CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE MISSION STATEMENT THE MISSION OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HOLISTIC EDUCATION IN AN INCLUSIVE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY MARKED BY ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, SHARED RESPONSIBILITY, PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH, SERVICE TO ONE ANOTHER AND TO THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY, AND CONCERN FOR THE EARTH. Chestnut Hill College, founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1924, is an independent, Catholic institution that fosters equality through education. Faithful to its strong liberal arts tradition, Chestnut Hill College offers academic programs of excellence in the areas of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing studies. True to its Catholic heritage, Chestnut Hill College espouses the beliefs and values inherent in the Judeo-Christian tradition while it respects the contributions made by other faith traditions in the development of the whole person. The College nurtures a sense of integrity, spirituality, and social justice in all. The College community dedicates itself to four purposes in fulfilling this mission. It seeks: • to provide avenues for students to achieve academic excellence and to pursue research in their major field or in interdisciplinary studies. The College encourages students to explore and experience diverse curricula and to participate in exchange programs over other institutions of higher education. • to initiate links between the world of learning and the world of work through curricular planning, technological opportunities, and career preparation. The College guides students in applying theoretical learning through experiential education designed collaboratively by faculty and students. • to uphold an atmosphere of communal respect in which all may clarify and articulate personal values and beliefs while exploring the ethical and moral dimensions underlying all relationships. The College encourages inter-faith opportunities by acquainting all students with Catholicism, its theology and its Judeo-Christian roots, and by engaging in dialogue with women and men of other beliefs.

elebrating Scholarship: Chestnut Hill College Faculty Scholarly Activities 2011–2012 marks another year of honoring the accomplishments of our Chestnut Hill College faculty. The College has a long tradition in excellence in educating undergraduate women and men in the liberal arts and professional graduate students in their respective disciplines. In our world today we need students who are well prepared to meet the complexity and challenges that a global community brings to us every day. Our faculty are the conduit of the knowledge, creativity and readiness demanded in this environment. When we look at the breadth of our Chestnut Hill College faculty’s scholarly activities, we are reminded and grateful for the groundbreaking work thirty years ago of Ernst Boyer and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Connecting research and scholarship with teaching gave new recognition to all faculty in higher education. Faculty at Chestnut Hill College model in their teaching, scholarship and service the very heart of our mission in action. The work of faculty does not conform to the boundaries of nine-to-five. Their work with students in-class and outside, along with their service to the College, has become a twenty-four seven commitment in the world of twenty-first century education. This means the time they carve out for scholarly activities is vital to sustaining the highest quality educational experience we can deliver for our students. Chestnut Hill College is fortunate to have a faculty who are dedicated teachers and scholars. They represent the College through their publications, presentations and leadership in their respective disciplines and professional organizations. It is with our sincere appreciation and continuing support for our faculty’s work that we now recognize and applaud their efforts from this past year.

• to create local and global connections that enable students to respond to the needs of others through service-oriented enterprises. The College educates students to identify and to address issues of social justice and to work toward systemic change. Approved by the Chestnut Hill College Board of Directors, October 7, 2002.

Lakshmi Atchison, Ph.D. Professor of Biology

• Received Patent for Blood Cell Model: Dr. Atchison newly devised a visual blood cell model, an educational tool to quickly grasp the normal and abnormal blood cells during pathological conditions. It took six years to refine and develop the model, testing the model in the classroom, and receiving positive feedback from the students. The success of this invented product was measured by student’s comments which are in the excellent range, remarks by college teachers, and medical professionals. The model has great potential and can be used at all levels from high school, college, nursing schools, medical schools, in doctor’s offices and healthcare professionals to explain many kinds of leukemia and other blood cell disorders. Leukemia, in particular affects people of all ages and doctors can have the blood cell model in offices to explain to patients, parents and kids on the nature of the disease. The Patent for the blood cell model has been recently approved and confirmed on October 2, 2012 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. • Publication: Dr. Lakshmi Atchison wrote an article entitled “Think Inside the Box: The Human Skin Model, the Forty Layers, Hidden Proteins, Pigments and Derivatives Simplified” [published in Human Anatomy & Physiology Educator, HAPS-Edu, 2012]. The purpose of this model is to simplify presentation of the complexity of human skin. When students are questioned about the number of skin layers present in the human body, they usually respond that there are two, or at the maximum three layers. The correct answer is that humans have forty layers! The human body is protected with 40 skin layers collectively called the integumentary system. This system is a very complex organization of multiple skin layers containing proteins, skin pigments, nerve receptors, blood vessels, hair follicles, subcutaneous fat and other derivatives that protect our bodies. Buried among the outer skin layers are keratins which are insoluble proteins that protect our body. Keratin is also a key structural component of hair and nails. Other proteins in the skin give skin elasticity, tonal quality and durability, and others provide immune functions. In addition to proteins, buried among the skin layers are special pigments that generate shades of skin color. Our skin also contains numerous skin pores through which many watery and oily chemical substances are secreted that keeps our skin soft and pliable thereby protecting the body from invading bacteria and microbes. Scattered among the skin layers are various skin receptors that give a variety of sensations. Using the simple hands-on model described here, students are able to quickly grasp the complex structure of skin and its multiple layers. The model can use any square or rectangular plastic box as an educational tool. Using this as an educational tool, one can “think inside the box” to create a skin model by arranging stacks of precut papers corresponding to the number of different skin layers or strata. Various types of cells that appear on these layers can be drawn on the top most layers to represent those specific strata. In addition, the distribution of various pigments can be shown by placing very fine color dots on the layers where the skin pigments are located. The tiny hairs that pierce through the superficial sweat pores can be shown by minute camel hair peeking from the tiny pores of the surface layer. The blood capillaries and subcutaneous fat can be shown by placing precut reddish and yellowish soft quilts in the bottom of the box. This model enables students to: a) comprehend quickly the complexity of skin structure, b) remember the various skin layers and numbers c) understand the location of various proteins and pigments, and d) comprehend the complex structure and physiology of skin that constitutes the integumentary system crucial for maintaining our body’s thermoregulation and homeostasis.

• A Pocket Guide on 8 Cancers: Dr. Atchison, with her husband, Dr. Michael Atchison (University of Pennsylvania), revised the pocket guide on “Eight Cancers that Can Affect High School and College Age Students: Prevention is the Best Medicine,” 2012. The booklet is filled with acronyms to capture the young reader. Her goal is to educate high school and college age students on cancer prevention to reduce the future cancer burden in this country. She obtained the ISNB # for the pocket guide through her attorney. • Participated in Penn Symposium: Dr. Atchison attended the Penn Symposium in honor of Ralph L. Brinster, VMD, PhD. Earlier, Dr. Brinster received the National Medal of Science from President Obama at the White House in October of 2011. Many internationally acclaimed biomedical professionals spoke in the symposium, and this gave the opportunity for Lakshmi to personally meet the Nobel Laureate Michael Brown, and to invite him for Chestnut Hill College’s 20th anniversary of the biomedical lecture series. Dr. Brown graciously accepted the invitation to be the keynote speaker at the 20th anniversary celebration of the biomedical lecture series to be held in fall of 2013.

Appointment Elected Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Dialogic Pedagogy: International Open Access Journal to issue its first call for papers by the end of 2012. Conference and Journal Organization and Programming • Conference organizer and co-chair: Mini-Bakhtinian Conference in Education: “Promises and Challenges in Dialogic Pedagogy” (http://diaped.soe.udel.edu/dp-map/?reload=1&page_ id=766). • Foundational work on a new international journal in education, Dialogic Pedagogy: An International Open Access Journal (http://diaped.soe.udel.edu/dp-map/?reload=1&page_ id=566) Dialogic Pedagogy Journal (DPJ) — Founding of a new international open access journal in Dialogic Pedagogy. More than 270 scholars from 35 countries have responded to a straw poll regarding the need and the significance of having a journal dedicated to the issues of dialogic pedagogy. From the DPJ Aims and Scope document: “The purpose of this international peerreviewed interactive online open access journal is to advance international scholarship and pedagogical practice in the area of dialogic pedagogy and education. We loosely define “dialogic pedagogy” as any scholarship and pedagogical practice, from educational researchers and practitioners, which values and gives priority to “dialogue” in learning/teaching across a wide range of institutional and non-institutional learning settings. We believe that the journal on dialogic pedagogy has to promote a public discourse on what dialogue and dialogic pedagogy is and means rather than provide gatekeeping, censorship, or silencing of other approaches in the name of “true dialogue,” “true dialogic education,” or “true dialogic pedagogy.” A journal on dialogic pedagogy should not censor ideas, nor develop an (impossible) consensus. Rather, the journal is founded on the idea that the scholarly community should engage in dialogue about the meaning of dialogue in pedagogy, that is, to practice what it preaches. Through dissemination of scholarship in the journal, scholars will have an invaluable opportunity to engage in an international debate about what “dialogic pedagogy” means, across a diverse range of ideologies, values, settings (e.g., formal institutional and informal), histories, countries, social groups, and cultural practices. Discussions of a dialogic research methodology and debating epistemological, moral, political, and ontological issues in dialogic pedagogy are welcome as well.” http://diaped.soe.udel. edu/dp-map/?reload=1&page_id=566
