CHCA Fine arts dance academy brochure 2017-2018

Page 1

CHCA Dance Academy is not just an after-school program; it is a dance academy exclusively for our CHCA students. We offer a variety of levels and styles that include technique and competitive options. Our professional faculty features instructors who have danced and choreographed professionally throughout the United States and carry with them national and regional awards for choreography and performance. Our program also offers an ALL INCLUSIVE tuition system, meaning you are charged a flat fee for classes, costuming, competitions, etc. This makes the financial commitment easy to budget. Traditional studios generally charge tuition and then charge for all of the ‘extras’ throughout the year. The only expenses not covered in CHCA’s program will be personal items (e.g., shoes, tights, hairpins, makeup), competition entry fees and costumes for solo and ensemble performers and travel expenses. If you are new to our studio and need help with registration, please contact the Dance Program Director Judy McCreary at judy.mccreary@chca-oh.org. Please remember that you cannot sign up for competitive teams without an evaluation unless you were a member of a competitive team during the 2016-2017 school year. Contact Judy if you have questions regarding evaluations or 2017-2018 placement.

perform in our spring Showcase. There is a $30 program fee added to cover the costume, with the exception of the Acro classes which do not perform in the Showcase.

BALLET/JAZZ TECHNIQUE (K-1ST GRADE COMBO CLASS) This is the beginning combination class for the young dancer. During this stage of dance development, introductory technique is the primary focus in ballet, which is learned through a series of repetitive movements which build upon each other. Students will learn the 5 positions of feet and arms, and participate in basic barre exercises such as plies, tendus, and rond de jambe. They will also be introduced to basic jazz steps, which lays the groundwork for technique in up-beat dancing. They will learn short combinations and begin leaps and turns.

Skill requirements for Jazz 2 are: double pirouette, 3 turns in 2nd, grande Jetes (at least one in a 180 full split), and 2 flat splits, strong chaine turns with proper alignment. Also, must have the basic footwork for: attitude leaps/calypsos, tilt jumps, ring leaps, coupe or pencil turns, side leaps, and leg hold turns. This class is for the dance student who has had consistent dance training and wants to continue to be challenged. This is a required class for the competitive Lyrical team and Jazz ensembles.

TAP I (CO-ED) Knowing how to tap is a fun and valuable skill when it comes to performance! Beginning tap will teach the basic shuffle and flap. As the students progress through a series of leveled steps, they will continue to learn steps like the buffalo, back essence,

maxiford and turning maxiford, and much, much more.

TAP II (CO-ED) This class builds on Tap I or is a good starting spot for students with some tap background. Drawbacks, pirouettes, wings, toe stands, and single-triple timestep will some of the skills learned, and class will progress as students are ready.

ACRO I Our AcrobticArts-certified classes teach dancers basic to intermediate tumbling skills to incorporate into their dance routines. Acro improves flexibility, balance and strength. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency for each acrobatic exercise before attempting one of a higher level. AcrobaticArts is a professional curriculum which teaches safety and correct execution of acro dance.

ACRO II This class is for students with some gymnastics or acro dance background. Prerequisites for this class are: handstand with proper alignment, back walkover, right and left side cartwheels, and chin stands.

COMPETITION TEAMS Lots of team camaraderie and fun is had on our competitive teams! Requirements for competitive team participation are: one ballet class, one jazz technique class, and the competition team rehearsal. Teams are offered in the genres of lyrical and jazz, depending on the age group. Teams compete in 1-3 competitions per year, perform at 2-3 CHCA basketball games, ArtBeat, and the spring Showcase. Extra “outreach performances will also be offered!

PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are offered to students interested in receiving more focused and individualized training. They are very useful for improving technique or specific dance skills, or for working on a choreographed number for competition or the end of the year Showcase. Solo, duet and trio prices are consistent for all private lessons.

Students enrolled in competitive teams will receive priority registration in technique classes. Because we have scheduled the technique classes immediately before or after a performance or competitive rehearsal for each group, these students will be enrolled first. If a technique class fills, a second class will be opened and you will be notified of the change.

TIMING All classes run late August through May and coordinate with the CHCA calendar, which means classes will not be held on school holidays. Competitive team dancers will have one to two additional choreography classes for each routine in August before the dance classes begin in order to learn their routine for the year. Competition dates, basketball games and other performances will be announced in early fall.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION A non-refundable $25 per student enrollment fee (and $75 jacket if selected) will be collected upon registration in UltraCamp. On August 18, 20% of program and instructional fees will be automatically withdrawn from the student’s UltraCamp account and the balance of the fees will be deducted on the first of each month for seven months (September 1 through March 1). **Since class size is limited, the CHCA Dance Academy program will be a year-long enrollment and financial commitment. The annual registration closes on August 11 for competitive teams. Open enrollment for all other classes

continues. If your student withdraws from the competition program during the year, you are still responsible

for the full amount of your financial commitment. For

students enrolled in technique classes ONLY, you will enroll for the year and the fee will be based on the full year. However, withdrawals effective for the second semester will be accepted if submitted to the Program Director AND Fine Arts Director using the Dance Academy withdrawal form by
