Joe Miller Painting for the Fun of It Wes Waugh Painting Bold and Controlled 04/27/2020 - 05/01/2020 Watercolor Levels 1 and 2 $575, WKSHP-00832 This is a beginner – intermediate workshop with some experience helpful. The class will cover the basic concepts of painting but will emphasize the importance of learning to control pigment mixtures and washes for painting bold and luminous landscapes. Wes teaches and demonstrates several techniques/strategies to help those struggling with watercolor “control” issues. Participants gain a better sense of what is happening on their paper during critical times, and thus can avoid some common pitfalls. Guided exercises will allow participants to experience and create the conditions needed for an effective wet-into-wet approach. Wes will clarify the subsequent stages to work through in order to “finish out” a painting as the drying process proceeds. A strong focus on understanding process as a means of achieving natural and expressive results takes priority over simply learning or following technique. Participants will be challenged to think like an artist and push themselves personally to expand upon their existing boundaries. Thus a “Wes Workshop” is information heavy, but participants feel fully supported in experimenting and taking risks as they explore the possibilities. Additional topics will be covered as time allows: Value, Color Harmony, and Design Principles for watercolor painting. Take home a truckload of information and new perspectives, but also enjoy the good humor and light-hearted moments experienced during the guided painting labs and demo sessions Wes has made the NC High Country his home for the past 30 years. He began painting at the age of 12, has held over 15 exhibitions, and has served as a workshop instructor, product consultant, guest presenter, and juror for many businesses and organizations over his painting career. Simultaneously, Wes has held a full-time teaching and administrative position at nearby Appalachian State University, citing equal devotion to both career settings. Wes describes his artistic influences as diverse, yet rooted in the translational and design influenced watercolor landscapes of the late Eliot O’Hara and Edgar Whitney. The Edgar Whitney “Tools and Rules” of design principles and concepts still hold a prominent role in his teaching approach. Wes is well known for his bold and colorist approach to landscape painting. He not only enjoys sharing techniques for how he achieves these results, but also discusses the important and sequential thought processes involved. The mindset we develop as aspiring artists plays a key role in his teaching activities and discussions. Wes regularly presents to groups on creativity and watercolor painting and is a featured artist contributor to the Palette Magazine. Wes has taught workshops at Cheap Joe’s for 20 years

We will paint from both still life arrangements and landscape photographs, working on one to two paintings per day. As a fine artist, JJ draws his inspiration from both his eastern and western cultural roots, as well as his inquisitive mind and inner poetry. He excels in drawing, watercolor and oil painting, while exploring subjects such as: still life, landscape/cityscape, portrait and figure, Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. His work has been widely exhibited, collected and has won many awards. He has been commissioned by major universities, including UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, and Duke, and also by the Town of Cary as well as the Goodnight family. JJ currently lives in Cary, NC and is the founder and director of the village Art Circle fine art gallery in the heart of downtown Cary. Skip Lawrence Not-So-Basic-Basics 08/31/2020 - 09/04/2020 Watermedia Level 2 and up $695, WKSHP-00866 Plan Thoughtfully- Paint Vigorously. The best approach to making art is the simplest idea done to perfection. The language of painting is based on design. The 5 considerations are: 1) dominance of an element, 2) deciding on the most appropriate contrast of value, color, line or texture for the subject, (3 making interesting and dynamic shapes, 4) treatment of edges: hard, soft, broken, and 5) what to do inside our well-designed shapes. We think of these as the words we use to write, but it is the story we are sharing, based on observations, emotions, and beliefs that make our work unique. Content (idea) and Form (tools) are absolutely a must if we are to make meaningful art. No one other than you can decide what your content is and the form that will best deliver your ideas. So, I ask each student to come the first day with an idea (subject), real or imagined, and decide on the tools that are most appropriate for your story. To help with these ideas I use a daily consideration: Day 1) dominance, Day 2) contrast- value, color, texture, etc., Day 3) shapes –dynamic or organic, Day 4) edges – soft, hard, broken, Day 5) inside shapes – pattern, texture, more shapes, and line. You can use any water based medium in this workshop Skip Lawrence is a 1966 graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art (BFA) and a 1971 graduate of Towson University, (MFA). Since graduation he taught high school in Howard County, MD from 1966 to 1972, and at Prince Georges College from 1974 to 1984, where he taught drawing, painting, art history, and sculpture (metal welding). Since 1976 Skip has conducted 15 to 30 painting workshops a year in all but five states across the United States. Skip paints in watercolor, oil, and acrylic. He is the Editor and Chief of the Palette Magazine, published by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, and has been since 1996. CHEAP JOE’S WORKSHOP CANCELLATION POLICY:
RETURN THIS FORM TO:
A $100 non-refundable cancellation fee applies if you cancel (or transfer to a different workshop) once you have registered (online, phone or otherwise) and have made a payment, regardless of the date. There is NO refund, for any reason, if you cancel the workshop within 60 days of the class. We understand that last minute emergencies, illnesses, or conflicts come up that can’t be controlled, and we are truly sorry, but due to committed expenses on the part of Cheap Joe’s, there are no exceptions. If Cheap Joe’s or the instructor cancels the workshop, a full refund or offer to switch to a different workshop will be issued. Travel insurance is highly recommended.

2020 GLOBAL WORKSHOPPER Welcome to the 2020 Edition of Cheap Joe’s Global Workshopper It is amazing how taking a workshop can help take your art to the next level. I have taken many and appreciate all that I have learned from them and the many friends I have made in each class. It is one of the best gifts I have ever given to myself and my art. I can name professional artists who regularly attend workshops. If you ask them why, you might be surprised at their answers. “It keeps me young.” - “It’s entertaining while we learn.” - “I wanted to jump start my art and it did.” I could go on and on. Each workshop listing that follows includes the sponsoring organization in red italics, the instructor’s name, date, class level, location, and contact information. Where the contact info remains the same, it is listed under the sponsoring organization name. Enjoy! Joe Don Andrews
