08-09“God has been good” Three teachers remember CHCA’s first year

Twenty years ago, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy opened its doors for the very first time. The campus looked considerably different in 1989, its 165 students, faculty, staff and administration sharing space in a solitary building which today serves as the middle school. Back then, there was no Edyth B. Lindner Elementary. There was certainly no high school, and no need for one since the school only went as far as the seventh grade. No tennis courts, no football field or track, no tennis center, no baseball fields, no practice soccer fields; just one lone building that sat smack dab in the middle of a 23-acre plot of land in Symmes Township. It is hard to imagine what it must have been like that first year for those seven families who risked everything to start this school. Back then, there was no manual, no step-by-step guide, no Starting a Christian School for Dummies book available to show them the way. Instead, this smart, fearless group of men and women did what they do best. They gave, both of their time and their treasure. They prayed, for their new school and for their children. And they and their friends threw caution to the wind and stepped

out in faith, putting their trust fully in the hands of the Almighty who had led them to this place. What gave them some comfort was in knowing they had hired the best Christian faculty and staff to walk alongside them in this new venture. Many staff members hired in the school’s second year are still teaching at the school, but of the original cast of characters from 1989, only three remain: Ed Steitz, who teaches fifth grade math at the middle school; Sue Collins, a first grade teacher at EBL Elementary;

led to CHCA are the reason families come back year after year. Ed, Sue and Sally have played a significant part in the miracle that is CHCA because like those first families, they sacrificed much to be here. While their memories of 1989 have faded, they have not disappeared with the passing of time. Here, the last three original staff members reminisce about that first year at CHCA.

2

Ed Steitz

Back in 1989, I didn’t have any gray hair, had more energy and was just freshly infected with an excitement about what God was doing in this place. There were untold numbers of people in the background quietly sacrificing time, talent and money to contribute to the establishment of a new kind of Christian school. Every school board member and Richard Johnson, the founding Head of School, passionately and tirelessly worked to see the start-up successfully come about. The summer before school started, my family traveled several times from St. Louis to Cincinnati to look for homes. Some of the founding families were there to help us. The Trenz family graciously housed us each time we came into town. Later, Ron and Mary Beshear took us under their wing and offered much help and encouragement, especially that first year as we began our new adventure in a new town and a new school. We finally sold our home in St. Louis and arrived in Cincinnati for good on August 25, 1989. It was toward the end of the week and teacher in-service meetings were to start the following Monday. My wife Gale’s father passed away that morning. So here we were, in a new town, closing on a new house, starting a new job, and now add to that a huge loss for our family. After closing on our new house, several of CHCA’s board members arranged airline tickets and put us on a plane Saturday morning for the funeral service. While we were away, Richard Johnson and his wife Marie met the moving van at our new house and supervised/ unloaded our moving van. They set up beds so that when we arrived home late on Tuesday we could go right to sleep. You may wonder how a teacher from St. Louis came to be at CHCA. The founders purposely hired some teachers locally and some from other parts of the country. I was told this was intentional since they felt God wanted to do some things differently when it came to Christian education than what was already

available in the Cincinnati area. Besides me they hired teachers from Tennessee, Vermont, and northern Ohio. Dr. Mark Beadle, our first principal, had even previously taught in Saudi Arabia and Taiwan. Every day of school that first year was a new challenge. We had to figure out how we were going to handle the day-to-day operations of our school and stay true to the vision of the founders to do something different in Christian education. Among a number of distinctives, there was a desire to have high parent involvement. Another was to enable our students not only to acquire Bible knowledge but somehow do the trickier task of also cultivating a heart/knowledge/ experience that would stay with them long after they left our campus. It was the founders’ desire that CHCA join hands with homes and churches to assist students in becoming knowledgeable followers of Jesus, who would love Him and have a positive impact in whatever field they choose in life. The excitement from these families was palpable as they decided to join together in this huge adventure that God was orchestrating! The tradition of having class parties before the start of school began that year as a way to help families get to know each other. One of the families I met at my third grade party was the Cotton family. Mrs. Cotton told me she was praying that there would be enough seventh graders to form a class so their oldest could join their third grader at the school. She mentioned that if that happened they were going to immediately begin looking for houses in the area so as not to have to fight traffic from the Eastgate area every day. God heard her prayers and a seventh grade class was formed. The student desks didn’t arrive until late on the first day of school. Parents immediately mobilized and spent hours assembling those desks, including Mr. and Mrs. Cotton, who worked late into the evening. Mrs. Cotton was one of the moms scrubbing down and praying over each desk. Because of the work of parents like Mrs. Cotton, on Day 2 we had our desks. Then the unthinkable happened. It was the end of the second day of school and the Eastgate carpool had not arrived to pick up the kids. Word reached the school that Mrs. Cotton had been involved in a horrific car accident north of school at the corner of Snider and Irwin-Simpson. In the car were Mr. and Mrs. Cotton and their preschool daughter. They had all been rushed to the hospital. Mrs. Cotton did not survive. Mr. Cotton and their daughter did, but it took months of rehabilitation before they fully recovered. We look back now and can see how God used these tragedies and joys to bind our founding families together. We ended that first year by gathering all the students around the flag pole at the end of the day. Pretty soon we saw a speck which became larger as it came closer: a skydiver. He landed on the front field and marched over to Richard Johnson with a piece of paper. It was a proclamation announcing the end of the first year of school at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy! Nine months later, we received our accreditation from the State of Ohio, a process that usually takes quite a bit longer. The rest is history

Sue Collins Everything was an exciting “first” that year in 1989. What I probably remember best was the parent involvement. I recall Angela Stutz singing “May those who come behind us find us faithful.” I remember our “playground” was the circle in front of the middle school building for a long time. I had [CHCA class of 2001 grad] Matthew Warren in my class and he had a pet boa that he brought to school several times (and occasionally wore around his neck). His mother, Camilla, taught some science for the older kids when we needed her. She came to our class and shared some activities, like the time she dissected a fish with the first graders. We had lots of great parent interaction back then!

Sally Hall During the summer before school started, I was part of the search committee to find a librarian. We had not had any luck and as the first day of school drew closer Richard Johnson asked me for the third time if I would take the job. Although I wasn’t working at the time, I knew whatever salary they could offer me wouldn’t be enough to sustain us. Clarke (CHCA Class of 2002 grad) was enrolled in the preschool three mornings a week, Cart (’04) was two at the time, and I was pregnant with Hannah (’06). Two days before school started, Richard Johnson called again and this time offered me a deal I couldn’t refuse: the library was on phase two of the building project, so he asked me if I would work five hours a week to order and process the books so that the library would be ready to go in January 1990. He said that I could bring Cart with me and he could color/play while I worked! By January of that first year they hadn’t found a librarian so they hired a teacher to cover the library and I just kept on ordering the books. We kept this arrangement for the first four years. To make a twenty-year story short, I was supposed to be in that job for a month, and two decades later I am still here. I don’t know if I should admit this, but I’ve never filled out an application or had an interview! God has been good.

Breaking Down the Financial Barrier Since one of our core values is socioeconomic diversity, Cincinnati Hills has made it a priority to explore ways to help families afford a CHCA education. A few years ago, the Board of Trustees formed a subcommittee intent on exploring this issue. Here, Board member Brian Gardner and Head of School Randy Brunk discuss why affordability is something we should all care about, and how CHCA will achieve it. 24 6

Why is this important to the Board? Brian Gardner: Embracing economic diversity will help us prepare a more diverse and well-rounded population of tomorrow’s leaders to go into the world and fulfill the Great Commission. We also believe firmly that God rewards generosity, and we are confident that we will continue to be blessed (as we have already) as we seek to share with others the blessings that God has bestowed on us through the generous investment of CHCA’s founders.

Randy Brunk: Socioeconomic diversity is necessary in schooling to ensure every voice is heard. [Kids need] the mindset and deep understandings of a variety of classes and backgrounds. That certainly will be more reflective of the world they will enter. A strong affordability endowment ensures we have a cross-section of families at every level of our school.

What is the process of determining what affordability looks like? Who will it impact? RB: We began by identifying and attempting to define socioeconomic diversity as well as finding comparable programs that might have unique approaches to the issue. The second step was to determine approximately what income groups would need how much to consider the school a viable option for their family. This was followed by a more complete analysis of what school expenses should be covered by tuition and what expenses would be best raised from donors to assure we are adequately covering the cost to educate. Then we determined the amount of ongoing annual and endowed funds it would take to fund future socioeconomic diversity goals. BG: With a very large portion of the school’s costs fixed or semi-variable, filling every seat will ensure the lowest possible cost per student. When there are empty seats, incremental students add to the school’s operating income, even if they received discounted tuition, without materially increasing its operating costs. Thus, providing tuition assistance to some will actually keep tuition costs down even for families that do not receive it.

What are the next steps? RB: The plan is to get a campaign going in the coming years to more robustly support the Tuition Affordability Endowment. Fortifying this endowment will ensure that families of varying backgrounds do not see tuition as a stumbling block in attending CHCA. BG: As a community, we recognize that we are among those “to whom much has been given” and we want to pass the blessing on to others by making a high-quality Christ-centered college preparatory education available to as many qualified students as possible, without regard to their financial position. We are planning a variety of initiatives designed to feed into the endowment, which will allow us to fund diversity across the socioeconomic spectrum even as the endowment is growing.

CHCA FROM MY PERSPECTIVE by Cassie Sagness, junior

I am what they call a “lifer,” high school slang used to

describe those who have been at CHCA their entire educational careers. And I can honestly say that I am proud to hold this title, not as bragging rights but simply because I am so genuinely happy I have been a part of this place. Over the past twelve years, CHCA has had a vital impact on who I have become as a person and who I hope to be in the future.

But the number of years a person attends school here has

nothing to do with the volume of things that are experienced. My closest friends range from people who have been at CHCA for over a decade to those who are attending their first semester here, and no matter who you ask, people say that there is “just this feeling” they get by being here.

And the more I contemplate this, the more I struggle to

identify only one attribute that triggers that feeling. I know that it definitely pertains to something spiritual, as the more time I spend here, the more I cannot help but to fall in love with God.

When I think about the very first impressionable moment

the school had on me, I remember being in third grade during the fall of 2001. With two parents in the airline industry, in the weeks following September 11th I was terrified every time they left the house. But my teacher cared enough to notice, and every day stayed with me at recess, assuring me that things would be ok. The teachers and faculty here don’t just care enough to get the job done, they care enough to leave a lasting impression.

I had already learned so much about Christianity by age

eight that I remember thinking to myself, if people can be this nice being a Christian, I want not only to study God but to know God. To this day I live by this as I take as many Christian Studies classes as I can simply because this school has instilled in me an honest passion to learn more about God. And I have CHCA’s faculty to thank for this.

When Jesus said, “Go – be the church,” he was teaching his disciples the idea that churches and

Back To Class 2002 grad reflects on her past, present and future at CHCA

Before CHCA was open, before the Blue Ribbon awards and dozens

of MVC titles, before there was even a high school, Dorian Dostal was there. Dori and her brother, Ted, were two of CHCA’s first students in 1989, and like many families, she took part in getting the school ready for its big debut on September 6th.

“I remember going to the school with my family before it was actu-

ally opened, to clean, dust, and wash windows,” she says.

CHCA from my Perspective

As a student in Jan Everett’s kindergarten class that first year, she recalls some very traditional activities

(making books, class tea parties, CHCA’s first ever Fall Festival) and a few non-traditional ones too (groundbreakings, a skydiver landing on the soccer field on the last day). But above all, she remembers the people and relationships. “The teachers really built into me and my family,” she says. “I remember each one, and the impact they had on me, very vividly.”

Connor Espenshade, kindergarten

A lot has changed in the 20 years since she was having tea parties in Mrs. Everett’s class. After graduating

from CHCA in 2002, Dori attended Georgetown College in Kentucky, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. Along

things have not changed over the years: the friendships that were forged here remain some of the most important in her life.

Michelle Tobeson, 12th Grade

“A couple of my closest friends, to this day, I met in high school,”

‘‘

she says.“Not to mention my wonderful husband whom I’ve known since middle school! It’s a blessing to have married someone I share so many memories with.”

Something else that hasn’t changed: like the teachers who

made an impression on her years ago, Dori sees her work in the classroom as a ministry. “CHCA instilled in me the desire to serve others and make a difference. I had great teachers that motivated and inspired me to go into education and build into children. I saw teaching as one way I could use my gifts to do just that,” she says. “Being at Armleder allows the Lord to work through me with the children I interact with each day.”

Dori and Wes on their wedding day

Now in her third year of teaching, Dori recognizes how her time at Cincinnati Hills shaped her, and how

she now has a chance to shape the lives of others. “It has been cool to see how the decision my parents made years ago to send my brother and me to CHCA has really shaped my life in so many ways,” she explains. “CHCA helped build a solid foundation in my life spiritually, academically and socially. The Lord gave me the desire to be a part of doing the same in other children’s lives and coming back to teach here was one incredible way I could do that.”

CHCA has been a great environment for challenging myself academically, but what might be even more significant is the close friends I have made and closeknit community here. This summer was tough. Due to a variety of difficult things my family faced, I was having a really hard time. But my friends and the girls on my soccer team rallied around us like you wouldn’t believe. They were an amazing support system and were really there for me. It showed me that we weren’t just schoolmates – we’re like family. I’m looking at colleges right now, and will make sure the school I pick has great community and plenty of outreach opportunities. That’s what CHCA is good at: building a foundation in students that makes you want to develop relationships, serve others and 7 take leadership roles. 9

Several years ago, the school obtained bond financing in order to retire previous higher interest debt and to fund several new initiatives. The Board determined that the amount of bond financing required was very reasonable considering the assets of the school and debt carrying capacity of the budget. We have accessed the full amount of approved bond financing and now will turn our attention to the rapid reduction of balance. As you can see, the debt should be retired at a steady pace until it is completely paid off in 2028.

CHCA from my Perspective: Twin siblings Jess & Nick Elder, 8th grade

‘‘

Jess Elder

One thing I really like is the small student body at the school. It gives all of us a chance to know each other and grow our friendships. I love the positive Christian environment at CHCA and how God is incorporated into the classes and lessons. The teachers here are always willing to help you whenever you need it and they really want to make a connection with you not only as a student but as a person. The coaches too are so giving of their time and want to help us succeed. What I

’’

like most about my friends is that they are willing to share their Christian faith, they are loads of fun and they are always there for me.

A look at our Expenses We feel that our people are our greatest asset. Where else can you find such an incredible, well-qualified and committed staff? Accordingly, we are happy to report that our five-year compensation equalization program is complete. The reason for this endeavor was threefold: first, to ensure our faculty is fairly compensated relative to their peers at CHCA; second, to be at 85% of the average salaries for the public school districts in which we compete for teachers; and third, to be at 100% of the average salaries that other independent schools are paying. In order to retain and attract quality staff, we must be willing to pay a salary that befits their skills and talents.

A look at our Revenues Tuition and fees make up the lion’s share of our income stream. State Auxiliary Funds also provide a great deal of revenue. Beyond those sources, we are heavily reliant on the generosity of donors to keep our revenue stream strong. Non-tuition revenue is essential to keep tuition from rising too fast.

A look at Our Enrollment Thanks to the addition of a preschool, significant investment in resources, and additional efforts by the Admissions Office, CHCA saw a boost in enrollment in 2008-09.

Nick Elder CHCA has always been such a welcoming place and I really like that. It’s a Godcentered place that is very comfortable for me. I have made friendships here that I know will last a lifetime and I have been able to learn so much about my friends as individual people. My teachers, coaches and my friends are very

’’

accepting and relate to me and my daily challenges. It’s good to know that I can go to any of them and ask for help...and get it.
