Ellington Library presents “Chautauqua County Curiosities” Contributed Article
Where in Chautauqua County was the Black Walnut Tree located that was so large that after it was hollowed out a room holding 39 people could fit in its remains? What is the Amos Sottle Fiddle and what makes it unique? These questions and more will be answered at the Ellington Farman Library by Town of Hanover Historian Vince Martonis.

Chautauqua Business Weekly Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier
Chamber Honors Individuals and Businesses Awards Banquet is October 11 The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the recipients of its annual awards, to be presented during the Chamber Annual Awards Banquet October 11 at the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia. This year the County Chamber will bestow its Economic Development Award on Dunkirk Metal Products, while the Person of the Year Award will honor the Calimeri Family of Jamestown. The Economic Development Award is presented to a company or organization that has contributed most to the economic development, quality of life and stability of our region. This represents one award for the entire region. Dunkirk Metal Products is a leading sheet metal fabricator and manufacturer of specialty metal products engineered to meet the demands of today’s industries. The company serves a diverse customer base in construction, automotive, HVAC, and other industries. The Person of the Year Award is presented to someone who is recognized by the entire region for their outstanding achievements and contributions, either within the past year or through a lifetime of achievement. The Calimeri Family is now in its second generation of leadership in crafting custom furniture for the hospitality industry at its Artone plant. It is truly a family business, led by Michael Calimeri and Sebastian Calimeri. But their service extends beyond the business as they generously donate to dozens of organizations in the Jamestown area annually and also provide educational tours, internships, and more opportunities for students and the community. Each of the six community Chambers of Commerce presents a Community Service Award during the Chamber Banquet. The Dunkirk Community Chamber has selected James T. Nichols to posthumously receive its award. A Dunkirk native, Mr. Nichols worked side by side with his family to build Nichols Hometown Service. He also chaired the Dunkirk Harbor Commission for 15 years and was actively involved in a number of outdoor groups. The Fredonia Community Chamber chose Kurt Maytum for its Community Service Award. The President of DFT Communications, he was selected for his more than 37 year volunteer career with the Fredonia Fire Department where he is past Chief and was also a Paramedic and field supervisor for many years. Laurie Bifaro has been selected to receive the Community Service Award from the Hanover Community Chamber for the economic rebirth she has helped to bring to the Silver Creek community by expanding her business, A Cut Above the Rest, into a full service salon for hair, nails, facials, and more.
The Jamestown Community Chamber selected Bill Stevenson for its Community Service Award. His love of community and volunteer efforts have helped to make numerous festivals and events happen in the community. He serves on the board of the National Comedy Center and Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Museum, chairs the Riverfront Management Council, and has volunteered with the Jamestown Area Railway Heritage Center, the Babe Ruth World Series, and more. The Mayville-Chautauqua Community Chamber has chosen SandraLee Wagner to receive its Community Service Award. Ms. Wagner was instrumental in helping to establish the Lakeside Bark Dog Run across from Lakeside Park in Mayville, as she petitioned, raised funds, and rallied others to bring the project to fruition. The Westfield-Barcelona Community Chamber is presenting its Community Service Award to the sister and brother team of Joan Mascaro Caruso and Rick Mascaro. The two have worked together and individually to help make things happen in Westfield. Both retired teachers, Mrs. Caruso has been active with the Patterson Library board of trustees and improvements to Moore Park as well as other activities. Her brother returned to Westfield from South Carolina and established the Lake Shore Center for the Arts. We hope you will join us in saluting all of these deserving award winners during the Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet. For more information call the Chamber at 366-6200 or 484-1101 or find the event online. The 44th annual Busti Apple Harvest Festival will be held, rain or shine, September 30 Contributed Article

made food items.
In 1972 the newly formed Busti Historical Society and the Busti Shamrocks 4-H club that had initiated an ambitious project of restoring the abandoned but historic grist mill in Busti, planned a two day Pioneer Festival. The Mill had already been repaired enough to admit the public but most of the activities were held at the near-by Firemen’s Grounds. These included pioneer craft demonstrations, a short repeating stage melodrama, an antiques exhibit, a hammered dulcimer performance, a Saturday night square dance, a Sunday morning religious service in the mill, and a Sunday afternoon pony pull. The festival was one of the first of its kind in the area, inspired by an annual event in Madison County, N. Y. It was an inspiration to many similar events that now enliven our region.
After 40 years of work, the restored and running mill was rededicated to the community in June, 2013. A 60 by 60 foot demonstration building was built about the same time. Earlier an adjoining barn had been converted into a kitchen, meeting room, and office with one whole floor made into a museum. Subsequently the house across the road that had been built by Francis Sowl, the man who built the Mill, and had served as home for several of the millers, was bought. The exterior has been restored and work has progressed enough on the interior to allow guests to tour during this year’s festival.
The Festival is famous for ready to eat and take home foods: hamburgers and hot dogs, beef on kümmelweck, apples, apple cider, apple pies and other fruit pies made on the premises, apple butter cooked in the traditional way, and baked goods.
The one day Apple Festival was initiated in 1975 as an additional event. Its format and timing proved so popular that it soon absorbed and replaced the Pioneer Festival. The Society early adopted a policy of earning as much of the money to finance the Mill restoration as possible rather than rely primarily on grants and the Festivals have been their main fund raiser. Admission fees now are shared with the Busti Fire Department which
The Festival consists of several main attractions and features. The restored 1839 grist mill is the showpiece of the Festival and the heart of the Historical Society’s mission. It will be running and grinding throughout the day. Out on the grounds scattered around the three main buildings and inside the big Demonstration Building are historical skill demonstrations and educational exhibits. Strung down the driveway and along the road to the parking grounds are private sales vendors with handmade craft items for sale. In front of the Mill is a Farmers’ Market of seasonal produce and locally
Visitors can study an extensive exhibit on some of the 19th century Chautauqua County gunmakers. This is seen nowhere else. There will be horse drawn wagon rides, a one-room school exhibit, and an old time folk string band that will call an impromptu square dance right in the road for willing guests. Local farmers and collectors will bring their antique and restored farm tractors. The historical skills exhibited include apple butter making, shingle making, spinning, weaving, candle making, butter churning and other once common crafts. The Festival is held 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain or shine, always the last Sunday in September, the 30th this year. Admission is $5.00, children under 12 free. Please for our safety and yours, leave pets at home. Sponsored by Busti Historical Society.
Praise Fellowship Launches The Story Series and New Service Time
“Most people don’t know the Bible. In fact, most people don’t even read the Bible,” said Rick Rohlin, Lead Pastor. “Most Americans, when surveyed recently, said they wish they read the Bible more and wish they understood the Bible--ironically, even including skeptics of the Bible and unbelievers.” Praise Fellowship’s comprehensive coverage of The Story will comprise their weekly worship services at 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM on Sundays, their student ministry on Monday evenings, PF Chapel teaching with lunch on Wednesday mornings, as well as a new Thursday evening full worship service at 6:35 PM. “If you work or have other obligations on Sunday mornings, there aren’t many other options for you to attend a regular worship service during the week in our region,” said Rohlin. Praise Fellowship’s new Thursday evening service offers to meet that need. “We’re calling it our ‘Manna Meeting’ and starting it at 6:35 PM, based on John 6:35, where Jesus is the Bread of Life,” said Rohlin. There will also be weekly video teachings posted online to delve even further into Scripture and the topics covered that week.
Contributed Article Praise Fellowship
EPIC Student Life, Praise Fellowship’s student ministry, will also focus on The Story. EPIC meets at Praise Fellowship for a time of worship, games, and teaching every Monday at 6:30 PM. They will be kicking off their fall session on September 10. All students in grades 7 through 12 are invited to attend.
Beginning September 9, Praise Fellowship will kick off The Story series, a walk through the Bible. The Story is an abridged Bible, made easier to read and arranged chronologically to help people better understand and engage with God’s Word.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Praise Fellowship exists to provide a time and place to worship God. All are welcome and invited to join in weekly worship and teaching services. For more information, visit praisefellowship.net or email mail@praisefellowship.net.
Opera House to Present Acclaimed Comedian Tammy Pescatelli Contributed Article The 1891 Fredonia Opera House
FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present acclaimed comedian Tammy Pescatelli on Fri., Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Arguably one of the hardest working women in comedy today, Tammy Pescatelli brings brassy sexiness with a female voice of witty sarcasm to her audiences, holding her own on topics of sports, television, dating and family life using tonguein-cheek humor. She is one of the only female comedians who is relatable to every audience member - male and female! After seeing her perform, nearly everyone wishes she was their best friend or sister! Tammy Pescatelli’s After School Special is her latest comedy special. It was filmed earlier this year and is a highly anticipated follow-up to her award-winning one-hour Netflix special, Finding the Funny. Pescatelli’s career jump-started after competing on - and being named one of the Final Five - on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Her season drew 17 million viewers, garnering her a host of loyal new fans that found themselves alongside those she had amassed through years of touring comedy clubs. It solidified her as one of the sharpest women in the comedy world! She recently has been seen in appearances on The View, Guy’s Grocery Games: Comics Compete and The Howard Stern Show. She was chosen by Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg to be a part of their Dirty, Sexy, Funny franchise that included a hilarious all-female slate of stand-up comedians comedy special on EPIX/Hulu, a touring show and a pilot for A&E Network. With a slew of other accolades under her belt including co-creating, executive producing, writing and starring in her own reality show, A Stand Up Mother, on the WEtv Network - Pescatelli has appeared on numerous television shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, A&E’s Donnie Loves Jenny, Bravo’s Rocco’s Dinner Party, CBS’ The Talk, NBC’s Last Comic Standing: The Best of the Best, as well as her own Comedy Central Presents special that won the Network’s Standup Showdown that year. She also was a guest several times on the syndicated Comics Unleashed show and was chosen for its Best
of the Best that was a worldwide top-selling DVD. Internationally, she was featured on Best of Just For Laughs, in Montreal, and The World Stands Up and The Laugh Factory, in Europe and Australia. Pescatelli’s material is currently a fixture on the comedy channels of Sirius/XM Radio; and she is a regular guest of The Howard Stern Wrap Up Show, TapOut, and the syndicated The Bob and Tom Show. Her film credits include: Made in Brooklyn, I am Battle Comic, Single: A Documentary Film and Everybody Wants to be Italian. A regular on USO Comedy Tours, where she is honored to perform for troops all over the world, Pescatelli continues to tour and perform to sell-out shows around the country. Opening for Pescatelli is Collin Chamberlin. A young, quick-witted comedian based in Pittsburgh, Chamberlin has an easy, likeable style. He has been featured at comedy clubs such as Hilarities, Milwaukee Comedy Café, Buffalo’s Helium, Go Bananas and the Pittsburgh Improv, where he placed second in 2014’s Best New Comedian Competition. He has performed at several festivals including the North Carolina Comedy Festival, the DC Comedy Festival and the Burning Bridges Comedy Festival. He has worked with many national acts including Christina Pazsitzky, Greg Warren, Dave Coulier, Taylor Williamson, Jamie Lissow and SNL’s Kenan Thompson. He even has had an onstage role with Steve Martin and Martin Short! Tammy Pescatelli’s appearance is part of the Opera House Spotlight Series, which is generously sponsored by DFT Communications. Additional support comes from the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County and the Arts Services Initiative of WNY’s Give for Greatness program. Tickets are $20 ($18 for Opera House members and educators, $10 for students) and may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.fredopera. org anytime. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a membersupported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. The Chautauqua Star kids’ clothes were at stake. I needed some advice from someone who had gone through the same situation. Very quick into my search, I found the blog post of a mom who had the exact same problem, but with a red crayon.
Crayons and Laundry By Katy Wise Contributing Writer
Have you ever had one of those weeks where you wonder what else life can throw at you?
summertime, we had an absolutely ridiculous amount of laundry. With five people, there’s usually a generous amount anyways, then add in all the ways that clothes get dirty when it’s warm and hot out. Well, last week, I found a blue crayon in the laundry pile. After all of the laundry had already been done and was in the folding process. As in, there were tiny blue spots everywhere.
I don’t necessarily mean the big stuff, but all the random little things that come up?
Every single item that had been in that load was covered in mystery spots. Until, the weapon had been found and identified, of course.
Summer with three kids is full of these things. The things that make for great stories, not always immediately, but a bit further down the road.
Panic was starting to set in, and I knew that there was no point in getting angry or frustrated, as that would just make it harder to think clearly about getting the spots out.
Like the time our daughter put a bead up her nose a couple of weeks ago. One of those things where you think for sure that you’re well past these kind of incidents, and that your child is old enough to not do such a thing. Well surprise! Because surprises are what toddlers live by. So last week, with all the various happenings of
“We need to have our sponsors in place soon so they don’t miss opportunities for recognition,” said event organizer and Audubon naturalist Katie Finch. Enchanted Forest is the first Friday and Saturday in October. These magical evenings combine a luminary-lit trail with talking animals, fascinating both adults and the children they accompany. Finch pointed out that there is a new way for businesses and individuals to support this annual event that is always a sell-out. “We are adding a basket raffle this year as an additional fundraiser. We are seeking donations of baskets with local goods for both kids and adults.” The Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, evenings will begin with stories and songs at a backyard campfire. Then participants will be escorted around a trail by volunteer “fireflies” that light the way with lanterns. Larger-than-life-sized animals tell about their lives, sharing fun and educational information through
That same load of laundry was washed a total of seven times before all the spots were gone. Some of the heavier fabrics in lighter colors, as in my seven year-old’s chino shorts, still had very faint marks. However, after watching the progress over that many loads, I knew that very faint was as good as that particular item was going to get. So if you ever happen to get crayon all over your clothing, you are going to need some Dawn dish soap, white vinegar and very hot water. Yes, I realize that hot water it typically not what you want for stains, but you need a temperature that will melt that crayon off. This offers a service to Audubon’s more than 19,000 annual visitors as well as providing an opportunity to teach about water and how reusable bottles can have a positive impact on the environment.
