I used a mini, because I cooked only the beef and sauce in the crockpot.
Just a note concerning the ingredients, you can always substitute the cream cheese for Neufchatel cheese, and sour cream for reduced fat or even plain greek yogurt. Place soup, water and worcestershire sauce in crockpot, then whisk together. This is also the time to add pepper or any other seasonings that you enjoy. Cut up small cubes of cream cheese, and stir into mixture. Add beef. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. About 30 minutes before dinner time, start preparing water for your noodles. Cook CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

2015 has been a year filled with hard work and good results. Each year, the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers Association set out to be an essential component of your business operation. You invest in us and deserve no less from us than our best effort. We trust that once again this year that is just what you have received. With a look back through our Five Point Focus, here are some of the year’s highlights. As we continue to drive foot traffic to your door and increasing business for our members, we are proud to have delivered more than 2.3-million web-based referrals to Chamber members in 2015. Our Small Business Saturday marketing efforts and ShopTauqua Chamber Gift Check project have delivered intensive and focused messaging around supporting local businesses and keeping the economic impact of our holiday purchases directed squarely at our local economy. The Gift Check program alone has achieved a more than $3-million economic impact in Chautauqua County. By coordinating more than 15 events that bring together over 1,100 business leaders to share ideas and create contacts, we are helping to increase sales and business-to-business activity. In-person networking remains a critical part of our model, while social media is playing an even larger role in networking online for all businesses. The Chamber continues to work in both arenas to establish the best possible
Chamber Corner leads for our members. For the third year in a row we have supported our member restaurants through CHQ Restaurant Week, highlighting the variety of local dining options available right here in Chautauqua County. Over 100 community based activities were organized by the County Chamber and our Community Chambers throughout the year all designed to bring customers together with local businesses. In order to help contain health insurance costs and provide the best possible options to our members we have reached more than 300 business groups and sole proprietors in the past year to help them access the insurance products that best fit their needs. This year, we were able to expand our private health insurance exchange to provide greater consumer choice and include more plans from more insurance carriers. We also built upon our strategic alignment with Lawley Benefits Group to help medium and large companies remain in compliance with government requirements, analyze data, implement wellness programs, and control costs. Our advocacy role continues to focus on areas that will help to reduce property taxes and build our tax base. We advocated strongly in the past year for development of the Northern Chautauqua Regional Water District. Working in partnership with the Local Economic Development Committee, the County Executive, and local labor groups, we were proud to support this crucial project which will enhance infrastructure in order to expand the tax base and retain and grow industry in our county. We are pleased and proud to see the pieces falling together for this vital water system and look forward to greater developments in the year ahead. In addition, we continue to support the repowering of the NRG Dunkirk power plant which still needs our support in the wake of a lawsuit that threatens its very existence. The Chamber also continues to support economic, tourism and workforce development. With a tremendous focus on education in the past year, our Dream It Do It manufacturing career initiative has reached more than 20,000 young minds in our school districts since the program began. This year DIDI placed interns, facilitated teacher work experiences and coordinated tours of manufacturing and technical train-
ing facilities. Additionally, the Chamber and MAST is facilitating the Chautauqua County Education Coalition which is funded primarily by the Cummins Foundation, Cummins Jamestown Engine Plant, and the Sheldon Foundation and includes more than 60 organizations and 88 leaders countywide. The Coalitions aligns people and resources to focus on improving kindergarten readiness and aligning students with career opportunities here in Chautauqua County. In addition, we have partnered this year with the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau and the Industrial Development Agency to promote the I Love CHQ Video contest and to seek ways to enhance the overall visitor experience here in Chautauqua County. All told, it has been a fruitful year. We thank all of our members for their ongoing support in 2015, and look forward to another productive year ahead. Happy Holidays! Chamber Congressional Lunch Rescheduled for January 29 Each year the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce provides an opportunity for local business people to meet with our Congressman. Representative Tom Reed will participate in the annual Chamber Federal Congressional Lunch on Friday, January 29, at Shorewood Country Club, West Lake Road, Dunkirk. The event will begin at noon, and we encourage our members to come with questions for the Congressman. This event is sponsored by Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Fredonia College Foundation, Fredonia Place, Jamestown Mattress Company, Lawley Insurance, Nestle Purina PetCare, OBSERVER, The Post-Journal, WCA Hospital, and WJTN/WWSE/WKSN/WHUG/WQFX. The cost is just $18 for Chamber members or $21 for non-members. To register, please call the Chamber at 366-6200 or 484-1101, or visit our website at www. chautauquachamber.org. Doors Open Jamestown is January 16 Once again this year, attractions in the Jamestown area will open their doors for free, to give local people a chance to see for free what hundreds of tourists pay for each year. Doors Open Jamestown is set for Saturday, January 16 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Participating CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Keeping The Faith
Rev. Michael Lokietek Family Church Fredonia fcfredonia.org
Dear Pastor, it’s that time of year. How should a Christian approach New Year’s resolutions? With most of the Christmas obligations done the household is returning to a more usual order. With the New Year just ahead, many people traditionally take this opportunity to put their life in order as well, and make life-improving resolutions. Some people want to lose weight, be closer to family, or get their finances under control. As Christians, we want to make sure that whatever we do has a Biblical foundation and is pleasing to God. Proverbs 29:18 tells us that "Where there is no vision, the people perish.” A vision is a goal or idea for the future. Without goals, the quality of our life will not be as good as it should be. It’s important, therefore, for Christians to set goals. Setting goals helps us to plan and achieve. Having a goal is like having a targeted vacation destination; it keeps you going in the right direction! The Apostle Paul, whose missionary
work spread the Gospel throughout the known world, was guided by goals. In the Book of Philippians (3:14), Paul said, "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Paul’s life and ministry were marked by a single goal of fulfilling God’s purpose for his life, and he disciplined himself to obtain it. The Lord Jesus Christ also had a goal for His life. The Bible says that the goal and purpose of bringing salvation to the world allowed Jesus to endure the cross and fulfill the plan of God (Hebrews 12:2). If Jesus and Paul had goals, it must be beneficial for us to have goals, too! It seems perfectly allowable, then, for a Christian to have (and keep) New Year’s resolutions. But rather than only coming up with our own, maybe we should be seeking out what God wants for us this year. In Matthew 6:33 God promises, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This scripture promises us that putting God’s desires first, will always result

in His taking care of our other daily concerns. If you and your family seek God’s plans and purposes, then set godly goals and discipline your lives to reach them, you’ll surely be blessed! Not a bad way to spend 2016!

Junior Guilders Entertain Tanglewood Group Residents
Carnahan Honored As ‘Employee Of The Year’ At Hultquist Place
Contributed Article The Tanglewood Group
Two of the Tanglewood Group’s residences recently welcomed performers from The Junior Guilders of the Lucille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown for evening programs that included festive holiday songs. 20 of the group’s 43 members performed for residents on two consecutive nights in December – first at the Frewsburg Rest Home followed by a second performance at Tanglewood Manor the following night. Frewsburg Activities Director Brittany Anderson notes that the residents enjoy all of the groups that come in and share their time and talent, especially the musical performers. “Music is a common comfort among the residents and they love the chance to see the younger generation performing songs that they can sing along to.” she explains. “We truly appreciate the time that these kids, Director Helen Merrill, assistant director Patti Dechow, the parents, and our dear friend Lucy Miller give to the program and community.” The Junior Guilders are entering their 34th season as a local performance group and have entertained for seniors the entire time that they have been in existence according to Mrs. Merrill. She says that the children and their families enjoy these holiday programs and look forward to them every year. “The children are always amazed when the audience sings along with them.” She says. “The residents enthusiasm makes it that much more fun for them. One of the highlights of these programs is the chance that the performers have to visit with the residents after the show.” The Guilders perform throughout the year both locally and across the United States, as well as on their own stage at the Lucille Ball Little Theatre in Jamestown. The group’s extensive repertoire varies with each season. For more information contact Mrs. Merrill at 716-665-5750 The Tanglewood Group offers a variety of entertainment to residents at each of its locations throughout the year. CHAUTAUQUA LAKE CELEBRATES INCREDIBLE YEAR By Stefan Gestwicki Star Sports Editor w/ contributions from CLCS
Chautauqua Lake Central School recently held a ceremony to honor its state qualifiers and All-State selections from the 2014-2015 athletic season. What made this year’s ceremony extra special was the sheer number of banners being raised in the school’s gymnasium — 16 of them, to be exact. “The 16 banners that were raised from last year exemplify the hard work put forth by our coaches, athletes and parents,” CLCS athletic director Josh Liddell said. “At Chautauqua Lake, developing and sustaining the athletic program has been important to our school board and superintendent,” Liddell continued. “In addition to their full support, the community has rallied around our sports teams and has been influential in our improvement process. Parents and community members have worked with our coaches to get some great youth programs up and running. Our athletes are now coming to the modified and jayvee levels with a solid, fundamental skill set. Another key to our success has been the addition of students from Ripley. When they arrived at Chautauqua Lake, our teams saw some substantial improvements. The studentathletes from Ripley have been key pieces to the puzzle for many of our teams.” The following is a list of banners raised: - Football, Section VI Champions - Football, Class C South Division Champions - Football, NYS Western Regional Champions, 11-1 record

SELF-PROCLAIMED EXPERT PICKS, CONT. FROM PAGE 9 that began the season 1-4 and well… looked like trash. Lately, they’ve been dealing with a quarterback carousel of sorts. Brandon Weeden won for them last week, for goodness sake. Even with that, DeAndre Hopkins is likely going to go over 1,500 yards for the season. The guy is a heck of a player. The Texans need this game and they’re at home. No contest. PICK VS. SPREAD: N/A. STRAIGHT PICK: Texans.
TENNESSEE TITANS (3-12) at INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (7-8) Go Titans! You’re on pace for the No. 1 pick in next year’s draft. You’re about to finish off a twoseason stretch in which you went 5-27. That’s so incredibly pathetic I can barely process it. Oh, and Zach Mettenberger has been playing quarterback for the past two games. It’s probably a small miracle that he’s only thrown three interceptions in those two games. The Colts still have a chance to win the AFC South, but the odds are a mere 0.03 percent. To put that another way, those are about 3,300 to one. They need 10 games to break the right way, including their own, of course. The fact that Charlie Whitehurst is going to be taking the snaps under center is probably not a good start towards making that fraction of one percent. Maybe next year, guys. PICK VS. SPREAD: N/A. STRAIGHT PICK: Colts.
WASHINGTON FOOTBALL
TEAM (8-7) at DALLAS COWBOYS (4-11) Washington is headed to the playoffs. It might even finish the season above .500. Now there’s something that seemed impossible a few weeks ago. Three straight wins have, if nothing else, proven that Washington is the best team in a putrid NFC East. Kirk Cousins has been extremely hot of late and should continue it against a terrible Cowboys secondary. Dallas has had injury problems, sure, but this is a bad football team from top to bottom. The offensive line is great, but the defense, quarterback and running game are all below average at best. At least Kellen Moore led the offense to…zero touchdowns. And if you think Tony Romo will ever play a full season again, you’re only fooling yourself. I suppose Washington wins, though it doesn’t change seeding. PICK VS. SPREAD: N/A. STRAIGHT PICK: Football Team.
serving a one-game suspension, too. He needs just 104 yards to reach 1,500 for the season. Both of these teams are quite awful, but it’s still a rivalry between two proud franchises. This shouldn’t be the borefest you might expect. PICK VS. SPREAD: Eagles (+3). STRAIGHT PICK: Giants.
DETROIT LIONS (6-9) at CHICAGO BEARS (6-9) Both teams might actually be better than their records. PICK VS. SPREAD: Bears (even). STRAIGHT PICK: Bears.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (6-9) at CAROLINA PANTHERS (14-1) Tampa is no longer interesting. For a team that was picking No. 1 in last year’s draft, six wins is a pretty nice PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (6-9) jump, but three straight losses to at NEW YORK GIANTS (6-9) teams below .500 have really put a Remember a few weeks ago when damper on the entire season. Those this looked the game that was going are games that teams ready to take the to decide the division? Now all it’s next step should win. going to decide is which team gets Carolina finally lost, thank goodto pick higher in next year’s draft. It ness. I’ve been claiming all season will also determine which team gets that there’s no way the Panthers are to play the third-place NFC teams going undefeated. I had doubts after instead of the second-place teams they held on against the Giants a next season. Yes, that’s all there is to few weeks back. Cam Newton will this game. probably still win NFL MVP, but he The Giants at least have a storyline was pretty bad against the Falcons. or two to watch. Tom Coughlin has It’s fair to wonder how Carolina will won a pair of Super Bowls in New deal with its first bit of adversity. It York. Normally that would ensure sure sounded like some of the players that a coach gets to go out on his own were a little sore after the loss. terms, but this is New York we’re The Panthers need to win to clinch talking about. This is a what-havethe No. 1 seed in the NFC. They’ll be you-done-for-me-now franchise. playing hard. PICK VS. SPREAD: Odell Beckham will get to play after Bucs (+11.5). STRAIGHT PICK:
Panthers.

fi w O a d a B OAKLAND RAIDERS (7-8) at h KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (10-5) N The Raiders are on the verge of hav- T ing a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard V rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver. S That’s Derek Carr, Latavius Murray and Amari Cooper, respectively. That’s a good offense by any measure, but when you consider the fact that each of the three players are aged 25 years or younger, Raiders fan really do have reason to be excited. S The Chiefs are on the verge of his- A Y tory. This is a team that began the season 1-5. Now, with a little help, s s Kansas City can actually still win the division. Yes, if Denver loses and a KC can win this one, the Chiefs will c be crowned AFC West champions. c Even after losing Jamaal Charles, the s Chiefs are seventh in rushing yards. t This is a well-balanced, dangerous a T football team. The Chiefs are shooting hard for the A division title. PICK VS. SPREAD: a Raiders (+7.5). STRAIGHT PICK: p Chiefs. y P p d N i w SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (4-11) P at DENVER BRONCOS (11-4) The Chargers misery is almost over. If there was ever a candidate for a bounce-back team, this will be it next season. The offense was crushed by injuries. They’ve dealt with rumors about the team moving all year. They just fined their fan favorite All-Pro safety Eric Weddle for watching his daughter at halftime. Ugh. Ugly, ugly season. The Broncos kept their hopes of a

NFL PICKS, CONT. FROM PAGE 10 first-round bye alive with a comeback win over Cincinnati last week. Brock Osweiler threw for nearly 300 yards against a stout defense. The Denver defense put the clamps down after allowing touchdowns on the first two Bengals drives. Now all it takes is a home win and they get next week off. No problem. This seems like a no-brainer. PICK VS. SPREAD: Broncos (-9). STRAIGHT PICK: Broncos.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (9-6) at ARIZONA CARDINALS (13-2) Yes, Seattle just lost to St. Louis. You saw that right. The Seahawks will still be in the playoffs and will still be a dangerous team, but any team that can get pressure on Russell Wilson can beat Seattle. Seattle isn’t nearly as scary on the road, either. It’s possible that Seattle won’t see another game at home until next season. Losing Thomas Rawls was a brutal injury. Arizona still has an outside chance at the No. 1 seed in the NFC after pummeling Green Bay last week. And yes, they thoroughly pummeled the Packers. The Cardinals are a complete team. I would be shocked if they don’t win the Super Bowl. Neither team has a whole lot to gain in this game, assuming the Panthers win their game earlier in the day. PICK VS. SPREAD: Cardinals
(-4.5). STRAIGHT PICK: Cardinals.
Locals Shine At Karate Tournament
ST. LOUIS RAMS (7-8) at SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (4-11) If you’re watching this game, go out and get a hobby. PICK VS. SPREAD: Rams (-3). STRAIGHT PICK: Rams.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS (10-5) at GREEN BAY PACKERS (10-5) Hey, what do you know, a game that actually matters. The winner of this game will be crowned the NFC North champion and earn a home playoff game. Adrian Peterson needs just 82 rushing yards to reach 1,500 for the season. The Packers have been hard to figure out over the past few months. They looked great in these two teams’ first matchup, a 30-13 Green Bay win. The Packers won’t have a 1,000 yard receiver or a 1,000 yard rusher. This just isn’t the same offense that we’ve grown accustomed to in Green Bay. The Packers aren’t good, but they’re better than the Vikings. PICK VS. SPREAD: Packers (-3). STRAIGHT PICK: Packers.

A number of karate students from the Family Martial Arts Center participated in a tournament at the Kempo Karate Center in Springville on Dec. 19. The tournament gave all the participants an opportunity to experience Kata and sparring among students at their own rank and levels. “I have been a marital arts instructor for a couple of decades and this group performed and displayed such a fantastic amount of confidence and determination,” Master Sensei Bill Matteson said. “They all ranked very high in each of their divisions and proved that practice and trust is essential for a positive future.” For more information about programs and community service at The Family Martial
Arts Center, call 680-1121 or visit www. thefamilymartialartscenter.com. CLCS RAISES BANNERS, CONT. FROM PAGE 8 - Girls Softball, Section VI Champions, 13-7 record - Cody Latimer, Golf, Section VI Second Place, NYSPHSAA Top Ten - Trent Howard, Track and Field, Section VI Champion, NYSPHSAA State Qualifier “Chautauqua Lake was very fortunate to experience a year in which so many of our most talented athletes earned the recognition of their peers and the community at large,” superintendent Ben Spitzer noted. “Their success was a rare combination of quality studentathletes demonstrating the best they had to offer and outstanding coaches who gave their all to support their teams and team leaders.” Liddell echoed the sentiment that none of this could have been possible without
coaches that supported their players both on and off the field of play. “One of the most important things we have been able to do is recruit good coaches who are passionate about winning and doing it the right way,” Liddell said. “Every summer the coaching staff meets to set athletic goals for the coming year. For example, the year’s goals focus on academics, leadership, character education and improving individual team win-loss records. Part of the coaching evaluation process aligns with their ability to reach these goals. That being said, right now I think we have one of the top coaching staffs in the area.” Congratulations go out to all of the athletes, coaches and supporters that made Chautauqua Lake’s memorable 2014-2015 season possible.
