Our goal is to spend an hour with eight small business members each month in both Dunkirk and Jamestown to better understand their needs, what service gaps may exist, and to communicate our programming and value proposition one-on-one. These regular meetings with Chamber President and CEO Todd Tranum are a supplement to our regular discussions and meetings with members. The main objective is to get feedback from our small member businesses to learn how we can better serve them. If you are a Chamber member and are interested in participating in one of our 8@8 business events, please call the Chamber at 366-6200 or 484-1101.

Westfield’s Grape Discovery Center Has “Grape Expectations” for 2017 Great things are happening at the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield, NY. Got the winter doldrums? Come visit and enjoy our exhibit room, tasting bar and retail shop. There is never an admission fee! Located in Westfield at 8305 West Main Road (Route 20), the Grape Discovery Center promotes the wine and grape industry in this region. Recently the Center was awarded a Farm Winery License allowing the Center to sell New York State wines, spirits, craft beer and cider by the bottle for consumption off premises. Previously, only wine was available by the glass, and law required it be consumed at the Discovery Center either in the tasting room or on the beautiful outdoor patio overlooking the vineyards. Visitors to the Center have increased steadily since its opening three years ago, and many visitors were disappointed they could not purchase a bottle of wine. “It’s been quite a journey for the Center to be able to achieve this goal, but with the support of Senator Cathy Young and State Assemblyman Andrew Goodell, our license has arrived,” says Christina McKane, manager. “Thanks to their help in obtaining this license, visitors will be able to make a purchase and enjoy these locally made beverages in their hotel rooms or homes,” she added. The Center is in the process of building its inventory to have these new items available to visitors. And that’s not all that’s happening at the Center! Several events are already on the calendar for the upcoming months. For example, three Thursday evening events are scheduled beginning February 16 as Bob Green of the Mercyhurst Wine & Culinary Institute conducts a “Tasting Series for Wine, Spirits and Craft Beer.” Still in the planning stage is a March 24 event entitled the “Grape Discovery Center Wine & Culinary Dinner Experience with Pairings from the Tasting Series.” A “Children’s Happy Easter Party” is scheduled from noon to 3:00 p.m. on April 15th. The Easter egg hunt begins at 1:00 p.m. You won’t want to miss the visit from the Easter Bunny. Come one, come all. Hosting a small get-together? Book our tasting room and outdoor patio overlooking the vineyards for a small donation to the Center. The room will accommodate up to 45 people. Visit www.grapediscoverycenter.com for hours of operation and details on fees or registration requirements for these and other upcoming events or call Christina McKane, Manager, at (716) 326-2003.

The collaboration of JCC’s Center for Continuing Education and University at Buffalo’s The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (UB TCIE) plan to offer Lean Boot Camp and Root Cause Analysis and Correction Action courses at all three JCC locations this spring. This 18-hour course provides a foundation in Lean practices that are applicable every day, to any role, and are appropriate in any type of industry, from manufacturing and private sector businesses to public service organizations. Through tips, tools, interactive discussion and hands-on activity, participants will leave with the basics to make meaningful performance improvements. Concepts will be reinforced through group workshop exercises. The instructor for these courses will be Peter Baumgartner, PhD. As UB TCIE’s Operational Excellence Director, Mr. Baumgartner is a resident expert in the Lean Six Sigma methodology and tools who has delivered substantial, validated hard and soft savings across a variety of projects in finance, medical devices, insurance, food services, building materials, publishing, and other service-related industries, as well as manufacturing. He has nearly 10 years of experience with a global company in

serving as the lead on a multitude of process improvement project teams that have delivered record performance in yields, cost reduction, quality and

Live at the Met Season Continues with Verdi’s La Traviata FREDONIA – Live at the Met, the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live, high definition (HD) opera transmissions to theaters around the world, continues its 2016-17 season at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House on Sat., Mar. 11, at 1 p.m., with Giuseppe Verdi’s classic La Traviata. La Traviata survived a notoriously unsuccessful opening night in 1853 to become one of the best-loved operas in the repertoire. Following the larger-scale dramas of Verdi’s Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, its intimate scope and subject matter inspired the composer to create some of his most profound and heartfelt music. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva sings one of opera’s most beloved heroines, the tragic courtesan Violetta, a role in which she triumphed on the Met stage in 2015. The title role of the “fallen woman” has captured the imaginations of audiences and performers alike with its inexhaustible vocal and dramatic possibilities – and challenges. Violetta is considered a pinnacle of the soprano repertoire. Yoncheva sings opposite Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo, and Thomas Hampson as his father, Germont. Nicola Luisotti conducts. The production has a run time of two hours, 55 minutes with one intermission. Live at the Met telecasts are now shown in more than 2,000 theaters in 70 countries, making the Met the only arts institution with an ongoing global art series of this scale. The Met was the first arts company to experiment with this type of broadcast, beginning on a modest scale in 2006 and growing every season since then, with more than 10 million tickets sold to date. Met Opera stars serve as hosts for the series, conducting live interviews with cast members, crew and production teams, and introducing the popular behind-the-scenes features; altogether, the worldwide audience is given an unprecedented look at what goes into the staging of an opera at one of the world’s great houses. Individual tickets to each of the operas in the season are $20, ($18 Opera House members, $10 students). A flexible subscription of eight tickets which can be used however you want – one at a time to eight different operas, all at once for

eight people, or anything in between – is available for $142. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera.org. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or Opera House staff member. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a member-supported notfor-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.fredopera.org. Kathleen Colby, Director of Training Services at the Chautauqua Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Council, will present this foursession multicultural video and discussion program from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 1, 8, 15, and 22. This early intervention will increase school readiness as you learn the importance of developing language skills, increasing vocabulary, and providing positive learning opportunities during early brain development. You will also learn the stages of development – why your child acts like he/she does, how to keep a child safe, how to bond with your child, the importance of self-care, and how you can discipline your young child.
