Special Volunteer Recognized, Evergreen Information Shared at Mental Health Association Luncheon certificates for 14 people for advancing phases in treatment court, four for graduating/ completing treatment court, and four for gaining employment. Cobb also announced plans for Treasured Gems Makeover Day hosted by REALiFE Church of Jamestown and Community Helping Hands on April 28. Cobb reminded participants that the Knitting for Wellbeing class at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays requires no experience or supplies and is open to both men and women. Other announcements were for a resume workshop and CASAC’s parenting classes. MHA Executive Director Kia Briggs recognized volunteer Amy Lynch for her significant assistance to MHA and to those in recovery. Lynch started volunteering in 2011 by offering help whenever she saw a fellow peer in need. Recently she has facilitated the group “Out of Control” every Friday at noon. The curriculum for this group is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, and looks at examples of daily situations for participants in recovery from both mental health and substance use problems. At the March Recovery Luncheon at the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County (MHA), volunteer Amy Lynch was recognized for her significant assistance to MHA and to those in recovery. Jamestown, N.Y. – Participants at the recent Recovery Luncheon at the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County (MHA) applauded those who achieved recovery milestones. MHA Associate Director Steven Cobb had

Ian Eastman, who coordinates The Exchange for Evergreen Health, spoke to the group about how harm reduction strategies are making progress towards reducing HIV and Hepatitis C. New HIV infections across the state dropped by 9%, which is significantly better than the national average. Evergreen Health provides free and confidential HIV rapid testing, with results provided in about 20 minutes. Eastman thanked MHA participants for participating in a Hepatitis C summit held last year in Jamestown. Their feedback was added to others around the state, resulting in Governor Cuomo making New York the first state in the country to commit to ending Hepatitis C.

Evergreen Health also provides quick and easy Hepatitis C testing. Evergreen Health in Jamestown now offers a treatment that fights the virus that causes Hepatitis C. A delicious luncheon was prepared by Jan Ball ladies from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Falconer. She was assisted in serving the meal by fellow parishioners Gloria Anderson and Terese Whitford. The peer-run organization offers support services to people with substance use disorders and all other forms of mental health diagnosis. The MHA works in collaboration with local treatment providers, other non-profits, community-based partners, and treatment courts to empower individuals in attaining their goals. In an accepting environment, it provides recovery coaching by certified peer specialists as well as support groups and classes. There is no charge for any of the MHA’s services or programs. Anyone with questions or in need of services for themselves or a family member is welcome to call or stop in. A couple of weeks ago, I had the task of making as many muffins as humanly possible for an Easter breakfast. Alright, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I did make around 125. This might not sound like a huge task, but when you only have two muffin pans, this is a half day event. Clearly I need to invest in my baking pan collection. Then again, it really isn’t that often that so many cupcakes or muffins come out of our kitchen. We’ve been tiptoeing the line between your typical at-home baker and bakery lately, but this isn’t the norm for me. I have made muffins from scratch before, but it had admittedly been a few years. Wanting to make a variety of blueberry and chocolate chip, I sought out a recipe for each on Pinterest. Very short into my search, I found a recipe that claimed to be the perfect base for any muffin recipe. Being just slightly skeptical of this kind of claim, I did a quick study of the various reviews of the

I pulled some of last summer’s blueberries from the freezer and started thawing them for the muffins. There were some suggestions for adding in fresh fruit, which I followed as closely as possible. The test batch was a resounding success. There were a few too many blueberries, but that was my own error, and did not reflect on the original recipe all that much. When your muffin mix is basically a bunch of blueberries with a light batter drizzle… that’s a sign that you might have too many blueberries. Oops. That’s how you learn, though! One thing that I did add, was a sprinkle of sugar to the top of the muffins, to give them that added crispness to the tops. I used about a tablespoon of granulated sugar for every six or seven muffins, but this is completely up to preference. The chocolate chip muffins turned out great too, but chocolate chips are not nearly as temperamental as squishy, sometimes frozen, sometimes fresh fruit can be. Without any further delay, here is a great base recipe for many muffins. The original recipe comes from thewholesomedish. com, and the original poster tried many more flavors than just chocolate chip and blueberry. 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tbsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt ½ cup granulated sugar 1 cup skim milk, or your preferred milk/milk alternative 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 large egg ¼ cup canola or vegetable oil cooking spray sugar for tops of muffins, optional 1-1 ½ cups of mix-ins (blueberries, chocolate chips, etc.) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place muffin liners in a muffin tin and spray with cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine. 3. In another bowl, add the sugar, milk, vanilla, egg, and oil. Whisk to combine. 4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; batter should be lumpy. Do not over mix. 5. If adding in additional ingredients, gently fold them in at this time, again, being careful not to over-mix. 6. Fill the muffin liners 3/4 of the way up. 7. If desired, sprinkle a small amount of sugar to the tops of the batter before putting in the oven. 8. Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Yields about 24-30 muffins. Muffins will stay fresh for about five days if stored in a moisture free environment, can also be frozen in a well-sealed container! If you are going to use a muffin addition that is not very sweet, like blueberries, it would be a good idea to roll that ingredient around in a little bit of sugar before you add it to the muffin batter. The baking powder will start to react as soon as the wet ingredients are added to the dry ingredients. So, it’s a good idea to have all of your additional ingredients prepared (ie. fruit peeled and chopped) before the batter is made.

Jackson and his legacy’s relevance to current events and issues, will host a panel of experts to address “Valuing Water: A New Deal for the Environment,” on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. The program will be presented at the Robert H. Jackson Center, 305 East 4th Street, Jamestown, and is free and open to the public. Donations to the Jackson Center annual fund are appreciated. Robert H. Jackson Center President Susan Moran Murphy made the announcement. This program is part of a GreenUp Jamestown series which seeks to “collaborate and cooperate with regional organizations that support conservation and sustainability.” In keeping with its mission, the Jackson Center will examine and share Justice Jackson’s lifelong bond with the environmental beauty of the region of the country. Growing up in Spring Creek, Pennsylvania and Western New York, Jackson appreciated from an early age the community’s responsibility to preserve the natural wonders that allowed him to fish, swim, sail, and camp in the area throughout his life. A 6:00 p.m. reception will be followed by the formal program at 7:00 p.m. Moderator Julia Craighill is a Jackson Center board member and an environmental

architect. Craighill will reflect on the involvement of her grandfather, Robert H. Jackson, as the attorney in a local environmental case in 1923 which eventually led to Jamestown’s decision to develop and execute a sewage treatment plan. She owns Ensight Consulting, which helps rejuvenate buildings and businesses with green programs and certifications. The program will proceed with presentations by Dr. Michael Shelly of the University at Buffalo’s RENEW Institute, UB School of Law Professor Kim Diana Connolly, and Save The River Executive Director and Upper St. Lawrence Riverkeeper Lee Willbanks. Shelly is an environmental economist with over 25 years of experience. He will discuss how economists actually determine the value of water based on use, production, waste, and recreational use, among other considerations. Dr. Shelly values the environmental benefits associated with both natural and engineered systems, and has also valued the health impacts of pollution. He has analyzed a wide variety of projects on five continents. The RENEW Institute is a university-wide, interdisciplinary research institute that focuses on complex environmental issues, as well as the social and economic issues with which they are connected. Professor Connolly will address the history of the Clean Water Act, issues related to environmental case law, and how policy is shaped by those decisions. She is the University at Buffalo School of Law’s Director of Clinical Legal Education, Director of the Advocacy Institute and Vice Dean for Advocacy and Experiential Education.

Connolly also studies, writes, and speaks about environmental and animal law policies, creatively examining and sharing ideas as to how to move toward a sustainable future. Lee Willbanks will discuss his work as a fresh water advocate and the value of water to First Nations people, among others. He has a law degree from Syracuse University College of Law and a Master of Public Administration from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Mr. Willbanks’s diverse career has spanned from being environmental counsel for an independent power producer to serving as chief of staff to a New York State senator. Save The River is a not-for-profit, member-based environmental organization with the mission to preserve, protect and restore the St. Lawrence River, one of North America’s most important rivers. The program will conclude with an opportunity for questions and answers. No. You’re going to use the microscope as a tool to see the details and body parts of the insects.” As part of the second graders English Language Arts unit on insects, and their science unit learning about the different tools scientists use, Ring Elementary School second grade teachers set-up microscopes for the students to view different parts of insects. The teachers had the help of Doug Foster, JPS Instructional Science Coach, co-planning the lesson to help to extend the content of both their science kits and ELA unit, while providing a hands-on, engaging experience that was motivating to the students. The activity reinforced the body parts of an insect that they learned about during the ELA read aloud. They explored how a microscope helps scientists and how the different lenses impacted what they saw while making inferences on how these different levels of magnification might help scientists. “I saw a fly wing and it had veins in it and I also saw spikes coming out of it,” said Ring Elementary School second grader Sahirys Santiago Torres. “I learned that insects have hair and every time they switched the magnification it had more detail in it. It’s fun to do this because you can see things that are really cool. Even things like germs that are invisible, if you put them in a microscope you can see them.”

After trying the microscopes, students choose to write either a compare and contrast paragraph or a descriptive paragraph to explain what they saw in the microscopes. In addition to the microscopes, students have also learned to use droppers, test tubes, scales and other tools for measuring, and magnifying glasses through their science kits. “Our team thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce them to a different tool by extending on their knowledge of magnifying glasses while also giving them additional skills that help them build their understanding and working knowledge of science,” said Mrs. Davenport.

On the third Sunday of the month, children two to eight years old and their favorite adult(s) can drop in anytime to Audubon’s Nature Play Area. Extra materials that change with the weather and season are placed in the play area, and a naturalist is present to answer questions and provide information. The next Nature Play Day is Sunday, April 15, 1 to 4 p.m., when adults and children can explore unstructured outdoor play in a safe environment and learn how to continue the nature play experience at home. Unstructured play outdoors is beneficial to a child’s physical and mental development as well as their understanding and appreciation of the natural world. However, concerns about safety, location, materials and the value of play are often barriers in creating these experiences. This program aims to inspire both kids and adults to make discoveries and feel more comfortable about the natural world through play. Adults are required to stay with their children, and they may want to bring a chair, snacks and water or a drink. Be prepared to play outside. Wear clothes and footwear that can get wet and dirty. Small Business Continues to Drive Our Economy

Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier Small business is big in Chautauqua County! 87% of all businesses in Chautauqua County employ fewer than 20 employees, with a total annual payroll of over $1.18 billion. These small businesses span all economic sectors from manufacturing to food service to healthcare, as well as retail and food service. These figures are from the US Census Bureau’s 2015 Business Pattern report. The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce is working year-round to promote local businesses and to reinforce the importance of supporting local business. Studies have consistently shown that shopping locally is good for our economy. It is estimated that for every $100 in consumer spending with a locally owned business, $73 remains in the local economy and is dispersed through local wages, charitable donations, taxes that fund local services, and purchases of goods and services through other local businesses. And it’s not just shopping that makes a difference. When you work with local providers for professional services, real estate, healthcare, and finance, you are also contributing to gains in our local economy. The Chamber delivers several services to its members to help drive both foot traffic and internet traffic into local businesses. I will touch upon two of them. For several years the Chamber operated a gift check program and this past year transitioned to the Shoptauqua Gift Card. This program has had a $2.6-million dollar impact on our local economy, and that’s growing every day. Over 100 businesses in Chautauqua County participate in this program. An important part of our work to support local businesses is the efforts of our six Community Chambers of Commerce and the more than 100 volunteers who work to coordinate locally-based events that help to drive foot and internet traffic into our small business members and build business-to-business connections. Hanover Community Chamber Appreciation Luncheon April 12

The Hanover Community Chamber of Commerce Annual Appreciation Luncheon will be held Thursday, April 12 at The Colony Seafood and Steakhouse, 876 Main Road, Irving. The Dunkirk and Fredonia Community Chambers of Commerce will jointly host the annual Grape Expectations Wine Festival, Friday, May 11. Several local wineries will participate, along with vendors featuring theme-appropriate products. A Plastic Ocean, a 2016 documentary spotlighting the impact of bottled water on ocean pollution, will be shown at Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus on April 23. The film screening, free and open to the public, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Carnahan Center Theatre. The documentary is one of the films featured in the Our Planet, Our Choice film series sponsored by JCC’s sustainability committee and the Earth Awareness Club. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins. According to researchers, these toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and are eventually consumed by humans.

JCC’s Jazz Fest Will Feature Chaplin Silent Picture Show Contributed Article

Virtuoso pianist Tom Roberts and clarinetist Mary Beth Malek will present the Charlie Chaplin Silent Picture Show during Jamestown Community College’s annual Jazz Fest on April 20. Admission to the 7 p.m. performance in Scharmann Theatre is $4, general public, $3, area students and senior citizens, and $2, JCC Faculty Student Association members. Tickets can be purchased through JCC’s box office, 338.1187, or online at campusstore.sunyjcc. edu. Roberts and Malek will perform live music as an accompaniment while silent films featuring Charlie Chaplin are shown. Roberts will discuss the musical scores he wrote for the films. Roberts, who is also a composer and arranger, performed on The Tonight Show and A Prairie Home Companion. He was pianist for Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, recent Grammy winners for the Boardwalk Empire soundtrack, and arranged and performed the music for the The Aviator soundtrack and several titles for DeLovely. He has also arranged music for the syndicated PRI show Riverwalk Jazz, Live from the Landing with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and a number of pieces for Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Roberts was also the featured pianist at

the International Stride Piano Summit in Zurich, Switzerland in 2001 and 2009. Roberts performed twice at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2003, once with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops. He was featured in 2003 in solo with Dick Hyman at the prestigious Jazz In July series in New York City. Roberts has recorded over 40 compact discs and has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. He tours worldwide, performing with bands from New Orleans and New York, including the Original Dixieland Jazzband and the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble. Roberts is also a versatile music historian with a special focus on the early jazz era.

Malek is principal clarinetist for the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra. And also performs with the Pittsburgh Opera Theatre and Civic Light Orchestra. She also performs as a chamber musician with the Zaffiro Trio and Diamante Trio and maintains an active clarinet studio. Malek teaches at the University of Pittsburgh and Chatham University and taught previously at Seton Hill, West Liberty, and Carnegie Mellon universities. The performance is sponsored by JCC’s arts, humanities, and health sciences division, music department, and college program committee.
