About the Crests & Tartan The Irish name Conley derives from a number of native Gaelic Septs living in the county of Galway. The white background of the crest denotes Peace and Sincerity. The cross in the style of St. Andrew signifies resolution and its black color denotes constancy and sometimes grief. The five shells signify great journeys undertaken by family members, as well as the Protection of Providence. The helmet topping the arms stands for wisdom and security, as well as strength and invulnerability. The Scottish name Mecaskey derives from a number of smaller families within the clan MacLeod. The Mecaskeys inhabited the Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland. The Mecaskey crest also sports a white background, with a green protection line, symbolizing Freedom, beauty, hope and loyalty in love. The two green trefoils symbolize perpetuity above a red lion’s head, the sign of a valiant warrior. Atop the helmet, a symbol of strength, sits a tethered cat- signifying liberty, vigilance and courage Joe and Hannah chose to use the ancient hunting Tartan of the MacLeods of Harris. Leod, son of Olaf, King of Man, is the progenitor of this clan. They acquired Dunvegan at an early date. The MacLeods of Dunvegan are recognized as the senior family of the MacLeods of Harris and Lewis, neighboring islands. They were a powerful clan and had great influence in the Highlands.
