Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier

The Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier and Dream It Do It Western New York are proud to participate again this year in National Manufacturing Month during October. There are a number of events planned in observance, beginning with a professional development day on Friday, October 6. Attendees will hear presentations from Dream It Do It and Jamestown Community College, watch cutting edge technology videos, tour the Manufacturing Technology Institute @ JCC, participate in building hands-on projects and tour manufacturing facilities. Other events are planned for the month as well. October 19 is Women in Manufacturing Day at Cummins and October 20 is the Jamestown High School’s Academy Days. On October 27 Manufacturing Month will include technology tours where students from a variety of school districts will tour manufacturing facilities in the County. Similar programming is being coordinated in Cattaraugus County throughout the month of October. These events and programming are designed to celebrate modern manufacturing and inspire the next generation of manufacturing workforce. Dream It Do It WNY focuses on encouraging students to consider careers in manufacturing. The Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier launched Dream It Do It to help address the workforce needs of manufacturers. Manufacturers have identified a skilled workforce as a critical component of supporting and expanding our community’s manufacturing base. For more information about Manufacturing Month in Chautauqua County contact Jehuu Caulcrick, Chautauqua County Coordinator for Dream It Do It, at 484-1101 or at jcaulcrick@didiwny.com.

Local Agriculture Is an Economic Driver Chautauqua County has a diverse agricultural base as well as a long and proud history of farming. There are several remarkable statistics associated with agriculture in Chautauqua County. Did you know that Chautauqua County ranks #1 in New York State for number of farms at over 1,500, or that the total market value of agricultural products from Chautauqua County is over $161-million annually? Those are substantial numbers, considering that just 35% of the county’s total acreage is farmland. Our location in the midst of the Lake Erie grape belt is important economically and agriculturally. 250 grape growers in our county produce 90,000 tons of grapes in a typical year, with a value of over $22-million. While the beverage industry is flourishing here, mainly due to our excellent grape growing season, wine is just one of many products to result from Chautauqua County grapes. Others are used to produce juices, jellies, and other products worldwide. Dairy farmers in Chautauqua County produce enough milk to exceed the local demand. Production of milk here can serve nearly 700,000 people, with much of our local product being shipped to processing plants in Northwestern Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio. This past week, our region added aquaculture to that list, with the opening of Timberfish Technologies in Westfield. This new “fish farm” uses waste materials from the adjacent Mazza winery and distillery to help raise fish in a high technology, environmentally friendly way. Our natural resources, such as rich soil and a climate fed by our proximity to the open waters of Lake Erie, make Chautauqua County one of the most important agricultural counties in all of New York State. Our farm products are dominated by dairy and grape production, but don’t stop there. We are also a significant source for the sales of cattle, vegetables, fruits, and maple products. The beautiful rolling hay fields and grape vineyards are pleasing to the eye and an amazing backdrop for lakes and commerce centers, yet in reality these landscapes represent a major economic driver. In the spirit of our branding initiative Shoptauqua, we encourage you to look for locally grown agricultural products when shopping, and to support our local wineries and beverage producers.

Opera House Presents FREE Multimedia Lecture as part of Freedonia Marxonia The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present The Marx Brothers on Broadway: 1924-1929, a unique multimedia presentation by noted “Marxist” Noah Diamond, on Thur., Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The event, which is presented in collaboration with the State University of New York at Fredonia’s Freedonia Marxonia celebration, is FREE and open to the public. After Vaudeville, before Hollywood, the Marx Brothers were the toast of Broadway. Their three legitimate stage musicals, I’ll Say She Is, The Cocoanuts, and Animal Crackers, established the team as the darlings of the New York smart set and the preeminent jesters of the Jazz Age. These three musicals formed the basis of everything the Brothers did on film, and therefore, of modern American comedy itself. All three shows have had noteworthy afterlives, with The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers adapted as films starring the Marxes in 1929 and 1930, and I’ll Say She Is finally enjoying its first theatrical revival in New York City in 2016. In this entertaining and enlightening presentation, Diamond conveys the history of this classic trilogy through video, sound, images, and live recordings. Diamond adapted the book and lyrics of I’ll Say She Is and played the role of Groucho in the show’s 2014 FringeNYC and 2016 Off Broadway productions. He is the author of the book “Gimme a Thrill: The Story of I’ll Say She Is” (BearManor Media, 2016), and served on the committee for the 2014 NYC Marxfest, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Marx Brothers adopting their “o” names with a month of activities throughout New York City. Diamond has a long history of playing Groucho, on and off the stage, and has written and lectured extensively about the Marx Brothers and their work. Noah Diamond’s appearance in Fredonia is supported by the Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation and the Hahn Family Freedonia Marxonia Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation, which funds Freedonia Marxonia, the annual festival that celebrates the Marx Brothers and their 1933 movie Duck Soup, set in “Freedonia.” For a complete schedule of Freedonia Marxonia events, visit www.fredonia.libguides.com/marxonia. Opera House Presents FREE Screening of Marx Brothers’ “The Cocoanuts” The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present a screening of the classic Marx Brothers comedy The Cocoanuts on Fri., Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The event, which is presented in collaboration with the State University of New York at Fredonia’s Freedonia Marxonia celebration, is FREE and open to the public. This is the third consecutive year the Opera House has presented a Marx Brothers film as part of Freedonia Marxonia. In keeping with this year’s theme of “Broadway and the Marx Brothers,” this year’s film is The Cocoanuts, based on the Brothers’ 1925 Broadway musical of the same name. Released in 1929, this is the Marx Brothers’ first feature motion picture. Morrie Ryskind adapted George S. Kaufman’s book of the musical. Irving Berlin wrote the songs. The Freedonia Marxonia festival, created by a student at the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1987, celebrates the Marx Brothers and their 1933 movie Duck Soup, set in the fictional country of “Freedonia.” It is funded today by the Hahn Family Freedonia Marxonia Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation. For a complete schedule of Freedonia Marxonia events, visit www.fredonia.libguides.com/marxonia.
