Cheam Camera Club End of Season Review 2015 - 2016 From the Editor Jonathon Bartle explains why he has prepared this Review:

This time last year I hadn’t been a member of a camera club, but was aware of their existence because a good friend kept telling me about how much he enjoyed his local photographic society. I could also see how his photography skills had improved so I decided to follow his lead. Mentioning my plans to my neighbour, we agreed to investigate. In September last year, Gerald Sorenti and I found ourselves being enthusiastically welcomed into Cheam Camera Club. We were encouraged to sit in the front row of the first colour print competition of the season and were amazed! Watching the succession of stunning photographs, we wondered whether we were capable of such a standard. Certainly I wouldn’t be putting forward any of my images until I was much better – or so I thought! In the following weeks I became so enthused that my family, friends and colleagues were bombarded with tales from the Club and attempts to describe the astounding images that I had seen. The Club members have been welcoming and supportive; so much so that I was persuaded to enter images into the projected digital image competition. I was hooked! During the season I have enjoyed the friendliness and helpfulness of the members and presenters, my photography has progressed, and the various social events have been great fun and rewarding. The Club’s web site and Facebook pages provide excellent channels to showcase some of our fine work and activities at the Club. Nevertheless I thought that a more tangible, printable document could be an additional way to share news and images with our members (electronically or printed). Additionally it could be emailed to local blog sites and libraries to promote our Club more widely and perhaps help increase our membership, as well as benefit those members who may miss meetings or not have access to the web. I mentioned this idea to our Chairman and he encouraged me to prepare an end-of-season review. With considerable help from others, here is the Cheam Camera Club 2015-16 Review. If the members are supportive, starting from the 2016-17 season, I will start publishing a newsletter, probably every two months. More details are on the back page, but I will need help from others. I believe that such a newsletter can benefit our members and help to raise our profile. I hope you agree.

End of Season Review - July 2016

A message from the Chairman At the Club’s Annual General Meeting on 25 May Michael Butcher reflected on the 2015/16 season so far: This has been a mixed year. Despite a drop in membership, the Club is in a strong position. Club nights are well attended by enthusiastic members. Of course Andy Tijou will be missed greatly; he was a tower of strength in technical matters and we wish him well in Southend. I start by making another appeal to the membership to fill the vacant roles of Vice Chairman, FSLPS Representative and Social Secretary. These are important roles within the Club and it is vital to fill them. The FSLPS role in particular provides an excellent opportunity for you to see a far wider variety of work than is shown on a Club night. Some of us think that the quality of work produced by clubs within the FSLPS is often superior to that seen within the SPA. The representative’s role is, in the main, administrative, working alongside the Selection Committee, which is responsible for selecting the panels of work for the Club’s competition entries. The role involves a lot of organising and some travel on competition evenings. Unfortunately if a volunteer does not step forward the Club will have to consider withdrawing from the FSLPS. I am sorry that Carole Baker will step back from for her role as Social Secretary from the end of the season. She has organised some excellent events for members and kept us up to date with events, both local and national. I thank her for her energy and imagination. I was disappointed at our lack of involvement at the Belmont Festival. This was an opportunity to promote the Club within the local area, and to fulfil the commitment we made in support of our successful application for a Lottery grant. I encourage you to look for opportunities for outreach to the community, as well as to promote the Club and encourage new members to join. As you know, the 2016/17 season will be my last as Chairman and it is crucial to appoint a Vice-Chairman who can work alongside me, learning the ropes and deputising when I am away. I particularly thank Moira Taylor, Michael Nightingale and Marian Guess for kindly standing in during my occasional absences during the 2015/16 season. Nevertheless I am pleased to report that there have been positives during the season. The Club reached the finals of the FSLPS colour print competition, coming a close second to Beckenham. Nishi Sharma has taken on the role of SPA representative and has made a solid start. I should also thank Nishi for his admirable work on the website and his support of Carole in developing the Club’s Facebook page. I also thank Colin Churcher for stepping in to run the PDI competition when the then Digital Team Leader resigned early in the season. Subsequently Elvio Morcillo kindly agreed to take on the role permanently. He has a good team around him, as was shown by the successful running of the remaining rounds of the PDI competition. Once again the New Year dinner in Ashtead was well received and well attended. I thank Marian Guess and the Programme Committee for having produced another excellent programme for the season and I remind you that Marian always welcomes ideas for future programmes. The Club has been fortunate to receive a legacy from Susan Hill’s estate. Her family has asked for it to be spent on a suitable trophy as an annual award in Susan’s memory. Remembering Susan’s great encouragement for beginners, among her many other attributes, the Committee has decided to institute the Susan Hill Award for Newcomer of the Year. It will be awarded with the other trophies at the annual presentation evening in December to a member of not more than two full seasons. It will recognise that member’s progress as a photographer and contribution to the life of the Club. The balance of the legacy will be used to buy a replacement laptop. I have many colleagues to thank for their support and advice. First I wish to thank the Club President, Moira Taylor, for her support and wise advice. Also my thanks go to the Vice Presidents, Trevor Burton and Derek Hyde, for their continued interest. Trevor is the unsung hero at the Club, always doing the unexciting but vital work behind the scenes that many members do not see. I also thank my fellow Committee members for their support over the year. On behalf of the Club I thank the Selection Committee for their hard work, and in particular those three members (Margot Baker, John Hallam and Moira Taylor) who are standing down. I remind you that the Selection Committee can only work with what material they have available and I appeal to members to make sure they give that Committee their best work. There are other people worthy of special praise. The efforts of Kevin Austin as Internal Print Competition Co-ordinator and Michael Nightingale as New Members and Publicity Officer have made an important contribution to the success of the Club. I also want to thank Debbie Arnell for her care and elbow grease in preparing the Club’s trophies. Lastly I applaud the many Club members who served on the tea trolley and made an effort to put away chairs and help with the preparation of print racks and other kit on Club evenings. Many hands did indeed make light work!

Annual Exhibition Graham Head (Exhibition Secretary) writes about…

The Club’s Annual Exhibition at Bourne Hall, Ewell (18 - 23 April 2016)

Judge, Don Morley, at the member’s private viewing on 20 April, expressing his delight at the wonderful images. He said it was a difficult task selecting the eventual winners.

As ever, your photographs were fantastic and attracted many favourable comments. The exhibition could not be achieved without the help of many people, whether in helping to set up, stewarding, looking after photos from friends, sorting out the bills etc. Thank you one and all. I must though give a special (or should it be honourable?) mention to Elvio. He only recently picked up the lead for our digital work. His contribution behind the scenes to help with setting up the exhibition went beyond the call of duty, including having to load all the images twice, which takes some time. Elvio – thank you. The new voting slip with a space to provide contact details for those interested in the Club was a great success. It provided twenty new names, so Michael Nightingale will be busy over the next few days. We received 204 public votes, so thank you to all the stewards for encouraging people to vote; it was very close in the print and PDI categories. Congratulations to all those whose work was acknowledged by either the public or the judge, Don Morley. For the rest of us I hope we are inspired to see what we can achieve next year. You can even put the dates in your diary now, 3 - 8 April 2017. (Results overleaf)

End of Season Walk Carole Baker (Acting Social Secretary) writes about the end of season walk on 22 June 2016…

“Canal Culture and Contrasts” with tour guide, Marc Zakian Twenty-three members made the journey across London to Pudding Mill Lane, just on the outskirts of the Olympic Park. With a large amount of construction work still on-going at Pudding Mill Lane, it was interesting to hear the history of the site from Marc. The photo opportunities were endless, from the architecture of the stadium buildings, the unexpected nature photography and the people using the park that evening. We were so exceptionally lucky that the evening remained dry and the sky gave us some wonderful light against the building. The evening was warm, the information interesting and the stroll relaxing. It wasn’t long before the group had spread out, and were making the most of the photographic opportunities.

The evening concluded at the Crate Brewery, many stopping for a cold drink. Other members started their homeward journey. Some made the most of the last light! On a personal note, I found it somewhat uplifting that the games have left a wonderful legacy for the public. I was pleased to see families and friends enjoying the park on the warm evening, and most of all I was encouraged to see work progressing to make the area even better. I will most definitely go back with my tripod and filters to enjoy the area some more.

The Summer Barbecue Carole Baker (Acting Social Secretary) writes about…

The Summer BBQ at Box Hill Church Hall and Paddock, 25 June 2016 The last week has been subject to a major question amongst the people of Great Britain… “IN or OUT?” The same question has also been asked many times by the members of Cheam Camera Club this week. For the last few years we have concluded IN but just like the people of Great Britain – we voted OUT. Yes, we enjoyed the Summer BBQ OUTside this year…… well about 52% of the day was OUT, with the remaining 48% IN! The weather was fairly kind, staying dry long enough to have our main course outside – even time for seconds for some! The day was easy, company good and lots of time to enjoy the company of fellow members. As our minds turned to dessert the thunder rolled above us, by the time the rain came down most members had settled inside. Desserts are always the highlight of the day – which this year included the most magnificent fruit salad, kindly made by Martina. Many members, as I understand managed, first, seconds and third for the dessert course!! [Editor’s comment: I confess I over indulged and enjoyed every moment!] The raffle concluded a wonderful relaxing day, everyone leaving with something! Maybe I’ll pack a little extra Sunshine for next year – see if we can manage all day in the sun!

End of Season Review - July 2016

2016-17 Newsletter Jonathon Bartle (Editor-in-waiting) writes about his views for a regular newsletter at Cheam Camera Club:

So there you have it. Now you’ve seen the Cheam Camera Club Review of 2015/16. I hope you agree that our members take truly spectacular photographs that we should be proud to promote. Producing this review has been challenging and I have relied on significant assistance from various people at the Club. I thank you. I am grateful to those of you who have permitted me to include your images here and I apologise to those who gave me images that were not used for one reason or other, but certainly not because they weren’t good enough! This review has covered the whole of the 2015/16 season and incorporates many of the year’s images. Unfortunately I couldn’t write about everything the Club has done, so I’ve focused on a couple of recent social events and our in-house competitions. There could have been much more! In future, I propose that a Newsletter is published approximately every two months with the first being published in early November after a round of each of the internal competitions (deadline for submissions 21 October). The content should be different too and certainly not as long as this. As a starting point I suggest that articles cover: • Images and results from internal and external competitions; • Write-ups of recent events at the Club (e.g. walks, talks, members’ evenings); • Results tables with running totals of our the various categories of competition; • Perhaps a technical section (e.g. a brief ‘how to’ guide); • Details up-coming events; • Ad-hoc article about individual members and their photography; • Club contacts and links. These are my initial ideas and I would welcome your feedback and suggestions. There is a “but” however!.... Although I am very happy to be collator, co-ordinator, editor, chaser etc., a successful newsletter will need input from others at the Club. I certainly don’t have a writer’s talent and would need support to provide a variety of articles. Without such a collective effort I suspect our newsletters would become dull, perhaps too burdensome for one individual to produce, and may eventually fail. We are a great Club with talented photographers; let’s show those skills more widely! Please send me your feedback by email to newslettercheamcc@gmail.com.
