Cathedral hosts healing service for families who have lost a baby
By CLARE BROOME, Communications & Services Manager, Chelmsford Cathedral CHELMSFORD Cathedral is hosting a healing service for families affected by the loss of a child through miscarriage as babies or infants. Taking place in the Cathedral on Sunday, November 5 at 6pm, the service will be led by the Mariposa Trust, an organisation that supports and cares for families who are suffering bereavement in this way. "It is an opportunity for people to come together, to share experiences and support one
another and in the past, families have found the service to be helpful and encouraging as well as an opportunity to acknowledge the life of their child," said Revd Canon Ivor Moody. This service is a time for anyone of any faith or none who has lost a baby, be it recently or many years ago to acknowledge and remember their baby in the beauty of the Cathedral whilst collectively saying goodbye. Everyone from across the diocese is warmly invited to attend and is urged to extend the invitation to anyone who they feel would benefit from the service.
Cathedral recruits meeters, greeters and carers
by David Frampton, Manager of Volunteer Weekday Welcome Stewards CHELMSFORD Cathedral is recruiting more volunteer welcome stewards. It’s an important and varied opportunity to serve God and the community in this beautiful place. Our stewards’ rota operates in two hour slots and most sign on once a fortnight. There is a need and an opportunity for ‘retired’ ministers to continue to pursue their calling alongside the stewarding team if
a ‘priest on call’ is not around. If you would like to discuss the possibility of helping, I should love to meet you or hear from you on 01245 441976 or at davidrframpton@me.com. Stewards are volunteer ’front of house’ contact for visitors between 10am and 4pm every day. They come from the Cathedral congregation and other churches, and welcome people and make sure they can find their way around. Stewards also function as bookshop assistants.

Yes, we are to gather for worship, but then we are sent out to serve. It’s lovely if the Steward feels comfortable to pray with visitors too if that is what they would like. More and more visitors are coming to enjoy and explore our lovely building. Some come to light a candle in memory of a loved one or to sit quietly in St Cedd’s Chapel or in the Cathedral for quiet and prayer. Other visitors come in not knowing quite what they want. They are distressed and want to talk to someone or just need somewhere quiet to sit and recover their emotional balance.

Medieval churches on study tour
THE Friends of Essex Churches Trust will be visiting three interesting medieval churches, each one in an attractive rural setting, on their Autumn Study Day. Led by Dr Christopher Starr, the study day will be held on Saturday, October 7 and will visit Fobbing, Corringham and Horndon-on-theHill. Keene lecturers will focus on Reformation THE Keene Lectures 2017 are entitled Luther’s Heritage with a film night and three lectures marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 1517 and interpreting its significance for today. The four events take place in Chelmsford Cathedral on October 31, November 8, 15 and 22 — all starting at 8pm. Edward Carter, the Canon Theologian at Chelmsford Cathedral, says: “Significant 500th anniversaries don’t come round very often, and the moment when Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door on
31st October 1517 has affected the church in the west ever since. “So I’m delighted that our three Keene Lecturers this year will be reflecting on that moment and helping us think about what it might mean for us today. "Duncan Morrow, Judith Champ and Sarah Perry all bring tremendous expertise in their different fields, as well as having excellent reputations as engaging speakers. “This year the series starts with a film night on the anniversary day, to whet our appetites.
“I look forward very much to welcoming you to Chelmsford Cathedral, starting with a film featuring Luther (2003) with Joseph Fiennes as Martin Luther. “The evening, on the exact 500th anniversary of the public proclamation of Luther’s 95 theses, will start with a short introduction discussing a variety of films that have been made over the past century about Martin Luther and the start of the Reformation. “The 2003 film, with Fiennes in the title role, received many plaudits.
