When you enjoy the Sunday afternoon open skate at the Northwest Arena on March 25, several good things will happen. Not only will you have a fun experience on the ice and improve your own well-being, you will also benefit a local youth-serving organization. A portion of your $6 skate fee for the 1:30-4:30 session will support the Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony (CRYS). Skate rental is $2. As part of this Sunday Fund Day, music students and others will perform in the Arena lobby as well as offer a bake sale. Following teacher recommendations and auditions in January, CRYS students began rehearsing under Music Director and Conductor Bryan Eckenrode. An intensive workshop with sectional coaches will also prepare them for their Spring Gala Concert on Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2018, 4 p.m. at Chautauqua Institution’s Elizabeth S. Lenna Hall. Enrichment trips to hear high quality orchestral performances in the area are part of these young musicians’ experience. CRYS students pay tuition, with a full third of current students receiving tuition assistance. While parents, board members and students all participate in fund raising, support by individuals and local organizations and businesses is significant. Essential funding is provided by local foundations. The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony shows appreciation

Place turkey back into skillet. 9. When peppers are done, pull from water using tongs, and shake off the excess water into the pan. Place directly into glass baking pan. I use a 8x8 pyrex pan which is perfect for helping those peppers stand up! 10. When rice is done, add to turkey, mixing diced tomatoes (undrained) and tomato sauce in. Cook for about 5-10 minutes, just until tomatoes are warm. 11. If you’d like, and you have more than 1 cup of cheese, you can add some into the turkey mixture. The flavor is just fine without it, though! 12. Fill peppers with rice and turkey mixture, then top with cheese. You may have extra, depending on the size of your peppers. Depending on the amount, you can bake some of this in a separate pan with some cheese on top, while your peppers are baking. 13. Bake in preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until cheese is thouroughly melted and a little brown on top. Enjoy!

The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Mayville Troop 126 held their annual ‘Scouting For Food’ drive on Saturday, March 3 throughout the Mayville NY area. Thanks to the generous donations of food and personal necessity items by the Mayville area residents, the Scouts were able to collect about 45 bags of donations. This annual drive benefits the St. Paul’s Episcopal Food Pantry (Mayville Food Pantry), located at 99 S. Erie St., Mayville. Those in need within the Chautauqua Lake Central School District will be helped by the generosity of the Scouts and the community. The Mayville Food Pantry is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (closed holidays and in case of bad weather). The St. Paul’s Thrift Shop, also located at 99 S. Erie St, Mayville, is open Monday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The last Saturday of the
month the Thrift Shop holds a $3 bag sale. The Thrift Shop gratefully accepts donations but requests that donations be made during the Thrift Shop’s open hours and that donations not be left outside if the Thrift Shop is not open due to the items possibly being damaged by the elements. The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Public Health has announced the following free rabies vaccination clinics in Chautauqua County: • Wednesday, March 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. in Jamestown, N.Y. This clinic is sponsored by the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services and the Chautauqua County Humane Society. Dr. Harry Shaw will be the attending veterinarian. • Saturday, April 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Town of Poland Highway Building, 533 Grubb Hill Rd. in Kennedy, N.Y. This clinic is sponsored by the Town of Poland and
Dr. Mary Fales will be the attending veterinarian. • Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Town of Westfield Highway Building, 118 Chestnut St. in Westfield, N.Y. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older. All pets must be on a leash or in a cage and pet owners should bring rabies vaccination records for each animal that will be receiving a shot to ensure proper and effective vaccination. New York State Public Health Law requires each dog, cat and domesticated ferret over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies and county residents are encouraged to be respon-
sible pet owners by having their pets vaccinated. Rabies is a very serious disease of warm-blooded animals caused by a virus. Raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes are the common disease carriers. The virus is transmitted to humans and animals through saliva and it can enter the body from a bite, scratch, scrape or
open cut. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system and can cause brain swelling and ultimately death within days of the onset of symptoms. After five years and hundreds of rounds, I can no longer considered myself a newbie golfer. I’ve checked off lots of boxes on my way to becoming a “seasoned” golfer. First birdie. First eagle. First time breaking 100, 90 and 80 on 18 holes. First time breaking 50 and then 40 on nine holes. Sure there is a lot I haven’t done, but to call myself a new golfer would be unfair to the real new golfers out there. Or even to the golfers yet to be.
