President’s Message
Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., President
My Dear Friends and Benefactors of Chestnut Hill College: In the name of the College Community, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for the multiple ways in which alumnae/i, friends, benefactors, and foundations supported the institution during this past year. Your continued generosity makes it possible for the College’s mission to be shared with students who appreciate, value, and appropriate it and, upon graduation, carry it into society in ways that continue to be transformative. I believe individuals give to causes in which they believe, to purposes which they deem right and worthy, and to institutions that have touched their hearts and given meaning to their lives. Chestnut Hill College indeed exists to do all of these things. The bounty you share supports our efforts to sharpen minds, expand hearts, and enliven spirits for the service of God and others. Ours is a noble cause, a worthy purpose, a meaningful endeavor that gives substance to dreams, hope in the future, and faith for the journey. Thank you for cultivating a generous heart and sharing from its abundance with us. For Chestnut Hill College, 2001-2002 was an historic year. After long consideration, reflection, research, study, and prayer, the Board of Directors and the Sisters of Saint Joseph made the momentous decision to change the status of the undergraduate day program from single gender to
coeducation. The announcement produced earthquake-like effects, as tremors from the proclamation were felt by alumnae/i, friends, and benefactors across the nation. Almost everyone responded positively to the announcement, especially when presented with the undeniable facts unearthed by the quarter-million dollar Teagle Study. While the commitment to the education of women is strongly rooted in the tradition of the College and the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the commitment of both to respond to the signs of the times, “to be ready and willing for any and all good work,” to seek the Ignatian “More” with abandonment and self-surrender transcends the seeming permanence of any chosen ministry and opens minds and hearts to change. Over the years, the College has continued to evolve and to embrace new frontiers as they emerge. The administrators, faculty, and staff are diligently working to create new models for learning and teaching that will perpetuate what is best from the past, adapt what is good in the present, to prepare for what will be better for our future and the futures of those whom we will educate. This year, we reaped the harvest of the past and gleaned from it seeds for the future. During the coming year, we shall till the ground, sow and water the seeds, and do all
in our power to bring them to fruition. Yesterday’s successfully taken risks convince us that today’s risk is prelude to a future full of hope. Together, let us be good stewards of Chestnut Hill College whose tradition is to dare great things in times of daunting challenge.
General College Information World Trade Center/Pentagon — In Memoriam In response to the terrible tragedy that gripped the hearts of people across our nation on September 11, 2001 the College Community gathered in prayer and remembrance. The day of the tragedy, the noon Mass was offered for peace in a Chapel packed with speechless students, faculty, staff, administrators, housekeepers, and security personnel. In the aftermath of the disquieting events, counseling services were provided for students who wished them. At mealtimes, faculty held informal forums to discuss the event and to help students put their responses in perspective. On Wednesday evening, a candlelight inter-faith prayer vigil attracted a large number of students and faculty who processed to and prayed at various stations on the grounds of the College. In a corner of the rotunda, the Campus Ministry Office created a place for prayer and remembrance. Friday, at noon, a

We often wonder if who we are and what we value is imparted to our students. The fact that the mission is alive in their hearts came home to me with great power as I met with the president of the Student Government Association a few days after the tragic events. It seems the response of the College’s student leaders was to take the words of a deeply moving “Vow of NonViolence” and make it their own by pledging to live in accordance with the sentiments and beliefs it expressed. The words were a perfect expression of the College’s mission. In the midst of so much evil, there has emerged a resilient goodness that gives hope its unquenchable power. Also in response to the tragedy of September 11th and the current war on terrorism, faculty presented a teach-in on November 27th titled “Can We Make Sense of World Events?” Six faculty members presented comments on various aspects of Islamic culture and the global situation and invited students to participate in discussions. The three-hour program was well attended and deemed very successful by students and faculty alike. On the same day, the Lecture Committee sponsored a presentation “Knowing our Neighbors: An Introduction to Islam” by Dr. Shams C. Inati, Professor of Islamic Studies at Villanova University. A capacity audience of faculty, students and staff applauded Dr. Inati’s informative and insightful comments. As the anniversary of the terrible event draws near, it is evident that its effects continue to shadow all that we do and choose as a nation. While we are saddened by the reality of such callous and calculated acts of
unarticulated need, or on still other occasions they are a response to an unspoken dream. The two gifts we celebrated last October fell into the last two categories; the gift from the Dowley estate meets an unarticulated need, while the gift from the Esseff Art Foundation is an answer to an unspoken dream.

College Dedication of Dwight V. Dowley Art Studio and Gallery and “Free Spirit,” the Gift of Mary and Peter Esseff In October of 2001, we dedicated the Dwight V. Dowley Art Studio and Gallery and celebrated the gift of the College’s first original piece of sculpture, which now graces the campus grounds. While many things have changed at Chestnut Hill College, the Art Studio on the fifth floor of Saint Joseph Hall remains in the location it was assigned in September 1903. It is this space that the gift from Dwight Dowley renovated. “Free Spirit,” by sculptor Caryl Picker, was a gift from The Mary and Peter Esseff Art Foundation. Both the Dowley and the Esseff gifts were delightful surprises to the College Community. There is something almost magical when people give gifts without being asked. Indeed, there is a certain serendipity to such unexpected largesse. Donors have their own reasons for giving. Sometimes “the gifts unasked” support plans already underway, at other times they anticipate an
During his life, no one at the College had the privilege of knowing Dwight V. Dowley. Dwight Dowley, a graduate of Saint Joseph Preparatory School, Princeton University and Harvard Law School, was a bank examiner and a lawyer who amassed his $8 million estate through wise investments. While Mr. Dowley named Woodmere Art Museum a beneficiary in his will, he made no specific mention of any other institution. He simply directed that his estate be used to help cultural organizations. The decision as to which organizations would benefit was left to his trusted attorney and a new friend of the College, Earl Barber, Esq. Taking Mr. Dowley’s interests into consideration, Mr. Barber decided to commit the majority of the estate’s funds to Chestnut Hill institutions. How Chestnut Hill College came to be among those institutions is an interesting story. Several years ago, Mr. Barber attended a lecture at the College on Landscape Architecture that was delivered by Associate Professor of Art History, Suzanne Conway. So great was the impression made by Professor Conway, that Mr. Barber recalled the lecture when he was considering how he might divide the estate. His subsequent decision to contact the Chair of the Art Department, Sister Margaret Thompson, SSJ, M.F.A., an outstanding artist in her own right, and his ongoing conversations with her confirmed his decision to give the College a very generous gift of $550,000 from the Dowley estate. This gift has made it possible to renovate the Art Studio, to provide state-of-the art
President’s Message technology for the teaching of art and art history, and to construct a small art gallery. The College is deeply grateful for the Dowley gift and for the opportunities it will offer to our present and future students. The view from the studio is spectacular; the light that enters through recently improved skylights and new windows is enhanced by the warm glow of the surrounding honey oak, restored to its original color as part of the renovation. Now centrally air-conditioned and refurbished in every way possible, the Art Studio holds a new magic for a new generation of students. Alumna Mary Sullivan Esseff ’65 and her husband Peter donated a most exciting piece of sculpture to the College. About seven years ago, I visited the Esseff home in Columbia, Maryland. Upon my arrival, I was struck by a mesmerizing piece of sculpture located in a flower-filled island in front of their beautiful home. The grace and the beauty, the sheer magnetism of the work caught my imagination. Before I knew it the thoughts I was thinking became words and the words were out of my mouth. “If you ever have to part with “Free Spirit,” I think Chestnut Hill College would be the perfect home for her.” Little did I know that six years later, “Free Spirit” would move to the College campus. Despite being a maiden 6’7” high, 5’5” wide, weighing over 900 pounds, “Free Spirit” graces the landscape with a lithe beauty and an air of freedom. Joseph Merkel, in Artspeak, said of sculptor Caryl Picker’s work: The first impression is of their dramatic sense of movement, on viewing the cast bronze figures by noted artist Caryl Picker. With this dramatic sense, Picker underscores her understanding of the quality of the dance and of the nature of the human body. All of this is made most effective by her choice of subjects, their thin, greatly elongated torsos and limbs. Only the famous
Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., poses with honorary Doctor of Laws degree recipient Lynne Korman Honickman and her husband, Harold Honickman. modern sculptor, Giacometti, formed such thin figures, but Picker uses them to express movement, while the great Italian created stillness. Chestnut Hill College is privileged and proud to boast a piece by this renowned and highly respected artist. We hope it will be the first of many such pieces to enhance the campus.
New Administrative Appointments Sister Roseann Quinn, SSJ, D.Min., is the new Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Sister Roseann is the former Chair of the Religious Studies Department and Graduate Holistic Spirituality Program. Sister Cecelia J. Cavanaugh, SSJ, Ph.D., is the Acting Dean of The College. She is the former Chair of the Foreign Language Department.
SouthEastern Pennsylvania Consortium for Higher Education (SEPCHE) On September 10, 2001, the SEPCHE Presidents gathered at Cheltenham High School to honor Congressman Joseph Hoeffel, 13th District, for his commitment to the goals of SEPCHE and his championing of the newly created SEPCHE Collaborative Institute for Math and Science. Congressman Hoeffel was able to secure $2,940,000 in support of this new initia-
tive that will provide cutting edge methodologies and instruction in new technologies to math and science teachers in the five-county Philadelphia area. In addition, each college will receive $200,000 for equipment and instruments for Math and Science Departments as well as $60,000 for technology needs.
Library and Information Services Funded by an LSTA Grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, wireless computing has arrived at Logue Library. Sixteen IBM wireless ThinkPads are now available for student use. This expands the number of student library research stations to twenty-six. These computers are useful for student research and bibliographic instruction. Technology continues to transform the way students use the Library. In the fall, returning students discovered new versions of the popular indexes PsychInfo and MLA on the library HomePage. Proquest Religion is the most recent addition to the electronic database collection. It provides both citations and full-text material from a variety of religious publications. Months of study revealed that many journals are available to Logue Library both electronically and in paper. Cancellation of more than

SEPCHE Libraries have been awarded a $50,000 Library Services and Technology Award (LSTA) from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The eight SEPCHE librarians will create a virtual library of electronic books for use by patrons on all eight campuses. As a result of this project, called the SEPCHE-book, students and faculty will access this collection from the SEPCHE web page that is linked to each library’s web page. Faculty, especially those teaching distance learning courses, will be able to assign readings from the collection without having to be concerned with creating electronic texts or with copyright restrictions. In addition, students will have access to entire monographs that the librarians will select collaboratively. Students and faculty from the eight institutions will be able to share an expensive electronic resource and the libraries will be able to use their limited library budgets more effectively. This grant will also provide each college with two e-book readers to lend to faculty and students who do not own personal computers but wish to access SEPCHEbook at home or in residence halls. Logue Library has acquired EndNote and installed it on five wireless IBM ThinkPads. This enables researchers to search bibliographic databases on the Internet and then organize and save appropriate references to a disk, thus creating a bibliography in one simple step. Students who are conducting extensive projects, dissertations for example, have found access to EndNote quite helpful in that it eliminates the need for carefully copying citations. The Library has also acquired access to Turnitin.com, an anti-plagiarism tool, and made it available to the CHC community. This source offers document source analysis from a password-protected website. Students or their instructors submit
papers using a simple customized “drop box” at the website. Turnitin.com makes a digital “fingerprint” of each paper using a set of algorithms developed especially for the Internet. Each paper is compared to billions of Internet sources and the student papers stored in its database. Within twenty-four hours, a customized report is returned; students then can make revisions to eliminate any occasions of similarity.
Administrative and Academic Computing With the laptop requirement becoming effective for all first-year students, CHC has truly become a ThinkPad University. More than 100 first-year students have leased IBM ThinkPads for the next two years. A CyberRoom has been established in Martino Hall that provides students with 24-7 access to the College network. An additional technician joined the Academic Computing staff in July; he provides support Tuesday through Sunday so that students and faculty are now served seven days a week.
Retirement and Service Awards Event On Sunday, April 21, the College held its first Service Awards Event and Retirement Celebration. Service Awards were bestowed on all those who have served the institution
for twenty or more years. The College also bid a fond farewell to Thomas Kearns, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, who has served for 37 years; Georgia McWhinney, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, who has been here for 12 years; and Patricia McGlynn, B.A., Director of Career Services, who worked on campus for 22 years. There are three components to the service awards. First, Carol Voelmle Zemnick ’75, an alumna of the College and the mother of one of our first-year students, designed a medal that has been adapted for this occasion. It is a gold CHC monogram with an inset stone that symbolizes years of service. Gentlemen received a pin that can be worn as a tie tack or a lapel pin and the ladies received a pendant. In addition, Carol Zemnick produced a fleur-de-lis pendant to be worn by faculty and staff on those occasions when academic regalia is required, e.g., Schubert Lecture, Honors Convocation, Commencement. These medals were crafted using as a model the large fleur-de-lis that is part of the president’s medal ensemble, designed by Professor of Art, Sister Therese Benedict McGuire, SSJ, Ph.D.
Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., awards honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to Blanche Haviland Moore ’50 and to her husband, Jacques J. Moore.
President’s Message A third medal has been created that will become part of a Wall of Service, honoring all those who have served the College for twenty years or more. Included on this Wall of Service will be the names and dates of service of past administrators, professors and staff beginning with Sister Maria Kostka Logue, our first Dean and the second President of the College.
Commencement Graduation was Saturday, May 4, 2002. Meteorologist Cecily Tynan, WPVI-TV, Channel 6, was the Commencement speaker and an honorary degree recipient. Honorary Degrees were also awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Jacques Moore (Blanche Haviland Moore ‘50) and philanthropist and humanitarian, Mrs. Lynne Honickman. 293 undergraduate and graduate students graduated, the largest number in our history.
College for Women USA Today/NCAA Academic Achievement Awards As we began the 2001-2002 academic year, we celebrated the fact that Chestnut Hill College was selected by USA Today and the National Collegiate Athletic Association to be honored at a special dinner in McLean, Virginia on September 28th. The College was one of nine winners of the USA Today/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Awards for 2000-2001. These awards are given to institutions with outstanding success in graduating student athletes. The College received $25,000 in scholarships that will be distributed at the president’s discretion. In these ratings, USA Today/NCAA have ranked Chestnut Hill with such top schools as Vassar, Swarthmore, Wellesley and Johns Hopkins. We are fortunate that many of our athletes are among our very best students. Chestnut Hill College continues to insist that its athletes perform satisfactorily in the classroom in order to qualify for league play.
New Ventures in Study Abroad During the summer of 2001, ten CHC students participated in an environmental
studies program in the Rain Forest (Peru). Under the leadership of Dr. William Miller, Assistant Professor of Biology, our students joined others from the University of Kansas to study the ecology of the region and to tour some of the pre-Columbian settlements in the mountains of Peru. Twelve students registered for the Environmental Science summer 2002 studytour to Australia and spent the month of June “down under.” They returned filled with exuberance and a new perspective on their discipline. As part of the initial preparations to enter into an agreement with International Solomon University, the Cabinet participated in a teleconference between administrators and students at CHC and those at International Solomon University in Kiev, Ukraine. The goal of the agreement between the two institutions is to provide courses via distance and on-site at Chestnut Hill that will result in the conferral of an Associate of Science Degree in Business Administration on Ukrainian students. Courses will be offered beginning in the fall of 2002.

Majors and Programs – A New Look One of the most important initiatives the College has undertaken as part of the New Direction is the identification of seven Signature Programs, with which the College will be immediately identified, and Essential Programs that will preserve the College as a liberal arts institution, while meeting the needs of prospective students. All current undergraduate majors have been reviewed and evaluated in light of specific criteria designed to assess which majors have been the most successful historically. Evaluations were based on current needs, the interest of today’s students, and the financial viability of each major. Thus, signature programs share common characteristics that include a rich history of successful graduates, the potential to attract a large number of students, and boast strong, talented faculty members. Signature Programs
Commencement speaker Cecily Tynan, Action News meteorologist, WPVI-TV, addresses the Class of 2002.
President’s Message include Biology, Business, Computer Science and Information Technology, Education, English, Psychology, and Sociology. Each Signature Program will develop associated lecture series, seminars and/or symposia related directly or indirectly to the majors. Currently, three programs enable college students to achieve both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years; within the next five years that opportunity will be available to students enrolled in most or all of the seven Signature Programs. Integral to the teaching-learning model adopted by Chestnut Hill College are internships, reflective and service learning experiences.
6
Articulation Agreement The College has signed an articulation agreement with Manor College (PA) so that there will be an automatic transfer of credits to Chestnut Hill College when Manor graduates enroll here for their Junior and Senior years. We believe that positive recruitment outcomes will be realized from Manor.
Student Related Events
Essential Programs include majors that are integral to a liberal arts education, relevant to the needs of today’s world, attractive to prospective students, revenue producing, “one of a kind” majors that differ from offerings at area colleges, provide opportunities for internships, etc.
Student Government began the second semester by joining with the Committee of Leaders (chairs of clubs and committees) in planning a College-wide observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Service opportunities were available throughout the day. Many of the activities were on campus so that students could participate and still attend classes. There was a special lunch featuring southern cuisine. Films honoring Dr. King were shown throughout the lunch and dinner hours in the dining room. Materials were available for quilt making throughout the day outside the dining room. A non-denominational prayer service was held in the Rotunda and the celebration of non-violence ended with a program in the Social Room.
During the next year, the administrators and the faculty will continue to develop creative and visionary approaches to the curriculum and to the teaching/learning experience.
The Community Service Committee, a small, dedicated group of students continues to work in a quiet and effective manner. They sponsored/participated in the following:
Pre-Medical Advisory Board
• • • • • •
The official announcement about the Signature Programs was made to the faculty on December 7, 2001. Other Signature Programs may be added as appropriate. Final decisions about Essential Programs were made during the spring semester.
The College has introduced a Pre-Medical Advisory Board which met for the first time on November 29, 2001. The membership includes eight alumnae who are physicians and research scientists, as well as members of the Science faculty, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President. The Board will advise the College about matters pertaining to the preparation of students for medical schools and will mentor students interested in pursuing a medical career. It is our hope to start a Pre-Law Advisory Board as well.

During the College’s first year in the Atlantic Women’s College Conference, the sports’ teams fared well. The basketball team went to the championship play-offs and, for the first time in the College’s history, were a heartbeat away from the NCAA play-offs. With most of the team returning in the fall, next year is certain to
be a stellar one. Success was achieved by the softball team that won the Conference Championship right before this year’s commencement. The new facilities enjoyed by both teams have been a contributing factor in their achievements.
President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement For the first time, at the 2002 commencement, the president presented an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement to those graduates in the College for Women who completed their studies in four years at Chestnut Hill College and graduated Summa Cum Laude. The awards were bestowed upon Anne M. Cassavecchia, B.S., with a major in Psychology, a minor in Religious Studies, and a GPA of 3.992; Lisa Renee Clayville, B.S., with a major in BioChemistry, minors in Math and Chemistry, and a GPA of 3.954; and Stephanie M. Fornino, B.A., with a major in English, minors in Spanish and History, and a GPA of 3.992.
Graduate Studies Two new programs in the Graduate Division — the M.A./Certificate in Holistic Spirituality with a specialization in Healthcare and the M.S. in the Administration of Human Services — began to accept students in August 2001. Each program has attracted more students than anticipated. The PA Department of Education has approved the College’s application for Special Education Certification; this certification completes the process in the development of our five-year (B.S./M.Ed.) program in Education. Chestnut Hill College recently received its membership in the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE), an organization recognized as the primary approval body for human service education programs. This membership will enhance the visibility of our newest
President’s Message graduate program, Administration of Human Services, which continues to exceed its projected enrollment. In early January, a highly successful two-day training program for Stepfamily Therapy was offered on campus. Dr. Scott Browning, Associate Professor of Psychology, a recognized expert in this field, facilitated the program and provided one of the major sessions. The Festival of Spirituality was held June10 to 14. The major public lecture and course was titled ‘‘Mystics as Mentors – Rumi and Eckhart: A Muslim Sufi and Christian Mystic in Dialogue.” Two nationally known contributors to the academic study of mysticism and Sufism, Bernard McGinn (University of Chicago) and Franklin Lewis (Emory University) introduced an important dialogue about mysticism from two seemingly disparate faith traditions. Work progresses on the development of our Self-Study for the American Psychological Association accreditation review next year.
ACCELERATED Division While the business-related majors of Accounting, Management, and Business Communications combine to attract the most majors, the number of majors in Human Services and Criminal Justice is also high. The largest single major in the ACCELERATED Division is Criminal Justice; this high interest can be attributed to the College’s partnerships with the Philadelphia and Montgomery County Police Departments. The Upper Darby site opened in October 2000 and is now the College’s largest off-campus site. Yet another site was successfully opened at the Montgomery County Fire Academy in Conshohocken. An ACCELERATED Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance was proposed by the Business Department and approved by
the Board of Directors. An advisory council of executives in financial businesses met with the department and the division to suggest current issues for special topics courses. This new major offers two new courses in addition to courses already available in the business-related majors.
Institutional Advancement Alumnae/i Office The annual Alumnae/i Leadership Conference was held on October 21, 2001. Alumnae/i Achievement Awards were presented to Freda Gorelick Oben ‘40 (for scholarly research) and Barbara D’Iorio Martino ‘60 (for philanthropy). Marie DiBerardino, Ph.D. ‘48, an internationally recognized developmental biologist, delivered an informative keynote address on “The Ethics of Cloning and Stem Cell Research.”
Gifts and Grants The College has been awarded a second Global Education Grant by the Federal Department of Education, in the amount of $142,000 over two years. These funds will be used to launch the International Business, Language, and Culture Program. A portion of this money is to par-
tially pay for a faculty position in Spanish. The new Spanish professor will replace Sister Cecelia J. Cavanaugh, Associate Professor of Foreign Language and Literature, who has been appointed Acting Dean of the College for Women. The College has also been awarded a Division III Diversity Matching Grant for 2002-2005 in the amount of $72,000 by the NCAA Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Committee. This award will be used to hire an Assistant Director of Student Athlete Relations, who will be responsible for athlete training, SAAC and NCAA compliance. The Honickman Foundation has notified us that they have approved a $50,000 grant over five years to help fund the education of a Kirby student who is in need of financial assistance in order to attend college. Lynne Honickman received an honorary degree from the College at Commencement on May 4, 2002. She is a woman whose life exemplifies the highest values of our mission. We are surprised, pleased, and delighted by the unsought gift. Sister Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D. President
Georgia McWhinney, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, is the recipient of the Christian R. and Mary Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching announced at the 2002 Commencement ceremonies.

Opportunities for Providing Support
8
The needs of a private college in today’s world are many. As a small institution dedicated to teaching, Chestnut Hill College is largely tuition driven. Although tuition for undergraduates at Chestnut Hill College currently exceeds $17,000, it provides only 60 percent of the real cost of educating a student. To maintain its tradition of excellence in education, Chestnut Hill College seeks to make up the difference through contributions. The College receives no financial assistance from the Catholic Church or the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and funding from state or federal agencies is given only for specific projects or programs. Contributions from alumnae/i, parents and other friends to any of the funds listed below are investments in the College’s future and help assure that a Chestnut Hill College education will be available for future generations.
Annual Fund To supplement the operating budget, the College seeks contributions each year from alumnae/i, parents, and other friends. These gifts are used to help with general expenses, providing assistance with everything from library acquisitions and faculty salaries to utilities and instructional supplies. Because this fund is critical to day-to-day operations, the College stresses its importance to all donors, asking that they continue to support the Annual Fund in addition to any other areas of specific interest.
Reunion Giving Fund Every five years, as they celebrate the anniversary of their graduation, classes are asked to consider undertaking a special fundraising effort. Some have selected specific physical plant projects, such as renovation of the alcoves in St. Joseph Hall or restoration of the Rotunda. Others have elected to establish a scholarship fund or underwrite landscaping needs. These special projects have helped the College with the extraordinary expenses of maintaining a large, historic, aging physical plant and providing financial assistance for deserving students.
Endowment Fund Contributions to the institution’s endowment are invested and only the income is used each year. Donors have chosen to invest in the College’s future by endowing scholarships, lecture series, and other specially designed programs.

Capital Gift Initiative
Life Income Gifts
This effort, launched in 1997, seeks funds for several specific renovation and construction projects. The projects were identified through a careful analysis of the campus as part of a Site and Facilities Master Plan and have been determined by the Board of Directors to be essential to the College’s future growth.
Life income gifts may be funded through outright contributions or pledges of a variety of assets, including those mentioned above. Life income options also include:
Charitable Gift Options Chestnut Hill College is a tax-exempt charity, acknowledged by the Internal Revenue Service as rating a 501-C- (3) status. All contributions to Chestnut Hill College are fully tax deductible and may be given using any of the following methods:
Outright Gifts Gifts of cash may be given for any purpose. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Chestnut Hill College. Funds may also be transferred directly to the College’s account via wire transfer. Gifts of appreciated marketable securities may be transferred to Chestnut Hill College for any purpose. Securities may be given via electronic transfer or by reregistering the shares in the name of Chestnut Hill College and mailing the certificates to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. To avoid paying capital gains tax, the donor should give the shares directly to the College. As a tax-exempt organization, the College is able to sell the shares without paying tax. The donor’s income tax deduction is based upon the value of the shares on the date they are given to the College. Paid-up life insurance policies, real estate, gifts-in-kind, appreciated property, closely held stock and other holdings may
• Charitable remainder trust - separately managed trust funds that provide income to the donor for life. These may be established as annuity trusts, which provide a fixed amount of income, or as unitrusts, which provide income based upon a percentage of trust assets. • Charitable gift annuity - a type of insurance contract that provides a fixed income. • Deferred gift annuity - like a charitable gift annuity, a deferred annuity is a type of insurance contract that provides a fixed income. With this method, however, a donor contributes currently but does not begin receiving income until a later date.
Bequests Donors may choose to include Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, PA, as a beneficiary in their wills. The College may be named as the recipient of a specific amount or be designated to receive a percentage of the donor’s estate. Donors may indicate a specific use for the funds or designate that they are unrestricted.
Matching Gifts Those donors who are employed, or whose spouses are employed, by companies with matching gift programs can provide additional support for Chestnut Hill College by designating the College as the recipient of matching funds. Opportunities for Providing Support office or write to the Office of Institutional Advancement at the College.
Tribute Fund Donors can support Chestnut Hill College by honoring or memorializing a special person or event. Tribute cards are sent advising the designated individual(s) of the gift but not the amount. Forms are available from the Office of Institutional Advancement (215.248.7105).
Endowed Scholarships Chestnut Hill College Full-Tuition, Room and Board Awards To establish a perpetual full-tuition, room-and-board award, a minimum gift of $250,000 is needed. This principal will be invested and the income used for a CHC scholarship (full tuition, room and board) and reasonable administrative expenses. Matching Gifts Policies Chestnut Hill College welcomes matching gifts and encourages donors or their spouses who work for matching gift companies to apply for such donations. In administering matching gifts, the College follows national guidelines. Designation of matching gift funds is determined by each matching gift company. Funds are used for the same purpose as the employee’s gift when received from corporations that so stipulate. For funds received from corporations that designate the match as unrestricted, the purpose is determined by the College. Recognition of matching gifts is determined as follows: The match is the gift of the corporation. Companies are recognized in a special section of the Annual Report. The names of individuals who obtain matching gifts are listed in the Annual Report and annotated to show that the College was designated to receive a match. The amount of the matching gift is not used to determine the individual’s level of support; membership in gift clubs is determined only from the amount contributed directly by the individual donor.

Frequently Asked Questions 1.
I receive various appeals from the College throughout the year asking for donations. At times, this can be very confusing. Are these requests all for the same purpose? Please explain the difference between these funds. It’s understandable that there might be some confusion around these various requests for donations. CHC needs support for many programs. Here is a brief explanation of these different funds and how your contributions are used: • Annual Fund Just as there are certain basic needs within a family budget, the College’s budget handles day-to-day general expenses, providing assistance with everything from library acquisitions to instructional supplies to faculty salaries. Because student tuition covers only about 60% of the cost of a CHC education, the College seeks your help each year to supplement ever-increasing costs. Whatever the amount, your gift to the Annual Fund goes to work immediately to respond to these growing needs. • Capital Gifts Initiative This exciting and ambitious program seeks funds in stages for specific renovation and building projects on campus. Generous donations to Phase I of this program assisted in the construction of Barbara D’Iorio Martino Hall, completed in October 2000, and other improvements to the physical plant. Your response to future requests for pledges and contributions will help begin other campus improvements, including the restoration of the student dining area, new electrical distribution in Fournier Hall, classroom and dormitory renovations, and the creation of a fitness center. The improvements are all designed to improve academic and campus life for Chestnut Hill students.
10
• Reunion Giving Fund Because reunion is a special time for remembrance of years spent at CHC, reunion classes that are celebrating fifthyear anniversaries are asked to do something important for the College and its students by making an extra gift to Chestnut Hill to support different projects. The specific purpose changes each year, depending upon the College’s needs and the interests of the reunion classes. 2.
If I wish to contribute to various funds, do I have to write separate checks for each one? Is it possible to write just one check for all my donations? Yes, you may combine your contributions and write just one check, payable to Chestnut Hill College. But to assure that your donations go to the funds you are supporting, the College asks that you write the specific amount and purpose on the check memo line or include that same information in a letter. This way, your gift will be distributed precisely as you intended.
3.
When the College asks for donations, I always hear about the importance of increasing the “percent of participation” of alums. What does this mean, and why is this number so crucial? Giving to your alma mater sends an important message to other potential contributors. And that message is, “I believe in Chestnut Hill College and its future!” Because every gift you give represents a vote of confidence in Chestnut Hill, the total percentage of graduates and friends who give to the College is a critical statistic. It says to foundations and corporations who monitor this information, “If CHC alums believe enough in their College to give financial support, perhaps we should seriously consider funding some of its worthwhile efforts.” Institutions with low levels of support from graduates are less likely to receive support from foundation, corporations, and government agencies.
4.
Is the Development Office for the Sisters of St. Joseph the same as the College’s? Because Chestnut Hill College and the Sisters of St. Joseph are separate corporations and have different fundraising needs, there are two separate Development Offices. Donations to the College for its various needs are managed by the College’s Development Office, a part of the Office of Institutional Advancement. The Sisters have a Development Office that handles contributions to the Congregation only. Contributions are not shared by these distinct entities.
At the 2002 commencement ceremony, President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., announced the recipients of the President's Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, (left to right) Anne M. Cassavecchia, Lisa Renee Clayville, and Stephanie M. Fornino.
