Family Church Mayville Holds Water Baptism in Chautauqua Lake Contributed Article Family Church Mayville
In Matthew 28:19 Jesus commanded the Apostles to, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." He also demonstrated that water baptism is a righteous act as He was water baptized by John the Baptist over 2,000 years ago. On Sunday, August 23rd more than 50 people gathered from Family Church Mayville to watch as 16 faithful church members and believers in Jesus got baptized at the Mayville Lakeside Park. The congregation along with many bystanders watched these men, women and children profess Jesus as Lord as Pastor Jeff Mitchener baptized them by submersion in Chautauqua Lake. The baptism followed the regular Sunday Worship service where Pastor Renée Mitchener taught about the true meaning of water baptism as described in the Holy Bible. Baptism by submersion is symbolic of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was a very moving experience for all involved and a very special day for those who partook of the baptism. It is the heart of the Family Church pastors to see the Bible taught to this region in a way that brings light and revelation to everyone. Family Church Mayville welcomes visitors Sunday mornings at 10:30 at 32 S. Erie Street in Mayville. For more information please visit www. fcmayville.org or find us on Facebook.

Rev. Michael Lokietek Family Church Fredonia fcfredonia.org
Dear Pastor, I did some stupid things and can’t get past them. How do I move on?
Keeping the Faith I’m sorry that this has been so difficult for you but please know that it’s not God’s will that you be struggling about this. Living in the past can rob you of any future peace and victory and will most definitely keep you from fulfi lling your God given destiny. Let’s look to the Word of God for the answers to your dilemma. There are two parts to the problem of forgiveness. The first is understanding and believing that God has made forgiveness possible. According to the Bible, God made it available for all His Believers. Colossians 2:13 declares, “And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.” Notice that the forgiveness mentioned is past tense and includes ALL sin. Jesus ALREADY did this through His death and resurrection. If Jesus already did this then we must believe that it’s available to us. Like a cook who opens the refrigerator and sees all the ingredients
for his dinner neatly tucked on the shelves, our righteousness through Jesus has made available everything we need! All forgiveness, all healing, all provision, all strength and peace is already there. So the issue isn’t that God doesn’t have forgiveness for you. The second aspect of the forgiveness process is that we must receive what’s been provided! It’s important that we remember that we have a part to do in this process. Let’s look at James 5:15-19 which says, “And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise Him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” Notice that right after the forgiveness of sins is declared “confessing” is mentioned. Taken in the broader sense, even our Salvation cannot be obtained without repentance and confessing to God. This isn’t saying that you need to shout all your business to anyone around, but it does indicate the importance

family church F R E D O N I A
of repenting to God in prayer. This will guarantee that He hears your repentance for what happened and your request for forgiveness. But like the passage above, it must be received by faith. Next time: more on the faith to forgive.

September is whole grain month and a great time to get you and your family on the whole grain train. Make half your grains whole or eat at least 3 servings of whole grains every day. Why? CHAUTAUQUA STAR FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2015
Cooking holds the ability to relax the stressed, and reinvigorate the weary. Let it be your release from the world. Have fun. Turn on your favorite song, start a dance party, make the kitchen messy. Let your shoulders come down, and your worries fade into oblivion as your meal comes to life. Open up the REAL kitchen; the place where husband and wife come together in community, and relationships between parent and child are tightened. Usher in the spirit of love around food you create, and it will be sure to nourish your body in ways a normal “meal” cannot.
As my mentor David Jack says “When intentions of love and sharing go into creating a meal, the food itself is secondary in importance”. There is a distinction between healthy eating and fast food that goes far beyond their nutritional difference. Think of how fast food is eaten. Often times it’s gulped down in the car on the way home from practice or in the living room gathered around the TV. Healthy, home cooked meals are the exact opposite. They are appreciated when eaten, and consequently bring families together when laid on the table. The times I spent with family, enjoying a home
cooked meal are some of my favorite memories. I remember walking into the house, and being hit with the scent of food we were about to eat. It didn’t matter if had Mac’n cheese or a salad, the ATMOSPHERE made the meal. The people in the room made the memories meaningful. Gathering at the table opens opportunities to listen to the words of loved ones, and speak life into those around you. For parents, it’s some of the best time you get with children. You come together for a common cause, focused on things other than self. Food has always been known to bring people
together. It allows walls to fall down, and hearts to be melted over good conversation. Indeed it’s about more than nutrition, it’s about bonding, family, and love. I challenge you to eat one more meal at the table this week. If your number is normally four; go for five. If you’re at zero; start with ONE. I understand you’re busy. But I ask you to take this challenge and watch how fast relationships in your household begin to strengthen. Cooking is an investment in time, but more importantly it’s an investment in family. Fitness Can Be Greater.
Get On The Whole Grain Train control diabetes. A whole grain food includes 3 - 5 times the vitamins and minerals that a refined or enriched grain does. Some whole grains also contain anti-oxidants the equivalent to vegetables! Remember antioxidants are great immune system builders and prevent heart disease and cancers. Believe it or not many whole grains are a good source (10% of your daily value) of protein and iron, in addition to containing the more commonly known B-vitamins and fiber. B-vitamins promote healthy skin and for pregnant women promotes healthy babies while fiber helps keep you full and keeps your digestive system working regularly. So what is a whole grain? A whole grain is a grain that includes the entire seed - the bran, germ and endosperm
- when processed for making foods. Refined grains like white flour do not include the whole seed. Grains are refined to extend the shelf life, so when eating whole grains be sure to store them properly and use in a timely fashion so you can get their true value. Common examples of whole grains include whole wheat bread, oatmeal and wild rice. When shopping for foods, look for the term whole in front of the grain in the list of ingredients - like, whole-grain barley, whole wheat, wholegrain corn, whole oats, whole rye; also wild rice, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, millet, popcorn, quinoa and rolled oats are all whole grains. Multi-grain, stone ground, bran and cracked wheat are NOT whole grains. More and more foods at the store will have a whole grain symbol -
remember the real seal that signified real milk product? well, there is a whole-grain symbol now to signify whole grain foods. The symbol looks like a postage stamp with a brown border and golden background - it says “100% Whole Grain”, with a picture of a sheaf of grain. In might not be easy to start to add whole grains to your diet, but you will be glad you did - again, you will feel full longer and your meals will be more flavorful, not to mention all the health benefits! Here are some tips to adding to your everyday eating. Substitute your usual cereal with a whole grain cereal for breakfast. Cheerios is made with oats and are whole grains while Rice Krispies and Fruit Loops are not whole grain, for instance. Instead of white bread or deli bread, look for
whole wheat or rye bread. Have wild rice or brown rice as a side dish instead of white rice. Try a new grain like quinoa, sorghum or spelt. Type in “recipe with quinoa” to your favorite Internet search engine and you will be amazed at all the options. Experiment at home with your own recipes and use oat flour, buckwheat or millet when baking. Add barley to your favorite soups and stews. Finally, I have noticed at the local supermarkets and restaurants it can be challenging to find whole-grain selections. The good news is that we, the consumer, drive the market so, let’s get together and ask the grocer to offer more whole grains and request whole grains every time we eat out and before you know it we will all be healthier!

Since the 2000 study by the State University at Buffalo which found the use of pets to significantly decrease blood pressure in high risk patients, when combined with medication many pets have come in and out of hospitals to visit with the patients as well as assist in their therapy. Dogs seem to be the most common therapy pets. “We have discovered that when a patient is working alongside a therapy dog, they don’t even realize they are having therapy,” said Terri who has overseen the program since its introduction at WCA. “Our pet therapy dogs are used for many different forms of therapy including stroke patients who need work with the side of their body that has been affected by a stroke. They are encouraged to pet the dog with the weak side of their body which assists in range of motion. Patients who have mental health and chemical dependency conditions bond with the dog and this form of therapy leads to a reduction in anxiety—a form of behavioral therapy. Our program has also helped patients, young and old, to communicate more effectively.”

Opera House Cinema Series to Screen “Mr. Holmes”
Contributed Article 1891 Fredonia Opera House
The next feature fi lm in the Opera House Cinema Series is “Mr. Holmes,” starring Ian McKellan as a nonagenarian Sherlock Holmes. It will be screened on Sat., Aug. 29, and Tues., Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m. “Mr. Holmes” is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. It’s1947; and an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late. Peter Travers, in Rolling Stone calls the fi lm “a riveting character study of a lion not going gentle into winter.” Kenneth Turan, in the Los Angeles Times, calls it “an elegant puzzler that presents the sage of Baker Street dealing with the one
thing he’s never had to contend with before: his own emotions.” Steven Rea, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, says “‘Mr. Holmes’ is about how the past defines us. It is also very much about regret and trying to put things right.” John Anderson, in Newsday, says “McKellen is masterful, in a multilayered tale that navigates the no man’s land between memory and fiction.” Rated PG for thematic elements, some disturbing images and incidental smoking, “Mr. Holmes” runs 104 minutes. Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that because Fredonia’s Farm Festival is being held the same weekend, patrons to Saturday’s screening are advised to arrive early and plan to

Who Is The Quarterback? By Stefan Gestwicki Star Sports Editor
The Buffalo Bills have a number of position battles still raging after two preseason games. The wide receiver corps is muddled thanks to nearly everyone being hurt at some point. The exact same can be said for running back, though we certainly have a better idea of which players will be on the roster come Week 1 against Indianapolis. The offensive line is uncertain, for better or for worse. The quarterback position, however, is clearly the most uncertain while simultaneously being the most important position on CONTINUED ON PG 26

COMMENTARY, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 25 the team. So which of the three (sorry Matt Simms, you don’t count) will be the starter? Will all three of them be on the roster? Let’s take a moment to break down the three candidates for the starting quarterback job: Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel. Right now, they’re listed in that order on the Bills’ depth chart, for whatever that’s worth. First there’s journeyman Matt Cassel. Cassel is 6-foot-4 and 33 years old. He was drafted out of USC in the 7th round by New England in 2005. He served as Tom Brady’s backup for three seasons before being forced into action in 2008 when Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury. Cassel thrived on a very good Patriots team. His completion percentage was outstanding at 63.4 percent. He threw 21 touchdowns against just 11 interceptions and was just short of 3,700 passing yards. His quarterback rating of 89.4 was more than respectable. Somehow the Patriots didn’t make the playoffs despite winning 11 games, but that hardly seems like Cassel’s fault as much as a case of wrong place, wrong time. That performance earned Cassel a big contract to be Kansas City’s starting quarterback. The first season didn’t go so well as Cassel’s quarterback rating plummeted to 69.9 with 16 TDs and 16 INTs. His second season in KC, however, was his career best. He had a fantastic 27-7 TD-INT ratio and a quarterback rating of 93.0. Those are some stellar numbers any way you slice it. The next two seasons were marred by injuries and inconsistency. He played only 18 games in 2011 and 2012 combined. He failed to crack a 60 percent completion percentage and threw just 19 touchdowns against 18 interceptions. He went to Minnesota and it was more of the same. Last year he was supposed to be the starter while rookie Teddy Bridgewater got acclimated to the league, but Cassel broke his foot, Bridgewater took over

and never gave the job back. So here we are. The Bills seem to look at Cassel as the steady head. He’s viewed as the “safe bet.” This despite the fact that he has a career 59.0 completion percentage and a pedestrian (at best) 96-70 TD-INT ratio. Those aren’t game manager numbers, those are just bad numbers. Alex Smith, the prototypical “game manager” has a career 12276 TD-INT ratio. That’s significantly better and Smith can run a bit, too. Cassel is a statue back there. In case you’re wondering, I don’t want Cassel to start. So then there’s Tyrod Taylor. Looking past the fact that the guy’s name is Tyrod (seriously, I can only imagine he’s best friends with Guns and Roses frontman Axel Rose), there seems to be quite a fan movement for Taylor to be the starter. But why? I can’t quite understand it. Taylor is 26 years old. He’s 6-1 and 215 pounds. He was a 6th round pick in the 2011 by Baltimore out of Virginia Tech. In four years as Joe Flacco’s backup, Taylor has thrown a total of 35 passes. Zero of those came last year. Five came in 2013. So yes, this is a guy that has completed one pass in the last two seasons combined. To be fair, Taylor had flashes in the Bills’ last preseason game. He
showed that he can escape the pocket and pick up yards with his legs. But he also showed a lot of what he showed in college — that he can escape the pocket and throw the ball out of bounds. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes throwing out of bounds is the right play, but that shouldn’t be your signature play. I understand why Taylor is the popular pick among fans. He represents the unknown. Cassel is the embodiment of everything the Bills have had over the past few seasons. How is he different from Kyle Orton or Kevin Kolb? Obviously those same fans have seen enough of Manuel to make up their mind on him. But Taylor? He theoretically brings excitement. Some fans equate excitement to wins. I, however, do not. People look at a guy like Russell Wilson and would like to think that Taylor could be a similar player to the diminutive Super-Bowl-winning Seahawk. I look at Taylor and see another E.J. Manuel — a guy with some physical tools, but will never be good enough to be even an average NFL quarterback. That leaves our old pal Manuel. Listen, I wrote in 2013 that I wanted the Bills to draft literally any other quarterback besides Manuel. I’ve seen nothing to change my mind in
the two-plus years since. Physically, Manuel is a force. He’s big and strong and fast. He also seemingly can’t read defenses very well and makes poor decisions on where and when to throw the football. His accuracy is putrid on top of everything else. And you know what? He might be the Bills’ best option to win games this year. He’s the guy that already has a rapport with guys like Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins. He’s the guy with the most experience with center Eric Wood. Experience with a center is no small thing, either, especially when it comes to a two-minute offense, etc. Manuel is still only 25 years old and entering just his third NFL season. The league has changed so much over the past 10 years that people just expect a quarterback to be able to step in his rookie year and dominate. Well, that’s really not the norm. Much more often a guy will learn and develop just from being around the league for a few years. Do I think Manuel is suddenly going to be Steve Young? Far from it. But of all the three quarterbacks, I think Manuel best understands what’s being done here in Buffalo. Listening to Manuel in interviews gives me the impression that this is a matured young man that has developed some serious leadership ability. Let’s not forget that Manuel was the team’s first-round pick in 2013. I would never suggest that a guy should start just because he was a first-round pick, but Taylor and Cassel were sixth and seventh round picks, respectively. Clearly the physical tools from the get-go have favored Manuel. He’s two years removed from the knee injuries that plagued him during his rookie season. He also knows this is probably his last shot in Buffalo. I never thought I’d say it, but I think E.J. Manuel should be the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. Now make sure you cut that out and rub it in my face when Taylor leads the team to the Super Bowl.
