Cheam Camera Club December 2016 Newsletter From the Editorial Team Jonathon Bartle describes what has happened since the 2015-16 Review:
This time last year I had thoroughly enjoyed my first few weeks of membership at Cheam Camera Club. Throughout the season I continued to be amazed at the standard of your photography and, with help from many of you, I put together the 2015-16 Review to show off some of our stunning images and described a few of the Club’s activities. If you would like a copy of the Review please contact me by emailing newslettercheamcc@gmail.com.
Contents
Following encouraging feedback, I wanted to take the project further by publishing a regular newsletter. I hoped it would be an additional way to share news and images with our members (electronically or printed), supplementing the Club’s web site and Facebook pages which already provide excellent channels to showcase some of our fine work and activities at the Club. Additionally the newsletter could be emailed to local blog sites and libraries to promote our Club more widely and perhaps help increase our membership, as well as benefit those members who may miss meetings or not have access to the web.

In the first weeks of the 2016-17 season, following my initial proposals, two of our members, Debbie Whitton and Carole Baker, showed interest in helping and together we have become the (unofficial!) Cheam Camera Club Newsletter Editorial Team. I’m sure you’ll agree, they have done a fantastic job, setting a high standard for what’s to follow. I’m sure we all gain from our experiences at the Club whether it be simply an enjoyable evening out on Wednesdays, the opportunity to learn from helpful members and presenters, have our images critiqued by judges or take part in the fun social events. The Team’s aim is to give a flavour of the spirit of the Club, covering all aspects of our activities and if you, as members, continue to be supportive, we aim to make the Cheam Camera Club Newsletter a regular feature, probably having three editions per year. In this edition we have presented a number of articles, several involving input from other members; thank you to those of you who have helped. Clearly the Newsletter will rely on contributions from others and this has been a positive start.

From the Archives An extract from Cheam Camera Club’s handbook (undated) describes the beginnings of the Club:
How we started “It was in 1965 that the life of Cheam Camera Club began as a group of seven people, of whom one of our late Presidents, Tom Bothwell, was one. They met in the cellar of The London Tavern, Sutton and called themselves “Group 30”, hoping to build up to this number of members. However, this group quickly changed its venue to two other pubs in turn and also changed its name to the Cheam Photographic Society, with a proper constitution and committee, and grew to almost the 30 members envisaged. A further move brought the club to The Studio, Old Barns Close, Cheam where the club was to remain for the next 20 years. The name of the club was changed during this period to the present known Cheam Camera Club. The club was affiliated to the Central Association of Photographic Societies (an organisation recently disbanded) and also joined the Surrey Photographic Federation (now known as the Surrey Photographic Association) to which it still belongs. The move to the club’s present home in St. Andrew’s Church Hall gave the club new impetus, together with its membership of the Federation of South London Photographic Societies and it now numbers 30-40 members. The club enjoys a varied programme of entertainment, education and competition from which all members benefit in one way or another. Photographic outings are arranged from time to time and many leading photographers are invited to talk to us about their own field of photography.” [Editorial comment: The current 2016-17 membership is over 60 members.]
Who are these people? Can you identify these past and present members? Answers to Jonathon Bartle or by email to newslettercheamcc@gmail.com.

An Interview with… Debbie Whitton met with Ron Taylor in November, a member of the Club since the 1970s: It seems Ron Taylor has a lot to thank his mother for. When she heard of his plans to follow in his father’s footsteps in his career as a long distance lorry driver, she told him to think again. How did you become involved in photography? My mother saw an advert for a Messenger Boy with a news agency, PA Reuters, on Fleet Street and I got the job. There were 7 of us taken on, we soon knew all the pubs and clubs around, as we had to go and find the photographers and that’s where they were. I earned £2 a week minus half a crown for insurance. I was offered an apprenticeship in the dark room side of things – they were the happiest days of my life, we were always up to something. We’d be up to our arms in freezing cold water in the finishing room, then into the dark room to develop the prints, using all the chemicals; developers, intensifiers and so on. Then Associated Newspapers (Evening News, Daily Mail, Daily Sketch and the Sunday Dispatch) wanted 2 men at short notice to go anywhere in the country, so I put myself forward for that. We worked with 2 mobile dark rooms that weighed around 70-80lbs each, plus all the other kit we had to carry about. I worked for them for 28 years. Wherever we went we tried to set up our mobile dark room near the telephone exchange. The photographers would come back with their 7x5 plates; I’d develop them in the mobile and give them to the wireman, who’d transmit them to the office in London. They called me ‘the disaster man’. We went to plane crashes, railway crashes, bridges swept away, and mining accidents. We were the first crew on the scene at Aberfan……We flew up there via Cardiff, got into the exchange, put a couple of tables together and threw the mobile over them. One of us was developing and one printing. I can still see it now, and it still brings a lump to my throat………We went to Northern Ireland to cover the Orange Boys March in Londonderry as well. I remember ringing my wife Susie and saying ‘I’m alright, we’re in the telephone exchange’ and she said ‘yes, but on the news they’re saying that the police station next to the telephone exchange has been bombed….’ I was sent to cover that 3 times, it got a bit much after a while. Someone suggested it might be a good idea if we got passports, and I happened to be chatting to a lovely lady at a party who asked us all what we did for a living. I told her that we wired photos for same day printing in the evening editions, and she thought that was fantastic. A week later my guvnor called me in and said ‘you’ve opened your big mouth again, haven’t you…….you’re off to Paris’. Turned out this lady was the Fashion Editor of the Evening News, she wanted us to cover Paris Fashion Week and send all the photos back the same day. She was so pleased we’d beaten the Evening Standard to it. I saw some wonderful things - the launch of the QE2 in 1967, Francis Chichester after he’d won the round the world solo race – I stayed down there for 3 days, and that’s the only time I’ve ever had steak for breakfast. I got a lift back to RAF Northolt on a Shackleton airplane and took photos from the radar box in the plane’s nose. As we landed, one of the engines caught fire, and we were met by a fire engine and an ambulance. My mate was more interested in the bottle of brandy in the officers’ mess! Then of course colour and new technology came in, we went to Kodak to learn, and some of us were made redundant. I went to work as a chauffeur and then for Trueloves. I’ve belonged to the Camera Club for 40 years, I loved it – I could at long last take pictures of what I was interested in. Which is your favourite camera? My Agfa, which Susie bought for me for our honeymoon, 54 years ago. I still have it upstairs. Cheam Camera Club:

A Judge’s View Graeme Wales LRPS tells us about his experience of becoming a judge: As a teenager I experienced two defining moments that would influence my life: Dr Who and Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film ‘Blow up’. In this film, for the first time I saw the magic of working in a darkroom and the glamour of 1960s photography. I saved up my pocket money and having read many copies of the Amateur Photographer, I bought my first 35mm SLR, a Practika, which I still own. My father helped me build a darkroom in the loft – which was a bit difficult, as there was no running water there! But nevertheless, I experimented with film processing and monochrome printing as well as dipping into Cibachrome. At the age of 16 I joined Bath Photographic Society where I learnt about composition, the RPS, and could only marvel at the high standard of darkroom printing by club members. Back then removing dust spots was the usual comment from the judge. Years later, having retired as a teacher, I found that I missed performing to an audience! If I had a go at judging, it could be a way to improve my own photography and use past skills. The first judging workshop was tough. My experience of club competitions was only 2 years. Although friendly and encouraging, this workshop was professionally run by people who knew exactly what they wanted in a judge. There were 10 of us, and 6 tutors. An intimidating experience as all 6 tutors were absolute top of the range photographers / judges! Soon I was going to have to stand up in front of the other delegates and perform. Heart pumping, I wasn’t taking anything in. Wish I had gone to the loo beforehand. In the split second after the print was placed on the lightstand, I had to critique the image. Thankfully most of us made various mess ups with our analysis. After a debrief it was now obvious that a few of us were promising, but sadly I was not one of them. I was asked to go back and attend a second workshop just over a year later. I have to admit, I wasn’t looking forward to going back. Since the first session, six of the original 10 had for one reason or another dropped out. That encouraged me a bit, as it now seemed that some were more petrified than me! The entire day, close on six hours, was spent honing our observational skills by spotting all the positive and negative aspects of prints and PDIs that had been carefully chosen to have problems. It was rather like one of those ‘Spot the difference’ puzzles. Although here you had nothing to compare against, but ‘on the hoof’ you had to quickly find and constructively comment on each image. Each was classified as belonging to a Standard or an Advanced worker, and thus comments were directed accordingly. Later that day I received an email to say that I had passed. Surviving a judging workshop is the tough part. The real thing I have to say is much more pleasant. My first performance was thankfully at a club who were both friendly and well organized. However to my concern, one of the tutors was a member of this club. Thankfully I got the right images at the top, which turned out to be from the most experienced club members, but of course that needn’t always be the case. After my performance the tutor came to the front, and not only congratulated me, but informed everyone that this was my first competition evening! I have since been invited back several times. Being a judge isn’t stand up comedy but it does help to remember that you are the entertainment for the evening! The beauty of it all is that you do not need a script. That is supplied by the titles and images! I always see pictures, when I am walking down the street, in people’s houses, in books, newspapers and on the television. I even see pictures in my viewfinder, but I do not always take them, as I hear the judge’s voice in my ear! If you have read so far, I hope some of my enthusiasm has rubbed off. Camera Clubs need judges, and new faces are always welcome. Why not give it a go? Try assessing the above images! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

In the background Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the Club? Carole Baker describes the various committees beginning in this edition with the Programme Committee: Over the coming season, we want to give you an insight into the various committees that exist within the club. All of the committees work hard in the background, allowing the club to function as it does on a weekly basis. Our first article puts the spot light on our Programme Committee – giving you a an outline on how the club selects the speakers and pulls together the amazing annual programme, under the guidance of Marian Guess. The Selection Committee will focus in our next newsletter, with our final newsletter of the year, to coincide with our club AGM, concluding with an article on the Main Committee. All of these committees benefit from members offering their help and ideas – should you feel after reading the articles that you have something to offer and are able to commit four or five evenings a year, then please do speak to Michael Butcher or Marian Guess, who would be more than willing to discuss the committees further. The Programme Committee: Current Programme Committee members are Marian Guess, Moira Taylor, Karen Begg, Keith Wellbelove and Carole Baker. The aim of this committee is to provide a diverse, informative, fun and full programme for each new season. The committee will, generally, meet four times during the current season to arrange the next season’s programme. In October we had our first meeting for the 2017/18 season programme. The first step is to confirm dates for the internal Colour, Mono and PDI competitions. We all bring suggestions for speakers, members evening and events that may prove interesting for the members. Although we as committee members have our own ideas – EVERY member of Cheam Camera Club is welcome to forward any suggestions or ideas to Marian for discussion and inclusion in the programme – in fact the more ideas and suggestions we receive the better! Our members’ evenings proved very popular last season, and we have continued to include these nights for both this season and the 2017/18 programme. We do, however, rely on our very talented members (yes, that’s you) to talk during these informative nights – if you would like to discuss techniques or photography – either to the whole group or perhaps, a little less daunting, to smaller groups then please let us know – we would be very happy to try and make all the arrangements, or perhaps put a little team together to progress ‘areas’ of photography. Our new members open evening also proved a great success this season and we hope to open the new 2017/18 season with a very similar event – would you like to suggest any improvements for the evening or volunteer to buddy up with a potential new member on the evening? Let us know…. it would be great to have more members involved. We are of course, now very much involved in booking our speakers and judges for the 2017/18 season but please don’t hesitate to contact us with additional suggestions! And finally, do let Marian know if you would like to sit on the committee in the future. An appeal for help: Carole Baker reiterates the message the Chairman has made in the past: The Club needs volunteers: Cheam Camera Club is in need of your urgent help. During my first season with the club, there were many things I wished the club did, one of which was club outings. Towards the end of the first season I started to volunteer my time; I am now acting Social Secretary, which means I attend the Main Committee meeting four times a year (evening) and I help with the Programme Committee - three or four times a year (evening). This allows me to suggest things that member may enjoy and have a small say in how the club moves forward, alongside other committee members. The Club is moving toward uncertain times. We are currently without a Vice Chairman. In May our Chairman will step down after serving for three years; he previously served as Vice Chairman, a post that has remained unfilled ever since. By the time of May’s Annual General Meeting, the club may very well have even more vacancies to fill. Volunteering does not have to be a massive commitment of time and we all know that many hands make light work. Nevertheless, the more you put into something the more you get out. There are many Committee members who spend a considerable number of hours behind the scenes but just a few hours could be just as useful to the Club. If you would like to offer your time or join the Committee then please do speak with Michael Butcher or if you just want to chat more informally about what is involved give me a shout.

Shedding some light In this section we aim to provide members with some hints and tips about different photography techniques. Here, Carole Baker shares some useful guidance about “Composition”:
Composition The internet is full of articles on composition, there are many books covering the subject and of course, you will have your own opinion on what is considered great composition within an image. There are many established guidelines that will enhance your images, drawing your eye to the most important parts of the image and leading the viewer’s eye through the image. The most important rules: Rule of Thirds (Source: photographymad.com)
Leading Lines (Source: Digital Photography School)
Framing (Source: photographyblogger.net)
Patterns, Symmetry and Reputation (Source: Digital Photography School)
Depth (Source: Digital Photography School)

SPA Inter-club Print Competition Surrey Photographic Association’s inter-club print championship is a much bigger annual competition in which all Surrey clubs can take part. Given the SPA’s membership of about fifty clubs, it was disappointing that only 21 had entered the Open class of the championships. Cheam Camera Club only entered the Open category, as we do not have enough nature prints to enter that category. As mentioned at the talk given this season by Philip Quarry, there was no critique of individual prints like you see in our Club competitions. With over 300 prints to be judged in the Open class alone, this would have been impossible. Instead prints are scored by three judges each voting electronically from 2 to 5 as prints are displayed about every ten or fifteen seconds. Thus the highest score possible is 15, and the lowest 6. A sizeable contingent of Cheam members travelled to East Horsley on Saturday 19th November to watch how the Club’s entry fared. Our selected prints were:

Club Events The Programme Committee’s plans are realised in a range of thoroughly enjoyable events:
Members’ Evenings The season started on 7 September with a fairly informal evening for members to get together, catch up on the events of the summer, and show some of their pictures. On 5 October a group of Advanced members shared their photographic ideas and techniques, demonstrating how they get the best out of their images.
Open Evening Our first New Members Evening, for several years, was held on 21 September. With 12 potential new members in attendance, we can class it as a success. Well done to Marian Guess and the Programme Committee for all the planning. 24 current club members attended the evening, discussing our club prints, projected digital images, social activities, camera equipment, external competitions, Lightroom examples and general club life. Michael Nightingale (New Members and Publicity Officer) was able to speak directly to each potential member during the evening and contact details noted for feedback on the event. Feedback will be sought from potential members who have so far, decided not to join, and new members that have already become full members. To date, four members Jane McGuire, Debbie Whitton, Colin and Michael Williams have all been welcomed within the group.
If you attended the evening, the Programme Committee would be most grateful for your feedback from the evening good or bad - so we can improve and fine tune the evening next time.

Nonsuch Park Outing By Carole Baker Having visited Nonsuch Park a couple of weeks prior to the club outing, and finding some wonderful light coming through the trees at the back of the wood, a very last minute decision to organise a walk to capture some Autumn Colour was made. With six members up and about early, off we set. The light wasn't great, but the autumn colours were starting to show well in the park. We enjoyed an hour or so wandering and then stood and tried to capture the far more energetic park runners. Discussions about fast shutter speeds or more 'artistic' slower shutter speeds were had. And we commented on how well the runners were doing, and was it really fair that we were capturing them while 'glowing' and out of breath...... maybe not an image for competition, just some images to practice our hand held photography!
Images by Jane McGuire
External Speakers We have had a fine selection of presentations and here’s a brief reminder….
An Introduction to RPS and PAGB Distinctions – Philip Quarry FRPS (19 October) Working towards a distinction can provide a real focus for your photography and a sense of achievement when you succeed. You also get letters after your name! Our presenter, Philip Quarry FRPS from Kingston Camera Club explained what is involved. Philip’s presentation covered the photographic distinctions that are awarded by the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB). Then Cheam Members who have achieved RPS distinctions show-cased their successful panels of prints.
Photoshop Elements For All Abilities – Lesley Cutting (2 November) Lesley considers herself more of a photo developer than a 'photographer'. As the new Millennium dawned, she saw the opportunity of combining her long-standing interest in computing with that of photography and dived into the, then relatively new, hobby of digital photography. When Adobe brought out Photoshop Elements in 2001, Lesley realised the potential and set about teaching herself. She started running courses as a direct result of the enjoyment received from digital photography - she wanted other people to have as much fun as she was having! Lesley explained some basics then proceeded to more advanced techniques in the second half about using layers and layer blends. Lesley has largely retired from running workshops and giving talks now so we were privileged to have her. Handouts (and subsequent email versions) were circulated. Please contact newslettercheamcc@gmail.com if you would like copies. Lesley’s book (downloadable from https://www.dropbox.com/s/i7e96ppj084lpbe/DigitalVersion.PDF?dl=0) was written for Elements 6, which looks different to more recent versions. However, the editing principles are the same; it's just a matter of spending a bit of time familiarising yourself with the changes. Cheam Camera Club:

Newsletter – December 2016 London by Night – Umbreen Hafeez (16 November) This very entertaining talk was about low light and long exposure photography in London. Having discovered photography 17 or 18 years ago, Umbreen travelled abroad to take pictures but then realised the potential on her doorstep in London. She now concentrates on slow exposure and low light photography indoors and outside in London. We have London on our doorstep so it was very interesting to see her pictures and hear about the techniques she uses. Some of her inspirational pictures can be seen at www.reallondonphotos.co.uk. Umbreen has agreed to run a workshop for CCC members - Carole Baker will send out details when arranged.
Is that it? – Leigh Preston FRPS EFIAP MPAGB (30 November) Leigh has been taking photographs for 40 years and mainly works in themes with a story line. He also relies on creating atmosphere and mood and works a lot in black and white. He also enjoys making portraits. He belongs to the Arena Group of photographers and the London Salon. He teaches photography in workshops and currently works with Permajet. He is a PAGB lecturer and judge. He has two fellowships, one of which was in darkroom printing. This was a thoroughly entertaining evening – excellent, sometimes quirky, pictures, spiced with some humour.
40 Below – Andy Skillen (7 December) Andy is an award winning wildlife photographer who lives locally. His talk concentrated on recent work he has done in the Arctic and Baffin Island particularly with polar bears. Some of his images are in the December issue of BBC Wildlife magazine as he worked on a commission on polar bears for them. Andy has been taking wildlife pictures for many years and has been published widely. More recently he formed a company, FaunaVista, to sell his own images and his photography can be seen at http://www.faunavista.com/ (a site created and maintained by Club member, Colin Miller). His presentation involved some video with music as well as PDIs and some of his gallery prints too. This was an exciting evening of high quality wildlife photography. Andy generously waived his fee, asking that the Club makes a donation to he David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (a charity funding projects in Africa and Asia to save critically endangered mammals in the wild). Andrew has agreed to run workshop for CCC members - Marian Guess will send out details when available.
Christmas Party and Awards Evening Chairman, Michael Butcher, presided over a thoroughly enjoyable evening, celebrating Club members’ successes in the 2015-16 season. He opened by saying what a fabulous season 2016-17 had been so far, noting especially the recent inspirational presentations. He voiced the Club’s best wishes for a speedy recovery for Trevor Burton following his recent operation, and also passed on seasonal wishes received from Graham and Janet Habbin. President, Moira Taylor LRPS, handed out the awards, details of which are set out overleaf. Following the presentation Michael gave particular thanks to Carole Baker for her organisation and all of her hard work, making the evening such a success. Those present heartily agreed! Well done and thank you, Carole.

Breaking News Project 52 - One Picture, Once a Week Carole Baker, Project 52 Co-ordinator, tells us about a photographic challenge for the New Year: On January 4th, via our Facebook page, Cheam Camera Club - Photography for All, we will be launching our very own Project 52. This, we hope, will be a fun way to encourage you all to pick up your camera once a week and share your images. The project will be open to all friends of our Facebook page. A 'subject' will be posted on our Facebook page every Wednesday morning and you have until the following Tuesday evening to post your interpretation on that given 'subject'. Please keep the images clean and comments friendly. This is designed to encourage photography at all levels! The subject may be an object, colour or photographic technique. There isn't a right or wrong image to post - it's just how you want to interpret the given 'subject'. You do need to be a friend of our Facebook page to join in the fun. If you do have a Facebook profile but have difficulty uploading images or finding our page please do not hesitate to contact me and I'll be more than happy to help. I will put a reminder up on Facebook a few days before to remind you to charge the camera battery and to get the creative hats out of the cupboard!
New Year Dinner Margot and Alan Baker describe the arrangements for the New Year Dinner: Wednesday 25 January 2017 at Il Laghetto Restaurant, 17 High Street, Ewell Village, KT17 1SB at 7.30 for 8.00 We found this little family restaurant, close to Bourne Hall, after our Exhibition this year. The food is good and we have been many times since. We suggested it might be tried out for this year’s Dinner and it has been decided that we should go there for a three-course meal including starter, main course, dessert and coffee at a fully inclusive price of £25. We hope you will come and enjoy the food and the friendly atmosphere. We will have the main room to ourselves, with the remaining parts for other customers. There will be seating for up to 40 for us so please book early. A deposit of £5 needs to be given to Colin and we will be asking you later for your choice from the first two courses so that we can let Antonio know in advance. (Editorial Update: At the time of the Awards Evening, there were only 2 places left!)
Internal Competition Email Requirements and Deadlines A reminder from the Digital Team: Projected Digital Images - The email for our PDI competition is Cheampdi@gmail.com. Colour and Monochrome Prints - Entry into both of our print competitions requires authors to send an email with the titles to Kevin Austin’ personal email address (KAUSTII@aol.com). Also, to aid the Selection Committee and to keep accurate records, authors should also provide digital versions of the prints if possible. If you haven’t sent Kevin the digital versions for previous print competitions please send them to him. The entry cut-off time for all of our internal competitions is at 8.00pm on the Monday on week of competition and regrettably entries received after these cut-off times may be excluded. The email for the exhibition PDIs is cheamexhibit@gmail.com and details of the submission requirements will be circulated in March.

Newsletter – December 2016
In summary Jonathon Bartle (Editorial Team) writes about the experience of creating this first edition:
So there you have it - that’s the first issue of the new series of the Cheam Camera Club Newsletters. Once again, I hope you agree that our members take truly spectacular photographs that we should be proud to promote. Thank you especially to my editorial team-mates, Debbie Whitton and Carole Baker, as well as others of you who have written articles. We are grateful to those of you who have allowed us to include your images. I reiterate what I have said before, we are a great Club with talented photographers; it’s great to show those skills off! This edition has only covered four months, but collating the articles has reminded me of the range of events the Club covers and shows the achievements of the Programme Committee. Never a dull week! Thank you. In future, we propose that the newsletter is published three times in the year, with editions at Christmas, Easter and end-of season. The Editorial Team planned this newsletter’s contents carefully and I think we have done well. One thing is for sure, and has been demonstrated with this issue, a successful newsletter needs input from a range of people at the Club. Again, thank you to those who contributed. Please give us your feedback by speaking to Debbie, Carole or me, or by email (newslettercheamcc@gmail.com) and give suggestions for future articles or volunteer to write something yourself. We look forward to seeing you in January, meanwhile we wish you…
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Just for laughs ‘Tis the season to be jolly, so here are a few jokes to make you groan, worthy of any cracker!... A photographer went to a dinner party where he showed many of his photographs. The host said “Those are wonderful pictures. You must have a great camera.” The photographer said nothing, but when leaving for home offered the following compliment to his host "The meal was delicious, you must have great pots and pans." Two photographers are travelling through a third world country and pass by a beggar on the street. One of the photographers asks the other one: "What did you give him?" The other photographer replies: "250th of a second at f5.6." And finally, saving the best to last… How does Santa take photos? With his North Pole-aroid!
