ITS ALL IN AN ERA The birmingham fashion scene is as diverse as its people, vintage however is the the biggest key, non high street trend with 40’s glamour, 60’s cool and 90’s grunge all being key looks. Each style is very individual but makes up birminghams alternative outlook on fashion. 1940’s hit a big revival when burlescque came back into fashion. This look is all about punchy colours contrasting with black soft fabrics against strong tailoring. PAGE ONE

The softest of all the looks around, 60’s is understated cool. It’s really more about the styling; back combed, but messy hair, smokey eyes and pale lips. It’s not psychedelia it’s just plain sexy. The look takes a nod and a bow to the coolest icons of the era like Bridget Bardot, Raquel Welsch and Anita Pallenburg. Modern stars stealing their looks, include Lana Del Ray and Lykke Li.

1990’s 1990’s 1990’s 1990’s
There is a big Indie music scene in Birmingham and most the Indie kids are taking inspiration from the 90’s grunge, with a kick back to 80’s punk. It’s a harder less effeminate look, so accessories and hair styles are key to not looking too punk. Think Vivienne Westwood, tie dying, fake furs and fun. So where do you shop to find these looks? Digbeth: Mr Birds Emporium, Cow Vintage, Urban Village Kings Heath: Top Banana Town: Forgotten Vintage, Urban Village and of course Oasis Market, a must for any vintage shopper. And then don’t forget the charity shops.

The underground clubbing scene in Birmingham is second to none, often appearing in Mixmag as their number 1 parties. Although weekly nights like Face, at the Rainbow Warehouse, or TRMNL, at Lab 11 and the new parties at Gibb St Warehouse are easy enough to get into and a must, there is a big

upcoming secret party scene. The after parties and daytime parties are springing up everywhere, most of which are invite only. C/N/D (Cloak and Dagger) is a monthly daytime party run by James Swinburne and Matt Timms and is held a a secret location each time, with invites going out
via Facebook on the day. The most recent party was held in the lobby for the Q Club, with dj’s coming from Berlin’s Panorama bar. You then have Below Daytime, run by Adam Shelton of One Records and Lee McDonald of Rainbow Warehouse, this party has even been run in a disused swimming pool
before, but is now commonly run at the Rainbow, due to the size of crowds. And if you want something to do after clubbing at night and whilst waiting for your daytime party, there are now after parties popping up, including Anonymous, at a secret location near you!
