INTRODUCTION CHCA Dance Academy is not just an after-school program; it is a dance academy exclusively for our CHCA students. We offer a variety of levels and styles that include technique and competitive options. Our professional faculty features instructors who have danced and choreographed professionally throughout the United States and carry with them national and regional awards for choreography and performance. Our program also offers an ALL INCLUSIVE tuition system, meaning you are charged a flat fee for classes, costuming, competitions, etc. This makes the financial commitment easy to budget. Traditional studios generally charge tuition and then charge for all of the ‘extras’ throughout the year. The only expenses not covered in CHCA’s program will be personal items (e.g., shoes, tights, hairpins, makeup), competition entry fees and costumes for solo and ensemble performers and travel expenses. If you are new to our studio and need help with registration, please contact the Dance Program Director Judy McCreary at judy.mccreary@chca-oh.org. Please remember that you cannot sign up for competitive teams without an evaluation unless you were a member of a competitive team during the 2017-2018 school year. Contact Mrs. McCreary if you have questions regarding evaluations or 2018-2019 placement.

TECHNIQUE CLASSES
Technique classes are non-competitive classes which focus on flexibility, body alignment and learning the correct execution of dance steps. Core strength will be emphasized along with learning new combinations, leaps and turns. Students will progress at individual rates, so these classes are ideal for the beginning student as well as those desiring a more serious focus. The technique classes will have the opportunity to perform in our spring Showcase. There is a $30 program fee added to cover the costume, with the exception of the Jazz and Acro classes, which do not perform in the Showcase.
BALLET/JAZZ TECHNIQUE (GRADES K-1 COMBO CLASS) This is the beginning combination class for the young dancer. During this stage of dance development, introductory technique is the primary focus in ballet, which is learned through a series of repetitive movements which build upon each other. Students will learn the 5 positions of feet and arms, and participate in basic barre exercises such as plies, tendus, and rond de jambe. They will also be introduced to basic jazz steps, which lays the groundwork for technique in up-beat dancing. They will learn short combinations and begin leaps and turns.
(FOR GRADES 6-12) This class is
dedicated to worshiping God and ministering to others
through the gift and art of movement. Class will focus on
celebrating what God has done for us through His son Jesus Christ. Spiritual discussions and short devotionals will lead
into a deeper connection with God through both choreographed dance pieces and times of free expression. There is no prior dance experience required for this class.
STRETCH & STRENGTH
(CONDITIONING FOR DANCERS)
As dance performance is rigorous, it is imperative that
dancers continuously build strength and flexibility to support
their performance demands. It is optimal to offer conditioning separate from technique to allow dancers/athletes to strengthen their bodies and enable greater technique and injury prevention. This class will include cardiovascular, flexibility, and strength exercises, as well as arm, back, and legwork. Non-dancer athletes are also welcome to take this class.
JAZZ TECHNIQUE I
This is the class for students
wanting to learn the fundamentals of classical jazz technique.
Geared primarily toward Grades 2-3, this jazz technique class will continue to work on strength, flexibility, and acquiring
lots of new skills! Battements, pirouette turns, pas de bouree,
tuck jumps, and X-jumps are just some of the skills that will be introduced. This class is required for competitive teams.

pirouette and chaine turns, and above average flexibility (close
leveled steps, they will continue to learn steps like the buffalo, back
pirouettes and working toward doubles, basic footwork for leaps, to 1 or more splits). Throughout the year students will be
working on turns in second, ring leaps, attitude and side leaps, and displays of flexibility and strength through leg extensions.
This is a required class for participation on our competitive teams.
JAZZ TECHNIQUE III
This is a continuation of Jazz II for
grades 7-12, with more advanced expectations. Skill requirements for Jazz III are: double pirouette, 3 turns in 2nd, grande Jetes (at
least one in a 180 full split), and 2 flat splits, strong chaine turns with proper alignment. Also, must have the basic footwork for:
attitude leaps/calypsos, tilt jumps, ring leaps, coupe or pencil
turns, side leaps, and leg hold turns. This class is for the dance student who has had consistent dance training and wants to continue to be challenged. This is a required class for the competitive Musical Theatre Team and Jazz ensembles.
ACRO I
Our Acrobatic Arts-certified classes teach dancers basic
to intermediate tumbling skills to incorporate into their dance routines. Acro improves flexibility, balance, and strength.
Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency for each acrobatic exercise before attempting one of a higher level.
Acrobatic Arts is a professional curriculum which teaches safety and correct execution of acro dance.
ACRO II
This class is for students with some gymnastics or
acro dance background. Prerequisites for this class are:
handstand with proper alignment, back walkover, right and left
basic shuffle and flap. As the students progress through a series of essence, maxiford and turning maxiford, and much, much more.
TAP II
This class builds on Tap I or is a good starting spot for
students with some tap background. Drawbacks, pirouettes,
wings, toe stands, and single-triple timestep will be some of
the skills learned, and class will progress as students are ready.
HIPHOP I
This high-energy, beginner level class will teach
Grades K-2 students the basics of hiphop and breakdancing.
They will have fun dancing to age-appropriate music that, along with the moves, will always hold to the high standards of CHCA.
HIPHOP II
This is a continuation of Hiphop I, and will
be geared toward Grades 3-4 students. Still taught at the beginner level, this fun class will continue the technique
learned in the previous level, but is fine for first-time hiphop dancers as well.
COMPETITION TEAMS Lots of team camaraderie and fun is had on our competitive teams! Requirements for competitive team participation are: one ballet
class, one jazz technique class, and the competition team rehearsal. Teams are offered in the genres of Musical Theatre and Jazz,
depending on the age group. Teams compete in 1-3 competitions per year, perform at 2-3 CHCA basketball games, ArtBeat, and the spring Showcase. Extra “outreach performances will also be offered!

PROGRAM DETAILS TIMING All classes run from September through May and coordinate with the CHCA calendar. Classes will not be held on school holidays, unless otherwise noted by the instructor. Competitive team dancers will have two additional choreography classes for each routine in August before the dance classes begin in order to learn their routine for the year. Competition dates, basketball games, and other performances will be announced in early fall.
FINANCIAL INFORMATION A non-refundable $25 per student enrollment fee (and $75 jacket if selected) will be collected upon registration in UltraCamp. On August 17, or upon registration if after August 17, 20% of program and instructional fees will be automatically withdrawn from the student’s UltraCamp account and the balance of the fees will be deducted on the first of each month for six months (October 1 through March 1). **Since class size is limited, the CHCA Dance Academy program will be a year-long enrollment and financial commitment. The open registration closes on August 13 for competitive teams. After that, please contact the Dance Director, Judy McCreary. Open enrollment for all other classes continues. If your student withdraws from the competition
program during the year, you are still responsible for the full
amount of your financial commitment. For students enrolled in technique classes ONLY, you will enroll for the year and the fee will be based on the full year. However, withdrawals effective for the second semester will be accepted if submitted to the Program Director AND Fine Arts Director using the Dance Academy withdrawal form by November 1.
