Unleashing a lifelong passion to learn, lead and serve
Promise Statement Centered in the shared love of Christ, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is the college-preparatory, preschool through grade 12 independent school that inspires and challenges students to discover, hone, and steward their one-of-a-kind gifts as they come to know themselves as distinct and unconditionally loved creations of God. CHCA’s vibrant, multi-denominational family of learners creates a sheltering—but not sheltered— environment where, supporting each other and guided by expert Christian teachers, students wrestle with increasingly complex, timeless, essential questions in order to strengthen their minds and their faith. Beginning with the end in mind, CHCA graduates young adults fully prepared to succeed in college and beyond; to engage effectively and lovingly with different cultures, viewpoints, and ideas; and to achieve significant impact and influence with discerning wisdom, courageous curiosity, and resilient Christian faith— where others pull back, they lean into life.

A Message from the Board of Trustees Treasurer
Beshear Family (L to R): Ben’97, Lindsey, Logan ‘29, Campbell (PK4)
On behalf of the Board of Trustees Finance Committee, I am pleased to report that once again our independent auditor, BKD, LLP, has issued a “clean” opinion regarding Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy’s (CHCA’s) financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018. In this Annual Report on philanthropy, you will find the consolidated financial statements as well as graphic representation of revenues and expenses, which illustrate the financial health of CHCA. The Board of Trustees strives, in its deliberations and actions, to support the mission, values, and traditions of CHCA, and to foster healthy long-term growth and strategic development of our programs. Our vision for the future is focused on consistently enhancing the quality of our instruction, student/faculty engagement in an everchanging world, and building a strong thriving community. Your contributions allow us to realize these ongoing imperatives, and helps us maintain our financial strength in support of our vision. As we work to support and fund initiatives for learning, faculty support, facilities, financial aid, academic enrichment, arts, athletics, and environmental programs, we are deeply grateful to you for your trust, your gifts, and your time. Moving forward with our eye on the future of CHCA, we assure you that the Board of Trustees remains focused on maintaining the highest level of education and student engagement in an academically excellent, Christ-centered institution. We ask for your continued prayers over our school community. As always, we welcome your feedback. Blessings, Ben Beshear ‘97 Treasurer, Board of Trustees

Message from the Board of Trustees President You may have noticed that CHCA’s recent marketing messaging centers around the idea that students can “Find their Place and Pursue their Gifts”, that students have opportunities to “Choose More” at CHCA, and that they have the opportunity to “Be More”. Over the course of our family’s time here at CHCA, it has been both exciting and rewarding to see that play out for our daughters and their peers.
Van Jura Family (L to R): Abby ‘22, Jodi, Brian, Anna ‘18
From its very beginning, the mission of CHCA has been ambitious and inspiring. The school’s vision statement declares: Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy will unleash each student’s God-given gifts through Christ-centered academic excellence. We are devoted to developing the whole person, and instilling a lifelong passion for learning, leading, and serving. What sets CHCA apart from other institutions is that along with this vision is a culture that not only inspires each student to discover, develop, and unleash their God-given talents – but also comes alongside each other, cheering each other on in community and in support. CHCA is a manifestation of Romans 12:5 which states, “so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” It is an ongoing imperative of the Board that each student, family, and faculty and staff member at CHCA feels that they have a place and they belong. We’ve seen this manifest in such moments as the faculty and staff retreat that was held this past summer, students serving together through intersession, homeroom parents bringing families together, a new family ambassador program kicking off, and the list goes on. And none of this is possible without the support of the community operating as one body. The 2017-2018 Annual Report on CHCA’s philanthropy seeks to recognize the generosity of those who have dedicated their time, energy, and resources to help realize the school’s vision and mission. We, the Board of Trustees, know that nothing CHCA does would be possible without the ongoing generous spirit of our CHCA community – families, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, and friends – those who give generously to our school through the Eagle Annual Fund, capital giving, time, and other initiatives. This show of support lends the Board great momentum as we continuously honor the school’s past, and move forward into the next phase in the life of CHCA – one that has CHCA students, faculty, staff, and parents engaging more intellectually, spiritually, and relationally than ever before. Partnering closely with the school administration, the Board of Trustees focuses its efforts on the school’s long-term vision and financial viability and stability. We see excellence and ongoing potential in our curriculum, our facilities, and in our structure – all signs that bode well for the health of the school. Together with the historical perspective of our trustees and the variety of expertise and experience on our Board, we provide a solid foundation upon which to build an exciting future. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I again wish to simply say, “thank you”. It is your support for our mission, your heart for God’s plans at CHCA, and your commitment to our students that makes all of this possible. For this we are truly blessed and grateful. Sincerely, Brian Van Jura President, Board of Trustees

A Message from the Board of Trustees Development Chair Hansell Family (L to R): Christy, Ella ‘24, Matthew ‘22, Kevin
Providing an environment of intellect and faith, curiosity and innovation, service and success supporting the growth of the Kingdom is the hope for every day in this community. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy provides so much to so many. We surveyed our community and learned that CHCA is not just a school or a place to work but it is MORE. It is Light, Community, a Foundation, Blessing, and the list goes on. Here is what was shared, and some highlights of the impact to CHCA.
All of this is only possible because of incredible dedication and generosity! During this year, 2375 charitable gifts were made for total charitable dollars of $2,700,000 blessing 34 areas in our school. Of this total, $500,000 was raised for the Annual Fund which fuels our mission of fully equipping students to make a difference for Christ in this world. Every gift enhances the breadth, depth, and scope of the CHCA educational learning experience and each student’s individual academic journey. We are most grateful for the way this community makes sacrifices to help develop the intellect and faithfulness of every student. Please enjoy the details of this annual report representing all facets of generosity shared with our school and join us in a prayer of gratitude for this mission and all who make it possible. Thank you for being a part of this generous community! Sincerely, Kevin Hansell Development Chair, Board of Trustees 8
Celebration 2018
Celebration 2018 “Lights, Camera, Auction” dinner and auction was a night of FUNdraising for 400 guests and volunteers at the Savannah Center on February 10, 2018. The evening included 650 silent auction packages featuring something for everyone’s budget and desire. The “Craft Beer Raffle” and “Wine Wall” were a huge success, selling out quickly. Comedian Kenn Kington was the MC and the Live auction included two puppies that melted the hearts of many and went home with two very happy families. Through the generosity of sponsors, donors, volunteers, and attendees, together we raised $180,000 to support CHCA. In addition to the gala, Celebration sponsors the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance and the Ladies’ “Peek a Boutique” Christmas Shopping Night. We strive to provide opportunities for fellowship while raising funds to support CHCA.

CHCA’s 24-Hour #WhatIf Donor Challenge: Larger Goals Achieved! Our school operates with a model that relies on charitable investments. Essentially, student tuition covers all school finances through 04/24. From 04/25 through the end of the school year, the school is funded through charitable investments to CHCA’s Eagle Annual Fund. In other words, 04/24 is the last day that tuition pays the bills. And when tuition runs out, who steps in? Generous donors who support the Eagle Annual Fund! This charitable giving gets us to the finish line each school year, supporting programming, teachers, tuition assistance, athletics, fine arts and more.
What’s the #WhatIfCHCA Challenge?
A time to rally as many donors as possible to make a gift to the Eagle Annual Fund to help finish the year strong and meet the match of a $50,000 Challenge gift.

Soaring Eagle Event 2018
It was a warm celebration of community, as we recently gathered for the 7th Annual Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving. Many thanks to Jason and Natalie McSwain, who hosted this appreciation reception at their home in Glendale, OH. For those of you who were unable to join us, we missed you and hope you enjoy these highlights from the evening. Board President Andy Espenshade opened the evening with a prayer of gratitude. He expressed thankfulness for the generosity of the families represented, as well as for those of you who could not be there. He acknowledged that without generous hearts such as yours, from the early first families of the school to today’s families, CHCA would not continue to thrive as a school of excellence. Featured first was an emotional presentation of an award: The Northwestern Mutual Foundation Exceptional Volunteer Grant. This $25,000 grant was given to CHCA Alumni Parent and founder, Ron Beshear, honoring his philanthropic leadership for over 30 years. Northwestern honored Ron with the ability to award this grant to CHCA. Ron has been involved at CHCA from the earliest meetings and served as a CHCA board member for two terms. In addition to being an alumni parent, he is a proud current CHCA grandparent. Ron shared that when he found out he was selected, tears of joy overwhelmed him. That evening as Ron was honored, he had to stop for a moment while he composed himself, and then continued, “For my 50 years in the business, this is a real high as it was culmination of those things I most love – Jesus, Mary, CHCA, and Northwestern. The fact that [Northwestern] could give to a Christian school and not discriminate was simply remarkable! So Randy, on behalf of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, we just want to say Hallelujah and Praise God!” CHCA Head of School Randy Brunk graciously accepted the grant and shared a bit about Ron and his family, “Our new home for prospec14
tive families is called the Beshear Family Welcome Center. This family represents exactly what CHCA is all about, and should be, well into the future. It gives me great hope every day when new families enter and ask about the Beshear family portrait. The Admissions team has the opportunity to share the story that this is what we value and what we honor. You are successful professionally, you poured your life into that, and at the same time, you poured into your family. The family portrait in the lobby is of three generations together, all serving with love of the Lord. I believe at the very core of this story is the future of America; it is in homes where people care deeply about their kids, staying involved in their communities, and building that into their kids. Let’s keep building this generation. You cannot lose this when it is a part of the heart and soul. Like you, Ron, getting emotional at the reality of it was not just a reward of $25,000, but it was about the realization that the company that you poured your life into valued enough what you do to award this to a Christian school, which is not very popular these days.” Ron’s wife Mary shared, “We are better people because of CHCA and the amazing impact it had on our kids. When our kids were memorizing their Bible verses, we were memorizing them too. We tried to stay a step ahead to answer their questions about the Bible. It is all because of what the Lord has done here. We just got to be the servants, but the Lord has done the amazing things. Thank you Randy for your leadership and thank you to all the staff as you really bless us.” The evening continued with a special panel of faculty members sharing their passion in their work. Randy introduced each speaker and invited them to speak about their programs and the impact they have had on their students. Each of these programs has become a CHCA distinctive that sets us apart from other schools in the area. Kevin Savage spoke about the Aquaponics program. Kevin shared, “It is inspiring for me to witness where we began, with some seeds and
empty two-liter bottles hanging upside down in a carpeted lab, to where we are now with a 4,000 gallon system in an actual greenhouse! We have grown in recognition as students’ research has been published and presented nationally and internationally. And this year, we will have four students involved with a research program in conjunction with NASA as a part of their Manned Mission to Mars program.” Karen Hordinski shared her passion for Student Organized Service. At CHCA, service is a way of life. It isn’t just something you do to meet hours; it makes you into someone who sees serving other people wherever you go. Karen shared, “I realized my passion is kids—and really believing in them, helping them find their gifts, their talents, their passions, and using those in the kingdom as they discover who God has made them to be.” CHCA’s SOS program has come to be recognized nationally for its smart design in service leadership success. Stephen Carter talked about the Coffee & Smoothie Bars & Student Entrepreneurial Enterprises. Stephen shared, “With the interest in the coffee bar growing, students have also discovered their passion about sustainability. I have had multiple students ask, ‘Can we look into cups we can compost?’, ‘Can we look into composting our coffee grounds?’, and ‘Can we look at creating a zero carbon footprint?’ This is amazing! It is really exciting to see the students take ownership, run these businesses on campus, and develop an array of lifetime skills that will lead them to success!” Andy Ciarniello, Robotics Program Coordinator, spoke about the Robotics Program. Robotics is all about working together – cooperation – to meet the proposed challenge. In the first season, we made it to the
Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving 2018
Worlds Competition and several years later, we are ranked in the top 100 teams in the world. Andy shared, “The kids take ownership and that is why I love it to watch them own their competition and the robot. We now have teams in Grades 4-6 competing with Lego robotics, a team in Grades 7-8 competing in the First Tech Challenge, and the High School team competing as one of the only FRC teams in the region. Ultimately, we hope to have a place where we can all be together with older students mentoring the younger students, as they strive to learn from one another, overcome failures, and celebrate accomplishments.” Through all of the stories shared – some very funny, others very touching – one thing shone through. There is a passion these teachers have for what they are doing and for the students at CHCA. Kevin summed it up by sharing, “The most amazing thing for me is we are just a small representation of the passion that ALL of the teachers have here.” Randy tied the evening together before his closing prayer, “No one will want to go to school unless they get to actually have some responsibility, be engaged, own it, correct it, move it, and shape it. That’s the future of education. And I feel like a kid in a candy store being surrounded by people like this. Through these few examples, I hope you see what you are investing in, as you are part of making it all possible. There are amazing kids coming out of this school doing amazing things. Thanks for investing in the lives of our kids.”

Before Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy could be the school it is today, several families had to take a leap of faith. They faithfully funded a dream and a vision of what would come to be known as Cincinnati’s Christ-centered, academically rigorous learning community. The blessing of their gift is evident as we celebrate nearly 30 years of excellence in our mission, lived out each day through the shared love of Christ, the high caliber of our faculty, the generous community, and the beauty of our facilities here at CHCA. The Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving celebrates individuals and families who carry on the legacy our founders started by faithfully investing in CHCA (whether through a gift of $2,500 or more to the Eagle Annual Fund, a record of giving any amount to the Eagle Annual Fund for at least 15 years, or a lifetime record of giving $100,000 or more to CHCA).

Eagle Annual Fund Parent Donors CHCA’s Eagle Annual Fund benefits every student, faculty, and staff member. Tuition covers 86% of the total cost to educate a student, and the Eagle Annual Fund makes up the difference. Why doesn’t tuition cover all education costs? Each year, CHCA’s Board of Trustees sets tuition at the lowest cost possible to make a CHCA an affordable option for more families. And the gap between tuition costs and the cost to educate a student is filled by tax deductible gifts to the Eagle Annual Fund and eligible government funding. So, the generosity of our community helps to close the gap on engaging curriculum, awardwinning programming, robust student activities, efficient business operations, students in need of tuition assistance, and salaries and benefits for exceptional faculty and staff. There are teachers, administrators, and other parents who are partnering with our family in raising our kids to know Christ, think critically, and be a light in the world. When our daughter transitioned to the Upper School last year, we were so thankful for the genuine concern all of her teachers showed at the fall parent teacher conferences. Many teachers asked how she was adjusting, knowing that this was her first year at the main campus. We felt so encouraged to know that her teachers not only cared about her academic success, but her emotional and spiritual well-being also.
How have you witnessed your children grow as a result of attending CHCA? The Clary Family (clockwise): Isaiah ’25, Laura, Michael, Reese ’23, Judah ’29, Owen ‘27
Getting to Know the Clary Family
The Clary family moved to Cincinnati 10 years ago because they felt called to plant a church in the city (Christ the King Church). As they thought about moving to downtown Cincinnati, they explored education options online and found Armleder almost immediately. Laura knew this was the school she wanted their children to attend. They desired that the church they would start be ethnically and economically diverse, and Armleder reflected what they desired in their church. The Clarys have been at Armleder for nine years now, and we asked them to share about their experience here at CHCA. It truly does feel like a family. It is small enough that the teachers and staff know my entire family and we know many of the children and parents in the school. It has been wonderful to have an amazing education for my children, while also having them supported and encouraged in their faith in Christ.
CHCA has had an impact on our kids by training them to be leaders, pointing them to Christ even in times of discipline, and loving our kids and wanting God’s best for them. Our boys have loved playing basketball since the 3rd grade and our daughter is in her 4th year of being a part of the Grades 5-8 musical. Our boys have also loved being a part of the Armleder EyeWitness News Team. We have seen our 2nd grader grow so much in his confidence and his oral communication ability by being a part of the news.
Why do you give to CHCA?
We contribute to the mission of CHCA because we see the benefit our family has received by being a part of this community. We have received financial assistance that has made it possible for us to be a part of the CHCA community on a pastor’s salary! We are invested in giving back because we have received so much. I (Laura) have also been honored to serve as the PTF Vice President for Armleder for the past two years and have been involved in FOFA and volunteering in many ways at Armleder. I am committed to helping other families get connected and have the same experiences that we have had, within an academically rich environment that supports the Christian values we are teaching in our home. 21 19

What does community at CHCA mean to you?
God wants us in community and what a blessing it is to have a school that truly embodies this notion. The saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” is so true and we are thankful for our village. In our family our village includes the families here (some of which are our best friends today), their teachers (who LOVE our children), and the school administration (who while leading the school also build into each child and family across the CHCA community).
How has CHCA had an impact on your students and/or family?
The Meyer Family (clockwise): Joseph ‘25, Aidan ‘27, Brad, Caroline ’29, Misty
Q&A with the Meyer Family What makes CHCA so special to you and your family?
The moment we stepped into the building at an Open House many years ago, we knew that the walls of CHCA held the spirit of love, community, and faith that we desired for our children. It goes beyond the walls though, as our children have been built into, they’ve had a deeper faith instilled in them by the outpouring of love by the staff and the friendships that our entire family have developed!
The impact of CHCA on our family, specifically our children, is a great joy to bear witness. Our children began attending CHCA in preschool and from that moment we have seen our child grow into individuals who love the Lord, love their friends, and truly love their school, and do so with a gentle spirit. Our family is better because of CHCA!
Why do you contribute to the mission of CHCA?
It is our duty, if we truly consider ourselves a part of a community, to contribute to its mission. We hope to shine the light of the Lord by demonstrating intentional generosity: giving of our time and of our gifts towards furthering the purposeful mission of the school.
Is there anything else you would like us to know about your CHCA experience?
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Col. 2:7 Our CHCA experience has provided roots for our children, roots that we pray will hold firm as they navigate their lives. For this, our hearts will always be thankful for our opportunity to be part of CHCA. 23

At every grade level, CHCA students are encouraged to sing, play, act, dance, paint, and sculpt to their heart’s content. The wide range of choices means children get countless opportunities to discover and develop their unique talents. Great facilities and outstanding teachers mean they get optimal conditions in which to discover, grow, be challenged, and do their best work. This past year was yet again no exception to the extraordinary talent displayed at CHCA, as dozens of our Fine Arts students and alumni were recognized for their gifts and talents.

Meet the Bearden Family We chose CHCA for our daughter simply because we wanted a Christ-centered environment with competitive academics. CHCA has delivered against that expectation and so much more. What makes CHCA special is that it is a strong educational program that prepares students for college and life. One example of that is the service program. The requirements and options in the program allow students to contribute and make a difference in the lives of others in ways that meet their interests, passions, and capabilities. In the process of helping others, they learn and experience life in ways they never would otherwise. The CHCA community consists of teachers, faculty and families who are most present and impactful in our daughter’s life and in the lives of other students. “It takes a village” and the CHCA community is that “village” for our daughter, and is most important outside of our immediate family in creating that environment which represents our values. The Bearden Family (L to R): Kennedy ‘21, Pervis, Robin
CHCA has provided an excellent Christ-centered education for our daughter and has allowed us to be involved through volunteerism (board member, celebration, etc.) in many ways over the years. We truly feel that the CHCA community is part of our family. We contribute to the mission of the school simply because we believe in it and believe that a Christcentered education is most beneficial to the development and well-being of our daughter now and in the future.

2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT
>>
Armleder’s Eyewitness News Team at work
Light the Way Capital Campaign Progress Report We are extremely grateful for, and experiencing the fruits of our community’s generosity, and the impact will be felt for years to come.
28
Because of your generous commitments to CHCA and the Light the Way Campaign, we are in our second year of thriving in amazing new and renovated facilities across our campuses. These new spaces have already helped our teachers and students to engage more deeply in learning experiences, and reach new heights in their climb for learning success. The Teacher Innovation Fund also launched with success, as we have several initiatives completed and/or underway, including a house built for a family in need, enhancing Armleder’s Television News programming (pictured above), and planning for a Sustainability and Food Symposium to be hosted by select CHCA faculty on April 4-5, 2019. In addition to programming and facility enhancements and elevating the experiences of our students and teachers, we have
also grabbed the attention of the community at large. To that, we are experiencing increased enrollment and higher retention. We pray that the momentum continues through elevating the learning experience as Light the Way has allowed us to do, but also by enhancing community engagement, which remains an ongoing imperative.
Campaign Financial Update:
Approximately, $5.7MM of the nearly $9MM committed has been received from 536 investors. The total amount of $9,000,000 covers the academic spaces that were added and/or updated across the Upper and Lower Schools, as well as the Blake Lindner Thompson Early Childhood Learning Center and the Teacher Innovation Fund.

SPECIAL JOURNEY FOR ALUMNA ELLIE COGGINS ‘14

A Special Journey Finding My Way Along the Camino STORY BY ELLIE COGGINS ‘14
Ellie graduated in April 2018 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from the University of Cincinnati and is now pursuing her Master of Arts in multimedia journalism from Syracuse University, where she’ll graduate in spring 2019.
The first morning of my month-long hike was both breathtaking - beautiful mountain vistas overlooking plots of vast green farmland - and completely painful for me, as I followed the yellow arrows that were marked on the ground and painted onto tree trunks. My feet ached from the hiking boots that I should’ve worked harder to break in before I left home, and my back wasn’t yet used to the extra weight of 15 pounds - everything I would need for the next five weeks - in a single backpack. My muscles were already beginning to tire and my breathing became more shallow as I started the upward climb from the small, quaint town of St. Jean Pied-de-Port, located in southern France and one of the most popular starting points for the famous pilgrimage, into the Pyrenees Mountains. The Camino, also known as the Way of St. James, has deep and significant historical roots, dating back to the middle ages. People from all over Europe would start from their doorsteps and make their way to Santiago on foot or by donkey, seeking Santiago, Spain, where the remains of the apostle James are believed to be housed at the cathedral. It used to be known for its danger, from the unpredictable weather of the Pyrenees to thieves who were waiting to prey on unsuspecting pilgrims. But for these pilgrims, this walk meant salvation, allowing them to be expunged of their sins when they reached Santiago. Nowadays, people from all over the globe go on this hike for a variety of reasons, including a desire to renew their faith and to travel, and it’s much safer than it once was. Thousands of people embark on this journey each year. From St. Jean, it’s about 500 miles on foot if one follows the yellow arrows that guide the way to Santiago.

Since I was 15-years-old and sitting in my Christian studies class, I knew that this hike was something that I wanted to do one day. Mr. Bacon, my teacher at the time, showed us a movie in class called The Way, in which Martin Sheen’s character goes on this famous walk to honor the death of his adventurous son who died while crossing the Pyrenees. Sheen’s character was someone who never ventured outside of his comfort zone, and that resonated with me, especially as I was nearing the
end of my college career. I had grown comfortable, even lazy to some degree, in my studies, relationships, and faith - and that scared me. I decided to make that dream a reality, so over Christmas break of my senior year, I made the decision that I was going to hike the Camino after graduation. On April 30th of this year, three days after receiving my diploma, I was on a plane to Paris by myself, the scariest thing I’ve done in my life. On that first day, I honestly regretted doing it. I felt alone and unsure of myself and realized how physically unprepared I was. Not only was the first stretch through the Pyrenees one of the longer days, but it was also mostly steep uphill with a short but sharp downhill at the end, the perfect recipe for painful joints. To make matters worse, I didn’t realize there would be only one stop during the 17-mile first day of unpredictable weather. It started out sunny, but throughout eight hours, went through cycles of rain, fog, hail, snow, and wind - the only place I’ve ever experienced more weather changes in a short period of time than Ohio. I didn’t pack food and was so weak and cold that two women found me crying next to the trail and stopped to help me make it to the end, giving me energy bars and gloves. “You don’t leave a pilgrim behind,” one said to me. “It’s not in the Camino spirit.” That night as I lay in bed, surrounded by 150 other people who had also completed their first day on the Camino, I held back tears as I thought about quitting and flying home. I refused to message home that night, scared that if I did, I would get homesick and want to quit even more. I decided to give it another day. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t want others to think I had failed; I couldn’t bear the thought of carrying the knowledge that I had given up so quickly. I deserved more than quitting, so I decided to stay, for at least one more day. The next morning, I woke up to singing and gentle guitar strumming from the Dutch volunteers that ran the albergue. “Good morning,” their voices rang. “God bless you along the Way.” I had survived the hardest day, and their melody filled my soul with some needed warmth to get me
out of bed. It also dawned on me that I was now in Spain; if I could walk from France to Spain, then I could handle at least one more day. Shortly into the morning, I ended up running into a few familiar faces from the previous day. There were Jen and Francesca from England, and Whitlam from Australia. On a pilgrimage that is mostly middle-aged people, few of whom spoke English, meeting them provided incredible comfort, as probably some of the only young English-speakers who started the day as me. We even ran into Sam again, also from Australia, who joined us for the rest of the day’s hike. That evening, we stayed at the same albergue and ended the night laughing at the insanity of the first day in the mountains. From that point on, we spent literally every waking - and sleeping - moment together, getting up at 6 a.m. to start walking, reaching our destination around 3 p.m. after about 15 miles, then spending the rest of the evening eating dinner, wandering around the town we were in, napping, and hanging out in our albergues, usually sharing stories from back home over a bottle of Spanish red wine. On the Camino, it’s normal to walk with a group, but those groups are often fluid, adding individuals or losing some as pilgrims decide to take time
“You don’t leave a pilgrim behind. It’s not in the Camino spirit.” to walk solo or meet others. We were a strange situation, having met so early yet settling into a solid group. We couldn’t have been more different, from our personalities to our backgrounds, but somehow we worked. One woman we met near the end of the hike shared with us that this was her fourth Camino. When we told her that we had been together for almost four weeks, her smile radiated. “These people will become your Camino family,” she assured us. “They’ll be in your lives forever. I promise.”
She was correct. The four of us became so close that they became more like family than friends. Our time together was filled with so much joy that happy memories far outweigh the ones of painful blisters and sunburn. We raced down hills, usually Sam at the lead. We rated our daily orange juice and tortilla, a Spanish omelette. We’d each order different desserts so we could try one another’s. We had blister popping “parties” every night, a gross but necessary activity, that became somewhat fun as we laughed at how gross our feet were. We sang with nuns at one of our albergues. When Francesca’s boyfriend Dan and friend Josh from home joined us came the birth of the “Camino Games,” silly guessing games that helped pass the time while walking. On our very last day, Sam blasted “I Would Walk 500 Miles” on her phone, and we laughed at the literalness and relatability of that song as we neared the end of our journey. Amidst all the fun, we were also there for each others’ lows. We suffered blisters, boredom, tears, and sickness together. One night I got food poisoning, and Francesca and Whitlam sat on the floor of the bathroom until I was better. We said an emotional goodbye to Francesca, Dan, and Josh as they had to leave early. We all shared stories of struggles, from broken relationships to feelings of failure, with one another. At the beginning of the trip, before any of us knew the power of the Camino, we could never have imagined sharing so much of our lives with people who were practically strangers. But in an experience like the Camino, it felt only natural to do so. We couldn’t have been four more different people, but on a journey like this one, all walls are torn down and differences bring you closer together, not farther apart. The Camino is the trip for the “in-betweener” in life: the person between jobs or school, the person who experienced heartbreak, the person who just retired, the person wanting to see the world, the person looking for God. Most importantly, we all had the need to discover - or rediscover - our identities and purpose, the common thread that ties all pilgrims together. In my daily life back home, I was so consumed by work, school, social life, family, and a whole host of other distractions that I had forgotten what it meant just to sit back and reflect. The Camino
was the perfect opportunity to look back and examine my life to see what I had been missing because I was too busy to stop, be quiet, and think. There was no internet, Netflix, or social media to distract me, only the stillness of nature and the welcomed monotony of putting one foot in front of the other. When I finally arrived in Santiago with my friends 34 days after beginning our journey, it was a bittersweet moment. It felt like the end of a dream. Rather than being thrilled that I could finally wash my clothes properly, sleep in, and take off my now well-worn hiking boots for good, I was sad that everything was over. In retrospect, I realize that the end of the physical journey was actually just the beginning of my internal one. The dream that was planted in my mind in that class seven years ago isn’t nearly over. I came out of my trip with a renewed faith, a yearning to be a lifelong traveler and student of the world, and a confidence I had never known before. I am thankful that I didn’t listen to that little voice in my head that told me I was too weak to walk 500 miles or that I wasn’t brave enough to go alone. As incredible as it was to walk the historic streets of Pamplona, explore Gaudi-designed architecture, traverse through stunning vineyards, or look up in awe at the cathedral in Santiago, the most amazing part of my Camino was opening up my heart to others and recognizing the courage within me, even if it’s only a single ounce of courage that will push me to take a step towards something - or someone - new. At a church I stopped in along the way (I couldn’t tell you where exactly, only that it was nestled on a hill and is the only church on the Camino that invites its visitors to ring its bells), a nun shared with me the blessing of the Way. Essentially, it describes the “Camino spirit,” which guided us along our hike: Live with less, be willing to help your neighbor, search for truth, be grateful, seek fellowship with others, and recognize that the journey is more important than the destination. Most importantly, slow down. Pause. Contemplate. Be quiet. Listen. And be amazed by all that surrounds you.
