Keeping The Faith Bible says about choosing a church as well as your motivations for desiring a change. The Bible says that it’s the will of God that we are part of a local body of believers (Hebrews 10:25). It seems you’ve already got that, but do you know why God wants His people to be in a church? Let me share some of my own experience. I was raised in a church Rev. Yet, I am still here because I know that this is where God put me. 1 Corinthians 12:18 tells us Gods will about being in church, “But now God has set each individual member in the church body, even as it pleased Him.” This scripture indicates that its God’s decision to place us. His plan isn’t just about what’s best for us, but what how our being in the right place will benefit the church body, as a whole. With this in mind, I ask you to examine your heart. While the other church may have more “stuff”, is it really where God needs you to be? Continues next week…

Fredonia Garden Club Fundraises for Long-Time Member Memorial Bench Contributed Article Fredonia Garden Club

The Fredonia Garden Club has lost a beloved long-time member. Grace Harris Grimes, “Amazing Grace,” passed away on January 3, 2017 at the age of 99. Grace spent many years teaching and, once retired, she spent her long years of retirement exploring her hobbies such as traveling, sewing, crocheting, and her love of gardening. Even at 99, Grace was active – going to church, attending Garden Club, taking exercise classes at the local Senior Center, bowling, volunteering at the Fredonia Opera House, and giving her time and money to those less fortunate. Grace joined the Fredonia Garden Club in the early 1970s. She served as a three-term President and Parliamentarian, Horticulture Chairman at the Chautauqua County Fair, lifetime member of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State, the State Judges Council, and was a Master Gardener. She received the Fredonia Garden Club’s “Personal Perennial Bloom” award in 2015. Grace possessed a world of knowledge and encouraged the FGC to participate in many areas such as gardening, flower arranging, horticulture, and conservation. She will be missed by all who knew her. The Fredonia Garden Club has chosen to honor Grace’s memory with a park bench to be placed on the Darwin R. Barker Library grounds. Donations for the bench are greatly appreciated and can be sent to Mrs. Illa Merryweather, 19 Skyeandro Drive, Fredonia NY 14063.

How to Make The Backyard The Style Center of Your Home

• SCREENED TOP SOIL • SAND, STONE AND GRAVEL PRODUCTS

Contributed Article NewsUSA

For many homeowners, the backyard is not at the forefront of their home-design plans. But procrastination can be an advantage when it comes to outdoor living. By the time many people consider the backyard, they have developed a strong sense of their own décor personality. Most consumers' design styles can be classified as traditionalist, bohemian, modern, eclectic, rustic or industrial, according to Belgard, a company dedicated to outdoor living design and elements for patio spaces and beyond. Fortunately, there are backyard design plans to suit any taste, as well as any budget. Some design elements that might have particular appeal to different décor personalities include: • For the traditionalist: Classic comfort. What is the primary purpose of a patio? A place for sitting and relaxing. Attractive, sturdy pavers in appealing patterns provide easy walking and an artistic base for conversation nooks of tables, chairs, planters, and picnic tables. • For the bohemian: Fire pit. Fire pits are an easy way to promote cozy gathering for all ages. And everyone can appreciate freedom from bugs; wood fires can help hold mosquitoes at bay. • For the modernist: Multiple levels. Homeowners seeking a modern look can consider a range of options for walkways and pavers that might include steps and slopes to wind through a terraced garden. • For the eclectic: Water features. But not just for swimming. Homeowners can show off an eclectic backyard style with a fountain, fish pond, or other water feature that makes a splash. • For the rustic: Eating out. Cooking outdoors can reach a new level, as advanced outdoor kitchen units allow guests to help with meal preparation or just chat with the host/chef while enjoying the outdoor setting. • For the industrial: Unique lighting is a way to make a statement and set a mood in an outdoor setting. Some ways to get creative with light include not only hardscape lighting and illuminated planters, but short-term elements such as lighting fixtures that highlight cool metals and metallics for a more urban, industrial vibe. Belgard, part of Oldcastle Architectural, was established in 1995 and remains a respected source of durable, classic, stylish outdoor-living products and a resource for design ideas to help homeowners take on backyard design with confidence. 5 Helpful Hints for a Clean and Clutter-Free Home Contributed Article StatePoint

Papers piling up? Toys taking over? If your home is more cluttered than clean, you’re not alone -85 percent of homeowners say that organization and storage is the most desired feature in a home, according to OrganizedLiving.com. Your clean-home dreams can come true. In fact, simply getting rid of clutter alone can eliminate 40 percent of housework in the average home, according to the National Soap and Detergent Association. With a few helpful hints your home can get organized… and stay that way. Conquer a Clutterfree Kitchen. With a wealth of gadgets, it’s no wonder the kitchen is a clutter culprit. To start your cleanse, remove everything from drawers and cupboards. If you haven’t used an item in the last month (unless it’s a holiday necessity) – purge it! Next up, clean and line drawer and shelf surfaces with a quality shelf liner, such as Easy Liner brand shelf liners by Duck brand. Not only will it protect them from dirt and grime, but it also offers a good gauge: if you can’t see the shelf liner, it’s time to purge again! Get a New Spin on the Laundry Room. Sometimes the laundry room needs a bit of cleaning itself. Detergents and other build-up can cause washing machine

odors. Run white vinegar through a cycle to sanitize it with ease. Next, improve efficiency and reduce fire hazards by thoroughly cleaning lint from dryer vents -- both inside and out. Finally, use labeled baskets to ensure everything has its place. And, since the laundry room is often a catch-all location, label one as a “put away” basket and be sure to empty it daily, putting its contents back in their proper places. Control Bathroom Chaos. From towels to toiletries, bathrooms hold a lot of “stuff,” which can make organizing feel like a losing battle. Create a de-cluttering schedule. Since many toiletries, such as toothbrushes and make-up, should be replaced quarterly, this is the perfect time to purge. Empty drawers and linen cabinets and toss out items that are old or aren’t being used. Shelf liner can once again be a useful addition before

putting items back, since products like Easy Liner brand products with Clorox antimicrobial protection can add an extra level of clean by helping prevent the growth of odor-causing mold and mildew on the liner. Plus, you can toss it in the wash for easy cleaning. Gear-Up Garage Organization. From toys to tools to seasonal gear, the garage has it all. Unfortunately, 25 percent of two-car garages are so cluttered that there isn’t room to park a car, reports the U.S. Department of Energy. Annually, remove everything and categorize items into “keep,” “sell/donate,” and “trash” piles. Next, designate sections of the garage for “work” (hardware and gardening tools) and “play” (toys, bikes and balls). Create vertical storage by adding hooks and floor-to-ceiling shelves. Finally, label bins, boxes and shelves to encourage everyone to maintain the new-found

organization. Purr-fectly Clean Pets. Humans aren’t the only ones accumulating clutter or making messes. In fact, Trupanion.com discovered that the average number of pet toys in a home was 34! Start each season by tossing out tattered pet toys and thoroughly disinfecting the keepers – along with leashes, boxes and bedding. To keep areas neat and clean, place nonadhesive shelf liner under food and water bowls to keep them in place and spills contained. A piece under the litter box can also reduce litter scatter across floors and the grip surface helps pull litter from dirty paws. For more information on unique ways to use shelf liner in your home visit www.duckbrand.com. By following these helpful tips and tricks, your home will soon be clean, organized and clutterfree.

Water Treatment System Maintenance for the Well Owner Contributed Article NewsUSA

Water treatment can help household well owners address health risks and undesirable taste, odor, and smells -- but treatment systems work only if properly maintained, says the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), which operates the website, WellOwner.org. Periodic water testing can help ensure that treatment systems are working properly. A water treatment service provider or the manufacturer can recommend water testing intervals. Consult with a water treatment professional about your capability of maintaining your water treatment system. If you are unsure, have a water treatment

professional do it. Here are maintenance basics for primary water treatment technologies. Continuous disinfection: Ultraviolet light systems treat water coming into the house. Good maintenance requires that the quartz sleeve in which the lamp is housed be clean. Also, annual lamp replacement is wise. Ion exchange: Referred to as water softeners, ion exchange needs salt, which needs replenishment periodically. Water softeners can run years with minimal maintenance. Maintenance requirements can vary. For example, if ion exchange is used to remove nitrate -- a health risk to infants at certain concentrations -- the system requires a different resin and substance to regenerate the resin than traditional

water softening. Reverse osmosis (RO): When coupled with granular activated carbon (GAC) filters before and after the RO membrane, RO is effective in treating many water quality issues. GAC filters usually need replacement once or twice a year. But the RO membrane can last for years. Whole house sediment filter: These remove particulate and enhance effectiveness and reduce maintenance of treatment systems down the line. Follow the manufacturer's filter-change directions. Adaptable automatic backwashing filter: These backwash the filter media, requiring little maintenance to remove sediment, tastes and odors, iron and manganese, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and arsenic.

The media bed must be replaced periodically. For VOCs and arsenic, consult with a qualified water treatment service provider or the manufacturer about periodic water monitoring and proper media bed disposal. Acid neutralizing systems to reduce lead: These reduce corrosiveness in water that can cause lead leaching from plumbing pipes, fittings, fixtures, and solder. Adaptable automatic backwashing filters and sodium carbonate feed pump systems can reduce corrosiveness. The filter requires calcite addition annually and total calcite replacement every two to three years. The injection system requires adding sodium carbonate two to three times annually. Opera House Cinema Series to Screen “A Dog’s Purpose” RAFFLE TO BENEFIT LAKESHORE HUMANE SOCIETY • • • • •

Contributed Article 1891 Fredonia Opera House

The next feature film in the Opera House Cinema Series is the sweetly sentimental “A Dog’s Purpose.” It will be screened on Sat., Apr. 8, and Tues., Apr. 11, at 7:30 p.m. Movie patrons who bring one of the items listed on the Lakeshore Humane Society’s Donation list will receive a raffle ticket for A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey boxed set of books, to be given away at each screening. Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, “A Dog’s Purpose” is the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The film also stars Peggy Lipton and Dennis Quaid. Leah Greenblatt, in Entertainment Weekly, calls the film “a family film from another era … a comforting Milk Bone for the soul.” Ariel Scotti, in the New York Daily News, calls it “both heartwarming and soul-shattering. Its theme of an unbreakable bond between man and his best friend is reminiscent of ‘My Dog Skip,’

If they’re anything like Bailey, they’ll be glad to see you.” Rated PG (for thematic elements and some peril), “A Dog’s Purpose” runs one

for environmental conservation. Help research global warming in Canada's Mackenzie Mountains - If you love getting out into nature, you're going to love this chance to work with scientists to discover clues about global warming in the Mackenzie Mountains, a majestic mountain range that runs along the border between Canada's Northwest Territories and the Yukon. The researchers here are working to preserve the area's sensitive environment and learn more about the effects of global warming. You'll help them look for and monitor signs of climate change, take soil and permafrost samples, monitor the health of the tree line and record information on native plant species. When you're not in the field, you'll have a chance to relax at the lodge and attend talks on climate change and the natural history of species in the area. Protect bottlenose dolphins in Croatia - The small village of Zambratija, Croatia, will be your base as you volunteer with bottlenose dolphin conservation on the Adriatic Sea where the bottlenose dolphin population has declined by approximately 50 percent in the last five decades. Your volunteer efforts will include dolphin observation and tracking as well as entering and analyzing data from field work. You'll learn how to distinguish between dolphin species and have the chance to attend morning talks about NGO efforts to protect marine mammals and ecology. During your stay, there will also be at least one organized group trip to a nearby national park. Care for wildlife in Hawaii This volunteer opportunity is your chance to have an unforgettable beach vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii while also helping to care for native and exotic wildlife at a local wildlife center. During your stay, you'll be caring for resident exotic and non-releasable wildlife, working with injured wildlife and

returning them to the wild if possible and educating visitors and locals about Hawaii's island ecology and animal behavior. When you're not working, you'll have the chance to enjoy the island's many beautiful beaches. • Participate in island conservation in the Galapagos - Volunteer with Projects Abroad in the Galapagos Islands, one of the most naturally diverse environments in the world. Volunteers are based on San Cristobal Island in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and participate in a hands-on way with conservation efforts. The Galapagos Islands are renowned as a location for ecotourism, and work for this project includes removing invasive plant species, replacing them with indigenous species, participating in beach cleanups, and observing and collecting data on various native animals, especially the Galapagos Petrel, an endangered seabird. If that wasn't enough, you'll also get the chance to work at the Galapagos National Park's giant tortoise breeding center. The eco-active opportunities that round out our list are helping with elephant research in Sri Lanka, working on mountain conservation in Nepal, conserving great white sharks in South Africa, rescuing animals in Costa Rica and rehabilitating sea turtles in Australia. For more details on these opportunities, read Cheapflights.com's complete list of Destinations to make a difference: Top ecotourism impact spots at www.cheapflights.com/news/ top-ecotourism-destinations.

7 Family Cars That Deliver Excellent Gas Mileage Contributed Article AutoTrader.com

If you're interested in a new family car that won't cost a fortune at the gas pump, you've come to the right place. That's because we've rounded up seven of our favorite 2017 model year family cars that offer roomy interiors and excellent fuel efficiency just in time for Earth Day. And while our list mainly includes efficient gas-powered cars, we've also added a couple of cars with electric motors, too -- for the family that wants to be especially earth-friendly. We've also kept things to a reasonable budget of around $40,000 or less so that none of the cars on our list break the bank. Chevrolet Bolt The Chevy Bolt isn't just efficient; it's fully electric. And while its starting price of around $37,500 makes it more expensive than the other cars on our list, that figure is eligible for major tax credits, bringing it down to a much more affordable amount. Better yet, the Bolt can travel an amazing 238 miles between charges, which means most people won't have to adjust their lifestyles to fit the electric vehicle. And it offers just about everything a family might want, including a roomy, versatile interior, excellent technology (including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and all the latest high-tech in-

car safety features. Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid The Chevy Malibu Hybrid is an excellent midsize sedan that more shoppers should consider. With a base price of just $28,800, it's highly affordable for a hybridpowered midsize sedan -and it boasts an excellent 47 miles per gallon in the city and 46 mpg on the highway, which places it among the most efficient family cars on the market. It also touts a long list of standard equipment, including Chevy's MyLink infotainment system with a 7-in touchscreen, 17-in alloy wheels and 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity. Make no mistake: After lots of investment, Chevrolet has gotten the Malibu just right. Ford Fusion Energi There are two different ultra-efficient versions of Ford's popular Fusion midsize sedan. One is simply the Fusion Hybrid, which is an excellent car in its own right: It gets 43 mpg city/41 mpg hwy, and it offers a highly reasonable starting price of just $26,800. But we're especially recommending the plug-in hybrid Fusion Energi, which uses a combination of an electric powertrain and an efficient gasoline engine. The Fusion Energi can travel up to 22 miles on electric power alone -- but unlike fully electric cars, it doesn't shut off once it hits that number. Instead, the gasoline engine kicks in, extending

the sedan's range. With a base price of $34,100, the Fusion Energi isn't cheap, but it'll save you a lot of money at the pump. Honda Accord Hybrid The Honda Accord Hybrid is a truly excellent choice for shoppers interested in combining "family car" and "fuel efficient." The primary reason is its gas mileage numbers, which are amazing: At 49 mpg city/47 mpg hwy, it beats out every other midsize sedan -- and it even approaches the smaller Toyota Prius's fuel economy figures. And while the Accord Hybrid is on the pricey side for a hybrid midsize sedan, with a base price of around $30,500, it has excellent equipment: Even the base model has an infotainment system with a 7.7-in touchscreen, Bluetooth Audio, dualzone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry and an amazing list of safety features that includes forwardcollision warning with automatic braking and Honda's LaneWatch blind spot camera. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Although the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid's fuel economy figures -- 39 mpg city/45 mpg hwy -- don't quite equal those of the Chevy Malibu Hybrid or the Honda Accord Hybrid, the Sonata Hybrid offers some benefits of its own. One is pricing: With a base price of $26,900, it starts

Find more stories like this online!

www.ChautauquaStar.com

around $2,000 cheaper than the Malibu Hybrid, and nearly $4,000 cheaper than the Accord Hybrid. It also offers Hyundai's excellent warranty, which comprehensively covers the sedan for up to five years or 60,000 miles and also includes 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain protection. Finally, the Sonata Hybrid touts a roomy interior and a lot of excellent standard equipment -- including Apple CarPlay, automatic headlights, a 7-in touchscreen and dual-zone automatic climate control. Toyota Prius Although you might think of the Toyota Prius as a compact car, it's more versatile -- and family-sized -- than you might expect. The rear cargo area, for example, is much larger than a sedan's trunk, and it comes up just shy of Toyota's midsize Camry sedan in terms of rear leg room. Plus, you get a trade-off for that slightly smaller overall size: The Prius offers amazing gas mileage of 58 mpg city/53 mpg hwy if you get the Eco model, or 54 mpg hwy/50 mpg city if you spring for a regular version. Better yet, pricing

is cheap. The Prius starts at just $25,600, which means it's a great deal if you can fit your whole family inside. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is an excellent choice for shoppers who want something efficient without giving up the versatility and practicality of an SUV. Currently the only small crossover offering a hybrid powertrain, the RAV4 Hybrid seems to have it all. Fuel economy, for example, is an amaz-

ing 34 mpg city/30 mpg hwy, which dramatically outstrips rivals (the Honda CR-V, for example, returns 25 mpg city/31 mpg hwy). The RAV4 Hybrid also boasts standard all-wheel drive and surprisingly reasonable pricing that starts at just under $30,000 with shipping. No, it doesn't quite offer the gas mileage of some of the hybrid-powered sedans on our list -but it's an excellent choice for family car shoppers who especially prefer an SUV or crossover.
