CHCA Fine Arts Dance Academy Brochure 2016-2017

Page 1

INTRODUCTION CHCA Dance Academy is not just an after-school program; it is a dance academy exclusively for our CHCA students. We offer a variety of levels that include recreational, technique and competitive options. Our professional faculty features instructors who have danced and choreographed professionally throughout the United States and carry with them national and regional awards for choreography and performance.

If you are new to our studio and need help with registration, please contact the Dance Program Director Judy McCreary at judy.mccreary@chca-oh.org. Please remember that you cannot sign up for competitive teams without an evaluation unless you were a member of a competitivie team during the 2015-2016 school year. Contact Judy if you have questions regarding evaluations or 2016-2017 placement.

Our program also offers an ALL INCLUSIVE tuition system, meaning you are charged a flat fee for classes, costuming, competitions, etc. This makes the financial commitment easy to budget. Traditional studios generally charge tuition and then charge for all of the ‘extras’ throughout the year. The only expenses not covered in CHCA’s program will be personal items (e.g., shoes, tights, hairpins, makeup), competition entry fees and costumes for solo and ensemble performers and travel expenses.

REV 6/28/16

CLASS CATEGORIES PRESCHOOL CLASSES LITTLE CHICKS (3-year-olds) Nurture your child’s creative spirit in this fun introduction to dance. This class will use upbeat music and games to build an appreciation for music and the fundamental gross motor skills needed for dance. Students will sharpen social awareness, coordination, and confidence. They will also be exposed to the proper mechanics of forward and backward rolling and beginner cartwheels. The Little Chicks will perform in the spring Showcase.

EAGLETS (4 to 5-year-olds) This is a pre-ballet, tap and beginner acro combo class. Students will continue working on gross motor and listening skills, musicality and introductory ballet steps. They will be introduced to the rhythms and fun of tap. They will also continue to learn proper body position and safety in beginning tumbling skills, a stepping stone for acro dance which they may enjoy in the coming years. This class will require tap shoes. The Eaglets will perform in the spring Showcase.

COMPETITIVE TEAMS Competitive teams require one ballet class, one jazz technique class and a competitive team rehearsal for each team. Teams are offered in the genres of contemporary and jazz, depending on the age group. Teams compete three to four times per year, perform at two to three basketball games, ArtBeat and the spring Showcase. Some extra performances may be offered.

PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are for students interested in receiving more focused and individualized training. They are very useful for improving technique or specific dance skills, or for working on a choreographed number for competition or the end of the year Showcase. Solo, duet and trio prices are consistent for all private lessons.

TECHNIQUE CLASSES Technique classes are noncompetitive classes which focus on flexibility, body alignment and learning the correct execution of dance steps. Core strength will be emphasized along with learning new combinations, leaps and turns. Students will progress at individual rates, so these classes are ideal for the beginning student as well as those desiring a more serious focus.

BALLET TECHNIQUE High quality ballet training is a must for any serious dancer. This beautiful art form is the foundation for all forms of dance, as it develops necessary core strength and muscle awareness. Students will begin at the barre, then move to centre floor exercises and across the floor combinations.

JAZZ Technique Jazz technique class focuses on flexibility and a variety of turns, leaps and short jazz combinations. This is a noncompetitive recreational class that focuses on strength and improving technique and learning new dance steps and sequences.

TAP / MUSICAL THEATER COMBO NEW!

(open to both girls and boys)

This class will teach beginning to intermediate tap, jazz, and theater dance technique while creating spoken instrumentation, singing, dramatic and Broadway-styled musical theater routines. This high energy, performance based class is perfect for the more serious dancer, singer and actor aspiring to become a well-rounded triple threat or the dancer looking to have a lot of fun!

ACRO DANCE TECNIQUE Our AcrobaticArts certified classes teach dancers basic to intermediate tumbling skills to incorporate into their dance routines. Acro improves flexibility, balance and strength. This class is also great for cheerleaders to achieve back handsprings and other cheer skills. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency for each acrobatic exercise before attempting one of a higher level. AcrobaticArts is a professional curriculum which teaches safety and correct execution of acro dance.

PROGRAM DETAILS TIMING All classes run late August through the last week in April and coordinate with the CHCA calendar, which means classes will not be held on school holidays. Competitive team dancers will have one to two additional choreography classes for each routine in August before the dance classes begin in order to learn their routine for the year. Competition dates, basketball games and other performances will be announced in early fall.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION (for year-long classes) A non-refundable $25 per student enrollment fee (and $75 jacket if selected) will be collected upon registration in UltraCamp. On August 19, 20% of program and instructional fees will be automatically withdrawn from the student’s UltraCamp account and the balance of the fees will be deducted on the first of each month for seven months (September 1 through March 1). For specific fee information, please see below.

TAP / MUSICAL THEATER COMBO CLASSES ONLY If a student is only enrolling in the semester-long Tap/ Musical Theater Combo Class, 50% of the fee will be due 10 days before the class begins. The balance will be deducted on October 1 for the first semester class and February 1 for the second semester class. **Since class size is limited, the CHCA Dance Academy program will be a year-long enrollment and financial commitment. The annual registration closes on August 3 for competitive teams. Open enrollment for all other classes continues. If your student withdraws from the competition program during the year, you are still responsible for the full amount of your financial commitment. For students enrolled in technique and recreational classes ONLY, you will enroll for the year and the fee will be based on the full year. However, withdrawals effective for the second semester will be accepted if submitted to the Program Director AND Fine Arts Director using the Dance Academy withdrawal form by October 1. In this case, instruction fees will be deducted through November 1, which effectively means the cost for the first semester will be greater than half of the annual fee. Program and registration fees are nonrefundable.

Students enrolled in competitive teams will receive priority registration in technique classes. Because we have scheduled the technique classes immediately before or after a performance or competitive rehearsal for each group, these students will be enrolled first. If a technique class fills, a second class will be opened and you will be notified of the change.
