, including ABC (WTVC), CBS (WDEF) and NBC (WRCB). The three local sports talk programs on WGOW 102.3 FM, ESPN 105.1 FM and WDEF 1370 AM, also follow the team and discuss the season with head coach Travis Filar on a regular basis. GoMocs.com is the ultimate online destination for Lady Mocs fans with game stories, previews, features, postgame interviews and schedules. All Chattanooga home and road volleyball games can be followed via live statistics, so you are never missing a part of the action. MocsVision is a service that enables users to watch live and on-demand audio and video. Live video is available for all home games at Macllan Gym. All live events are subscription based on Chattanooga All-Access Travis Filar was introduced as the program’s sixth head coach in February.

Over the last five years, UTC has won 17 regular season and 19 tournament championships in the Southern Conference, far more than any other school during that time. After finishing in the Top-100 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup in 2009, the Mocs had their thirdbest showing at No. 136 in 2011. Here is a brief list of some of UTC’s major accomplishments in 2010-11.

Cross country’s Emmanuel Kirwa won his fourth conference race, third in the SoCon, and was the SoCon Runner of the Year for the third time.

The women’s golf team won its second-straight SoCon title and advanced to the NCAAs for the third year in a row.

The softball team won its fifth-straight SoCon Title and advanced to the finals of the NCAA Regionals for the first time.

Junior Stephan Jaeger was the SoCon Men’s Golfer of the Year for the second year in a row, leading the Mocs back to the NCAAs.

Sophomore Paula Passmore was the 2010 SoCon Volleyball Libero of the Year after leading the league with 5.45 digs per set.

Sophomore Jenna Nurik won the SoCon Sportsmanship Award and was a second team all-conference selection.

The Mocs wrestlers have won seven-straight SoCon titles and are riding a 35-match winning streak in league action.

Bailey Dewart returned from numerous injuries to earn the SoCon Ann Lashly Inspiration Award.

ACADEMICALLY

The Mocs’ student-athletes continue to have tremendous success in the classroom. Below are just a few of the Academic accolades UTC received last year: • The overall g.p.a. of the Mocs’ student-athletes has increased in each of the last six trems, culminating with a school-record 2.97 in the spring. • Over half of all UTC student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 gradepoint-average in each of the last four semesters. • Each member of the SoCon Champion women’s golf team made the Dean’s List in both the fall and spring semesters. • Wrestling had a 3.14 g.p.a. for the year, ranking No. 7 in the nation.

The Mocs graduated 53 student-athletes during at the summer, fall and spring commencement ceremonies in 2010-11.

Senior Courtney Barnes was three-time Academic All-District and the Chris Berry earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District recipient of the SoCon Bob McCloskey Insurance Graduate Scholarship. team and won the SoCon Outdoor 10000M race.

Senior David Moore became the 12th Moc in school history to be named Capital One Academic All-American.

Sophomore Jackson Tresnan was an ITA Scholar Athlete and led the team with 14 singles wins.

SOCIALLY The Chattanooga Mocs Athletics Department is heavily involved in community events throughout the year. UTC student-athletes are well represented in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Mocs are always involved with local projects such as canned food drives, the Freshman Move-In and other activities throughout Chattanooga.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) plans many of the Athletic Department’s community events. The Mocs also have a presence at Chattanooga’s Special Olympics events each year. The Mocs also host many events that engage the local community, such as the 2011 SoCon Basketball Championships.

WHAT’S A MOC? THE EVOLUTION OF THE MASCOT

THE ANSWER

For more than a decade, this question has puzzled many fans and observers of Chattanooga Athletics. The UTC Athletics Department changed logos in 1997, moving away from Native American imagery to a package of logos using railroad images, the nickname “Mocs,” and the Scrappy mascot. The new package emphasized UTC’s connection to Chattanooga and the city’s railroad heritage and incorporated the Tennessee state bird. The term “Moc” is short for “Mockingbird.” Mockingbirds are fiercely territorial creatures which protect their homes with courage, determination and skill. Those Introduced in 2008, the new-look Scrappy has attributes reflect the intellect, spirit a sharper and more modern feel, mirroring the growth and image of UTC Athletics. and character of UTC student-athletes and alumni. A Moc is a champion on the playing surface, in the classroom and, most importantly, in life.

SCRAPPY

Named after legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore, Scrappy, the Chattanooga mascot, is a fixture for the Mocs. A re-design in 2008 puts Scrappy in the image of the State Bird of Tennessee, a mockingbird. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down on a dog, cat or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird’s protected territory. Once described by “Late Night” host Jimmy Fallon as “a sledge-hammer wielding mockingbird with a heart of Blue & Gold,” Scrappy symbolizes that competitive passion.

WHY MOCS? Faced with politically sensitive issues and in need of a stronger core identity to help establish a strong brand as Chattanooga’s Team, the athletics department embarked on a comprehensive identity program in 1996. A new direction for the athletics identity was determined, moving away from the politically incorrect Native American Indian imagery. Several identities have been used in the past. With the old nickname “Moccasins,” a snake was used in the 1920s and an Indian was used until the year of major change in 1996. A moccasin shoe was even used in the 1980s. In 1996, it was decided to adopt the State Bird of Tennessee, the Mockingbird, as the core of the new identity, while incorporating the strong regional imagery of Chattanooga’s vast railroad history. The mascot “Scrappy” was born and a new emphasis was placed on the athletics department’s role in the region.

The committee also recognized the need Chattanooga Mocs Athletics. for the word “Chattanooga” to have a great emphasis in the logo. The nickname “Moccasins” was shortened to simply “Mocs.” Thus established, Chattanooga could rebuild its athletics programs and initiatives around this new identity. And rebuild it did. Quickly establishing the identity program in February 1997, combined with tremendous success in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, UTC had positioned itself to reach for the next level. From 1997 to 2007, the primary logo was the mascot, Scrappy, riding a train. The secondary logo features the front of a train with the word Mocs built into the logo. This logo is affectionately called the “Cowcatcher logo,” referring to the front lower grill of the train that helped push objects from the train tracks. In August 2007, officials at Chattanooga updated the school’s marks. A new C logo, the “Power C” as it has become known to fans and alums, was created as the primary mark and is emblazoned on the side of the football team’s helmets. The secondary marks were updated with a more modern look, and a new font, unique to the school, is now used on the text areas of the logos and marks. In September 2008, Scrappy was rebranded to better match the image of a mockingbird and reflect the rich tradition of our state, our city and our University. New marks of the head as well as a full body were released. The program has also been taking special efforts to stay true to its color palette— which includes navy blue and old gold.

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK “A New Direction” of Chattanooga volleyball begins in the 2011 season under the guidance of Travis Filar, who became the sixth head coach in the history of the program on February 17, 2011. He has brought a distinct vision built upon family into the program. Filar quickly changed the culture for the Mocs in the spring by focusing on communication on the court and building trust between the student-athletes. He has also brought in an experienced coaching staff in assistants Savanah Parra, Taylor Wittmer and volunteer Duane Hill. The young Mocs squad contains just one senior in Ellie Kuhn and returns seven players that held contributing roles a season ago. An incoming freshman class of Jessi Blackstock, Melissa Green and Kasey Talley along with the addition of sophomore setter Bridget Camacho from VCU and Chattanooga has depth at key positions.

SETTERS Everything runs through the setter and is one of the most influential positions on the court. A duo of sophomores in returner Tess Kosycarz and newcomer Bridget Camacho look to guide and direct the hitters on the offensive attack. “Our goal is to run a quick, fast-paced offense along the net,” stated Filar. “The competiveness between the two setters has been amazing during the camp. Our 6-on-6 scrimmages have been evenly matched showing that each of them are running their sides very effectively.” Kosycarz saw action in 22 matches last season backing up Bailee Chastain, who finished her career in the top 10 on the Mocs all-time assists list with 1,940. The Temecula, Calif., native compiled a team-leading 7.69 assists-per-set, while defensively registering a 1.73

digs-per-set average. “Tess has grown a lot from the coaching staff challenging her in the spring,” said Filar. “She worked hard this summer in improving her location and technical setting ability. She has used her voice to direct traffic and be a leader on the court.” One of the biggest additions to the Mocs team is Camacho, who assisted in running an effective 6-2 system at VCU as the squad went 9-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association to close the year. The Cumming, Ga., native appeared in 28 matches for the Rams and totaled 3.83 assists and 1.74 digs per set playing in the back row. “After running a slower-tempo offense at VCU, we are challenging Bridget to come back to one of her strengths coming out of high school, which was an uptempo offense,” said Filar. “She has built an excellent connection with the hitters during camp and is an effective defensive player.” Filar quickly turned an area that could have been a weakness coming out of the spring into a position of depth and strength for the Mocs. Chattanooga has two setters capable of starting and leading the team on the court. They will continue pushing each other competitively every day in practice.

OUTSIDE HITTERS

Junior Heather Parman and sophomore Jennifer Kuroski have been dynamic hitters for the Mocs during the preseason and bring experience to a vital position. They have stepped up and grown as outside hitters, as junior Meagan Ernd continues rehab following shoulder surgery in the spring. Junior Julie Barnes and sophomore Andrea Johnson along with freshman Jessi Blackstock provide depth on the outside. Parman competed in 30 matches last year and was the featured outside hitter for much of the season recording 2.18 kills per set. The Ooltewah, Tenn., native was an all-around player digging up 2.15 attacks per set. “Heather has worked really hard this summer and hits a lovely ball,” said Filar. “She is beginning to understand that you need to have other shots in your repertoire to go to when you are struggling or going up against double blocks. It has taken awhile, but she is now realizing that she can score just as easily by tipping or a deep roll shot and score with the same effectiveness.” The freshman season for Kuroski was all about learning to be consistent. She started off as a dominating player during the non-conference schedule by starting the first 13 matches with the highlight being a 19 kill performance against Illinois-Chicago. The Acworth, Ga., native finished with tying for the team-lead at 2.36 kills per set. “Jennifer has shown a lot of maturation like Heather as an outside hitter,” said Filar. “Realizing that she is going

JENNIFER KUROSKI to get a high-volume of swings and understanding the importance of moving the ball around the court by using different angles and shots has increased her effectiveness. She has provided a lot of big kills for us and decreased the number of errors from the spring.” The emergence of Ernd during the SoCon portion last year enabled for the Mocs to have two formidable outside hitters. The Munster, Ind., native notched 1.87 kills per set during the campaign, but an injury has slowed her progress so far this fall. “Once Meagan’s shoulder completely heals, I believe that she can have a presence as an attacker,” said Filar. “Right now, she has had an opportunity to focus and improve her back row play in passing and defense. Hopefully, she has the ability to swing at full speed soon.” Another player that has dealt with injuries is Barnes, who spent last year recovering from a knee injury and for the first time in almost two seasons is completely healthy. Blackstock is continuing to adjust to the game and could definitely be a contributor from either pin as a reserve. “Jessi has come in, asked a ton of questions and is learning on the go as a freshman,” said Filar. “She is an athletic attacker, who has the ability to play all-theway around once she adjusts to our system.” Parman and Kuroski have solidified themselves as threats on the outside through the process of being smarter hitters, but with Barnes, Blackstock and Ernd complementing them, the Mocs have options on the outside.

CHRISTINA TETER RIGHT SIDE The emergence of junior Christina Teter in the offseason has been important for the Mocs in having a go-to player on the right side. Sophomore Andrea Johnson has trained on the right side along with Blackstock. Teter became a force on the front row with her 6-2 frame in 2010 recording 1.85 kills and 0.71 blocks per set. “Christina became a go-to player from an attacking and blocking standpoint this spring,” said Filar. “She needs to continue growing by realizing that she can’t hit it hard every time. She is a dominant blocker for us because she picks a good spot and really presses over the net, creating a blocking presence every time she is in the front row. She has the potential to have a big, breakout year for us.” Johnson saw action last year in 15 matches primarily as a defensive specialist. She has trained on the right side to provide depth. She also contributed nine service aces last season. The Soddy Daisy, Tenn., native has worked hard all summer making great strides in becoming more physical and quicker. “Andrea has become an extremely steady passing and defending, while being one of our most aggressive and consistent servers” said Filar. “Our team can score a lot of points when she is serving, because her serve generally takes the opponent out of system. She is still coming around with her hitting and has taken advantage of the opportunities she has been given.”

Leading the team and middle is senior Ellie Kuhn, who has been the most consistent attacker for the Mocs in camp. She will fill the void left by Courtney Barnes, who paced the Mocs in kills the past two seasons. Sophomore Aneisha Christie and freshman Kasey Talley are going to be asked to step up and contribute on a regular basis in the middle. Kuhn registered 1.61 kills per set for Chattanooga, while connecting at a .257 rate. She has totaled at least 100 blocks in the past two seasons and enters the year eighth on the block assists chart with 223. “Ellie has done a tremendous job of leading with her voice and play as a senior with high expectations for this year,” said FIlar. “She has become technically better at blocking, which will help her be more of a presence in the middle. We are really excited to give her the ball as much as we can in transition, because she can be one of our most dominant attackers and has learned to better the ball if the set is not perfect.” Christie saw time in just one match last season, but the ability to train and further learn the position has been important. The Alpharetta, Ga., native has worked hard on becoming more of an offensive threat by working on her timing with the setters. “Aneisha is someone who has been really impressive in preseason camp,” said Filar. “Her energy, work ethic and strong communication on the court has caught the eyes of the coaches. When she is disciplined in her blocking, then she can be a very effective blocker at the net.” Not many freshmen can come in and be versatile, but Talley has the ability to play outside, middle blocker or right side. “Kasey is a very dynamic athlete that can control her body in the air,” said Filar. “She has effortless movement and is a great blocking presence. She is very driven on and off the court.”

The tradition of excellent play from the libero position for Chattanooga has continued with junior Paula Passmore, who was named the 2010 SoCon Libero of the Year. She dug up a conference-best 654 attacks, while compiling 5.45 digs per set. “Paula is always going to be that servant leader,” said Filar. “She is going to have a great relationship with everyone on the team through being positive and encouraging. She provides us with great stability in the back row from a passing and defending standpoint.” Freshman Melissa Green has been pushing Passmore during preseason camp, and 6-on-6 scrimmages have been competitive and intense with two capable liberos leading each side. The Boca Raton, Fla., native is a defensive specialist that will see time on the court in the back row for the Mocs. “Melissa is a fierce competitor, driven and a great communicator on the court,” said Filar. “She has steadily improved as a passer and defender since arriving on campus.” The Mocs have a great luxury in having a player like Green pushing Passmore each and every practice. Competition between the two is key and should provide a solid back row that keeps the offense in system.

MIDDLE BLOCKERS

The 2011 slate for Chattanooga poses its challenges during the non-conference portion before heading into the always difficult SoCon season. The Southern Miss Invitational (8/26-27) begins the campaign featuring the host Golden Eagles, Northwestern (La.) State and Jackson State. On Aug. 30, the first home match at Maclellan Gym of the Filar era puts the Mocs against Belmont. A short trip down I-75 to Kennesaw State for the Owl Invitational allows for Camacho, Christie and Kuroski to play near their hometowns. Chattanooga battles Oral Roberts and Winthrop along with the host Owls. The Mocs host a tournament of their own, the Country Inns & Suites Invitational, on Sept. 9-10 as East Tennessee State, UNC Asheville and Tennessee Tech are welcomed to the Scenic City. Tournament action wraps up with the Hokie Classic on Sept. 16-17 with matches against Connecticut and host Virginia Tech. Before entering SoCon play, the Mocs travel to Alabama A&M (9/20) for a mid-week contest. Chattanooga begins the league schedule with a road trip to Western Carolina (9/25) and Appalachian State (9/25). Mercer invades Maclellan Gym on Sept. 28 before the Mocs head to Wofford (10/1). The Southern Rail Rivalry Series begins on Oct. 5 at Samford. Chattanooga then begins a four-match home stand against UNC Greensboro (10/8), Elon (10/9), College of Charleston (10/15) and The Citadel (10/16). A return trip to Mercer on Oct. 18 occurs before UTC heads to Davidson (10/22) and Georgia Southern (10/23). The Mocs host Furman (10/27) and Samford (10/28) on weeknights. Matches at UNCG (11/4) and Elon (11/5) are the next stops. To conclude the season, Chattanooga hosts Appalachian State (11/12) and Western Carolina (11/13). A primary goal for this year’s squad is to finish in the top four in the North Division and play in the SoCon Tournament hosted by Samford on Nov. 18-20. The champion of the eight-team event earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.

Travis Filar enters his first season as the Mocs head coach in 2011. He was named the volleyball program’s sixth head coach on Feb. 17, 2011. Filar comes to Chattanooga after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at North Carolina. There he helped guide the Tar Heels to a 25-10 record in 2010, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a member of the Tar Heel staff, he primarily worked with the middle blockers, liberos, defensive specialists and coordinated the team’s defensive and blocking systems. He coached three American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans in middle blocker Heather Brooks and liberos Brianna Eskola and Kaylie Gibson.

Eskola finished her career as the all-time digs leader in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while Gibson was named the 2010 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Three of the middle blockers he coached at Carolina are currently playing professionally in Europe. The Davidson, N.C, native also coached six AVCA All-East Region players and seven All-ACC performers over his career at UNC. The Tar Heels led the ACC in digs per set for the third-consecutive season in 2010, finishing the season No. 9 in the nation in that category. In 2008, he guided a defense that ranked second in the nation in digs per set. The Tar Heels were also first in the ACC in opponent hitting percentage and second in the league in blocks per set. UNC won the ACC title that season, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Before coming to North Carolina, Filar was on the coaching staff at Memphis beginning in 2005. His responsibilities were with the middle blockers and team defensive systems. During his two seasons with the Tigers, he coached two AVCA All-Americans in Laura Cote and Shelby Burton, three AVCA All-Midwest Region players and three Conference USA all-league performers including the 2006 Libero of the Year, Christen Clayton. Memphis finished with a 27-8 record in 2006 and was one win from the C-USA title.

He spent two years at his alma mater as an assistant coach and assistant camp director from 2001-03. During that span, he guided four Southern Conference all-league performers. Prior to starting his coaching career, Filar played two seasons of men’s club volleyball at Furman. He graduated with a degree in Health and Exercise Science in 2000.

Filar worked two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Kentucky. While working with the Wildcats, he also was involved in the community teaching physical education and coaching the boys and girls basketball teams at Trinity Christian Academy in Lexington, Ky.

Additionally, he has worked as an assistant volleyball clinician at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Girls Sports Camp at Gardner-Webb University. Filar is married to the former Natalie Muro, a four-year women’s soccer letter winner at Furman. Savanah Para begins her first season with the Chattanooga volleyball program. Para joins the staff with four years of coaching experience at Southeast Missouri State, Bradley and Southern Indiana. She is the recruiting coordinator along with working with the setters and offense system. Parra was an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State in 2010 serving as the recruiting coordinator, while working on the court primarily with the liberos and defensive specialists in passing and defense. She additionally assisted with the offense and setters. During her two-years at Bradley, she helped with the progression of the defensive specialists and setters. Parra assisted in recruiting duties and was in charge of breaking down game film with Bradley players. She was also responsible for all team travel. ASSISTANT COACH TAYLOR WITTMER FIRST SEASON

Taylor Wittmer enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Chattanooga volleyball team. She comes to the Scenic City after completing her student-athlete career at Indiana University. Wittmer helped lead the Hoosiers to the program’s first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2010 as a middle blocker and right side hitter. She played in 128 matches during her four years at Indiana, while registering 1.67 kills and 0.92 blocks per set. She was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award during the 2010 season voted upon by the league’s coaches. Wittmer was acknowledged with the Coaches’ Award in 2007 and the Player’s Inspiration Award in 2009 by the Indiana volleyball program. The Loogootee, Ind., native received three Academic All-Big Ten selections and earned her degree in exercise science in May 2011. Wittmer is currently working towards her master’s degree in Public Administration from UTC and resides in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Duane Hill begins his second season with the Chattanooga volleyball team. He brings 19 years of coaching experience at the Junior Olympic and high school level. The primary focus for Hill is working with the Mocs outside hitters. Hill began working with Junior Olympic volleyball in the Atlanta area in 1993 coaching teams between the ages of 14 and 18. This experience began with Volleyball Atlanta, which transformed into A5 Volleyball, one of the top programs in the Southeast. He has coached six different teams (1994, 1996-97, 2006-08) that have qualified for the National Championships. The 1997 team was the first 18-year old team from Atlanta, Ga., to qualify for Nationals at a Junior Olympic Qualifier tournament. Additionally, he has coached at Milton High School (1993-95) and the Marist School (1996-99, 2005). During the five years at Marist, Hill was involved with three State Championship and two State runner-up teams. Hill worked as the assistant coach at Brenau College in 2004. In the Chattanooga area, Hill has been the head coach at Notre Dame High School (2007) and Ringgold High School (2009), while also working with the Choo Choo City Volleyball Club. He took Notre Dame to the District Championships in Tennessee and Ringgold to the Elite Eight in Georgia. Throughout Hill’s coaching career, he has assisted at summer camps at Georgia Tech, Georgia and Emory. Hill has additionally organized and instructed at many high school camps. Hill has also trained players individually and as a group as a private trainer since 1992. He has conducted oneon-one training and taught in conjunction with the Suwanee Sports Academy and VolleyPerformance Atlanta. He currently leads the VolleyPerformance program for North Georgia and Chattanooga. The Los Angeles, Calf., native earned his associates degree in history from Georgia Perimeter College. ATHLETIC TRAINER JESS TANNER FOURTH SEASON

Jess is in her fourth year at Chattanooga. Volleyball is her primary sport responsibility is volleyball. Secondary responsibilities include supervising the athletic training duties for softball and coordinating the apparel for the sports medicine department. She is the administrator for NCAA and Institutional Drug Testing. Tanner coordinates the recruitment of graduate assistant athletic trainers. She is the co-creator and co-director of the Personal Best Program. Tanner came to Chattanooga after two years as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Auburn where she covered men’s and women’s track & field, cross country and golf. She was also active with the Orthopedic Clinic Outreach program helping provide event coverage for area high schools while earning her master’s degree. The West Milford, N.J., native won the Alabama Sports Medicine Institute Award for athletic training. Jess earned her undergraduate degree from James Madison in 2006 where she won several awards including the Aimee Gunnoe Outstanding Athletic Training Student Award. A native of West Milford, N.J., Tanner resides in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Erica is entering her fist season as manager for the volleyball team. Last season, Cowart was the official scorer for the Mocs home games at Maclellan Gym As a freshman walk on, Cowart recorded two service aces and two digs for Chattanooga. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is pursuing a degree in health and human performance at UTC.

Cowart was a four-year letterwinner at Notre Dame High School and helped the Fighting Irish capture the 2006 State Championship.

2010 SEASON RECAP RHODES ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT Head coach Lisa Rhodes announced her decision to retire on Dec. 20, 2010. She was the Mocs all-time winningest volleyball coach after finishing her 17th season. The two-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year (1997-98) ends her career with 280 wins. She led Chattanooga to three-straight SoCon Tournament titles from 1996-98 that included appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Rhodes coached three SoCon Players/Liberos of the Year, including two-time National Libero of the Year Laura Newberry, who holds the NCAA career record for digs with 3,176. PASSMORE HONORED AS SOCON LIBERO OF THE YEAR Sophomore Paula Passmore was voted as SoCon Libero of the Year by the league coaches. She paced the conference and finished 18th nationally with 5.45 digs per set. Passmore recorded 654 digs along with 20 service aces and just 25 receiving errors credited against her in 585 opportunities. She was a two-time defensive player of the week and the September defensive player of the moth. The Merrit Island, Fla., native posted a career-best 38-digs against Elon on Oct. 30 and hit 30 digs four different times. Passmore is eight all-time in a single-season with 654 digs. In her two-year career, she has recorded 1,200 digs, which is eigth all-time at Chattanooga.

200TH SOCON VICTORY With the 3-0 win at Western Carolina on Nov. 7, the Mocs recorded their 200th overall Southern Conference victory. Chattanooga has a 201-181 (.525) dating back to the program’s start in 1983. Over that span, UTC has captured four SoCon titles. UTC is just the third team to reach that mark, just behind Furman and Appalachian State. BARNES NAMED ESPN ACADEMIC FIRST TEAM Senior middle blocker Courtney Barnes was selected to the ESPN Academic All-District IV First Team voted upon by CoSIDA. This was the third time that Barnes has earned recognition, but the first team honors is her first. She led the Mocs with 2.42 kills per set, while hitting .340 percent, fourth in the SoCon. She compiled a career percentage of .312, second all-time in Chattanooga history. The Franklin, Tenn., native paced the team with 22 solos blocks and is second with 96 total blocks. Barnes notched 822 kills in her career at Chattanooga. Barnes completed her career with 57 total blocks, eighth all-time. She has 270 total blocks tied with Heather Strohl. ON THE CAREER CHARTS Senior setter Bailee Chastain registered 713 assists this season, totaling 1,940 in her career. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is now seventh on the UTC all-time assists charts. She compliled a 2.04 dig per set average along with 41 service aces in her four-years with the Mocs. KUHN APPROACHES CAREER BLOCKS Kuhn paced the team with 114 total blocks this season. She has compiled 257 in her career, eighth all-time, along with 20923locks assists, which is sixth just in front of Barnes. Kuhn set the Chattanooga block assist record in 2009 with 103 and finiched second on the list this season with 99. Newberry led the nation in digs with a national record 942 in 2007 en route to being named Collegiate Volleyball Update’s National Libero of the Year repeating the honor in 2008. She is a three-time SoCon Libero of the Year (2005, 2007, 2008). Krouse’s 342 service aces is a Southern Conference career record, while Newberry’s 3,176 career digs is an NCAA record.

He began his teaching career at Iowa State University in 1983 before joining the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1985.

The couple has two children, Caroline and Austin. Roger and Carolyn also share custody of “Madeline Albright,” a rescued husky mix with diplomatic immunity.

RICK HART DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS seasons, more than any other SoCon school. • In 2008-09, Chattanooga posted school records with five teams competing in the NCAA Championships and 10 squads represented in the postseason. • Set a school record in 2009 with a 99th place finish in the NACDA Learfield Director’s Cup that measures the overall success of all Division I athletic programs. Three of the Mocs’ top-5 all-time finishes in the NACDA Director’s Cup have come in Hart’s tenure. • Captured UTC’s first Germann Cup in 2007-08, signifying the best all-around women’s sports program in the Southern Conference. When Rick Hart came to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he brought with him a vision and plan for the future of the Mocs. Over the last five years, Hart has changed the landscape of the UTC Athletics Department with his leadership, organizational skills and innovative ideas on how to fulfill the Mocs’ mission of preparing students for productive and meaningful lives. Since his hiring on May 23, 2006, Hart’s efforts have made a tremendous impact on the Mocs student-athletes’ quest for comprehensive excellence - academically, athletically and socially.

Hart has also been very successful in the traditional roles as UTC Athletics Director. In an effort to ensure efficient and effective management of all elements of the athletics program, and to better align athletics with the academic mission of the institution, Hart developed and installed the Strategic Plan for UTC Athletics. A focus on the studentathlete experience has resulted in increased ticket sales and fundraising, innovative partnerships, improved athletics facilities and the addition of quality coaches.

• Shown continuous improvement in the overall gradepoint-averages for student-athletes in each of the last six semesters - highlighted by a 2.97 g.p.a. in the spring of 2011, the highest semester mark on record. • Over half of the Mocs’ student-athletes made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll each of the last four semesters. • Developed and implemented an ambitious APR improvement plan that has increased the APR scores of all Mocs athletics programs.

Managing finite resources in collegiate athletics is widely known as a difficult task. Hart made fiscal stewardship a priority for the department since his arrival. With diligent leadership and a commitment from each and every member of the department, UTC Athletics has made significant strides towards reducing the financial burden on the institution and adherence to university allocated budgets.

Hart arrived on the UTC campus after serving seven years at the University of Oklahoma in various athletics administrative capacities. Hart’s career with the Sooners began in 1999 as the Director of Marketing and Licensing. He became Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Licensing in 2001, and developed and implemented marketing campaigns which generated annual ticket revenues in excess of $19.5 million. Hart was promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Program Advancement and Branding in 2003 and Senior Associate Athletics Director in 2006. Hart has also worked in athletics for the University of North Carolina and East Carolina University and has served with the U.S. Olympic Committee. A 1994 graduate of UNC, Hart earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Health and Sport Science. Hart and his wife, Allison, also a graduate of North Carolina, are proud parents of Trevor and Caroline. A third-generation athletics administrator, Hart’s father, Dave, currently serves as Executive Director of Athletics at the University of Alabama, and his late grandfather, Dave Sr., served in a variety of roles within collegiate athletics including a stint as the Commissioner of the Southern Conference from 1987-91.

PLAYER INTERVIEWS Coaches and Players — All requests for coaching staff or player interviews should be made at least one day in advance through the Communications and Media Relations Office. A time mutually convenient for the athlete and the member of the media will be set up. Most interviews will be conducted following daily practice on location at the practice court. Players will be asked to return telephone calls to members of the media; player telephone numbers will not be issued.
