hopping… isn’t that the most beautiful word in the English language? We know how much our readers love to shop and travel so Cheek2Chic indulges your passions with a whirlwind tour of the shopping capitals of the world, enjoying all the Christmas lights, window displays and decorations along the way. Retail therapy involves personalised shopping tours of London, enjoying the “window shopping” both inside and outside at New York’s finest department stores like Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Tiffany’s flagship Fifth Avenue store, Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman, and collecting enough designer packets to sink the Titanic at Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marche in Paris and 10 Corso Como in Milan. South Africa has some pretty splendid shopping of its own so our gift guide celebrates the best of local, from the awardwinning South African brandies and gins to the finest designs of South Africa’s jewellers. It’s a feast of cars, watches, champagne, luxury labels and handbags, with the chance to win luxury fragrances as well as a festive Crabtree & Evelyn hamper.
On the beauty front, editor Sarah Cangley needed to decompress after the rigours of 2016, so she tried out the Afrique in Harmony Balancing Massage at The Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff, in Johannesburg. The treatment is part of the hotel’s Jacaranda spa lunch package and was followed by the 4-in-1 express business lunch at View restaurant. Bulgari held an Italian Garden party to celebrate its Sandton City boutique opening, Britain’s leading luxury watch exhibition Salon QP took place at the Saatchi Gallery in London and the 16th Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève celebrated the art of watchmaking at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva. For all our readers, we hope that you have an enjoyable festive season and that 2017 will be greeted with the finest bubbles available. Happy New Year!

If it’s the art of the Christmas store window you are after, no one can hold a candle to New York’s finest. Macy’s was one of the first department stores to put up a special holiday presentation featuring scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and also featured an in-store Santa for children. Today creating the most elaborate window displays at Christmas has generated intense rivalry, making stores like Saks Fifth Ave, Bloomingdales, Macy’s and Barneys
destination attractions and inspiring movies like “Scatter my Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman”. This year, all Bergdorf Goodman windows on Fifth Avenue, 57th Street and 58th Street celebrate the transporting theme of “Destination Extraordinary”. The displays depict a dreamlike itinerary of lush locales, unexpected landscapes and verdant gardens, inspired by the paintings of Henri Rousseau and 12th century Chinese watercolor mountainscapes as some of the inspirations for the larger-

Writer, bon-vivant, window dresser, fashion commentator and “creative ambassador-at-large” Simon Doonan creates enchantment at Barneys New York year after year. This year Barney’s windows, at both its Madison Avenue flagship and its downtown flagship store in Chelsea, celebrate its “Love Peace Joy Project”, creative interpretations of love, peace and joy by celebrated visual
and performance artist Nick Cave, contemporary artist Rob Pruitt, artist collective Studio Job, mixed media artist Ebony G Patterson, and Trey Parker and Matt Stone of Comedy Central’s South Park. Shoppers are encouraged to take selfies in front of the store windows, making either a heart or peace sign with their hands or jumping for joy. Tiffany & Co has a wonderful tradition of fantastical windows, first with Gene Moore, one of the 20th century’s leading window dressers from 1955 to 1998, and today with Englishman Richard Moore, formerly with Liberty London. Moore (no relation to his predecessor) employs a painterly approach to his windows, forming collaborations with fashion designer Rachel Zoe and costume designer Catherine Martin to produce windows full of Hollywood glamour or decadent Jazz Age scenes evoking The Great Gatsby.
This year’s Tiffany-blue Fifth Avenue display is called “Make the World Sparkle”. Paris, the City of Lights, completely dazzles visitors with its Christmas markets and high-wattage illuminations. The entire Avenue des Champs-Élysées is illuminated from the top down, culminating in an brightly lit Ferris wheel at the Place de la Concorde. Besides being a veritable emporium boasting over 3500 brands around the world Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann has created the most delicious “Arctic Christmas” displays this year, with magical animated allwhite windows full of an enchanting array of polar bears and penguins who “live a fairytale in an immaculate world”, frolicking, dancing, playing and whizzing over every floor of the store before making their way back to the North Pole.

heek2Chic editor SARAH CANGLEY experienced The Four Season Westcliff Jacaranda spa lunch package at Johannesburg’s leading day spa, a resort-style urban retreat. Her treatment room overlooked the outdoor infinity lap pool and bright exterior. Before and after my “Afrique in Harmony Balancing Massage”, I relaxed at Après Spa, the city’s only outdoor spa lounge, while enjoying rooibos flavoured
water and light cuisine. During the treatment a hand-carved wooden TriTouch drained lymphatic fluid from my lymph nodes, while the pure goodness of organic coconut oil literally melts antioxidants and vitamin E into my skin, leaving it velvety soft for the rest of the day. Pure heaven! Stimulation was applied to pressure points along my body’s meridians, activating the body’s natural curative

My body was left deeply relaxed and balanced and I was tempted to linger for hours but had a lunch appointment at the hotel’s five-star View for the business 4-in-1 express lunch menu so had to change out of my comfy robe and make my way up to the terrace. The four-course meal came charmingly presented on one main dish and was accompanied by a glass of Steenberg MCC.
The bread basket containing sundried tomato, olive and seeded breads was too tempting to resist but I saved space for my cold starter of salmon rillettes, melon soup, a sumptuous duck breast with rosti and an almond blanc manger. The Four Seasons will be celebrating the festive season in style with special events at both main restaurants, View and Flame and the offer of a third night’s free stay (from Dec 24-March 31) if revellers want to book in for a three-night stay.
