4-H members to be evaluated on clothing and textile projects Contributed Article JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (June 20, 2018) -- Chautauqua County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Program is proud to have a variety of exhibits attend The Chautauqua County Fair each year. This week Chautauqua County 4-H members are preparing for the 2018 county fair to present over 700 animals, 1,000 non-animal projects, and to compete in several knowledge skills contests. 4-H provides a variety of quality youth development opportunities. One popular project is the sewing program. Sewing provides a variety of correlations to physical and psychological development. From a very young age sewing helps develop independence. Learning to sew can teach self-confidence and personal identity. Sewing is a skill that can teach mastery through a continued increase in difficulty. One sewing project that culminates in youth developing a great deal of self-confidence and mastery is the fashion revue and mannequin modeling program. This year Chautauqua County 4-H is proud to have 3 youth selected to attend the Great New York state fair with their sewing and fashion revue ensembles.

What is mannequin modeling? Mannequin modeling is poising almost like a statue while modeling a 4-H sewing project. Mannequin modeling will help develop poise, concentration, and self-confidence. 4-H youth in the clothing and textiles project will be having a fashion show and mannequin modeling at the 132nd Annual Chautauqua County Fair on Tuesday and Wednesday in the 4-H Exhibits Building. The 4-H Youth Development Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a community based educational organization, affiliated with Cornell University, Chautauqua County Government, the NYS SUNY system, and the federal government through the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. For more information, call 716-664-9502 or visit our website at www.cce.cornell.edu/chautauqua. Cornell University Cooperative Extension provides equal program and employment opportunities.

54th Annual 4-H Meat Animal Sale Set for July 20th

By Kate Ewer, 4-H Community Educator

DUNKIRK, NY (June 19, 2018) – Chautauqua County 4-H Youth Development will hold the 54th annual Meat Animal Sale at the Warren K. Brown Show Arena on the grounds of the Chautauqua County Fair on Friday, July 20th, 2018. The sale begins at 12:00pm noon. 4-Her’s across the county have been working hard since October to raise topquality animals for the annual sale. This year 70 hogs, 15 market goats, 15 pairs of market chickens, 40 lambs, and 30 steers will be available for purchase. Market animal projects offer youth a unique experience to learn animal husbandry, feed and nutrition, cuts of meat, how to train an animal to lead, and current industry standards for their species. Not all of the work is in the barn, however. Youth keep accurate medical, nutrition, and financial records for every animal project. They are also encouraged to market that animal to people in the community so that they are sure to get a fair price for their hard work on sale day. Are you a first-time buyer at the 4-H Meat Animal Sale? Don’t be shy! Arrive early and walk through the barns to see what animals you may be interested in. if a youth has approached you before the fair, be sure to stop in, say hello, and check on the animal you may be purchasing. Make sure that you get a sale book which lists in order every animal that will be sold during the sale. There are no bidder numbers—simply raise your hand and the auctioneer or a spotter will be happy to take your bid. Once the gavel falls and you have purchased

The 4-H Meat Animal Sale will take place Friday, July 20th, 2018 at 12:00pm. Pictured is Rachel Harper and the 2017 4-H Grand Champion Market Lamb purchased by Chautauqua Patron’s Insurance Company. The 4-H Youth Development Program is one of many programs offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County (CCE-Chautauqua). CCE-Chautauqua is a community based educational organization, affiliated with Cornell University, Chautauqua County Government, the NYS SUNY system, and the federal government through the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. the animal head down to the show ring for a photo. You’ll also be handed a clipboard with your sales receipt. You’ll need to fill out your contact information as well as processor trucking information for your animal. Once you purchase an animal it stays on display at the fair until Sunday when it is shipped to the processor of your choice. After your photo head into the Swine Barn where you can pay for your animal with cash or check. It’s just that easy! A small portion of every sale goes

to Chautauqua County 4-H. Youth development programming in Chautauqua County connects youth to hands-on learning opportunities that help them grow into competent, caring, contributing members of society.
