Do you have trouble with reading? Understanding words? Staying focused, without your mind drifting far, far away? Trouble seeing the words in the book and on the screen? We can help!
Media program is a team of students and professionals who are committed to creating and equal playing field for all JMU students n We encourage every student who has the accessible formats and accommodation to come to our office and meet with us! n Faculty and other JMU students can also benefit from accessible media inside and outside of the classroom
SERVICES FOR EVERYONE Currently the Accessible media office can only create audio books and captioned video for students with the “accessible formats” accommodation from the Office of Disability Services. However, many other people can benefit from having written content read out loud. The Accessible Media program offers guidance for using text-to-speech resources, including the following: n Apps
for your smartphone or tablet. VoiceOver and Microsoft Narrator (standard features on every new iOS or Windows device). Digital books and textbooks (some available for rent!) with text-to-speech features. n Adobe Reader’s Read Out Loud function to listen to accessible PDF files. n Guidance on locating captioned and/or described videos. n Apple’s
n Create
MP3 files that read the chapters of your textbook(s). n Help you listen to your Canvas assignments or assigned articles. n Enlarge the print of your textbook(s). n Access functions on your computer to read text to you. n Suggest strategies for reading your class content. n Show you how to listen to your books on the go through your iPhone, iPad, or other devices. n Help you make the icons and text larger on your computer screen. n Show you text-to-speech software n Caption videos n Rent out assistive communication devices and textto-speech software. n Access to quiet Assistive Technology labs in both Carrier and Rose Library.
