Message From The Head Of School The 2007-2008 school year should go down as one of the most strategically important years in CHCA’s 20 years in operation and in my two decades in education as well. Sensing the need for a major change in the way we do business was essential to long-term sustainability…and your Board rose to the challenge. What The Major Challenges Were: • Enrollment at the kindergarten level in particular had been falling over the last five years. The price point was just too high.

Randy Brunk Head of School

“Thank you for standing with us as enrolled families, alumni, donors and special friends. We trust you have been and will continue to be blessed by what you experience as a result of being a part of the CHCA

family.

• More day care facilities and preschools in the area were adding kindergarten programs, thus presenting us with more competition. It also became clear that not all of these preschool-based kindergarten programs were properly preparing students for a CHCA 1st grade education. • Our annual tuition increases were beginning to take an increasing portion of our families’ discretionary income, and this was not sustainable in the long term. • Overall, the school-aged population is shrinking in the United States and we cannot simply count on enrollment coming to our doorstep to fill our classrooms. • Because we have a high success rate in securing enrollment from families that take a look at CHCA for their child’s education, we needed to find more ways to get parents to check us out. • We needed a regular and consistent feedback system to ensure a quality experience for every family. • We wanted to ensure that CHCA was running a “tight ship” fiscally, making sure that spending was done wisely and economically to ensure a high quality, Christ-centered education for our students consistent with our vision, mission and values. • We made a commitment to pray. It is our hope that students and entire families will be forever changed as a result of being a part of the CHCA community. We want to be faithful to Him in our service at CHCA and leave ultimate sustainability in His capable hands.

How We Met Those Challenges: • SoaringStart Preschool. After much planning and research in the 2007-08 school year, we launched a 3- and 4-year-old program in the fall of 2008. We are currently at capacity in this program and it has been a wonderful success. • Enrollment Map. On faith, we increased spending on a strategic marketing blitz that was specifically designed to get the word out about CHCA and ultimately to get families on campus. It worked, and we experienced a record number of inquiries and a 54 student jump in our enrollment over the trend line projections. With 32 new students in our preschool, we had a significant enrollment jump at the start of the 2008 school year. As an additional blessing, we were able to secure donations to fund the enrollment map.

• Tuition Restructuring. We took a look at tuitions throughout our program and adjusted them to levels that would increase interest at the critical “feeder” levels, contributing to the rise in enrollment stated above. • Bond Financing. We were able to gain low-interest financing for our new construction projects. Promise Campaign proceeds will be invested in a fund to ensure financial security in potentially turbulent times. In addition, we were able to negotiate some interestonly payments for the first three years which would allow us to help fund the tuition restructuring while enrollment builds back. • Facility Improvements. The completion of the Promise projects in the 2007-08 school year and into the fall of 2008 has helped to improve the quality experience for students. We are seeing a great deal of excitement and increased quality of education as a result of these projects, not to mention convenience brought on by the new parking lot addition. • Communications and Feedback. Through a new Parent Ambassador program, surveys and coffees, we are gaining valuable feedback on the education our students are experiencing each day. • Armleder Students. We continue to see a maturation of our relatively young Armleder program. Academic scores and extracurricular offerings are growing and now we have 8th grade students receiving up to 8 scholarships per year to attend the North Campus for high school. What an enriched community we are as a result of our urban campus. Suffice it to say it was a miraculous year. We saw God move in mighty ways and we are reaping the fruit of some significant faith steps. I congratulate the Board for not simply waiting to see what would happen or presuming upon the Lord’s favor, but rather stepping out boldly in faith and dramatically changing CHCA’s financial and ministry path. We are excited about what the future holds. Our economy is in for a rough ride, so we are once again planning and preparing for what may confront us. Thank you for standing with us as enrolled families, alumni, donors and special friends. We trust you have been and will continue to be blessed by what you experience as a result of being a part of the CHCA family. Pray with us for wisdom and for God’s favor as we move boldly forward.

Highlights From CHCA’s 2007-08 School Year What sets CHCA apart from other schools, besides the fact that it couples high academic standards with a Christian worldview? Some say it is the outstanding level of parental involvement and support. Others claim the stellar Fine Arts program, the beautiful facilities, or the wide variety of extracurriculars and sports options allow for a special school experience. While these are all elements that contribute to CHCA’s uniqueness, it is the students who are the real stand-outs. In 2007-08, these well-rounded kids took advantage of every opportunity presented to them to learn, to lead and to serve others. Consequently, for their efforts some received accolades and recognition which at the middle and high school levels often translated into scholarships and money for college. Along the way, at every grade level students served those less fortunate here and abroad, often putting other’s needs before their own. Here are just some of the highlights from CHCA’s 2007-08 school year.

<

Taking home the State title and setting a new school record in the 4x800 relay race were David Curtin, Kyle Neyer, Andrew Wallace and Nick Williams. (see photo on front cover)

One would assume a certain level of parental anxiety at the prospect of trusting their child’s education to an unproven institution whose idea of an acceptable classroom facility for their 18 newest enrollees was a modular unit on the school’s front lawn. Not so. “We understood the vision: excellence in academics with a Christian influence. We also knew the people involved would make sure the school was great, and it was,” says Phyllis. CHCA Core Value

We believe in Stewardship & Accountability

When it comes to Accountability and Stewardship, especially as we face uncertain economic conditions, all parts of the CHCA community have an important role to play. Our faculty and administration work to make the education and whole school experience highly valuable to students and families. Students engage in and out of the classroom to enrich the value of the CHCA experience for themselves and their peers. The Administration and Board do all they can to keep tuition as affordable as possible for all families. All school employees work diligently to find areas to cut costs without sacrificing the quality of the education. The whole CHCA community acts as ambassadors for our school in order to increase our enrollment which decreases the price of tuition. Everyone appreciates and takes the highest care of our facilities and grounds with which our school has been blessed. Families participate in fundraising efforts as their resources allow in order to close the gap between tuition and school expenses, while everyone pitches in by volunteering their time and talents.

Several years ago, the school obtained bond financing in order to retire previous higher interest debt and to fund several new initiatives. The Board determined that the amount of bond financing required was very reasonable considering the assets of the school and debt carrying capacity of the budget. We have accessed the full amount of approved bond financing and now will turn our attention to the rapid reduction of balance. As you can see, the debt should be retired at a steady pace until it is completely paid off in the next 18 years.

We believe in a vibrant sense of community

Whether we are talking about the relationship between teachers and students, students and their peers, or parents with other parents, CHCA has the feel of an extended family and it is the people in it that make it so. They are the reason for its vibrancy. I don’t imagine there are many places in the city where the teachers pray for the kids like ours do, or come in early and stay late to help them with their schoolwork, or attend their sporting events. I cannot think of a school where students are more caring about each other, cheering each other on and praying for each other in times of trial. The parents are the same way. When there is a death or an illness in a school family, the CHCA community rallies enmasse to provide food and support. The new Parent Ambassador Program is simply an organized approach to what has already been going on in this community for years: families reaching out to other families with comfort and prayer.

A look at our Expenses Our people are our greatest asset. CHCA has an incredible staff that is well qualified and committed to Christian education. Two years ago, we began a five-year compensation equalization program for our faculty with two express purposes. First, to ensure they are fairly compensated relative to their peers at CHCA. Second, we targeted area schools and determined that we should be at 85% of the average salaries for the public school districts in which we compete for quality teachers. Additionally, we desire to be at 100% of the average salaries that our independent school friends are paying. In order to retain and attract quality staff, we must be willing to pay a salary which attracts them to CHCA.

A look at our Revenues Tuition and Fees make up a lion’s share of our income stream. State Auxiliary Funds also provide a great deal of revenue. Beyond those sources, we are heavily reliant on the generosity of donors to keep our revenue stream strong. Non-tuition revenue is essential to keep tuition from rising too fast.

A look at Our Enrollment

1400

CHCA enrollment growth has been nothing short of miraculous. The school reached optimum enrollment several years ago, allowing us to focus exclusively on strengthening our programs to enhance and broaden each student’s development opportunities.

CHCA Core Value

We believe in Academic Excellence

Academic excellence charges the CHCA teaching community to offer meaningful, engaged, and effective learning integrated with theological principles. Meaningful learning provides instruction linking new learning to prior knowledge; engaged learning sees students actively representing their understanding through performances, collaboration, research and writing; effective learning stands up to measurement that compares students’ performance against their peers locally and nationally. The school is in its fourth year of implementing Understanding by Design, an instructional

approach which emphasizes three stages of planning: identifying desired results (enduring understandings), determining acceptable evidence (assessments), and then planning the sequence of learning experiences and instruction. We strive for academic excellence because it honors God.

academic excellence

Our worldview is Christian and our academic programs reflect this in a vital and systemic manner. Karen Smeltzer, Curriculum Director 11

Spirit of Service, Heart for God Draw Bru and Bill Haslem, lagging behind as they round up their children, spot the group of workers and make a beeline toward them. “Let us help you with that,” says Jane, as she drops her armload of coats and begins loading merchandise into boxes. Bill, meanwhile, starts disassembling tables. When out of the corner of her eye Jane spots her three children and their friends, she motions for them to help. With nary a complaint, the kids get to work. Erik heads out into the cold with his dad to load up the van. Lauren carts off some of the heavier boxes while little Rachel sorts the unpacked merchandise and places it in containers. With the teardown complete and the transport van loaded, the five Haslems get in their vehicle and follow the crew to the high school, making quick work of the unloading process.

our efforts.

The Bruns clan shares a few things in common with the McSwain Family. Like the McSwains, the Brunses have multiple branches from one family who claim CHCA as their school of choice. In both cases, there is an obvious closeness that exists between all of the adults (whether sibling or in-law) and the conversation is fastflowing and constant. Similarly, the two families have interesting stories to share about how they came to be at CHCA. The Bruns family’s arrival on the scene in 2003 began with Jane (Bruns) and husband Bill Haslem, and their three kids: Erik, now a senior, Lauren (10th) and Rachel (4th). Two years later, Jane’s brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Linda Bruns, and their two kids, Sarah (now in 4th) and Patrick (2nd) joined the CHCA family. New to kindergarten this year were twins Katelyn and Suzanna, children of Gregg and Laura Bruns. While their history with the school does not go as far back as that of the McSwain’s, their support for the vision and level of commitment and involvement warrants the comparison as illustrated in this most recent example. It is a very cold December night and CHCA Elementary School’s Christmas concert, held at Montgomery Community Church to accommodate the large crowd, has just ended. As the crowd streams out and the building empties, a crew of three (two volunteers and one CHCA staff member) begins the two-hour process of tearing down their make-shift spiritwear store. Jane

This unsolicited act of kindness and service is business as usual for the family. In 2007, they received the Silver Presidential Service Award, presented to families who stand out as exceptional givers of their time and energy to the community and the world. Over the last six years, CHCA has been the recipient of much of that giving, not only from Jane and Bill Haslem, but from the rest of the Bruns family. While the men have preferred to do most of their volunteering behind the scenes at events like Celebration, COSI, Fall Festival and the building of CHCA’s Living Nativity, the women have chosen more visible roles. Take Jane, for example. Her extensive list of volunteer activities have included classroom volunteer, PTF Treasurer, PTF President, Celebration Chair, Appalachia Winter Term parent leader, Serve-a-thon Data Manager, After Prom Treasurer, PTF Wardrobe Wear Bookkeeper, and the list goes on. Just as involved is her sister-in-law Linda, who has served as Data Management Chair, Data Entry Trainer and Check-out Coordinator for Celebration; PTF Treasurer; AHG Leader; weekly classroom volunteer; and helper with the Bible Quiz Team and COSI on Wheels. Being new to the school, Laura prefers activities that keep her close to the twins, like volunteering weekly in both classrooms and helping out with field trips and class parties. Even the grandparents, Norb and Pat Bruns, have joined in the fray, volunteering at the school alongside their adult children.

uns-Haslem Family to CHCA A conversation with the Bruns women Asked to explain how and why three branches of one family could come to the same conclusion about a school, the Bruns women, at times amusing and often poignant in their responses, said it best. Editor: Linda, I understand it was you who told Jane and Bill about CHCA. How did you know about the school since your children were not yet of school age at that time? Linda: “I am such a planner that I started searching for a school when our daughter Sarah was only three. I toured over a dozen schools all over Cincinnati but I had narrowed it to about five for Tom and I to seriously evaluate. I had my heart set on CHCA because of the curriculum, the fact that Biblical principals were a huge part of daily learning, and that it was Bible-based and not any specific religion. We toured the school together and he felt the same way. We were so sold at that time we drew our circle around CHCA to find a home within 10 minutes of the school. I called Jane (who was living in Anderson at the time and was looking to switch schools for Erik and Lauren) and told her of an upcoming CHCA Open House. She and Bill went and that started it all.”

Jane, what did you learn at Open House that sold you? Jane: “When Bill and I returned from the CHCA Open House the first question my Mom asked me was ‘Do you think you could fit in there?’ She helped me understand that if we sought a school that had the right values and priorities and was filled with teachers and families working to achieve them, our hopes could be fulfilled despite how foreign it appeared at the beginning. Our decision was cemented by the fact that we felt our children could get excellent academics along with faith formation threaded throughout their entire school experience. The size was also appealing for our upcoming high schoolers since CHCA is large enough to offer lots of choices, but small enough that a child could realistically participate in lots of them.”

Laura, it could not have been an easy decision for you and Gregg to send your twins here, knowing you’d get hit with a double digit tuition bill your first time out. Laura: “We knew we wanted to send our children to a Christian school. Our decision to send the girls to CHCA was based mainly on the feedback we were hearing from Jane, Bill, Tom and Linda. Everything was so positive and you could see it reflected in their kids. In fact, I remember at one of our family functions a couple of years ago,

Linda and Tom’s daughter Sarah volunteered to say the prayer before dinner. There were about 15 of us gathered at the table and she didn’t hesitate for one moment. She closed her eyes, bowed her head and spoke from the heart. It was beautiful and I remember being amazed at how comfortable she was in her faith at such a young age.”

Jane and Linda, in the years you two have been here, you have racked up a lot of volunteer time. What keeps you motivated to do so? Linda: “Tom volunteers for COSI every year and he was putting up and taking down the Living Nativity with Bill before our kids even started at the school. I volunteered originally at the school because Jane kept volunteering me for things! Because of my background in Accounting, Finance and Data Management, she got me involved in Celebration. Then I took over the PTF Treasurer position after her. The other things I got involved with because of the kids. We are so involved in the school because of the fellowship we receive from other families. I am involved in a 2nd grade Mom’s Bible study group as well as a 4th grade Mom’s Bible study group and I wouldn’t give it up. “ Jane: [Laughing] “First, I didn’t volunteer Linda, just suggested volunteer needs that fit her skills beautifully. But seriously, being involved in the school is a way for me to get closer to who’s in front of our children 7 hours a day. In the beginning we knew no one and I looked for things that exposed me to teachers, administrators and families that our children would interact with. I wanted to know them beyond what they showed on ‘open house days’ to see if they delivered what the Admissions process described. Once exposed I was convinced that CHCA’s heart was in line with those promises. In following years there were three things going on for me. First, I wanted to be a part of the incredible things happening at this place since it just looked so fun; second, CHCA became a family focus since it provided a common spiritual grounding point for us all; and lastly, God used CHCA as a way for me personally to use gifts He’s blessed me with to unlock potential in others. It is so fulfilling to watch God’s work unfold and to know that, in some way, He used me to accomplish it.”

Laura, you had a lot of information from your sisters-in-laws prior to enrolling your twins. Is there anything about CHCA that came as a surprise to you? Laura: “The sense of community here. It’s not just a school. There are so many warm and loving people that I have met, both parents and faculty at EBL. From Mr. Bagby greeting us at the door every day to the teachers who hug and comfort my children when they are upset, to the parents who have opened their homes to class gatherings, playdates, and family dinners. I really have fun here and feel like I belong. I know my children feel that way, too.”

Jane, what part has the school played in your children’s Christian education? Jane: “The phrase ‘Christian worldview’ has moved from an abstract concept to having hands and feet. Our kids include God in their lives along with family, friends, teachers and coaches. He doesn’t sit on a shelf or live in a church only to be seen on weekends - they naturally converse in prayer; consult in times of conflict or trial; use values they’re being taught to evaluate movies they watch, comments they observe or choose a course of action that honors the value in others. CHCA has also broadened their perspective of the world through Winter Term opportunities, exchange students in the HS and exposure to people and teaching with faith traditions different from their own. CHCA has provided a safe environment to raise our children surrounded by a community that shares our vision and supports our efforts.”

Laura, after six months at CHCA, have you and Gregg made the right decision following in the others’ footsteps? Laura: “I want my children to feel comfortable in their faith like their cousins do. I am really amazed every time I attend chapel and see these kids worshipping and praising God and they don’t hold back. They sing as loud as they can, arms outstretched. They dance, they play music, all to the glory of God. It brings tears to my eyes to watch my own children join in with such spirit. I know they are in the right place.”

Tammy Richardson, High School Guidance Advisor

The International Student Scholarship Fund was awarded for the first time in the 2007-08 school year. Bill Schott, the man behind the scholarship, put it into place to enable one student from Central or Eastern Europe to come to CHCA for a semester each year. Barbi Pikaliova, a 16-year-old from Slovakia, was the first scholarship recipient. She spent a semester at CHCA while in the 10th grade. Schott wanted to bring students over to Cincinnati and felt Barbi was the perfect candidate with which to start. “I knew her stepfather, Karesz, when he was a college student and came to the United States on a work visa,” he says. “Later, I visited his family in Europe and got to know his kids. We thought it would be great to have Barbi come to the U.S. to study.” Bill has come to know and love Central Europe thanks to his many visits to the region and friendships with people like Karesz. To him, this Bill Schott scholarship seems like a natural extension of the relationship he wants Americans to have with the formerly Soviet nations. “It’s interesting to think that just 20 years ago, areas like the Czech Republic and Slovakia were communist. I want these students to have opportunities to travel abroad that their parents didn’t,” Bill says. “Our cultures share much, and hopefully we can remind ourselves of that through this program.” Schott only knew of CHCA through some neighbors and what he heard in the community. “I’d always read good things about CHCA in the news,” he says. “I decided to start the scholarship here because I knew this school was keeping faith a part of the curriculum, a rare thing at most schools these days.” It didn’t matter to Bill that he didn’t have kids or grandkids at CHCA – he just felt that it was a great place to introduce students from overseas to a new way of learning. Awarding the International Student Scholarship marked the start of a renewed focus on bringing international students to CHCA. “One of the things I love about having a growing number of international students here is that it brings the global perspective to our students,” says Wendy Easterday, CHCA Admissions Counselor. “We’re trying to create global learners and critical thinkers, and having students here from around the world is a great way to do that.” Barbi is not the first student to come to CHCA from another country, nor will she be the last. For the 2008-09 school year, students came to us from Brazil, Germany, South Korea, China, Vietnam, and the Czech Republic. They join students living here as residents from the United Kingdom, Mexico, Spain, South Africa, France, Canada and the Netherlands.

Named scholarships like this one can be started with a minimum gift of $50,000. For more on scholarships at CHCA, contact the Development Office.
